Rainy day Asian food run! The serving sizes are not the traditional chinese take out, and perhaps the cook called out sick today? The combo fried rice offered 4 shrimp, and chewy beef. The Szechuan chicken... well it was overcooked, looked like it was repurposed from a steamed chicken dish and the broccoli was overly steamed and twice beaten. See photo for the poor plating and serving size. I didn't photograph the small soup...it is exactly that...a small teacup size portion of soup. The Szechuan sauce was not a traditional brown sauce and was a runny, thin liquid. The best part of the meal was the egg rolls. Decent size and crispy on the outside. Simply delicious! It had been about 10 years since I had been to this restaurant. At the time it was a Mongolian grill. The food then was good but not enough to draw me in again on a regular basis. At a friends suggestion, we dined here recently and it was fabulous. The grill is gone but no matter. I tasted my friends edamame which was the best I've ever had. I ordered a cup of won ton soup that was flavorful without being dramatic. For my main dish I ordered the Saucy Beef Chow Fun. This was a wide rice noodle dish with a savory sauce and delicious slices of beef and onions. The portion was so large, this served as my meal for the next 2 days. Leftovers are fabulous! The owner came out and talked to us. Her name is May and she is just delightful. She is very knowledgeable about the dishes she serves and concerned about serving high quality. She stressed to us that she could make any accommodation we needed to any dish. Our server, Wayne, was just as nice. I enjoyed meeting them both. This is a busy restaurant. Not only were a lot of people dining in but there was steady stream of take out traffic, as well. I waited for my friend in the parking lot and saw many people popping in for their take out. This is also a very large restaurant. It can accommodate large groups with ease. It is still not too large where dining intimacy is lost, though. Everything was cozy and the noise level was perfect. I didn't have to shout to talk or strain to hear. There is plenty of parking, as well. This restaurant has a large private parking lot. Easy access! Starting off with appetizers, we ordered calamari, gyoza, and takoyaki. The appetizers were hot but the takoyaki was too mushy on the inside, and the gyoza and calamari were mediocre at best. Food tasted as if it was packaged and right out of the freezer, not fresh at all. For mains we ordered salmon nigiri, tempura shrimp roll, and the eel bento box. Firstly the salmon nigiri was only one small piece of salmon for 5 dollars, and for the price you would expect the salmon to be somewhat fresh and have a decent color. The shrimp tempura was drenched in eel sauce which made the roll soggy. The bento box was not filling at all, the rice was cold and dry, the unagi was sliced thinly and the sauce was not good at all. The tempura might have been the best part of the bento box honestly. The waiter was nice, but lacked service. Food came one after one quickly. Taiwanese beef noodle's meat was tender and tasty same as curry beef. I love tofu with black mushrooms the most, if you like tofu, must try. Jelly fish dish was OK. I had not been back to this restaurant for over three years, since I was disappointed by my experience here three years ago. Based on a recommendation from a friend, I decided to give it another try. What a change! This restaurant has dramatically improved. They now have good wine choices and a separate authentic Chinese menu. They now also are able to accommodate special dietary preferences, such as sauces without chicken stock or MSG. This time we tried the Yakitori with scallops, the Thai basil shrimp, and the coral reef roll. All were good. Being an iDine location was very appealing, allowing the diner to earn miles on a variety of airlines. The staff were friendly, restaurant was clean and well decorated and the food was very good. I returned recently and was pleased to see they had online ordering. There was a $1.25~ fee, but it seemed worth it. The spicy tuna roll and salmon sashimi was very good and tasted fresh. This is possibly our favorite restaurant in Lawrence. They do have a diverse main menu, with American Chinese food, and Thai and Korean and sushi, but I've never tried any of that. The key is to ask for the Chinese menu. Nowadays they even have a translated version of the Chinese menu in English! Ask for recommendations if you need them. There are so many delicious items. I'm a vegetarian and there are good options for me, as well as a ton of meat options for others. I adore the puckered green beans, the sizzling tofu, the eggs and chives, and a garlicky green leafy vegetable that's just amazing. We usually chose two of those and share them. They also have dollar carafes of warm sake, which is fantastic. Great deal. The most amazing thing about this restaurant, for me, is that they carry gluten free soy sauce and can make all my favorite dishes safe for me to eat. I was crushed when after I got celiac disease I realized I couldn't eat here anymore... But not much later they started carrying tamari! It's so great to have delicious, authentic, gluten-free Chinese food in Lawrence. It's also a comfortable atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff. Theres a lot of seating and we rarely ever have had to wait. They also do carry-out. We will continue coming back several times a month!! read more
