I was told that Red Pepper Chinese Restaurant was moved to the current location. It terms of size, the restaurant is on the medium scale. I like the outside seating availability and the two inside dining areas. Monday night was not too busy. Some dishes were better than others. The braised beef spicy noodle soup, mapo tofu, and stir fried eggplants were good and the others were okay. Some bok choy or veggies in the soup would have been nice. Their soups only have a little bit of bean sprouts. It's a good Chinese restaurant in Lawrence, KS. It doesn't quite have the extra "wow" factor for me to yield the last star though. read more

Red Pepper is hands down my go-to Chinese restaurant in Lawrence. If you know, you know--this place is where all the Asians in town go, and for good reason! I got my go-to Yangzhou fried rice and Chong Qing chicken which were both absolutely spot on. The fried rice is perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor, and the Chong Qing chicken is crispy, spicy, and addictively good. If you like bold Sichuan flavors, it's a must-try. I also highly recommend the bok choy with garlic and the spicy beef brisket with potatoes, they're always cooked just right, and the brisket is melt-in-your-mouth tender with that perfect amount of heat. This restaurant had previously been at 821 Iowa Street in West Lawrence, but now located closer to downtown. The phone number has not changed from at its previous location. The address of the new location is somewhat confusing. The restaurant is at the corner of Indiana Street and 9th Street, but despite the address of the restaurant there is no entrance to the parking lot from Indiana Street. The entrance to the restaurant's parking lot is from 9th Street. If you approach from or turn onto Indiana Street, you will be disappointed by the lack of entrance to parking. The new location has both advantages and disadvantages relative to the prior location. Although the new location is smaller, its two dining rooms include one with a glass wall and sliding glass doors facing the parking lot. The atmosphere of that room is better than any of the rooms at the prior location. But the prior location had booths with comfortable seating, while the current location contains only wooden chairs without cushions. As at the prior location, the restaurant does not have brown rice or a liquor license, despite the fact that many of the other Asian restaurants in Lawrence have both. The menu is very similar to the one at the prior location offering many of the same preparations. At the previous location, the restaurant was closed on Tuesdays. At the new location, the restaurant is open on Tuesdays but closed on Sundays. There is a substantial difference between the two dining rooms at the new location. One has a view of the chefs preparing the food behind the counter. The other has the view out of the large glass wall. When we were there, we found the dining room with the window views to be more popular, filling up rapidly. You would need to get there early for dinner to be seated in that room. If you had been at the previous location, you know about the Sichuan preparations available at this restaurant, so I will not repeat the information I've posted previously about those preparations. read more

We came here for the first time tonight and were blown away by how good it was! The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was very nice and relaxed. We ordered a couple of our favorite dishes to try their take on them as well as one of their most popular ones off of the traditional menu. First off, the portions were huge! Definitely a great value meal at a bit over $13 for most plates. You could easily feed 2-3 people with one, so it was a bit daunting having three to try out. Secondly, the food was phenomenal! They were even kind enough to make the traditional dish we ordered slightly less spicy than normal as we weren't sure how rough a "three pepper" dish was going to be. After a long day of driving (10+ hours), Chinese delivery is just what we needed -- let someone else do the driving for us, even though the restaurant was only a few miles from our stopover for the night. Everything we ordered was pretty much what you'd expect from a run-of-mill Chinese restaurant. The steamed dumplings were fine. I did like the dipping sauce--it was tangy and a tad sweeter than what I've had from similar restaurants. It really enhanced the dumplings which otherwise skew to the bland side. Their best item that we ordered was the hot and sour soup. The balance of hot and sweet was perfect. The amount of tofu, egg threads, and vegetables was substantial. The soup and dumplings alone made for a full meal that sated my wife's appetite. I needed a tad more so I also ordered "house special" Lo Mein. The huge portion meant enough leftovers for dinner the next day after another ten hour drive. The Lo Mein proved to be a mixed bag --the sauce was under seasoned (to my taste) and the noodles were overcooked and rather pasty. The shortcomings were offset by a more than ample amount of proteins (beef, chicken, pork and shrimp), all properly stir-fried. Ordering online worked perfectly. Delivered was prompt, and communication by text from confirmation of the order to an alert that the delivery was imminent was excellent. On the positive side the service is is friendly and very fast. However the speed of service may indicate premade food. IMHO Chinese food is typically not great unless one is on the east coast perhaps. This restaurant is typical. The food needs much more effort, fresher meat and/or flavor. The kung pow chicken should be called kung pow celery. The broccoli beef was mediocre at best, however, the broccoli was good. All of the staff are amazing and so nice, from teaching my son how to use chopsticks to refilling my water every few minutes because I drink insane amounts, they do so much without being asked. The food. The portions they give for the price is amazing, I've never not used a take home box. The crab Rangoons are quite literally the best thing I have tasted in my entire life. Red Pepper is solid Asian food. Everything is great at this busy establishment. I go here with my Asian friends from the college. This is their Go-To Asian restaurant which should tell you something. This place is always packed. There seems to be a varied demographic dining here, as well. Red Pepper is a spacious restaurant and there are side rooms if you have a big group. There are also big tables with a revolving server in the middle of the table for all to enjoy the food. Great set up. There is a wide variety from which to choose. There are many dishes from either the American or the Chinese menu. I always try to eat from the Chinese menu just to get a variety. One thing I really like is the hot pot. Hot pot is so much fun with people. They also have dry pot of which I am not familiar. All the dishes I have had here are delicious. I have never had a bad meal at Red Pepper. The staff is very accommodating and nice. They always go out of their way to make my dining experience memorable. They also do not forget about you if you are in a side room. I have had this happen at other restaurants. Very nice staff. The prices are reasonable and they do not mind customizing dishes for no extra cost. Portions are great and prices are reasonable. I have loved the generals chicken and orange chicken. The noodles in place of rice I think is the way to go. Crab Rangoon is delicious and has a nice amount of filling and we always get fried egg rolls. Beyond the food is the staff. This is our second visit to Red Pepper and I am very pleased. We were greeted by the friendly staff and promptly seated. The menu has two sides, one that appeals to the American palate and one that has authentic Chinese dishes. Both visits we ordered food that was brought to our table hot and steaming and incredibly fresh. The Empress Chicken and Szechuan Beef are chock full of fresh vegetables, very obviously not frozen or from a can, and are so flavorful. The hot and sour soup strikes a perfect balance of hot and sour. The rangoons are full of cream cheese and huge, brought to the table fresh from the fryer. The General Tao's chicken was fresh, flavorful, and had the right amount of sweet and spicy. We've had trouble finding good Chinese food in Lawrence that isn't swimming in bland sauces from packets and we are so glad we found this place. We will be regulars here. Yep, I am a Fan. We must have gotten there as soon as they opened? This place is Gigantic, but it was empty which was fine with us. The menu is full of the standard dishes and some I have not heard of or had. The lamb and onions for instance turned out to be one of my picks. The server was super helpful and walked us through a few dishes that we were unfamiliar with. Our carry out orders were put together quickly and you could tell it was HOT. The Lamb with Onions was very tasty and I would get it again in a second. One of our orders lacked the egg rolls and Crab Rangoons which was kind of hard to tell because, we had a ton of food to work through. We were not staying far away and they fixed the lacking order plus some. It seems these days that every Chinese restaurant type place whether it is a buffet or not that everything is just massed produced bland ole fried crap. Red Pepper does not fall into that at all, each dish was well prepared, it was all hot and it all had something different and just better for me. Ordered a stir fry lamb dish, with a "Four happiness tray" takeout. WoW! the lamb dish was outstanding Szechuan mealing! There was enough food there to easily make 2 meals. Now this is actually my 2nd visit and my complaint is not about the food, but actually the experience I had. I arrived to order me a little meal to take home cause I didn't feel like cooking. It's take out only, so I don't know if this has to do with Covid or not, but it is a little off putting. That being said, after I placed my order, I asked if I could use the restroom because I had to go pretty bad, and although the girl was nice, she did tell me this convenient made up lie about how the plumbing in the place was messed up and that they didn't have a working restroom. What people tend to forget when they tell that lie, no state license would be issued to a business with no restroom, furthermore, legally you wouldn't be allowed to work k as an employee without a working restroom, so red pepper, cut it out. I would have more respect for you if you would just say "we don't allow anyone to use our restroom". but if you're going to lie, at least come up with one that is believable! read more

I've gotten take out twice from Red Pepper and both times have been great. I'd recommend items from the traditional Chinese section. I've ordered the twice cooked pork (my fav), Ma Po tofu (really good and not too spicy despite their warning), and the Kung-Pao chicken Sichuan style, which was still good but not my favorite. Their crab rangoons are the best I've tried in Lawrence and their egg rolls are tasty too. We just ordered delivery from the online system and it arrived in less than 25 minutes. My daughter and i were on a college visit when we ate here. The restaurant was carry out only but the very nice woman working came out to help us. There is an American menu of familiar items and sn Authentic Sichuan. We ordered teriyaki chicken and 4 happiness appetizer. Then we wanted a more authentic dish. The woman recommended the Chong Qing Spicy Chicken that came with their specialty cold noodles. OMG all of this food was outstanding! Teriyaki was unlike anyplace we have been! We had Asian meals in Seattle and this was as awesone. I know if my daughter comes to KU we will be eating here a lot!
