Ate a quick breakfast at The Athens Rooster this weekend (01/13/2024). Cockadoodledoo! This out of the way corner cafe in Upstate Athens is very homey, open, clean, welcoming and has lots of off beat offerings that a regular passer by would not necessarily expect. It has big windows. For one, they hotly cook-up pizzettes, hot and very flavorful sandwiches, soups, coffees and tea. Right next to the register is a clear glass window box with all sorts of scrumptious sweets, muffins, cakes, tarts, choco donuts and cupcakes - that are made each day, I might add. The display is quaint and spot-on and each dessert is elevated on a tiny cake platter on a doily. Next, all the menu boards (above the counter and to the side) are easily legible, for elderly too. The menu that was handed to me was also not too complicated (2 sides) and was laminated, to avoid Covid. The staff was professional, bouncy (music), well prepared for groups that came and friendly. Some staff even remembered what some of the elderly in line wanted, before they ordered. How is that for manners and style?! Go kick rocks down an alley Starbucks! Lastly - the food and drinks here are simply very outstanding. I do not say that often. My cheese panini-style sandwich had layers of molten and hot cheeses, seared onions and somewhere in that mass also herbs and some dark mustard! It was scrumptious. They serve other classics like turkey, salami, ham sandwiches (some already wrapped for quick sale and go). The Athens Rooster is off the beaten (egg?), no track; (just kidding) but the parking is easy, there are lots of seats and even just simply placing (it's a small gesture, for sure - but chefs like me take note) a large jug full of free lemon water with clean cups on the bar counter at the front, really: makes all the visitors days. Cafe go-ers love those water jugs. Believe me! The Athens Rooster is a well maintained, bright and friendly late breakfast and late lunch spot. This is a nice space in a quiet neighborhood. Excellent pastry made on premises, good espresso drinks and well mannered and competent baristas. They also have creative breakfast options. The big problem here is that they are closed as much as they are open. They are always closed Tuesday and Wednesday but it goes way beyond that. Don't take the trip unless you check in advance to see if they are open. read more

My friends and I only stopped in to get some coffee but everything looked very tempting. The coffee was pretty good and prices are amazing, considering we're from NYC and we haven't had well priced drinks in a while! Coffee was very good, the scones were tasty, the French toast bread pudding is phenomenal. For breakfast, we enjoyed the whitefish salad toast (best white fish I have ever had) and the breakfast burrito (pretty standard; nothing special but still good). For lunch, we loved the brunch pizza. Super fresh homemade dough and really good quality cheeses and sausage. BONUS: They sell pints of Jane's homemade ice cream for $7. When we went, they had vanilla, lavender, lemon, killer chocolate, and peanut butter. We bought the vanilla and it was delicious! Great little coffee shop serving elevated breakfast and lunch. The Cappuccinos were delish and the Adult Grilled Cheese Panini was memorable with just the right amount of rosemary flavor shining through. Will definitely be back to try more of the coffee selection and pastries. The Rhubarb cake was a highlight as were the attentive and friendly staff. Opportunities: More of a minimalist aesthetic inside which could use a little more decor and some eat-in dining ware for those wanting to sit and stay a while. Love visiting every time we're in Athens. They are kind of the only game in town but the quality is what keeps you coming back. Love their homemade chai and breakfasts toasts. Their premade sandwiches are great on the road and they even have frozen items to take home for later. Highly recommend. read more

It looks like a nice space to sit with my laptop for a while & enjoy a drink or some food, so this morning I went in & said I wanted just a regular egg sandwich. No! You can't have anything different or even slightly different from what's on the menu. In other words, even though I don't eat meat, they won't alter their egg, cheese & bacon burrito to suit me. When I said I thought that was a very bad way to deal with customers, the manager came over to tell me why they were right & I was wrong. When I suggested that wasn't a good way to talk with customers, he was all ready to repeat it to me. There's a new brand of managers in restaurants these days. In the old days the customer was "always right." Now, not only is the customer not right, s/he is invariably wrong & told at length in what way. I guess they don't want my business is all I can think. read more

A combination of prepared foods(like breakfast burritos and paninis ready to be heated), one of the best pizzas I've had in the hudson valley, a specials board of fresh soups/salads/entrees, and behind the counter baked goods&coffee - if there's only going to be one breakfast/lunch spot in the village of Athens, I couldn't ask for much more...and added bonus that there are options for my vegan and gluten intolerant friends(which are as delicious as the rest of the menu). read more

I had a wonderful meal at the Athens Rooster today: Murderer's Creek Pizza. The delicious pie included Chorizo, Marinara, Fresh Mozzarella, Parmesan, Oregano and Chili Flakes. It was my kind of spicy! The staff was extremely friendly and courteous, and my pizza arrived quickly (which pleased my empty stomach). The place was also super clean and the tables spaced far apart. Really nice place for breakfast or lunch that you can eat outside or in. The iced tea is great. The sandwiches and flatbread pizzas are also very good. The staff is also very friendly The only disappointment is how the food is served. Pretty much everything you receive is wrapped in Tin foil, extra paper, and to go, even if you're sitting in the place to eat. The food is so good I don't know why they don't want to serve it on a plate presented nicely. Never mind the environmental impact. read more

My husband and I just had bagels and coffee/tea here for breakfast yesterday while we were visiting our son and son-in-law. Bagels were good but the 5 stars really go to the extraordinarily careful food handling and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and attitude of the people who waited on us. We were happy to see a steady flow of customers who mostly seemed like regulars - hopefully they will ensure the long-term success of this much-needed little spot in Athens. read more

Gem of a little cafe. Was recommended by my Airbnb host as a great place for breakfast, coffee, and lunch. I ordered lunch for my family online so we could eat while sitting lakeside at Sleepy Hollow Lake. I dropped by The Athens Rooster to pick up our order - I was a few minutes early so could take a minute to peruse the store. I will be back if for no other reason than to pick out a flavor of Jane's ice cream to bring home. The little home goods store within the restaurant is adorable - their homemade granola, delicious looking hot sauces, bamboo travel utensils, and so on. I need another tote bag like I need a root canal but I am tempted to go back for their black tote. We ordered sandwiches and a salad - all were proclaimed as "delicious!" The Cubano sandwich had tender pulled pork nestled in some ciabatta bread, the turkey and Gruyère sandwich was topped with a fantastic sun dried tomato aioli, the chicken parm Sammie was everything you want in a chicken parm panini - oozing mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, the adult grilled cheese was chef's kiss-worth with cheddar AND fontina cheese and topped with caramelized onions and a rosemary-Dijon, and finally the chicken chipotle salad was deemed as worth passing up the sandwiches for! Have I made you want to stop by yet? We have to come back to try breakfast! The only bummer is that they're not open 7 days a week - some members of the family who had to head home early are bummed that they missed the feast. read more

The coffee spot for the village! Great coffee and usually friendly staff working the register. They have an expanded lunch menu and bring a sophisticated breakfast option to the village. Very clean and organized, whenever my friends from the city are visiting "the Rooster" is a must for them daily. Work trucks fill the parking spots in the morning to get coffee and breakfast before their days. They serve the village well and seem to get a good amount of business. Having a barista separate from the cashier at all times would help with timing. Wish they had longer operating hours. Not a fan of the chairs and tables but they do the job. read more

My first visit this week. I was looking forward to it as I regularly patronized the previous cafe in the building and enjoyed the food and service. The first thing I noticed was there was no pricing listed on the wall signs for beverages or bakery items in the case. Also No prices on the takeout items in the cold case. No matter, I went ahead and ordered a 12 oz coffee and 3 baked items for my family to go. Surprised at the amount of my bill for 4 items, and at the small size of the baked goods, which IMO were not that good quality. I feel that the AR is geared more to downstaters and transplants with deep pockets from NYC than us born and bred locals. While I like to support local business, it would serve you well to at least prepare patrons for your prices instead of a suprise at the checkout read more
