This is a surprisingly large restaurant with a nice ambiance and friendly service. I ordered the agedeshi tofu and the sushi and sashimi for two. The agedeshi tofu was solid. The sushi-sashimi for two came in a beautiful boat, with a large number of pieces. I think the boat is probably large enough food for three. The sushi itself was quite fresh with a good and varied selection. They have an extensive menu and I look forward to trying some other dishes here. read more

Could be a little crispier. The service atleast at the bar took a while and doesn't feel like planned out feels kinda chaotic even though like not that many people are here at 7:30pm on a Tuesday. Reused menus are a no go I don't like them. It devalues the image and they are always kind sticky. I'm not sure why or what's going on in the restaurant but there is like fruit flies buzzing around everywhere. I ordered the smoked toro and shaved truffle box. The box came out smoky and smelling great. The box itself doesn't seem to be super clean which was upsetting and the sushi wasn't as cold and fresh as I would have wanted it to be. They came as four slices and were ok, followed by Miso Soup, Edamame, Crispy Tuna with Truffle Oil and the Shrimp Tempura. All of which were satisfactory. And for rolls we selected the Dancing Salmon Roll, Salmon Family Roll, the Triple Three Roll, Dynamite Roll, Dreams Come True Roll a Spicy and Scallop Hand Roll & Spicy Tuna Roll Hand Roll All the rolls were very tasty. The management & service rocks; it's an awesome team! The vibes are on point & everything is delicious! My favorite starter is the spicy tuna pizza; it's so fun, the tuna is extra fresh & it's plated beautifully! The cocktails are extra tasty, a lychee martini pairs perfectly with sushi, but every cocktail is great! A solid, intimate date night spot. The lights are dim, the drinks are flowing, and the food could not be better. We started off strong with the crispy tuna with truffle oil as our appetizer. Wow, I would come back just for that. Then, for our rolls I got the Kiss of Fire and we split the Angry Lobster roll. I have never seen a sushi roll with a full lobster tail on top of it and I'm glad we chose to order it. Combining two of my favorite seafood items, sushi and lobster, was a brilliant choice. I started with a gin & tea, which was crisp and delightful. I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi Combo and boy oh boy was it a good choice! I had no idea it would be served on a big boat but the presentation was only topped by the flavor. Every piece of fish tasted fresh and was cut well. Absolute amazing experience. The food was delicious, ambiance was really fun and the service was top notch. The edamame was a classic starter. The red chili dumplings were such a great addition. They are pretty spicy so keep that in mind but cooked perfectly and had a ton of flavor. The classic sushi rolls were exactly what you'd expect and the dynamite roll was perfect. I chose 698 to thank my best friend and her daughter for coming down to help me make my apartment a home and it was a great choice. We were there around noon on a Sunday so they were not very busy but that was okay with us. I had made a Resy reservation because they recommended it. The interior is decorated very well and the light is slightly dimmed for a nice ambiance! They have really nice, and solid, dinnerware and glassware. We started with the crab rangoon tarts, 3 in an order, and the edamame. The tart shells were so buttery and the filling was the usual luscious crab mix. The edamame comes with salt or spicy, we chose salt. There was enough for all 3 of us. The drinks we chose were the Gin & Tea and the Lychee Martini. Both were delicious and the foam on both were handshaken and so creamy. The Gin & Tea was a surprise winner and I highly recommend it. We ordered 5 rolls. The Naruto, Center, Fantastic, Tiger and Dancing Salmon. I love Naruto rolls without the rice and nori, instead wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber. This one was well made and stayed together when using my chopsticks. It allows the fish to shine! The Center Roll had spicy tuna and a topping of avocado, masago and spicy mayo. It's what you would expect and well done. The Tiger Roll has a mix inside and on top. Each bite was a little different and delicious. The Fantastic Roll was just that! It had a lobster salad inside and slightly scorched Japanese scallops on top. The smokiness of the scallop was surprising and delicate and complemented the sweeter lobster salad. The Dancing Salmon roll had eel inside and salmon outside. I'm not a huge eel fan but this roll I ate and enjoyed. I hadn't had good restaurant sushi since NYC and this was up there with it. First time trying this spot. I was walking down high street and noticed it earlier this week I knew I had to try it. It's a Sunday afternoon and the place is dead. I'm the only person here. The restaurant is very cool inside. Nice vibe. I remember the space as El Segundo Mexican restaurant. Unfortunately, it didn't last very long. I personally like the changes they have made to transform it into an Asian kitchen. The menu is large. You have a nice variety of Asian food options and my favorite...SUSHI! The Short North needed a good sushi spot. I have high hopes. I ordered a Flying Dragon roll and a shrimp tempura roll. They both were beautifully presented and tasted delicious. I'm excited to come back for more sushi. I also ordered Beef Bulgolgi. I was very disappointed with this dish. It came out on a hot skillet and it looked like fajita meat and onions. It reminded me of more Mexican than Asian. It lacked much taste at all, except the onion. The meat wasn't tender as advertised in the menu. I was expecting more of a mongolian beef type dish with tender filet mignon beef. This was unfortunately tough. I hate to be that person that returns a meal, but this really wasn't good at all. At the request of the server, I decided to go with a different dish- the Yaki Udon. The flavor was ok, nothing special. My biggest complaint is the noodles are way over cooked and soggy. Udon noodles should have some chew to them. I hate to seem like I'm complaining. I just see some real room for improvement here. The service was good. Friendly and professional. You can tell a lot about a place by how they handle a problem. I thought they handled it well. One recommendation I'd give them is to follow up with the customer after they have taken a few bites of the food. I did have to wait awhile before they circled back to check on me. Remember, I'm the only person in the restaurant at this time. My initial impression is I'd come back here for sushi any day of the week. As for the other Asian dishes, the jury is still out. Maybe it was an off day. Maybe they still have some bugs to work out. I gave them feedback, now it's up to them to see what they do with it. I really want places like this to succeed. I had a fantastic solo dinner at this restaurant last night. I came without a reservation, but was lucky to grab a seat at the bar. The restaurant was absolutely hopping! There were a lot of patrons and the energy level was high. It was very busy for a Friday night, so I would recommend getting a reservation. The menu is beautifully designed with artistic photographs of food and drink that they serve. The restaurant itself is chic and gave sophisticated Izakaya vibes. The bartenders and servers were working furiously and were very attentive. My meal included hot sake, the Omakase nigiri sampler, the Kiss of Fire roll and the truffle fried rice topped with crab. I love it here :) I've been once for lunch and again for dinner and each time I enjoyed myself. My fav spot was the booth by the window, but there's plenty of cute decor to enjoy in other areas. I can't remember the name of the sushi roll I tried, but it was delish along with the mushroom pasta. Great experience here! Stopped in last week for an early dinner. Very intimate space but also lots of tables. Only ordered food, so I cannot comment on their drinks. Our server Riley was very friendly and helped us navigate their large menu. Sushi was delicious; I especially recommend the crunchy California roll. We started with appetizers of crab Rangoon and spicy edamame. I only got one bite of the crab Rangoon because my husband loved them so much. They weren't traditional crab Rangoon. They were a little more round and danish looking. They were called "tarts". The edamame was fantastic and we dipped the pods in the crab Rangoon dip. Next we got sushi! Man these were great! We ordered shrimp tempura, add cream cheese and add asparagus. We also ordered the pink lady. These were delicious. I've been searching for Haiku level sushi ever since it closed and this is the closest I've found! For the entree, we ordered General Tsos. This was SO good, but we were full, so we took it to go. We stopped in for takeout on a Saturday. The restaurant appeared to have a nice ambiance and the front house staff were friendly. Having gotten sushi around the world and in many US cities, the sushi rolls were on par price wise with major cities and a bit expensive compared to smaller cities and towns. I was a bit skeptical if it would live up to the price and my expectations seeing some of the offerings. We had a spicy tuna roll, a bluefin tuna avocado, and a philly roll plus a kani salad. The spicy tuna was a pretty typical offering flavor and texture wise. It was good, but not notable. The Philly roll was good, but had a bit of a vinegar tang to it. Still, it was quite good. Wonderful night out for us! Service was very friendly, and the vibes of this new place is beautiful. You can tell a lot of love and creativity went into this place. This is a third restaurant by the same owners I believe of Song Lan in Dublin and 1126. We've been to both and enjoyed them, but this for sure was our favorite out of the three and we will be returning soon. Per usual like the other two restaurants, they've perfected the harmony of their cocktails. Highly recommend the gin and tea cocktail, and they had this great green tea white wine that I've never seen and got curious of-- amazing! This restaurant of the three is more hot food heavy-- however, we were more in the mood for sushi last night. Got the hamachi appetizer, and crispy tuna with truffle oil. AMAZING! Who knew truffle oil and tuna went so well together. Which leads me to the star of the show, which was their fancy smoked toro with truffle. My FAVORITE and still craving it now. This one's a special and not on their menu, but also for it and you won't regret it. On the pricier side, I think $28-30 but trust me, it is quality. It was described as wagyu of the sea which may sound like a upsell, but I've had toro before which is a favorite of mine at high end sushi spots and it is absolutely worth it. You also can't go wrong with the presentation, do it! I know a few have mentioned concern of slow service. We could not have had a more different experience. Our service was perfect, not slow and also not overly checking in, drinks came out quick for us. Pepper Steak - 2 Bulgogi - 2 Fried Rice - 2.5 Service (sitdown) New server (being shadowed) but all was well, service was friendly and efficient. Food was timely. Ambience Fun and funky dark upscale atmosphere with bursts of light, color and whimsy. We reserved a booth which was super comfy and private. The Hamachi was the highlight--fresh, with a nice touch of heat, though the sauce was a bit heavy and overshadowed the fish slightly. Not quite Nobu-level, but definitely enjoyable. I did not like the Bluefin Nigeri, it was a bit dry and I didn't like the flavor. However I've never had it before so have no basis for rating it. Unfortunately, the Pepper Steak and Bulgogi were underwhelming--both were tender enough, but lacked seasoning and came in very light, watery sauces which also lacked flavor. We found ourselves reaching for soy sauce often to bring in some flavor and seasoning. The Fried Rice was serviceable, though nothing particularly memorable. read more

Sushi is really good and rumor has it that they use real Wasabi I finally tried the Crispy Rice Tuna Truffle during Happy Hour and I was so happy that I only paid $12. Although the ingredients are expensive, it's not something I would order again. I expected a more golden fry on the Crispy Rice all around (it fell apart in my hands at times). I could not taste the truffle (and yes i have tasted real truffle before, so I know what it's supposed to taste like in a dish). The Tuna didn't have a bright color to it. I wish the Menu matched the elegancy of the space, because it is very beautiful in there. All in all i plan to go back there a few more times and try other items that they have read more

There are several seating options including booths, hight top tables and larger options for groups. Large full service bar with lots of seating. Ok 698, I give you five stars all the way. And for just opening a few weeks ago, that's saying something! This new restaurant, which is a "sister" restaurant of 1126 down the street, just opened in October and took over the old El Segundo. They updated the space by adding a sushi bar, new murals on the walls, hanging umbrellas and cherry blossoms, but if you came to El Segundo often (like me), you can still see a few remnants from the past. The menu includes everything from sushi to specialty dishes from the kitchen like udon and fried rice. It's a rather big menu and it took a hot minute for my guest and I to decide on things, but every choice we made was a good one. We both started with a cocktail and I went with the gin and tea. It was the cutest thing, came out in a tea cup. It was so funny, I don't know why, but I took off the lid thinking it was going to be hot, but of course, it wasn't. The vessel definitely confused my mind. That being said, it was heavenly. As for appetizers, the crab rangoon tarts were interesting and nothing like you would expect when you order the typical crab rangoon. There's three and they are baked. Very yummy. I also got a shrimp tempura roll, which is very basic I know, but I tend to judge the sushi at a spot based on something basic before jumping in full force with a $20 roll. It was in fact delicious, so I can definitely see myself coming back for more sushi. For my entree I went with the yaki udon with shrimp and it was freakin' amazing. I'm not a big leftover girlie, but I took every bite I had left and enjoyed it for dinner the next night. The noodles were the absolute star of the show. Seriously, the best thing out of everything I ate. We ended our meals with dessert. The mushroom shaped mousse dessert with a berry compote inside was so cute to look at and delicious to eat.
