I used to love coming to Ramen Bowls and had great experiences for years, but my recent visits have been consistently disappointing--especially the most recent one. We were told there would be a 30-minute wait for a table of four, so two of us sat at the bar and ordered an appetizer since there was no room in the designated waiting area. When our other two friends arrived, they waited standing until two bar seats opened next to us, at which point they sat down. When the bartender came over, we explained again that we were just waiting for our table. They responded, "Oh, so you're just taking our bar seats," in a very rude tone. We were sitting simply to avoid standing, especially since the restaurant had no space to accommodate the number of people it asked to wait, despite several tables sitting open for "reservations." The comment felt especially inappropriate given that we had already ordered food. After that, we waited another 20 minutes (45 total) to be seated--and only after I reminded the host--at a table that had already been cleaned and open for several minutes. It then took nearly an hour for our food to arrive. While delays happen, the buildup of poor service made it hard to overlook. It's clear that management has declined in recent years, and customers are treated as expendable. I used to overlook the overpriced portions because of the food quality, but being taken for granted as a customer makes that impossible now. read more

I would like to acknowledge that this is my first review and my experience was a unique one leading to the 1 star review which I would assume that this was an unusual night for all parties involved. However, I can only speak from my experience as this was our first time. The food took forever due to the kitchen being behind with our appetizer coming out 1 hour after ordering and our food still hadn't make it to our table after a total of ~1hr and 45min with no updates or check-ins from our server which could've helped the situation a little. When we did hear a couple ask about how much longer for their order the waitress simply said "no" and that it was coming. After the over an hour and half wait the fire alarm then sounded and the restaurant was evacuated, which was at no fault to the restaurant and the staff handled the situation well. They offered a gift card but at no explicit value if you wanted to leave and others were able to leave without paying the bill that they had already eaten a full meal on. However since we had had already waited almost two hours at this point, we decided to stick it out a little longer in hopes of trying the food we were excited for and already put so much time into regardless of the unexpected alarm. The food did come out fast since the restaurant was pretty empty at this point but when it came to the bill there was nothing done to compensate for either the poor food efficiency or inconveniences which I feel is a practice that needs worked on in the future, which is the reason I felt like a review was necessary. However, we understood that these are people at the end of the day and tried to be as nice as possible and just pay the bill we were already planning on paying. I would like to note that the food was good once we got it and the staff was nice enough when we interacted with them. We hope your experience is better than ours and if you have a similar experience managers are proactive to let servers know they can compensate patrons for their respective inconveniences. read more

I subbed out shallots for an egg but they only gave me half an egg. When I asked they said that's standard. It's an extra $3.50 for an egg added on and you don't even get the full egg? Feels like false advertising imo. When I told our waiter I felt that way they agreed and snagged me the other half of the egg saying that they've brought that up too but the people running it don't see it that way. If you ever had a good ramen experience, please do not eat here. This place is not authentic and it is clear from the food preparation that they don't care about the craft of Japanese cuisine. This is the full account of my $30 lunch which was a side of eggrolls and the goddess ramen bowl. I came into this establishment during lunch. It was halfway full. This place is literally decorated like an otaku's wet dream. It is what people believe Japan is without knowing what Japan is. I went to the bar for fast service. The maitre'd gave me the "menu." The menu was literally a magazine that was hard to decipher what items they actually sold. I flipped through this menu/magazine trying to figure out what to order and ultimately just decided to ask the waiter for his recommendation. I asked the waiter do they have crab rangoon or cheese wantons? The waiter responded "No, we have crab rangoon nachos though." I think to myself, "Oh no, what did I get myself into," but foolishly, I decided to give this place a chance. I asked if they had eggrolls and what type of vegetarian ramen would they recommend. The waiter stated that they had vegetarian eggrolls and recommended the goddess ramen bowl. I followed the waiter's recommendation. I waited ten minutes and was presented with my $8.00 eggrolls. I looked at the waiter. The waiter looked at me. I looked back at him and asked, "are these my $8.00 eggrolls?" He responded yes. Presented in front of me was two eggrolls that were as long as my pinky. I took a bite and sadly, the taste was mediocre. On top of that, the eggrolls were fried in oil that was too hot, as the outside was a dark brown, yet the wrapper was only halfway cooked. I could only imagine that they justify the high price because the eggrolls were "hand rolled" (very poorly may I add). However, there are other Asian restaurants that serve hand rolled eggrolls for half the price and double the quantity (look up Spices in Kansas City). Not only that, these egg rolls lacked flavor, because the filling was so small compared with the thickness of the wrapper. However, nothing prepared me for the Goddess Bowl. The waiter kept on telling me that my food was going to be out any time now. I waited over thirty minutes. When I was given the Goddess Bowl, I was shocked and disappointed. The Goddess bowl consisted of very thinly cut ramen, with a bland vegetarian broth topped with raw spinach, raw avocado, and fried to hell tofu. I added an egg for $3.50 (Yes, I winced when I did so), which was overcooked. This dish is an abomination to Japanese cuisine. The spinach was literally straight from the bag. No seasoning, no nothing. It was the same for the avocado. It is kind of like, are you even trying? If you know anything about Japanese cuisine, they would never serve raw spinach on anything. Spinach is usually cooked, drained, wrung of water, seasoned with sesame seed oil, salt/soy sauce and white pepper, but I digress. The tofu was a sin for people who actually like tofu. It was fried to the point that it had rubbery texture and was unable to soak up any of the broth. It is clear that the people who prepared this tofu fried up the tofu well in advanced, possibly days in advance. The ramen noodles were also too thin and the vegetable broth was bland. If I wanted to eat angel haired pasta, I would have gone to an Italian restaurant. Additionally, I would bet that the vegetarian broth is made from powder and not actually made in the restaurant, but I would feel like I would be cheating if I did. Anyways, the total for an order of eggrolls and a vegetarian ramen bowl was $30.00. Even more expensive than going to 715 or Merchants. Please, do not go here. Support restaurants that actually care about the cuisine they are making, like Lucky Seb's. This is your warning. read more

Finally was able to check this spot out after several high recommendations and was not disappointed. I got the tonkotsu ramen. The broth was rich and flavorful and the noodles had great texture. For someone who doesn't really like ramen, I LOVED this place! Now that's saying something. I typically enjoy Japanese cuisine, and once I found out that Ramen Bowls has a Hawaiian twist, I was sold. When we walked in, there was a guy at the front making housemade ramen noodles in a glass room which was fascinating to watch. I got an order of gyoza and the kimchi ramen with pork belly, a soft boiled egg, greens, and garlic. The pork belly and soft boiled wgg were cooked perfectly, the greens added great flavor, and the spice and sauce combo was perfection. The gyoza fried was crispy and the dipping sauce was divine. I also got a Hawaiian Sun drink, which was the cherry on top of a fantastic meal. If I could rate my meal more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. I need to come back and try more things on their menu. Service was great. You order at the front counter and then take a number to your seat where they deliver the food. The one confusing part was what to do with the plates after the meal...leave 'em at the table or clear 'em? I couldn't tell.
