(This is true of most Lawrence music venues). Cactus Blossom was 5 brothers from Minneapolis melding family voices like the syrupy blend of Everly Brothers harmonies; Justin Payne was originally a classical violinist who jettisoned to Nashville, got a waterfall of all other music influences, and traveled the road for over twenty years honing his skills at music and reading crowds. Look at the wall of promotional 8x10 glossies of the bands that have played here and you'll get the picture. Lots of acts you want to see today were at the Bottleneck when they were building their cred - and you may be able to say, "I saw them @thebottleneck BAE." Oh, btw - The Bottleneck is small enough that you can generally interact with the performers - and the shows get better with the energy of the audience. It's big enough to take a group of friends and small enough that the audience makes an impressive impact. (Ever notice how people respond to praise and encouragement?) Often, the musicians stick around to autograph their merch, discuss where to eat and drink, and enjoy midwestern hospitality along their grueling path to play for nameless faces in faraway places. They've updated the sound and lighting systems. They've also done some work around the stage, repainted and cleaned the interior and semi fixed up the restrooms. This is a fun little venue. Huge shoutout to the staff for letting me sub the smaller patty onto a different burger--super accommodating! The Sides: Crinkle-cut fries were solid, though they could've used an extra 30 seconds in the fryer for that elite crunch. The "Local Flavor" (The Drama) The only downside? The "day-drinking regulars." One guy was stumbling so hard he tripped over an elderly couple's walker and sent their drinks flying. I've given this place a couple of shots -- I've visited with close friends, I've visited with schoolmates, and I've hated it each time. There's something about the whole vibe of this place that rubs me wrong. Many people in a college town will complain about a place being full of "Frat Guys" I take umbrage at that as I was in a fraternity in my undergraduate years at a mid-sized midwestern land grant university, so I've actually met a lot of fraternity men. I like to believe that what most people mean by "Frat Guys" is entitled self-important assholes -- if that's what "Frat Guys" means, then It's Brothers has them in spades. I'm not averse to crowds, but somehow this hole has drawn enough of a crowd every time I have visited that it is difficult to move from seat or a standing space by the bar to the restrooms. And maybe it's because I'm not a pretty person, or maybe it's because I was 27 instead of the mean crowd age of 21.025, but I have literally stood stood at the bar attempting to flag down a bartender for twenty minutes to try to get a beer while people to the left and right of me got service. I'm an easygoing person, and I've lived in Lawrence for over ten years, and I will visit nearly any bar in this town to have a drink, but It's Brothers is off my list.

All stories which usually end badly (police involvement, terrible hangovers, fights, that one terrible one night stand... you get the picture). The bar has several rooms and as the night goes on and the rooms fill up, more rooms open. Absolutely nothing special about the drinks. This place is not for enjoying the drinks or nice ambiance. This place is about getting as many kids as drunk as possible as fast as possible. If that's what you're looking for then this is the place for you. There are much nicer bars just around the corner. If you have put in enough effort to read this entire review, you should go to any other bar just around the corner.
