My wife and I were passing through Paso Robles and were exploring the town when it was time for lunch. Looking through Yelp we saw several possible places, but The Backyard tickled our fancy, so we decided to give it a try. At first it looked closed, as when we approached from the street, there was a small stand-like structure with a serving window, but it was closed. Fortunately, we explored a bit and behind this structure was a large outdoor seating area consisting of picnic tables (many of them in shade), and another small structure where one places their order. There was also a covered outdoor seating area with outdoor couches and chairs. I had the "Backyard Burger" ($16) which was very good. My wife had the "Philly Cease Steak" ($16) which as better; very yummy! (she got the better item!). You place your order and pay at the counter window. I loved this place! Went for the first time tonight and will be going back! I'm a pretzel lover and the pretzel did not disappoint. The beer cheese was amazing too. Got a grilled chicken sandwich as my main meal. The sandwich was delicious and came with a great portion of kettle chips. This spot is dog-friendly and they gave my dog a milk bone as we got done ordering. They also have puppy patties on the menu. My boyfriend got a beer and cider and was pleased with both choices. We booked the Backyard (Garage + Porches + Fire pits) for our wedding welcome dinner with family and friends. We were so impressed with the event space being fully equipped with heaters and enough seating for around 60 guests. We were initially concerned with the weather being too cold for an outdoor event space but the heaters and fire pits kept everyone warm. The owners were very accommodating and generous as they offered to cover a bartender for our space for a couple hours due to a private event they were holding in the front of the venue. All of my guests were able to order their own food & drinks from our Bartender which made it easy to accommodate the party size. I highly recommend The Backyard as a perfect spot in Paso Robles to host a large private party. We were incredibly impressed and grateful for their generous hospitality. Get the pretzels! My advice is don't think about it, just order them. They are soooo delicious and your dipping options are amazing: beer cheese, mustard, other types of cheese lol. This is a great spot to visit in Paso Robles. There is a lot of outdoor seating and they allow dogs here. For drinks, they have a wide variety of beers to choose from that are mostly from local breweries. For food, they are have a good amount of options to choose from. I ordered their smash burger with fries and it tasted really good. My husband also ordered their pretzel sticks, which were just okay. They were oily from butter and soggy. The cheese sauce and mustard that came with the pretzel sticks tasted good. Overall, I enjoyed this place and would probably come back when visiting Paso. read more

Party of six? No problem here with plenty of various seating options. Hot? They got misters? Sports on big screen you can see form several picnic bench tables. Food options-not too many but some good tasting offering- I like the burger, nachos or pulled pork. Last but not least they have a good selection of beer, cider, seltzer and wine! They have mead too if that's your thing! It's popular and can be crowded but there is usually a spot. If they a few more food options would a perfect place to hang. We celebrated my husband's birthday here recently. We reserved the lawn and it was perfect! There were misters that kept us cool since it was about 95 degrees. The lawn was nice for the kids since it was gated and had some fun toys for them to play with. We all ordered food and drinks and everything was delicious. The 805 fries were tasty. There were lots of beers on tap and others in the fridge at the bar. My friend that came was impressed with their non-alcoholic options, as well! It was convenient because we could all get whatever drinks we wanted, food we wanted, and set up our own tabs (or not). Everyone was very nice and helpful. The "beer/wine garden" has a seperate building for ordering your beverages from the food. If you just want to order your beverages and sit down, you can scan the barcode from the food item binder that sits on all the tables. Just order and they will bring it to your table! We had a great experience at The Backyard. Delicious food, yummy beer and a welcoming and cozy vibe. The service was excellent. We took our kids and our giant dog. Dog devoured his burger patty. They had water bowls available for him as well. We went at night and naturally there was a large party of people partying. The main retro looking building houses the restaurant Roots on Railroad, and at the rear of the property is The Backyard, an outdoor beer garden which offers 24 rotating craft beers and ciders on tap, 4 wines on tap, as well as a large selection of other adult & non-alcoholic libations. The Backyard and Roots on Railroad share the same outdoor complex for the enjoyment of their mutual patrons. Their "Come Relax and Unwind" atmosphere is quite inviting with large pit group sectional sofas, firepit, and many table seating clusters throughout the complex. And they have a great food truck associated with the taproom. I got a Poké bowl and , he got a smash burger. Friendly service, and a great beer selection. Should have something for everyone from sours to IPAs. We didn't sit at them, but they have couches with fire rings in the middle. And it looks as if you can reserve them in advance for a party. It did have the crust and was seasoned well. The pretzel I would not say we liked. A bit to salty. The sausage and kraut well the sauerkraut stole the show! Not to tangy and vinegary. Pieces of bacon. It was superb. All good is separate business but sold in a shared location set up like Biergarten. The brew in taps were fabulous. I love these open spaces! From the road this place does not look too big, but it's huge! I wont go into detail about their taps cause they have a great variety and frankly I dont have the time to type that much, but rest assured there is something for each and every tastebud. First experience, great. Food was delicious, kids space was amazing for them to safely run around in a gated area. Second time, we went and they had roped off three large areas for big parties, including the kid area. We spent the whole time jumping up to make sure they didn't go past the entrance (Kids were 1 and 3.) and our food came out cold. Not a big fan of the experience. It's all outside, and Paso is hot in Summer. Maybe call ahead to make sure the majority of the place isn't reserved for parties, and never go when the weather is above 70. Me and my boyfriend stopped by here for a late lunch today and we had an amazing experience overall! I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant and how it is all outside. Since it was a hot day, they had mist machines on which was very much appreciated. They have a simple food menu and a very big beer menu. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, Mac and cheese and a hummus plate. The total came out to $40 with tip. Everything was delicious! The Mac and cheese had so much flavor and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The pulled pork sandwich had great seasonings on it and the coleslaw was delicious. The hummus plate was fresh and the house made hummus was very yummy. Although it was on the pricer side for food, it tasted delicious and was definitely worth it. The service was also very good and our food came out quickly. Overall, this is a great restaurant to stop at if you want great food and drinks with a chill, outdoor atmosphere. read more

Nice setup for a nice night in Paso! Came to the "BackYard" to get food at Roots on the Railroad during a warm summer trip up to Paso. The beer washed down the lobster roll really well. Only compliant is that the beer line was a bit longer than ideal. I don't know why it didn't move very fast when we were there. Beers were all tasty and they had some good variety for everybody. Definitely an enjoyable place to hang out outside in those great Paso nights. I love Paso Robles. I love the downtown there. I love the wine and restaurant scene.
