I ordered a Thai iced tea which was super sweet, but I enjoy it on the sweet side so that was okay with me! I also ordered the Okame Udon, and while simple in seasoning and flavor, it's a delicious hearty dish. My friend ordered the drunken noodles and really enjoyed them. Went for late lunch on Friday and dining area was not too busy or loud. We got a basket of complimentary shrimp chips after we ordered. Calamari appetizer came out quickly, but entrees were taking a bit longer. Our waiter must have noticed because he asked whether we want more shrimp chips while we wait. Entrees finally came. We were too hungry to take pictures. Som Tum (papaya salad) was not spicy compared with the ones I've had in Thailand and in other authentic Thai restaurants. This makes me feel like this restaurant is toned down for American taste buds. Pad see ewe with chicken was good but on the sweet side. Portions were plentiful, like getting dinner size all day. I stopped into Zen Zero last night for dinner before a show at Liberty Hall. I lived in Lawrence for years and never got around to trying them. I knew it was Asian food, but didn't know anything else about it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had Panang curry on the menu so I got it. It was really well done. I've had better, but it was delicious enough that I didn't waste any. The service was good, but nothing spectacular. The restaurant wasn't the cleanest I've seen and there was nothing special about it, but I don't usually expect much from a downtown Lawrence restaurant. There was only one server for the entire restaurant so my Pad Thai had been sitting for a while and was gummy. It was not enjoyable at all and though I got a to-go box, I decided to pitch it once I left because I figured if it was bad once it would be bad twice. I sympathize with staffing problems but I still want decent food, you know? It's not exceptionally cheap so I felt like I didn't get my money's worth. This is one of my favorite Asian places. Their Pad Thai is delicious, very reasonably priced ($11 before protein besides tofu) and their portion sizes are huge. Every now and then they have a special for Crab Rangoon's which are to die for. They're a unique twist on Crab Rangoon's and 10/10 would recommend trying these if they're available. My friend recommended this place so we came for a Sunday lunch, which wasn't busy at all so we got seated right away. I noticed the dining room could use some better cleaning, but alright, the vibe is casual. Menu prices are pretty reasonable and there are a ton of veggie options. I believe this is an Asian fusion restaurant, but with a heavy emphasis on Thai. I ordered the thupka soup, recommended by my server. I do love Thai food a lot but it wasn't my favorite--it was just lacking the punchy flavor I expect from Thai food and Asian soups. My friend got the drunken noodles, which she had before and liked, but this time she said the noodles were undercooked and it didn't taste as good. Service was very friendly but not quite as attentive as I would expect for a nearly empty restaurant. It wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't great. My daughter could not eat it and I took one bite and lost my appetite. My bowl of noodles had absolutely no flavor. It was like plain noodles sitting in hot water. When I asked for hoisin so I could add flavor, the server charged me for it. Almost all Thai or noodle restaurants automatically give you things to add to your soup, such as sriracha and hoisin. Not here. My husband and other daughter ordered the same bowl of noodles and added dumplings to their bowl for an additional $2. They each got ONE dumping in their soup. WHAT?! So we paid $4 extra for TWO dumplings... We will unfortunately never return and do not recommend. read more

Zen Zero has been one of my go-to Lawrence Restaurants for 15 + years. They have put a great spin in Thai/Thai fusion and perfected classic dishes like Singapore Noodles, Pad Thai and Massaman Curry. Since the pandemic some of the recipes changed a little with supply issues which has been a hard adjustment for me but I still consider ZZ to be a great and family/vegetarian/vegan friendly option. read more

So the wife and I had the day off and took a trip to Lawrence and ended up here. The Bar Tender was our server and just wow. Told him the wife has an eating disorder (vegetarian not vegan) but I'm normal and will have the beef with my curry. He chuckled and was extremely helpful to ensure my wife's eating disorder was in the forefront. He explained how they will substitute oyster sauce for another option among a few other things. I am hesitant on posting this because the food was very good once I got my correct order... however, the service is some of the worst I have ever experienced. I came in around 4:00ish two other tables were in the restaurant at the time. I stood at the host stand for some time waiting to get sat, while I watched the wait staff chat it up. I got sat, and from there it just got worse.. it took roughly 10 minutes for me to have anyone come up to me and offer to get me a drink. I assume they had a shift change, but getting my drink order, or at least a water and and explanation that a server will be with me soon would've been sufficient. I finally got water by a lady who I assume was a manager, at this point in time I was ready to order. Still no sign of my server. I saw the waitstaff chatting and when the conversation was over I finally saw my server. She asked if I was ready to order, I told her my order and specifically said I want it as spicy as I can get it. Food came out fast, but after I took my first bite I didn't taste anything spicy. I was confused on if I just underestimated the spicy levels on their menu. My waitress didn't come check on me until about 10 minutes after I got my meal... she came to check on me and I asked if this was the spiciest level and she told me no, and that she forgets sometimes to put it in when ringing it up. She went and got me some of the spicy mix on the side, and after that I could taste the spice. At this point though, my food was getting cold and I expected it to been much better had it been mixed in while cooking. As a waitress myself, I just have never seen this bad of service. I could understand if the place was packed, but while I was there the max number of tables I saw was 4. Two of them (myself included) only had one customer. Slow times are the perfect time to do things correctly and ensure customer satisfaction, but it had seemed that the waitress was too busy conversing with her coworkers to give good service. I have never contemplated leaving less than 20% before but I was genuinely considering it. I still left over 20%, because I understand how it is to be a waitress, especially when it's slow in a restaurant. I would love to come back, but if this is the service I should expect, to-go might be a better option. read more

So, another punch in the Pad Thai gut...boy, am I on a roll. Tomato! They put a form of tomato in their Pad Thai! First it was paprika at Pad Thai in Overland Park, now this. I tasted a hint of what seemed like ketchup, though it isn't, ketchup is tomato, and so forth. Once you taste it, you can't untaste it. I'll probably visit Zen Zero again, because their Pad Thai is pretty good, but I'd go as far to say that it almost is a dish entirely its own - and not traditional Pad Thai. Pad Thai needs salty, sour, and sweet: Salty from fish sauce, sour from Tamarind paste, and sweet from Palm sugar. That's it - balance it better than most, which is hard to do, and you win. Oh, and good crushed peanuts. Zen Zero recently fried my peanuts nearly to a burnt crisp, then served that to me. They remade it, but without the peanut, the dish loses something very important. It was pretty gross, and they left it wetter than normal. This visit, these guys were terribly off their game. That happens, and you can't fault 'em that much, but buddy, consistency is the father of revisits. Their free shrimp chips are great, and their taro bubble tea is just as well wonderful. I don't know. I'll probably be back, but I'll never get the tomato flavor outta my head while eating this, almost like italian/thai-fusion food for me now. Bummer. read more

This was my third time coming to Zen Zero, and every single time the food has been great. I'm slightly picky, so every time I have ordered the Pad Thai... so good. It is so much food that I've taken leftovers every time. This trip, I also tried the spring rolls which were quite good with the warm peanut like sauce it came with. I happened to come during happy hour and treated myself to a glass of wine, per our waitress' suggestion. Our waitress was very kind and informed us of her favorites as well as the specials going on. After several positive reviews from my daughter, I had high hopes for the food here. Sadly, we were both a bit disappointed tonight. It started well enough with a nice glass of Thai iced tea at a good price. My pad see ew with beef, however, failed to impress. While a huge portion, the dish appeared to have fettuccine noodles instead of the wider flat noodles you always see in this dish. Also, the amount of beef was minimal, and what was there was in chunk form, as opposed to thin, flat strips whenever I've had it before. It had a little spice, but not much overall flavor. It was basically like eating a huge bowl of fettuccine Alfredo without the addition of the creamy Alfredo sauce. My daughter always gets the pad Thai with beef. While she said it was ok, she agreed it wasn't as great as usual...a dish she raves about. I'm sure she'll go back to see if it's better next time. While I might agree to try it again, it may be awhile as this was not the best Thai ever. Rather, it was just fair, so that's the rating it received. read more
