He got his coffee But they stated they don't sell bottled water, so I asked for a glass of water, which they stated they don't have??...what do they make their coffee with...piss??? Like there's anything to say about, yet another coffee house in Bellingham (or for that matter, the Northwest)... But, there is: First of all, this is just a very cool, historic building. Secondly, these are the nicest, friendliest people (employers and customers alike) in Bellingham, and that's really don't something because Bellingham is a pretty friendly place! And the coffee ain't bad, either! Lettered Streets is intimate, yet the high ceilings and large windows make it feel very open and comfortable. Good Coffee in a comfy, friendly, well-lit, kids and family-friendly space... What more could anyone ask for? The only downside is that Lettered Streets (like the neighborhood) closes pretty early, so there's not much time to linger at the end of the day. read more

I wanted to like this place so badly. I had read it was a great place to study and sit with your coffee, and had a great atmosphere,but I got there and was disappointed. There were no tables, chairs, power outlets, and the counter to sit at was too narrow to balance my laptop. I felt bad walking in, staring around, and then walking out, so I did purchase a small regular coffee. It was $2, which seemed a bit high for 6oz. There was also no place for me to add sugar and/or cream, and they didn't ask. The only saving grace was that the service was very friendly. read more

I rarely do reviews but thought this was worth putting out there. Had never been to this place but had a morning and thought given the reviews would try. Decent scone. Pleasant barista. Old school so I usually start the day with drip coffee. Coffee fine. Nothing special served in a small cup. Went for a refill. No refills. The option is pay another $3.00 for a blah nearly warm cup. Sorry folks. I get that there are those who will refill all day, but have also been in shops that limit to one refill to manage. Not well-done. Would not recommend nor probably be back. read more

Seriously, I welcome challengers to what we've, five days into our stay, have awarded "A Demitasse of Bliss." Subjectively, that the chalkboard of offerings has an offering I'm used to ordering "off the menu", the decor (1979 reprint of a 1934 wall calendar), the cinnamon of the Choko-latte (no, you won't choke, unless you have a fierce milk allergy), self-serve water, excellent baristas contributed to my five-star rating. Psychologically it would've been 5.5 stars but for the 0.30 cents surcharge (ever pay in decimal cents?) for credit card purchases and the ten-minute parking spot limitations even on weekends, but those are owner rules, not barista rules, unless it's a co-operative, which would bounce my rating back up to 5.5). The Good: Coffee... no complaints from my dark roast loving self. Good hot chocolate. Didn't have the opportunity to try much else. Service. The coffee gurus answered all my questions, which roast was what, types of milk, etc. in a very friendly and welcoming manner, even though I was THAT person holding up a busy line. The Bad: Seating is also limited and fills up quickly. Seating is hard wood and uncomfortable for my poor little un-cushioned posterior. Bathrooms are outside, in an interesting grandma's laundry room type situation. The Ugly: The space... is awkward... you enter into a largish open area with the bar/register at the back. There are a few counter seats on each side and if the line gets too long, which it does, navigating the counter seats and the bussing area and the entrance to the other seating is uncomfortable. Some people may enjoy this as cute/quaint 200 year old building charm... but not my cup of tea. Good crowd management always scores high points with me. read more

As my Local Coffee Shop Quest continues I find the list narrowing (hey, even Bellingham has to run out of java joints eventually), and yesterday realized I hadn't hit Lettered Streets yet. So I loaded up the laptop and headed on down. This is a cute little place in a super-historic old building. I ordered my usual...a regular coffee in a "here" mug. They have a few choices on size, which is a nice option. You can also choose from their regular or dark roasts. I chose regular, added the requisite cream and sugar, and grabbed a toasted sesame bagel which they delivered to me a few minutes later after I'd parked myself next to the last remaining seat in the Laptop Room. Well, I don't think it's really called that, but it should be! You see, Lettered Streets is split into two spaces - the main entry where you order up your coffee, and a side room which is full (like literally FULL) of folks hunkered over their laptops like something out of my old Suzzallo Library days! It was like I'd wandered into a well-kept secret society of Other People Who Can't Get Work Done At Home. I worried the wi-fi would be slow due to the secret society sucking it dry, but it worked fast and flawlessly during my entire stay. The coffee was delish and they also had some yummy lunch options up on the board. Would have loved a breakfast sandwich but the bagel held me over until my work was done. Upon entering LSC, my first thought was "Little Coffeehouse on the Prairie". I then thought it might be a little too cute and quaint for me to be comfortable here for long, but that wasn't the case at all. In fact, this ended up being my second favorite cafe in Bellingham, with the downtown location of Woods edging it out just slightly. What sold me on LSC were the coffee and the music. The espresso was the smoothest and cleanest (i.e. no aftertaste) I'd had in a long time, and the music had me reaching for Shazaam every 15 minutes to discover a new song. I only preferred Woods because it was more conducive to getting work done. Woods has more outlets, more students at work, and tables that are more distanced from one another. That said, if I lived in Bellingham I'd likely split my time between the two cafes equally. read more

I used to frequent this shop when I was going to school and living in Bellingham. Every time I am in town I visit, I am a sucker for their toddy in the summer and mocha variations in the winter. It is a small, quaint, and iconic place. I am most impressed with the knowledge of their staff on all things coffee and the pleasant conversation they always engage with me in. Certain times of day or days of the week are busier than others, something to be aware of with any coffee shop. It's a great place to relax, meet friends, and their food is quite good too! read more

My first ever non-franchise coffee joint, and homey, cozey, comffy indeed. Basically inside a heritage-like setting, I just yelped for best milkshakes and voila these guys showed up. While not the best chocolate milkshake, she assured it was real chocolate ice cream, and not pumped with chocolate sauce, yay. in fact, Maybe a tad too much milk, not malty enough, still had a bit of chopped ice bits (a good thing) just not sweet enough. Great service on a sleepy Saturday morning. Barista was friendly and made us a couple of delicious drinks - twice - as we had seconds before we left it was that tasty! The atmosphere in the old building is cozy and warm. I liked everything about this place and would recommend popping out of downtown to the Lettered Streets to give it a try. A lovely little house turned cafe in the lettered streets themselves, It doesn't get more Bellinghamster than this. The main room with bar-stools and baristas leads into a second room with wifi and a wonderful study space. It's bigger than you think upon first walking in, just look for the leeetle doorway on the right. The coffee is roasted to perfection.The drinks are oh so smooth and sexy! The skill level of coffee art that pops up in your beverage is a huge plus too! Just check out the pictures people have posted, the sweetheart service is amazing in and of itself, but a snowman in my latte? Yes please! They make a stiff soy foam too, which is hard to do. The baked goods are fresh and yummy, and they have a few GF options. This is a neighborhood locally owned cafe, so give em your business! **Parking can be a little hard as there is only a few spaces, but the neighborhood streets provide ample and free spots all around it. read more

We left without coffee after waiting forever for the batista to finish a protracted conversation with some regulars then she took some one else she new ahead of us, again, lost in their exclusive conversation. No notice when we looked at each other and left to continue our walk. I definitely recommend they require their staff to read "will I ever fit in : conquering adult dysemia" by nowicki and Duke, est their behavior catch up with them and cause yet another business failure in this location. I love older buildings. I also think a latte with artwork on it is one of the greatest human inventions. The barista was friendly, made a wonderful latte and even brought it out to me instead of calling me up. The atmosphere is a little quieter so its easier to get some work done or catch up with a friend than at noisier coffee shops. Also they have a pet fish with a name tag on its tank. The location is nice, but parking is a bit challenging if driving. I'm not clear why the prices are as high as they are. I typically never ask, but I did my last time there ($5 per small muffin and $6). Total of $17+ is steep for what I purchased. I was told the muffins are gluten free and mad onsite (still dosn't justify such pricing, in my opinion). The latte was also on the high end. May come by again, but can get 2x the items and just as good of coffee at Tony's in Fairhaven. I do like this place, I just think the prices need to be more competitive with locals (people nearby don't have many options). read more

There are many coffeeshops to choose from in Bellingham, so you may find another one that is more convenient. However, if you like excellent espresso drinks, Lettered Streets Coffeehouse is worth a visit. The baristas work hard to provide consistently good coffee drinks, and so far they are succeeding! If I'm in the neighborhood, I always make a stop at Lettered Streets because I know I can count on a high quality drink. They also have a nice assortment of baked goods - both sweet and savory - and some of them clearly marked with labels such as "Gluten free" or "Vegan" if that's what you want. (I always end up getting one of the berry scones, warmed for me!) They have free wireless and a lot of tables available if you want to bring some work and spread out. The drawback is lack of parking, but one block over on "G" street, parking is free and it's convenient (and worth your time) to walk over from there. read more

Lettered Streets coffee shop has a perfect environment. The coffee is excellent. The baristas are friendly but not cheesy. The scones they have here are the very best I've ever had. I don't like scones very much but these are awesome. The cafe has art on the walls which changes fairly frequently, and the baristas play chill music so its a perfect place to study or do computer work. The windows face the east, so all morning long there is beautiful sunlight inside. It is also in a very old building which adds to the charm. This and the Black Drop are my two favorite cafes in Bellingham. read more

I love the atmosphere and the coffee. My only grumble with this place is that they haven't had cold brew the last three times I've been in there. Owners and managers should understand that to stay on trend as a modern day coffee house they need to offer both hot drip coffee and cold brew (steamed or on ice), especially for those of us with weaker stomachs. If you know Bellingham, then you know that there are a lot of fantastic coffee shops in the old town. The Lettered Streets Coffeehouse is as good as it gets in Bellingham based on the quality of the service, the espresso and the hospitality. Here are some positives: Service - Kjersten (sp?) and Anna (Owners) have hired and trained some great Barista's that know how to properly prepare and pull a shot to be paired with your perfectly stretched milk and favorite flavor. The Espresso - I have yet to see or taste a bad shot from any Barista at any time. Do you know the Barista that will make you turn around and go to another place because they just don't make a good cup of coffee or latte? That person doesn't exist at the Lettered Streets. Hospitality - this is a lost art as far as I am concerned. With the staff at the Lettered Streets you get great conversation with table side service with just the right amount of personal interest without invading your privacy. Negatives ~ the parking. Its not an easy place to park, so walk, ride, or park on G street, its worth it. Revised Review ~ I decided, after visiting Bellevue, that I would rather walk two blocks for great coffee rather than park close for bad coffee. 5 Stars. read more

While visiting Bellingham for a few days, I frequented Lettered Streets Coffeehouse a number of times. First off, the espresso is great...I highly recommend it. Second, the atmosphere is really cool! It seems that it was an old house that was converted into a coffeehouse, but they kept all of the charm of the old house. I also liked that it is located on a fairly quiet street. I usually do not like working in coffee shops because most places have the appearance of being a business and they are somewhat hectic. However, because LSC has the feel of being in someone's house, I ended up staying for over an hour and got lots of work done using the free wifi. read more

This is not a coffee shop to go to if you are in a hurry, regardless of how convenient its location might be, and it feels very unwelcoming to me every time I have been here. This last visit, I ordered drip and an Italian soda for my son. We had about 15 minutes before we needed to head to his school, and it took 10 minutes to get the Italian soda. When we came in, I could see one person ahead of us (after I posted the first version of this review the owner, a lovely person, contacted me to tell me there were four orders ahead of us) , and we were careful to order things I think of as quick. I did get the drip right away, but only got the Italian soda after asking for it to go (we were on bikes, and had hoped to have our drinks there). Given the unusual configuration of space which allows folks to be waiting for an order while physically being in another room, perhaps a sign at rush times could indicate that you will have a 10 minute wait for your drink? Or maybe 15? I am pretty sure I "cut" in line to get my son his drink before we headed for his school, so I don't know how long I would have waited if I had not been impatient. I get that this is a kitchy space not designed for speed. It has an ambience in which I am sure a lot of folks are comfortable, and it seems to have a loyal clientele. And I am always a fan of local independent businesses. I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is that makes me feel so unwelcome there. My husband, and some friends, also always feel uncomfortable there, while other folks I know love this shop. But if you are comfortable there, and are interested in a nice, slow paced, relaxing experience, this is certainly a place to try out. read more

How I heard of this place: Mojgan and I drove past it yesterday as we were in the midst of running errands. Today, when the call for coffee and a quaint cafe from which to work came, I suggested checking out the new spot. We both agree it was worth the experiment in search of cute, new coffee shops in Bellingham to check out! Type of cuisine: Cafe with hot, iced and blended coffee beverages, teas, hot cocoa, Italian sodas and sweet pastries including scones, muffins, raw & gluten free desserts. Ambiance: Set in what looks to be an old home, the bright yellow and rust-colored walls, tall ceilings and wooden furniture make you feel at home in the space! One entrance opens to bar stool seating at high tables and the barista counter where orders may be placed and delivered to your table. The adjacent room, which has its own entrance from the outside, or through the doorway at the end of the barista counter, is full of seating, books for adults and children, local artwork and bright day light streaming forth from the near floor to ceiling windows! French music plays in the background, gaily and joyfully without overtaking conversation, but enough to feel like you have your own cozy work space. Traffic noises from outside can be hears as people stop at the light to cross Dupont and F Streets with their cars, trucks and motorcycles. But it's more the noise of life and things continuing to go on outside as you sit in your cafe haven enjoying the creamy java at the tip of your fingers! What I ordered: I ordered an 8-ounce non-fat single ristretto vanilla latte, on the sweet side ($2.35). My sister ordered the 20-ounce mug of non-fat latte ($4.05) that was delivered to our table with a rosetta atop the glossy foam. What I loved: The creamy, smooth flavor of the coffee, layered with the sweet taste of vanilla made me love this cafe as a place to which I must return on future trips to Bellingham! Why I loved it: The ambiance presents itself to one of casual ease where I can study, read a magazine, work or bring a friend with whom I wish to catch up! Just recently starting going to this coffee shop because it is now less than a mile from my house. Pros: The atmosphere is very comfortable and warm, the baristas bring your coffee to you (amazing...), the music is never annoying, and most importantly, their coffee is incredible. If you are like me and constantly disappointed by Starbucks and their attempt to make a soy latte....you will be in heaven here! Cons: it is pretty small (but I've yet to have a problem getting a table) and if you are parking....it is kind of a pain. They do have a few spots for 10 minute parking though. Also the bathroom is outside, so you have to ask for a key, but if you are used to Woods Coffe in Boulevard Park...it's no different. P.S. It is better than Woods...hands down. read more

I have been a Bellingham resident for five years. I am overjoyed to have finally found a wonderful, quiet and tasty coffee place! I have had the pleasure to drink their milkshakes and they are the BEST!! Which is funny coming from a coffee place! Who would have thought. The environment was awesome: Beautiful artwork and just enough seating to make it quiet and cozy. The coffee staff is also great!
