Good Thai food in the hood!!! I had the opportunity to try this spot through my $10 voucher with Livingsocial.com and I must say it was darn good. I'm not going to put this at the very top of my list for the best Thai that I've ever had in the DMV but I will say it's the best Thai carryout I've ever had!!! Being that I read the reviews before placing my order I decided to go with the popular choices. So as a result I ordered the shrimp rolls and had to stop myself from eating them all up on the ride home lol. Sadly only two out of the five survived by the time I made it home (come on it's a 20 min ride). For my at home entree I had the pineapple fried rice and it was very tasty. I've never had tomatoes let alone pineapples in my fried rice but it was definitely a great combination! Oh please let me not forget to mention how lovely the staff was. Since I love the Thai spice rack I asked if they had some togo. The nice young lady asked me which ones I liked and she nicely packed my favorites in small togo containers with no problem. For a carryout meal, everything was just right and exactly what I ordered. Upon getting home, about 20 minutes from pickup time, the food was still hot from the smart insultated packaging. The fried food remained crispy because they used a paper-based container and poked holes for steam release. The food was tasty and hit the spot for dinner satisfaction. On another note I was pleased to see that Thai Orchid chose to reinvest profits back into the interior space, and therefore it's community. Unlike some restaurants in Ward 7, they value the customer's aesthetic/architectural experience. At the time of their opening, the place reflected more of a typical "Chinese" carryout. This is one of the best Thai food I have ever had. The food is authentic and better than most of Thai restaurants I have been to. The restaurant is nice inside even though the outside looks a bit rough. The food was delicious and the portion was very generous for the price they charged. I had a small party so I ordered a bigger portion than their regular portion. My favorite is the drunken spaghetti since I couldn't find it at most of the restaurants near me. Their Thai iced tea is also delicious. The owner is nice and friendly. I would definitely recommend this place to my friend. On 10/27/12, Mara G. and I were heading over to RFK stadium to pick up some sandbags to put around my back door in case the impending supposedly catastrophic Hurricane Sandy turned out to flash flood my neighborhood. As soon as I got in the car, I was like "I'm hungry. I need protein." She suggested Thai Orchid mainly because it was on the way. LOL. We parked on the side of the former Granny's Carry Out and I finally had the opportunity to try this spot that I've had bookmarked for more than one year. Well sort of. We were in a big hurry. It was 5:20 and sandbag distro ended at 6 so I tried tempura shrimp. The guy who took my order assured me it would only take five minutes. He was right. Six minutes later, I was back in the car chowing down on some of the best shrimp tempura I have had in a while. It was piping hot. The breading was not overwhelming. There were five plump shrimp that were not all disguised by the breading. And there was some broccoli and carrot tossed in to round out the box. Oh and the sweet and sour sauce, I am quite sure it was home made. Not from the anonymous jar of Asian sauces. Oh, yeah, and we made it to RFK for the sandbags with PLENTY of time to spare! I wanted curry in a hurry (well, within an hour) and ordered Red Curry with chicken and Green Curry with tofu from Thai Orchid's Kitchen on Seamless. Overall, it was OK and I'm not opposed to ordering from here again, but I can't say that either dish was remarkable. Let's start with the red curry. It was supposed to be spicy, but to me, it was fairly neutral. The chicken was good (not dry--and getting dry chicken in curry is one of the worst things ever) but the curry itself was just OK. Not fantastic, not bad. It was nicely balanced in that there wasn't too much onion or too much coconut milk, etc. Alas, I can't say the same thing for the green curry, which was bland...bland...bland. It tasted as if they used twice as much coconut milk as it needed, and that completely washed out the dish. The curry was really a bit watery as well. The white rice was fine, and I have to give them points for using a good short-grain variety that absorbs a bit of the curry flavor (well, in the red curry, since the green one doesn't have much flavor). The delivery man arrived at 5:50PM on the dot, which was the earlier part of when Seamless said he would. Well-timed! On the whole, I'd skip the green curry next time and perhaps request that they make all the dishes Thai spicy for a boost of flavor. read more

This Thai spot is my new local favorite. I've eaten here a few times and see no reason to go to a farther Thai spot. They do phone and online orders for pick up and delivery. Portions are great and the food is tasty. I wish the crispy chicken had a little more sauce for the rice, I'm sure they would have given some extra but I didn't realize it until I got home. Then I opened the container and it has this slime like consistency. The peanuts were clumped to one side so I put it into a bowl to mix it up. As I was mixing it it just didn't seem right. We were craving Thai food so we decided to order from here since it's the closest Thai restaurant to our house. The food was delivered reasonably fast and for the second time every single thing we ordered was delicious. We had spring rolls, dumplings, green papaya salad, drunken noodles and a few other dishes. If you don't like spicy food make sure to let them know to turn down the heat because they don't play when it comes to spice. All of the dishes were full of flavor and they give you a nice selection of dipping sauces to accompany them. This place is on my short list of great Thai restaurants in DC and I love that fact that it's East of the River which is super convenient to where we live. The green curry is fantastic here. The broth is so flavorful and it's consistency is thick and wholesome. We ordered it with shrimp and even after delivery, they were not over cooked. We also tried the dumplings, spring rolls and pad Thai. The spring rolls were mediocre but the dumplings were good. I enjoyed this style of pad Thai as it was more on the tamarand side than it was peanut. They also use the narrower rice noodles which gives the dish a thinner consistency. The drunken noodles are also great at this spot. I ordered extra spicy and it was very tolerable so if you love spice maybe try extra-extra spicy. read more

I work a few miles away and my coworkers and I were looking for a change up of the chains near the Navy Yard. What a delight it was to Yelp and find Thai Orchid's Kitchen.  We ordered the gambit for lunch: Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai, Green Curry, Cashew Nut, Pineapple Fried Rice, Siam Fried Rice, Chicken Satay, and Dumplings to top it off.  The restaurant was able to knock out this order and have it ready in no time.  The consensus around the water cooler was 'delicious'.  The Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles had great flavor.  The dumplings were golf ball sized and steamed perfectly.  The meats were not overdone, the shrimp in the Pineapple Rice was not overdone, as some shrimp dishes are, and they were a good sized shrimp.  We are adding this to our lunch options for sure read more

I strongly suspect my major reason for liking Thai Orchid is neither a valid or commendable one (because it provides delivery of THAI food from the hood to my doorstep), but given that the choices for delivery to the lower regions of Capitol Hill are limited, at best, I'm enthused by the addition of a restaurant from a remote culinary destination to the Capitol Hill Thai food delivery scene. I'm not sure it supplants Sanphan as my choice selection for Thai delivery, but it certainly provides an acceptable alternative. The cuisine at Thai Orchid most resembles what I have eaten at Urban Thai in Crystal City in that dishes are prepared differently than I would have expected (which, admittedly, might be my own fault). For example, I ordered Crispy Shrimp with Basil and was expecting grilled shrimp drizzled in oil and topped with a combination of Thai hot chili peppers and fried basil. I was quite surprised to find two containers -- one was filled with a dark brown gravy encapsulating red peppers, white onions, and green basil and the other contained large breaded jumbo fried shrimp with fried carrot and fried green beans. Thai Orchid's take wasn't as spicy as I was expecting (I ordered "Thai Hot"), but it was nonetheless satisfying. The other items I ordered included a set of steamed combination meat dumplings and steamed chive dumplings. The meat dumplings were relatively complex for dumplings with even a little bit of bacon-like meat served on top but I actually preferred the chive dumplings without the accompanying dumpling sauce. In any event, neither set of dumplings was so remarkable that I would order them again, but I like that they at least provide them. While I am not completely sold on Thai Orchid yet, I suspect that might change when I try some of the most commond orders (like the green/red curries, drunken noodles, etc.). At this point, if you happen to live in the Capitol Hill South neighborhood, it's worth a visit or a delivery order. Otherwise, I would not necessarily go seek it out on your own volition. read more

We've ordered takeout here several times since moving away from our favorite Thai place. Tonight, everything with a high oil content had separated by the time it got to our house, the drunken noodles were bland and poorly sauteed and... we got a cockroach in our panang curry. I don't expect too much out of DC Thai restaurants, but everyone should expect better than this. Reviewing two recent health inspections revealed that they had recently changed ownership and had a very, very bad inspection and then passed their reinspection.
