Super fun and cozy atmosphere, welcoming staff, and unique menu. The outdoor/indoor seating is really nice. The portion sizes were great and had a good variety of food!

Shepherds pie.

Fantastic meal for four on an early summer Friday night. We ordered a number of things off the specials menu ... pot roast, beef burrito, shepherds pie. Portions were huge. Plenty to take home. Flavorful, well cooked with some extras ... fried green beans instead of potato fries were excellent (crispy, light, not greasy) and the pot roast wasn't drowning in gravy with plenty of carrots and mashed potato. We enjoyed specialty cocktails and local, craft drafts. Our server was excellent, freindly, humorous and on the spot. Never more than a minute between needing another drink and her arriving table side. And the food runners (high school kids) in their uniform shirts were very disciplined and well managed. Good crowd, a few open tables including ours looking out over the brook. Finally, price point is perfect. Dinner for two off the specials menu with craft beers and tip was about $75.

Roasted Garlic Asiago Fries with hot sauce

Fried chicken. Spicy hot honey. Vanilla bean ice cream. The Hot Honey Crispy Chicken Ice Cream Sandwich is an intriguing combination. The Babbling Brook is about a 40mn drive southwest of Albany and if the name wasn't any indication, it's located right next to a brook. Their location is great for a spring, summer or warm fall day. There is available seating outdoors and also a large grassy area near the brook where you can just relax and enjoy nature. We ordered bacon-wrapped pierogies, boneless wings tossed in PB&J sauce (not pictured), garlic asiago fries, 2 chicken sandwiches, and a Philly cheesesteak wrap (also not pictured, sorry). The boneless wings were delicious. Deep-fried so they were crispy. And the meat wasn't dried out. The PB&J sauce was awesome too. The bacon-wrapped pierogies were great. The bacon wasn't burnt to a crisp and paired well with the pierogies. The roasted garlic asiago fries were bomb.com! I opted for hot sauce drizzled on mine and I thought they were awesome. The melted cheese tasted great and my own improvement would've been adding more of it. Let's talk about that chicken sandwich though. It's a novelty sandwich. I haven't seen it done before and only recently learned about it through a local foodies group. The sandwich tasted okay and I will be trying it again. I just felt as if the ice cream was too much and spicy honey didn't bring the heat like I hoped it would. Next time I'll add bacon and request just 1 scoop of ice cream rather than the 3 it came with haha All in all, we will be returning. The service was quick and our food arrived to the table hot. Our meal didn't break the bank and the drive provided an opportunity to relax and enjoy the trip.

Molten chocolate chip cookie

This was a very busy place for seemingly being in the middle of nowhere. We sat outside which was very nice as inside did not have very much ambience. As other reviewers have stated, the staff is pretty young so you need to be patient . I though the food was mediocre, not bad but not great . I ordered the boneless chicken wings that were tossed in a very good "medium" buffalo sauce . Unfortunately because they were so thin, they were overcooked leaving them chewy and dry . I also ordered a side of ff and Cajun coleslaw . The coleslaw was the highlight of our meal . It was delicious . Hubby ordered the French dip sandwich which he said was ok . We did do the molten chocolate chip cookie dessert and that was delicious . Our problem with the young staff came when we asked for coffees and our after dinner drinks to be served in snifters . Unfortunately he paid no never mind to that and brought them out in bullet casing shot glasses . It's ok though , this was not fine dining and I just would have appreciated him saying there are no snifters at the bar . Would I return ? Probably not . Just not memorable enough to go back .

The owner, Sal, came over to our table while we scanned the menus and introduced himself. He gave us a complimentary taco each and said "these are the best tacos you've ever had." I loved the confidence and I loved that he was right. It was love at first bite. We ordered a quesadilla, a chicken salad, a plate of fries, more tacos and a gyro (assuming we would be taking most of it home and eating it for dinner over the week) The quesadilla & gyro were delicious and fresh. They were still tasty as leftovers 2 days later. I wasn't crazy about the salad but that's probably my fault. Ya Hala does comfort junk food - this is not the time to be calorie-conscious. Sal checked in on us a number of times while we were eating. The restaurant is a small hole-in-the-wall with a few booths and a bathroom. I assume most of their business comes from people doing take out at the end of their work day. If I lived or worked closer, I would be a regular customer here. In the end, Sal packed our food in to-go boxes and gave us a free gyro as a surprise. At some point during dinner, my husband mentioned I was Yelp Elite. In the interest of full disclosure, at no point did Sal ask me to leave a favorable review or use his free food as a bargaining chip. This review is done without taking the free gyro into consideration.

Chez Mike - Delicious bread served with calamata olive butter.

Chez Mike

Thirteen years is a long time to have been away from Chez Mike. We've mentioned it multiple times…read moreover those years as a possible dinner location but somehow always ended up someplace else. Gathering with friends on this occasion seemed to be the trick. The restaurant was reasonably busy when we arrived at 5:15 on a Tuesday and all of the unoccupied booths already had reserved signs on them. When we left at 8 p.m. it was still almost full of customers. We sat at the bar with a Chatham Helles Lager ($7) and a refreshing Mocktail ($5) made with cucumber and mint while we waited for our dining companions. Upon seating our party of four into one of those reserved booths, my wife and I started with the Seared Halloumi Cheese ($13) as a shared appetizer. This dish was so attractive and appealing looking that our dining companions also ordered it after we were almost finished with our serving. Maybe our raving about the wonderful flavor of the cheese, the beautiful sear markings, the refreshing aspect of the watermelon pieces, the texture contrast of the pistachios, and the flavor of the honey-sherry vinaigrette also had something to do with their decision. For her entrée, my wife ordered one of the daily specials, Pan Roasted Cod ($35). Served with steamed rice, braised Swiss chard, sweet potato, and a slightly spicy "Holy Trinity" creole sauce, she was very pleased with the dish. My taste of it echoed her sentiment. As I've written previously, I don't get to enjoy lamb at home so I will frequently order it when it's available while dining out. Therefore, the Lamb Feta Burger ($23) had my attention. It was served on a toasted baguette (the same that is served as the delicious bread for the table with calamata olive butter), with caramelized onions, arugula, garlic aioli, and French fries. The lamb was fresh, moist, very mild in flavor, but with only a slight noticeability of the feta cheese. It was delicious! The French fries were served perfectly, hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cups of coffee after dinner were rich and full flavored. Finally, the cubes of brown sugar that I was so pleased to see served thirteen years ago are still being served. Hurrah! Service was friendly and welcoming.

Whether you're coming off a long day at Hunter Mountain or just passing through Windham, this spot perfectly balances a rustic, family-friendly atmosphere with a menu that doesn't cut corners. The Butcher Steaks: This isn't just a "chicken joint." They take their beef seriously, offering fresh-cut, flame-grilled steaks like the 24oz Ribeye and NY Strip. They even age their own steaks in-house when available, resulting in a tender, seasoned-to-perfection cut that rivals high-end steakhouses but at much friendlier "mountain prices." The Signature Fried Chicken: This is the restaurant's namesake for a reason. The chicken is consistently hot, crispy, and juicy. Pro tip: Get the combo that comes with their special honey sauce and "cornbread cake." Dipping the savory, salty skin into that honey is a game-changer. BBQ Ribs: If you're looking for "fall-off-the-bone," you found it. Their ribs are slow-cooked and slathered in a rich, tangy sauce that requires a stack of napkins and zero regrets. Save room--or just admit you're having a second dinner--for the homemade desserts. Their dessert bar and soft-serve ice cream are staples, but the real magic happens in the summer (or around the outdoor firepits) with their S'mores kits. It's the perfect way to cap off a mountain day. With a massive backyard featuring a firepit, live music on the weekends, and a "come as you are" dress code, it's easily the best spot for big groups. The service is fast, the portions are massive, and the "old-school country" energy makes you feel like a local the moment you walk in.
