While sitting with my party of three, the host was horrible with customer service and didn't want to address our questions about the menu. My mother is older and didn't have her glasses. Thai Diner's food was so over-spiced and so hot that my granddaughter threw up, and I could not eat my medium dish, even after mixing in extra noodles and rice. We threw BOTH DISHES in the garbage after paying $38 for two dinners. I asked about the amount of spice and couldn't get a clear answer; it was supposed to be a medium spicy chicken Pad Thai and a spicy vegetable Pad Thai. On this, our second visit, the food was just as good and the prices fair, but the service left something to be desired. We were not greeted when we arrived, only told to find our own table. It took quite a while for our server to welcome us and bring our water even though the place was virtually empty on a Sunday night with two servers working. We ordered the Mini Steamed Buns ($5.95) with sweet pork sausage and dried shredded pork on wheat flour buns and the Crispy Spring Rolls ($4.25 - Regular/chicken). The server asked me if we wanted the chicken spring rolls even though I ordered the "regular" variety which, according to the menu, come with chicken. I said. "yes, of course". After taking our order, our server indicated that "everything" would be out shortly, but if you know me, you know I detest entrees arriving before the appetisers have been finished. I asked her to please hold the entrees until we had finished our starters, to which she readily agreed. The steamed buns (3) were OK even though the steamed whole wheat buns were not even baked. They had an odd look and texture (like eating raw bread dough) and were too big for the tiny dipping cups, but the flavor was decent. Not something we would order again. The spring rolls were good and a decent value at $4.25. The dipping sauces came in teeny weeny cups, too small even for the fried spring rolls which were not that big to begin with. As I mentioned, the entrees did not arrive until we had finished our appetisers, so once we were done with the starters we waited and waited and waited, and more than 10 minutes later our entrees were finally in front of us. My wife had the Yum-Tum Phad Thai ($9.95) which she raved about, a stir fry of rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, cabbage and lemon grass with tofu. She cleaned her plate and would have likely licked it clean (I'm joking of course) if we were not in public, stating "that was absolutely delicious". I decided to try the Yellow Curry with beef ($9.25), a good size portion of potato pieces, yellow onion, sliced carrots and thinly sliced beef in a deliciously sweet, savory and spicy curry that dazzled the senses. It was an excellent curry. The decor is simple and basic, but tasteful, but I would recommend not sitting anywhere near the double front doors on a cold and/or windy night because our napkins flew and the chill was breathtaking every time someone entered or left, some several times, including one couple who did not know the difference between Thai and sushi, having missed their mark by several hundred feet and leaving as quickly as they had entered. Even though the service was suspect on this occasion, a plus was that I found out that you can "BYOB" (meaning wine I believe), because they advertise "no cork (corkage) fee". The minuses, they insist on "tipping your server appropriately" (better left unsaid as common sense tells you that if they provide the glasses and uncork the wine, then you should tip accordingly) and that you must leave any unconsumed alcohol behind (which is likely state law). Heed not the nondescript strip mall location; this is the place to go in Lawrence for Thai. It's owned by the former owners of Topeka's Tup Tim, and all of my husband's coworkers in his Topeka office are super jealous that this deliciousness is now a little over half a mile from my house. There's not much going on, decor-wise, but the menu board and the people watching (it's a very small space) make up for it. The staff is attentive and always on their toes. It's as if they can read your mind when you need something. Unfortunately, they don't deliver, which is probably good for my bank account, and take out times can be over an hour on weekend nights, but that goes to show how popular they are and how they care about making food to order. I haven't ordered a dish that I wouldn't rave about (and my husband and I have probably eaten the entire menu at least once), even the curries (I don't like sweets, so I couldn't eat an entire bowl of coconut curry, but I always steal a bite of my husband's). I order takeout pretty regularly, usually ordering pad Thai or pad kee mao. Thai Diner was recommended was the best Thai in town. It is decent. The seasoning always tastes great, though the spice level is highly variable (sometimes a medium is pretty bland, sometimes it's a tear-jerker). The meat seems to be cooked separately, so it is generally dry and flavorless, which is the main letdown. read more

Very impressed on my first visit. My dining companions ordered yellow and green curry medium spicy. Both really enjoyed their meals. I had Basil Fried Rice with chicken. It had a lot of flavor. We also ordered steamed buns, which were interesting. They had some sort of dried pork for the filling. It had a nice salty flavor, but the texture was like an old wool sweater. Typically, in my experience, when a restaurant closes for whatever reason and is followed by another restaurant it's a recipe for failure. Based on what we experienced and tasted, that will not occur here. Came not really knowing what to expect other than that awful sign out front and questionable name (diner? Not a diner, a very nice restaurant) sure made it look like a venture run by folks without much experience. I stand corrected because the experience was about everything done right. They actually have a lot of experience and it shows. Professional decor, much improved over previous tenant, expert wait staff, friendly, quick, attentive and knowledgeable. And the food was first rate and priced right. We started with steamed dumplings and then ordered the Gapow special and a red curry, Thai hot with shrimp. The dumplings were plentiful, 8 if I recall, and the entrees were done exceptionally well. I drive to Kansas City regularly to have this kind of red curry so I know what I really like and enjoy. This is done right. The heat was coming mainly from real peppers, not someone in the back dumping in dried pepper flakes (a peeve). Everything went really well and in my mind I was thinking, "wow, this is an easy four stars." But then dessert, a purple yam ice cream over top of a sweet coconut sticky rice that was warm so you get the cold, flavorful ice cream and the warm sweetness and savory from the rice and all of it topped with whipped cream. Not normally the dessert type but this was off the scale is a good way. The only thing left is what to order when we return. I expect Thai Diner to flourish! Count me a fan. There are a couple of other Thai eateries in town but this is clearly head and shoulders above the other two. I recently tried the panang curry chicken (hot), the pineapple curry with chicken, and the house soup that was made with jasmine rice. Everything was delicious. The hot spice level was nice. The soup was very fresh and had a lot of great flavors. It was perfect for a chilly day. The panang curry is sweeter than how I prepare it at home, but the flavor was great. The best place for Thai food in Lawrence and in KC. The staff is always friendly, and helpful. Met the owner multiple times. She loves to interact with the customers and get feedback. I have been going to this place for nearly two years, almost three times a week. Dine there a few times and they'll remember your name, what you like, how you like it, and make it custom to you. I was pleased and surprised to find a great Thai place in Kansas. To be fair, I have never been to Kansas before. Relatively small place in a strip mall of chain restaurants. To be honest, this place should be packed. The best Thai food I have consumed since I was in Thailand three years ago. I don't even like calamari but I'm always willing to try again. When my co-diner ordered I figured why not? After consuming a healthy portion we were almost ready for our meal. But first we had to get all the little crunchy bits still on the plate. Fresh, not chewy (which is why I don't usually eat calamari), It was accompanied by a nice sauce with a little bit of kick to it. My roommate and I shared the scallops and Pad Thai. The scallops were perfectly cooked. We tried the garlic sauce which added to it's deliciousness. The accompanying pineapple fried rice was a heavenly burst of flavors. The Pad Thai was moist and flavorful with a plethora of shrimp. There was plenty so we had leftovers. Sadly my roommate swooped on the Pad Thai the next day so I was forced to eat my friend's leftover beef fried rice. Yum. They don't sell alcohol but they have a BYOB policy and don't charge a corkage fee. Just know that if you don't drink the whole bottle, it will stay at the restaurant and be disposed. We have found it--great Thai food in Lawrence! Finally! Just like my pizza, I'm picky about my Thai food. My husband and I ate here for the first time 2 weeks ago and have already been back 3 times. We love Thai food and missed it greatly when we moved to Lawrence from KC. He is Filipino and this is the closest he can get to some of the flavors he enjoyed growing up. (Although there is a new Filipino restaurant opening in KC to try). I have given this a solid 5 starts for service, price, ambiance and food. We start with the fresh spring rolls with shrimp. For dinner we get the Gapaw pork (hot) with soft eggs, he Panang (hot) and Traditional fried rice. All cooked perfect with great flavors. I'm not one for Pad Thai---however you have to serve good Pad Thai to call yourself a Thai restaurant in KS. Theirs is tasty, perfect consistency on the noodles. Finally we had the sweet coconut sticky rice dessert. Delish!! Like Scott T said the price is right too. Very reasonably priced and the menu is simple with all the necessities for a great restaurant but not overwhelming like some places can be. The service was excellent, the restaurant itself was nicely put together. I appreciated the chef coming out twice during our first meal to make sure everything was perfect and to thank us for eating in his restaurant. I hope the owners like it here in Lawrence, because it's a wonderful little gem for this town. I'll be a regular for years to come. read more

By far the best Thai food ever. I have been all over the country and even to Thailand. Mama Ann's food is the best. She knows how to cook Thai food for the American palate. I understand the prices are slightly on the high side, but with the cost of raw materials skyrocketing and their people needing to be paid a fair living wage, I am all in. I pass through Lawrence two times a year and will eating at Thai Diner next time. I had Mango Madness with shrimp. Really fresh and the heat level (they asked me how spicy I wanted it) was just right with the mango. Mango Madness was a special and will probably rotate off the menu for something else just as good. The portion of the dish also became smaller. We came here from when they started their business. They used to serve much bigger portion in every dish. Once inside, customer seating area is enough for a small crowd. Ambience is all right. We were immediately seated by a lady. Orders were taken immediately.
