Hear me out... this tiny drive thru only hit of a restaurant has some really bad food! They gave the best Crab Rangoon in town. Their egg rolls are yummy, too. This place must serve a significant amount of customers because they have been around for a long time. It's difficult to judge because it's drive thru only. You don't have to worry about parking or crowds here. Everything is easily accessible. They have a wide variety of dishes on their menu. Everything I've tried has been very good. The service is good but non personal. The same man has waited on me every time I've been there. The restaurant is so small it would be challenging to get many employees working. The food was terrible. I got an order of crab rangoon to try and I couldn't finish them. I don't know how they are being made but the bottoms seemed raw, very pale compared to the rest of the wrapper and the wonton had a strange consistency. I ate a second thinking that maybe I had just gotten an off one but it was also bad. Then I started to get sick. Definitely comparable to other options here in town- only difference from other spots in town is an amazingly friendly staff and a quick drive thru experience! We got hotel delivery last night while in town for KU move out. My daughter loves this place and gets it often throughout the school year, so we gave it a try. Online ordering through yelp was easy. Food is really cheap. We got a lot for $30. Orange chicken, sesame chicken, egg rolls, dumplings, rangoons, and drinks. Delivery was super fast...showed up well before the initial delivery estimate. I keep asking myself why I keep going back to TryYaki, but I keep doing it! i can't say no! Their food is not authentic, but it's fast, you get a lot of it and the price is right. I usually have leftovers or share my dinner, and all for only about 6 bucks. My favorite thing on the menu is the crab rangoon - they are crispy and have good flavor. I'm not a fan of the spicy tuna roll - it was a bit fishy tasting (in the wrong way). The California roll is fair, though. When I got the beef and broccoli dish, I did appreciate the amount of broccoli, and the fact that it still had a bit of crisp to it. The sesame noodles are a more flavorful and higher quality side than the fried rice in my opinion. Give it a try! read more

This place gets two stars because the delivery was fast and the food isn't abysmal. The teriyaki shrimp I ordered seemed to be more onions than shrimp. The rolls I ordered with it are bland. Mostly, this is a negative review because of the way the food was packaged. The teriyaki was in a styrofoam container placed in a plastic bag. The sauce leaked all over the bag and got all over the other things inside. The combo I ordered came with a soda. The sofa was placed in a paper cup, which was oddly delivered in a paper bag. The bag was soaked through with condensation from the cold soda, and it broke when I was carrying it. Almost all the soda spilled out of the cup and onto my floor, almost damaging some electronics. Why would you place a cold cup of soda in a paper bag? How does that make any sense? Why didn't the delivery driver (I ordered from Door Dash so I realize this isn't the restaurant's fault) warn me to be careful? This is my first time ordering from Tryyaki, and the bland food and poor delivery packaging make me not want to order from them ever again. read more

The biggest problem I have with this restaurant is that the owners do not appear to care about the planet. It appears they are in love with Styrofoam. All meals are in Styrofoam boxes and each Styrofoam box comes with a Styrofoam bowl fill with a salad made up of nearly 100% head lettuce. It would be less expensive and better if they used paper packaging. Paper can be recycled and even if not, it decomposes in a few years. Styrofoam cannot be recycled. It never decomposes but rather sheds tiny micro particles of plastic for thousands of years and those tiny particles will always be with us on our planet. It looks like most meals are lots of meat and rice with virtually no vegetables. The beverages are supplied by Pepsi so are loaded with Round Up weed killer. I like Chinese food because of all the vegetables. A handful of head lettuce in a Styrofoam bowl is not enough vegetables for me. read more

Well, at least it's cheap. I was hungry. I know, it happens. I figured I'd get something to eat. I hadn't been to TryYaki in ages upon ages, I was in the mood for something Asianish, and I happened to be nearby, so I ordered some food. Apparently, that was a mistake. Not remembering what the quality of food was like, I decided for something I didn't think could be screwed up that badly: honey chicken. If I had prima facie faith that TryYaki was a decently good place (thankfully, I had not read any reviews of the place on here), I might have sprung for the sushi. The honey chicken combo meal consisted of five parts: a salad, fried rice, the chicken with honey sauce, a crab rangoon, and steamed vegetables (along with a soda, but that's beside the point). All (except the crab rangoon) were, and I'm going to put this charitably, seriously underwhelming. The salad looked (and tasted, imagine that) like it was prepared several days ago. The lettuce lacked any sort of crunchiness, as it sure seemed that it was sitting in the rather blandish ranch dressing for an extended period of time. There wasn't much else beside lettuce and dressing in the salad. The crab rangoon was standard crab rangoon fare. No complaints on it. The fried rice lacked much taste, although there was certainly a lot of it. The chicken itself was dry, and a bit too tough. The sauce lacked much taste (I figured it'd at least taste like honey). I didn't even attempt the steamed vegetables. The good news is that I got a lot of food. That bad news was ... well, when I get a lot of food, I appreciate tasting it. I discovered Tryyaki as a junior at KU. There is only one thing worth getting there - Number 11 with a Mountain Dew. You get a ton of delicious MSG-loaded chicken, rice, and sauce, a mountain dew, a salad, and a crab rangoon. The crab rangoon sucks and the salad is peeled off the bottom of their dumpster, so frankly the healthiest decision you'll make is to throw the salad out and go straight to the chicken and rice. Something you also need to understand is that Tryyaki cycles employees by season, using an A-Team during the school year and the benchwarmers in the summer, so definitely try to eat there during the school year. I mean real talk I've eaten there like 60 times and since I estimate each time knocks half a day off my lifespan, I'm down like a month. Worth it. Sometimes I used to get water instead of a soda in the hopes that I could limit the damage, but I knew I was betraying what I learned as a loyal customer. These other reviewers think Tryyaki is their ally, but they merely adopted the Tryyaki. Fast food drive, through Chinese food! The teriyaki chicken was very flavorful. The sauce was really runny and not thick as I have found at other Chinese restaurants. I loved that. I moved all my white rice to slather up the runny goodness. The teriyaki chicken meal included rice a salad and Cali rolls and a soda for $5.80. That's a good deal. My wife love the Cali rolls. I don't like that stuff. She loved them! The Crab Rangoon was not sweet enough. The lo-mien had a peanut taste to it. I didn't care for it. My wife liked it. Reminded me of ramen noodles. We do not live in Lawrence, but were hungry and wanted food fast and we really enjoyed the place. We ate in the car in the parking lot. As it's a drive through. However I did see their other location is sit down. Unconfirmed though. Compared to Panda Express a similar concept this was heaven. Cooked fresh when we ordered it. Needing some food delivered to my apartment because I was lazy and very hungry, I decided to give TryYaki a whirl. Their sushi is really cheap (along with everything else) so I tried some of that out. So I got the general's chicken along with California and Philadelphia rolls. The chicken tasted like every other Chinese place in Kansas, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It was still hot and had a nice and crunchy exterior when it arrived, so that was pleasing. The sushi was mediocre...I guess. 8 pieces for 3 bucks though, so it was worth the money. With enough soy sauce and wasabi, the sushi does an alright job. A couple weeks later I ordered the fried dumplings. I would order them again. Hot sauce is included. The beef and broccoli is terrible. Huge chunks of carrots that weren't cooked enough, lots of broccoli, and some sort of nasty cut of beef. It's no good I say! Egg rolls are good. Rice is good. Try it out. read more

I think the appeal of Tryyaki may be better found if you're a little drunk. I don't think I'd had enough to truly appreciate the greasy goodness. (and how much goodness was really there!) The serving size was large-enough for two of us to share after a late, but not too crazy, night out. I also loved the drive thru! Hooray for drive-thru Asian cuisine. Before you judge me and say that I got fried rice, of course it will be greasy, this was more than normal dishes I've had at places around Lawrence with similar pricing. The food is pretty fantastic, and the speed of delivery is also very fast. They always open until 11:30 pm every day except Thanksgiving day. This was a solid 3 stars for me. I'd never tried it and my friend and I wanted some cheap Chinese food and decided to give TryYaki a shot. I ordered the Shrimp Teriyaki and my friend ordered the General Chicken. I wouldn't have described the amount of food as huge as some of these yelp reviews would have implied. Especially mine, which was mostly onions, though shrimp IS more expensive than chicken. (Maybe I'm just spoiled by having gone to college in Baltimore where you could get a week's worth of Chinese food for $20.) The sauce was pretty good. The rice was as to be expected. The sushi (California roll) was nothing to write home about, but it wasn't bad. I'm glad it was not a raw roll. I'm not sure if they have raw rolls, but I don't know if I would trust that from them. The crab rangoon (swapped out for a salad) was the best part! We had delivery and it came pretty fast. No complaints there. I probably won't seek out TryYaki again, but if I'm in a situation to eat there I won't complain. read more

TryYaki is and will always be ubber popular amongst younger college students. Why you may ask........Because they freaking give you enough gut wrenching (in a bad way) Chinese food to feed 2-3 KU Football Players. The prices are super low and you receive a boat load of food. Therefore, something isn't adding up here. Then again, you get what you pay for. The food is somewhat weird. The first few bites are delicious. Then it gradually goes down hill from there. Maybe it's a mental thing. When you open the container and see all the food provided your adrenaline spikes and you think , "Yea, I got over on this one". Well, just wait. You will likely regret it soon enough. I swear the food all starts to taste the same. Regardless of dish, whether you get veggie or meat included; everything starts to taste meaty/fishy. Very weird because I'm not even sure if TryYaki sells fish dishes outside shrimp. Related to this issue I hereby provide a stern warning to all; DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT reheat leftovers up in the microwaves. You will get an awful flavor of rotting meat in your palate. I swear I'm not exaggerating and have heard from others the same thing. Anyhow, the crab rangoon and egg rolls aren't too bad. I've eaten here 4-6 times and have finally decided to stop. The prices are super low and I totally forgot to mention that all dishes include a FREE soda. But, you better mention the free drink because TryYaki sure won't.
