We went here and it just so happened that they have happy hour which is $1 off pints, not bad. We got some blackberry cider (their featured beer of the month) which was $5.50 which is a pretty good price. The cider was a bit watered down even if they didn't actually add water to it, it just lacked a bit of flavor. However, we did get the chance to sample a few beers and the server was patient about it. Good pairing with the burgers from the food truck El Pollo Feo and it looks like some people bring food from the food trucks here to enjoy with the beer. In what might be considered a potentially controversial opinion, I believe that Kulshan is the brewery that set off the chain reaction that ultimately resulted in Bellingham becoming a PNW craft brewery destination. I had the pleasure of visiting Kulshan on their very first night of operation, which was a longggg time ago. At that time, the only other two major breweries in town had full kitchens and great menus, and Kulshan planned to only feature food trucks. I thought this was a horrible idea! Especially considering, at the time, there weren't all that many food trucks around. Well, I was wrong. Kulshan concentrated on making good beer, and serving it up with a friendly smile in their warm, inviting little space. Food trucks have come and gone over the years, but the beer has remained consistently amazing, the staff welcoming, and the space is almost exactly the same (with a couple of minor mods, including removing the dart board many moons ago). They've also since opened a second, larger location, adding "K2" and the Trackside Beer Garden to a list of what is now many, MANY breweries in the city. A great little brewery with a friendly staff, lots of outdoor seating (indoor too), and usually a food truck (recently that's been the Greektown food truck offering gyros, baklava, etc. The beers are good, and there are number of other offerings too, ranging from hard cider to root beer. But the thing I love about Kulshan is the dog friendly outdoor seating at picnic tables, with food from the food truck and beer from the brewery. Coming in early on a Tuesday the place was quiet with a few people getting work done. Our beer tender was really nice and curious about our trip which made for nice conversation. The taproom was very spacious and clean and I loved the diner type vibe I got from the seating and tables. Overall thoroughly enjoyed myself. Driving through Bellingham on the way to Vancouver and another brewery recommended we stop into Kulshan. We decided to order a flight and the beertender was happy to recommend a few of their most popular and his faves. Also super friendly and happy to recommend other breweries in the area to try out. The area inside is fairly large with plenty of seating and very clean. If it wasn't sprinkling I would have loved to have sat outside. It's street parking but we didn't have much of an issue. I could see that being harder on a weekend though. There is a great variety so something for everyone. I thought the Mexican lager, sunnyland IPA and Baby Yoda juicy IPAs were my favorite. The Transporter Porter was okay. Pretty standard. Overall I would say it's worth a stop if you want to try a variety. read more

Look. I've been going to Kulshan Brewing since I turned 21--FOURTEEN YEARS ago. I've been there through all stages of life: newly 21, figuring out if I even liked beer; trivia night with my college friends, home for the holidays; post-college life, going to get beers with my dad and realizing he was actually my best friend; living two blocks away and walking to the brewery multiple nights a week after work; moving away from Bellingham and making Kulshan a must-do stop anytime I came for a visit. I buy Kulshan beer whenever I see it in stores in my new city. I own pins and mugs and tee shirts. I've been drinking Kulshan beer since the time when there was just one location. I have been a loyal, enthusiastic Kulshan fan for a DECADE AND A HALF. But now, I'm in yet another phase of life: parenthood. What a gift it is to have breweries in this world. To have a place where adults can continue to gather in community after having children. Where families can exist in the world together. Or at least, that's how it should be, right? Especially in a place that advertises itself as family-friendly and positions itself as a pillar in the community. Today, I went to the original Kulshan location in Sunnyland, with my two year-old. It's my birthday weekend and I had just over 24 hours to spend in Bellingham. In those limited hours, Kulshan was once again on the must-do list. So I brought my son there, eager to feel that sense of community and home that I have loved for so many years. Unfortunately, that was not to be. I had one beer while my son ran around and let other patrons' dogs lick his face, and then was asked to leave by the bartender. I was not given a reason except that, "Other customers were complaining." I'm unsure what they were complaining about, since the only customers I talked to: a) complimented my son's tomato outfit, b) talked about how parenting is the best thing they've ever done, and c) brought their dogs up to my son because their dogs "love kids". Not a single person expressed discomfort or upset. My child didn't disturb anyone or break/damage any property. He exclaimed loudly, once, but the only comments afterwards from other patrons were jokes about how he should be cut off from drinks. Anyone who has had a toddler understands that it is a very busy and chaotic time of life. Wouldn't it be nice if people offered some grace and humor and support and understanding, instead of behaving in such a way that further isolates people who have taken on the already-impossibly-difficult task of growing the next generation of decent human beings? Instead of experiencing that support today--after YEARS of supporting Kulshan as a business, from both near and far away--my family was rejected. Needless to say, I am angry. I am so disappointed in my experience today and I wish that weren't the case. I have loved Kulshan for many years. But not today. read more

This was on the top three breweries for my husband and I to visit during our stay in the Bellingham area, and we were instantly welcomed and impressed with the hospitality from the Kulshan Brewing staff! Nice craft brewery in the middle of Bellingham. Parking is available on the side streets. The venue has a nice large patio in front, which is really nice for those sunny days. The inside is split into a bar area with some small tables, and a secondary seating area that is basically a large picnic table. Staff were friendly. Flights here consist of 6 4oz brews, which is quite nice for trying more of their product. The holder is shaped like the state of Washington. They have a reasonably large seasonal menu (about 1/3 of their total selection), so it looks like this place requires a few visits spread throughout the year before one can sample everything. It's a very cool taproom and gift shop with plenty of seating indoors and out. They have the hustle and bustle on probably damn near any day of the year, and frequently have food trucks in residence. There are multiple spaces on the patio with tons of tables, and plenty more tables in several room inside. It's all clean and welcoming, and you can situate your group in its own spot or maybe mingle with the flow of the rest of the crowd as you like. The beers here are really good--lots of different IPAs and session beers and some interesting stuff you don't always see everywhere, too. Staff are super outgoing and funny. It's easy to enjoy a round or five here, and I'd be a regular if I lived nearby. read more

Kulshan Brewery is a local favorite. The patio is packed on sunny days and the inside is always bustling. Their flight of beer includes 6 mini mason jars snuggly tucked into a wooden frame in the shape of Washington state. You are given a dry erase marker and a map where you can write your 6 beer choices. Their menu offers a wide selection of locally produced brews, including several seasonal ones that keep you coming back. Parked in front you can always find a local food truck. The truck schedule is available on Kulshan's website. You have to line up for your food, and wait for it to be prepared, but Kulshan allows you to bring the food truck grub into their establishment as long as you clean up after yourself. Many trucks will take credit cards, but bring cash just in case. Also, Kulshan does not accept American Express. Any brewery that offers darts hits the bullseye for me. Leave your license at the bar to check out darts. The wine cork, back board catches your drunken, stray throws. A score board for Cricket and chalk are provided. The dart board is located in an isolated nook that prevents cross traffic and keeps patrons from getting jabbed. Street parking is free, but hard to find. Bike racks are built into some of the outside seating areas, so you can keep a close eye on your ride without even having to lock it up. Trader Joes and Avenue Bread have private parking lots nearby that might offer space or you can park in the surrounding Sunnyland neighborhood. The craft beers here are worthy of a return visit. read more

Kulshan was the second stop on the local craft brewery tour (the evening before I visited Chuckanut). I was hoping for even better beers based on the Yelp reviews and the selection of beers listed on their web site. It was a Tuesday evening - and it was damn hard to find a place to park. Several adjacent businesses had signs posted - reminding Kulshun customers to not park in their spots. I finally found a spot to park on James street several businesses down from the brewery. They don't serve food here, so I made sure I ate before I arrived. They did have a food truck parked out front serving their wares to hungry customers. I managed to secure a spot at the bar - and inquired about a beer/ale tasting. I opted to build my own tasting flight as I wanted to try all of their IPAs (three total). So I ended up with: Good Ole Boy Pale Ale, Bastard Kat IPA, Double Brother Double IPA, Smoked Stout, Midnight KDA, and Last Resort IPA (the Smoked Stout and Last Resort IPA were limited time specials and not listed on the Kulshan Brewery web site). I started with the Good Ole Boy Pale Ale, then worked my way through the IPAs plus the Midnight KDA - which is essentially a Black IPA. All of the IPAs were tasty, and a nice bitter, hoppy aspect to all of them. None were overwhelmingly hoppy IMHO. I finished things off with the Smoked Stout, which was very bold. I'd much rather drink Stouts like this as opposed to Guinness! Overall, all six Ales/beers were very good - although I would probably not order the Midnight KDA - just was not my thing. I'd happily order a pint of any of the other five! I struck up conversations with several other folks who came in and sat next to me at the bar. All were locals and regulars and fans of the place. One elderly lady pulled up a barstool next to me and had a pint of their Trans-Porter in hand - she made me try it. It was my least favorite of the beers I tasted but I appreciated her offering a taste to me and enjoyed chatting with her. Turns out she makes her own beers at home as well. The place was absolutely packed on a Tuesday night! And it was pretty loud in there! The place is very popular and I can see why! Service was friendly and very good! My wife and I stopped here real quick after after hiking for a quick swiggle. Free street parking can be found. Discover is an accepted form of payment. This brewery is family friendly, but also has a 21+ area. Quite a large outside seating area is offered as well. Food is not served here but there was a strEAT truck outside where food could be ordered and enjoyed on site along with some tasty brews. We did not eat here. I liked that there were four different glass sizes to choose from when ordering beer. Since my wife and I were in a rush, we opted for the 10oz pours. My wife ordered a 10oz Red Cap Ale for $3 and I ordered a 10oz Good Ol' Boy for $3. We both enjoyed our choices and look forward to returning when we have more time to sample brews. read more

Of all the breweries in Bellingham, this one felt like the most friendly in a small town way. We went to the bar and started up a conversation about home skillet and soon enough, most of the bar and bartender were talking about it with us. I use to go here a lot when I worked near by and the bbq food cart is great as well. After I told him I was vegetarian, he made something just for me set to the side. I like the beer a bit more at places like boundary bay and the atmosphere a bit more at places like Aslan and their other location, but you can't go wrong going here either. read more

I love Kulshan. We come here at least once or twice a month. They have great beer and cider, friendly staff, merchandise, are kid and dog friendly, and even heaters in the winter so you can still sit outside and stay warm. At one point, they even had soft pretzel bites with honey mustard, which was some of the best I've had and if you are not a fan of that, they almost always have a delicious food truck for a good price. This is a very cool spot. We were fortunate to find time on an afternoon with a little sun but it would have been great either way. I really wanted to like Kulshan but I just didn't like it as much as I thought. I got the Wheat Ale, one of the regular beers they had on tap. The beer was ok I suppose but it did not have the breadiness that I was hoping to get with this beer. I do not exactly recall what Steve got be he too agreed that his beer was so so as well. The atmosphere is very nice. The night we went here it was pretty crowded and finding seats were a little hard. After we sat down we people watched, analyzing how Bellingham people seemed to be different than Seattle people. We even got a free "peep" show when a lady pulled down her blouse and let her infant have some one on one time with the "front" of her. Gotta love public places. This review is a couple months late. We came in August. Great beer (so said my boyfriend at that time)! We were on a road trip up and down the coast and stumbled upon Kulshan Brewing because we saw a sign on the side of the freeway. We stopped by and sat outside with our dogs and enjoyed some samplers. We ended up with a growler to take home as a souvenir. This place is very low key and super casual. If you're in the area, stop by and try a sampler! They're great! read more

Great brewery in Bellingham. The space is huge with a ton of inside space as well as a large outdoor area. The beers here were good. I had a Belgian wit and I sampled the raspberry lager. Both were solid beers. I like that the beers here weren't too high on the alcohol content, the max was around 6%. There was also a food truck when I was there.
