While in Rome from October 18 to October 25 my wife and I accepted the recommendation from our hotel and went to the restaurant That's Amore. The hotel had said that we would need reservations but we were there very early and they were able to provide us with a table provided we could vacate that table later in the evening when they had a booking for it. We said we could do that and were very glad that we did so as the food and the service were superb. So much so that we made reservations for two more dinners and were very pleased to find that the food was consistently excellent as was the service. The wait staff recognized us and enthusiastically greeted us on our second and third visits.
On our first night we ordered a bottle of the house white wine on the assumption that the quality of the house wine tells a good deal about the quality of the restaurant. Theirs was very good indeed and inexpensive for an Italian restaurant at 20 Euros. We noticed that a lot of diners were splitting courses so we split a Specialitá Napoletano, which is rolled hand-made pizza dough with prosciutto, mozzarella, and chicory cut into six slices. It was delicious. We didn't have a pasta dish as we normally would have because we knew they needed the table. For her main course my wife had grilled octopus which she absolutely loved. She gave me bites and although I had never eaten octopus before I liked it very much. I ordered Gamberi with Cognac (very large grilled shrimps with a hint of cognac over a bed of salad greens) for my main course. There were four very large and perfectly grilled shrimp. We both liked our main courses so much that we split them on our third visit to the restaurant.
On our second visit we split a Prosciutto di Parma e Mozzarella di Bufala con focaccia calda (warm bread) which was very tasty. Next we split a Pasta Carbonara - homemade pasta with pork cheek which is similar to bacon in taste, egg, a light sauce and pecorino cheese. This was absolutely superb. For our main course we split Chef Fabio Bongianni's Medaglioni con Funghi - veal medallions with in season porcini mushrooms. This was a fabulous dish with very tasty mushrooms and tender, lightly sauced veal. For dessert we shared a Millefoglie con crema e scaglie di choccolato. This was a homemade mille feuille with Chantilly crème and flakes of chocolate. It was probably a thousand calories but well worth it as it was truly delicious.
On out third visit we shared the Specialitá Napoletano, then shared the Risotto ai Funghi Porcini which we greatly enjoyed. After that we shared the Gamberi with Cognac which I had so enjoyed on our first visit. This time, though, they gave us six very large shrimps. Finally we shared the grilled octopus which, if anything, tasted even better than on the first night. We were considerably too full to order any dessert though I truly regretted not having enough room to order the Millefoglie again.
I have to say a few words about the wait staff. The Maitre 'd Mario, Nico, Kelvin, Melissa, and another young woman whose name I can't remember were all wonderful to us on all three visits. I have read a few reviews that complained about the service but I have nothing but praise for the service we had. And unlike some other reviewers I heard a lot of Italian being spoken. Given its location near the Trevi Fountain, and excellent food and service, it is unfair to deride it as a touristy restaurant. Of course a lot of tourists want to go there. And so they should. It is relatively small and very busy so do get reservations. read more
