I was excited to go get some pastries a few weekends ago from Iron Rooster. I bought several things: fruit danish, focaccia, croissants, and a couple of drinks. Honestly, everything was fine but not spectacular. The danish had an egg wash on it, which is normal, but it was so thick the entire danish tasted of egg, which, for me, made it hard to eat. As with most things, opinion is personal, but I am honestly surprised by how many people love this place. Everything I had was mediocre, at best. I am glad I went and gave it a try, but I won't be back. I feel like it is overhyped based on their weekend only hours of operation. read more

If you're planning to order for more than five people consider pre ordering via the listed number/email, or arriving at opening. I happened to go on the bakeries birthday (Happy Birthday,) and most of the requested items were already sold out. The wonderful associate at the window took my list and found closely associated items that my customers absolutely loved (thank you!) Definitely some of the best pastries we have had in the state. Raspberry cheese/blueberry/nectarine danishes were all great. The blueberry was the star though. But the real gem is the peach bread pudding. It was the great amazing flavor of bread pudding but with fresh peaches that cuts some of the richness. If it had whipped cream it would be the only addition that could add to it but it does not need it at all. It is definitely desirable in this neighborhood so expect a line. How I heard of this place: We were walking by and noticed a line outside of the bakery. We made a mental note to try it another time, sans line. Our next visit with family from out of country, we decided we should give it a taste. Type of cuisine: Bakery with pastries including cakes, buns, muffins, cookies, danishes and more. Espresso and iced beverages also available. Ambiance: The inside seems cute, though we were hastily informed that it's off limits when we tried to enter the side doors (where other customers were streaming in and out, and we were eventually told we could sit to partake of our treats). Staff were less than friendly, but took our drink and pastry orders at a walk-up window, where the glare on the pastry case, as well as the number of things obstructing proximity to the window made it difficult to see and decide. The interior "cafe seating" is limited to three tables with only a couple of chairs at each, a staircase leading up to the offices/homes? above, and the "off limits" area directly to the opposite side. The small side table was covered in a layers of dust so thick, it was distracting and made us feel like shrinking into our seats without touching or skimming past anything. What I ordered: We selected a raspberry cheese danish, a blueberry cheese danish, a slice of carrot cake, a chocolate torte, and a lavender shortbread cookie. For our drinks, a mocha, two peppermint steamed milks, a watermelon Italian soda and a large brewed coffee. What I loved: The cheese danishes were the only items we would order again, based solely on flavor, though the croissant-like base left something to be desired (seemed stale and day-old). The chocolate torte was cake-y, not "fudgey" like we were told, and the shortbread hard rather than soft and buttery. The carrot cake left much to be desired in all respects. Great local bakery in Fairhaven, with a wide selection of freshly-baked pastries and top-flight espresso. The only challenge is their weird and inconvenient ordering system. Feels like it is straight out of COVID--a table and chair set in front of their front door with no "order here" sign. You finally figure out to order from the window in the front door, when someone appears to take your order, What looks like a main customer entrance has been changed to "employees only," while customers wait outside in the rain to order, wait for their pastries to come out in a bag, wait again for their coffee, etc . Owner was more interested in a smoke outside near his car than in helping chilly customers waiting in line. read more

And now that the weather is nicer, you can sit outside at one of the tables and nosh on some superb French-inspired pastries. When I went, there was a full tour bus' worth of tired, surly-looking high school kids behind me, so I felt a little rushed in choosing. Truly, these baked delights look like works of art. I panicked and chose very quickly without much thought. I got a scone, a chocolate snail, a vanilla eclair, and a ham and cheese croissant. I was getting breakfast for a few people, don't judge me! We got home and dug in. Needless to say, while I didn't put much thought into my purchase, everything was delectable. It was so good, we didn't even bother heating them up, and the worst part of it all was that I had to share. Super cute little bakery in Fairhaven that draws a decent line of weekend morning breakfast seekers. The pain au chocolat is so flaky and fresh, absolutely worth the wait! The bear claw is another perfect breakfast pastry with eggs and sun dried tomatoes inside a fluffy croissant. I recommend everything croissant / danish related, but the eclairs and cookies are overly sweet. I now live in Seattle, but when I lived in Bellingham I ordered pastries from here relatively frequently, at least once a month during the summer. The price definitely feels like a splurge, but the pastries are some of the best I've ever had so I still would consider it a good value for a special treat. The drinks I've had have been good, not as amazing as the pastries but definitely not bad either. If you have your heart set on a specific pastry, you should text ahead of time to reserve it, unless you want to show up right when they open. They sell out pretty fast! It's also convenient in general to order ahead- that way you don't have to wait for them to pack your order up. The staff have been nice, and although their indoor area isn't open, they do have some tables and benches outside for casual seating. read more

I am not normally a pastry or dessert person. I much prefer grease over sugar (fried pork chops rather than donuts). But it is impossible to ignore the the absolutely exquisite products that The Iron Rooster offer. Every month The Iron Rooster is by far the most common charge on my VISA card. They should just put me on a monthly payment plan. Thankfully they are only open three days a week. I have never had anything from there that wasn't in the, "Best I've ever had" category. O M G This place has been on my "must try" list for, like, evs. Well today was the day as I found myself in Fairhaven, hangry, and needing more caffeine. From the moment I got out of my car I could smell the amazing deliciousness emanating from this tiny little bakery. And from the line at the counter, I'm guessing I wasn't the only one! Iron Rooster describes itself as a French bakery, and I can't disagree. Their display case was FULL of pastry deliciousness. From croissants and cakes to quiche and other delights, there was something for pretty much anyone. Since I hadn't had breakfast yet, I opted for a bear claw - a gorgeously layered pastry stuffed with eggs, cheese, and sundried tomatoes. Warmed up perfectly, this little delight was absolutely delicious and satisfied my rumbling tummy. No sooner was I done biting into my bear claw when my vanilla oat milk latte arrived. Served in a 12-oz "here" cup and adorned with #latteart, it was a thing of beauty that I didn't really want to disturb. So I finished my bear claw and took a few lovely pics of my beverage before I dove in. I'll say it again: OMG. This is, I'm pretty sure, the best cup of coffee I've had in Bellingham. (And if you know me, you know I've had a LOT of coffee!) It was sweet, but not too sweet. Vanilla-y, but not too vanilla-y, creamy (like it was made with real milk, but it wasn't), and the coffee-to-other-stuff proportion was off the charts. I had trouble not drinking it too fast, and then more trouble not ordering a second one! I can hardly wait to go back and make sure this cup of java perfection was not an anomaly, but the real deal. My only regret about the Iron Rooster is that I didn't visit sooner. Someone please get a European croissant right, the real loud crisp and browned outside is LIFE. Swiss roll: delish if cake a bit overdone. Blueberries could've used a light shuzz, like an amaretto or honey soak. They seemed almost divorced from the rest, the cream. Big shards of lemon were bright but too largely grated. Plum hazelnut tart: the best! Great flavor, crisp puff pastry. Same as others, a grace note added would have helped. Maybe a frangipani or crème pat lean middle? Brûlée on the top? Catching up on Yelp reviews. This was from yet another spontaneous solo road trip, this time via Chuckanut Drive to Bellingham's Fairhaven District back on 8/25/18. I haven't visited Fairhaven in a long time, so when I took a random left turn and found Iron Rooster Bakery, definitely it was time to park the car. Glanced at a nearby crepe place, nixed my usual Colophon Café from the past, the bakery won hands down! I'm glad I stopped in and stayed awhile. The pastry case itself was a beautiful sight on this drizzly day. I enjoyed talking with the café/bakery owner. Evidently he and his wife opened this bakery a year ago, having relocated from New York to be near his sister in Vancouver, BC Canada. A New Yorker by birth and a fondness for VanBC - these were good signs indeed! The variety of baked goods was phenomenal. The pastry chef is his wife. As I was enjoying a pastry with my lovely crafted mocha, I was charging my phone and absorbing the ambiance of this indie bakery/café. Loved it so much started texting people about it and attaching the same photos I posted to Yelp. I can say that folks from Arlington stopped by later that day, another co-worker and her friend also visited the following weekend, as did another co-worker and her friends also that same weekend. Full disclosure: I did complete a pastry certification, studied in both Seattle and on a baking scholarship to Aurillac, France. Worked as an assistant pastry chef in a well known established restaurant in Seattle a lifetime ago. This place would be at least 15 Yelp stars, if this were only possible. I was offered a tour of the pastry kitchen which I politely declined. Last time I did that, was at the late Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia to which I still regret. I will return with an out of state Yelper next month on our way to Willows Inn up on Lummi Island. Hopefully that offer still stands. Outstanding technique, taste, execution, and presentation! Amazing! Like how I feel about Breadfarm in Edison, definitely Iron Rooster Bakery is a must stop in Fairhaven. Heading north? Leave home earlier and detour to this spectacular bakery. This place is GOOD! Visited on a whim, on a rainy day, just wanting to explore the town after making a trip to the book store and cafe across the street. My sister in law got an almond croissant, which was TO DIE FOR! All the pastries looked amaaaazing! My husband and brother in law got a coffee and a mocha, which they were very pleased with. I was too full from the cafe across the street to be able to get anything but had tastes of the families items. :P Best way to do it, right? The decor was so quaint and super cute! Christmas cookies were displayed hanging in the window: adorable! The dog bowl outside, next to iron rooster, was indication of the dog-friendly atmosphere that I can expect on a day when walking outside permits. On a stroll to Magdalena's Creperie I walked passed a window with BAKERY on it. Bakery? Here? Since when? Not to be disruptive, I peek through the window and am happy with what I see. But I came for savory crepes next door. Well, when I got next door I decided I didn't want to pay $16 for a crepe after all (even though they are delicious). As I turned around a lady who saw me peeping through the bakery window gushed, "they have the best baked goods in town." Far be it for me to not check out the reportedly best baked goods in town. That ain't happening. I bought the last two plated almond croissants and a slice of olive oil cake and an Americano to wash one of the croissants down with. Taking my largesse to an outdoors table, I very much enjoyed the moment. I liked that all the coffees were one price regardless of size and all the pastries were fairly priced. I felt appreciated as a customer and not gouged in the least. I felt like I wanted to try most of the offerings which is a bad thing because I'm also trying to reduce 9-14 pounds. Today, my son and I tried Iron Rooster Bakery for the second time. What I like about this place is their effort of trying to create more space for people to stay in and enjoy their food. The space is very limited, but there are two tables. Also, they have acquired the entrance area of the adjacent building, and they have placed three additional tables. I have to say this additional space is awkward (my photo), but they have decorated it rather tastefully. My son and I tried three items today (my photo): a macaron, a chocolate orange pillow, and a tart. We "unanimously" agreed the tart was a 5 out of 5. We didn't like the other two items. The macaron was my least favorite. It was relatively inexpensive ($2 as opposed to $3 or even more); so, I decided to try. It was too "heavy" both the flavor and the texture. There are two things I would like see changed. They use disposable plates and cups. No matter how great their baked goods look, it is sad to see them on a paper plate. The other change is probably very difficult if not impossible. They do not have a bathroom (in the building). You would have to cross the street and use the public bathrooms at Village Green. For one thing, it's inconvenient. For another, those public bathrooms are depressing with those stainless toilet bowls and the concrete floors. If you value ethical and polite business owners, go elsewhere. I've had three very unpleasant experiences with the owner of this bakery. First was 2 years ago. My elderly client and I waltzed in looking for a mid day treat. I was not aware the man berating the young cashier, was the owner. The young man cashiering was humiliated, I was humiliated FOR him. The owner went into the back, I asked the young man if this was normal, he stated it was. I asked the next obvious question, why work here then? He stated he was going back to school soon. While speaking to the young man, the owner returned from the back and stated we were not welcome to return. Clearly the owner overheard my inquiries into the young man's working conditions. Second experience, Myself and the rest of the public were engulfed by his cigarette smoke as we walked by. He stands on the grass, within feet of people pushing strollers and eating. Come on Bellingham, Why would we tolerate this? Third experience was yesterday, May 14. My daughter, grandsons, myself and the rest of the public were walking through his cigarette smoke. We make our way past to Edaleens ice cream a couple doors down. We get our ice cream, walk outside and see Edaleens tables are all in use. We look for any open tables - All in use except Iron Roosters Bakery which just closed its doors for the day. We walk down, warily looking to see if it was safe. The Bakeries gray blinds were completely closed, no one outside, all's quiet. So we sit down. Myself, my daughter and Grandsons. The owner walks out and asks us to leave. We asked why. He stated, and I quote - "You got ice cream from Edaleens, you eat it down there" We told him how rude he was, pointed out he was closed and there was NOWHERE else to sit. He stated and I quote - "Not my problem, move it down there" I value local businesses who value their reputations and customer base. I wouldn't, under any circumstances, recommend this bakery. There's a reason you'll see a line outside of Iron Rooster every morning: their pastries are incredible! From a perfectly flaky, buttery croissant, a savory egg bear claw, to a sweet raspberry danish - you really can't go wrong. The piece de resistance is the Mother Hen - a hollow croissant pastry filled with pastry cream and coated in sugar. The coffee selection is also excellent and the seating area's very cozy. They're doing a great job with Covid. They have a wonderful display of pastries and you order from the door which is protected with plexiglass. Customers wait in line, all masked and 6 ft apart. Efficient and safe. I saw a batch of freshly made almond croissants coming out as I was waiting in line so of course I ordered those, and some pecan shortbread. Everything was delicious. One of my favorite spots in Bellingham. I think we've just about tried almost everything, but some favorites are the hen's nest, rooster, brownie, bear claw, cookies, and cinnamon roll. They also make one of my favorite hot chocolates in BHam. Everytime we go, we can't just pick one thing and never regret it! While their pastries are very good, this is not my go to place mainly because the people who serve you are not friendly or welcoming. I have seen one of the owners there each time. He did not say hello or welcome, the server/cashier was not welcoming. Just not a friendly place at the times I was there. There are other places in Bellingham that serve bake goods just as good and maybe better that are happy to have your business. Visited Iron Rooster this morning and wow - SO CUTE! I'm not sure when it first opened, but I know it's very new. The physical space is definitely one of the cutest places in Bellingham and Fairhaven. The exposed brick walls, beautiful blue and marbled counters, and tile flooring look incredible together, especially with the large beautiful windows letting in natural light! I bought two croissants - the cinnamon walnut and oatmeal ones. They were good! The cakes looked so beautiful though, and they also offer coffee. I'm excited to try the croissants since I've heard good things about them. My group met the owner when we were there, which was pretty neat! He was really kind and told us a bit about where they got their name (the house he and his wife bought had a giant ~5 foot iron rooster in their backyard, which now resides in front of the bakery). They had a bunch of fresh flowers from their garden as well, which was a touch I loved! read more

Great little find here in fair haven. Nice staff, clean place and a olive oil cake I would crash my car into orphanage for. I decided to try a variety so I got the strawberry danish (amazing fresh cut strawberries) the molten chocolate cake, the olive oil cake and a croissant. They were all great and after I was done I only wound up shouting at my naked self in front of the mirror for 20 minutes. Win-win. read more
