I ordered the General Tso's chicken. I thought my portion was on par with other restaurants like this, and I had plenty of leftovers to make another meal out of it. I thought the sauce on the chicken was good, but not as spicy as I'd like. The fried rice that came with it was good as well. Mostly because it was super tasty but also because they served large portions at a cheap price. Yummy & affordable, a broke college students dream. While visiting Lawrence this weekend, we decided to be lazy on Sunday night & order chinese. I was super excited to see that China House was still operating. This is the best Chinese-American takeout in the kc area! The value is fantastic, the portions are generous, and the food is always ready quickly. My husband has loved this place since he was young, and he introduced me to it. My go-to order is the chicken and broccoli, while his is the general tso's chicken. I like that they make the chicken and broccoli with brown sauce, instead of the white sauce that some other places make. Every lunch combo comes with a side of fried rice, as well as an egg roll or two crab rangoons. At $8, you can't beat the price! We were on our way home from a Colorado getaway and decided to stop in Lawrence, KS to pick up some Chinese food to go- China House did not disappoint. I really wish we had a Chinese takeout like this place where we live because I would probably go there every week or every other day. It was THAT good. I was very impressed with how authentic the takeout food tasted and just how fresh it was. We ordered bbq boneless ribs which had a really good taste but was just slightly salty for my liking but still really good, general tso chicken which was probably one of the best I've ever had, orange chicken which was good, and egg rolls which tasted handmade due to the bamboo veggies and how fresh it tasted. Their fried rice was also authentic and not that yellow, fake stuff that some Chinese places offer. Whenever we take more road trips west, I will definitely be back to China House for more takeout! Some of the best Chinese food we have had anywhere in the country. Location is nothing to look at, but we don't go to a restaurant for a "look". Food quality is impeccable! Service is a bit slow, but I think that is due to the language barrier - they speak little English which makes it all the more enjoyable & authentic. Everything is made to order!! It has six booths..... Reminded me of a diner type place ......it was get your own plates get your own forks get your own napkins etc. all of supplies were piled in a corner and in one of the booths. OK do the math. College town + Tons of students = Tons of fast food places. If I recall, Lawrence used to be in the Guiness Book for the most fast food places per capita, but I digress. So my point??? China House is the best fast food place for Americanized Chinese food I have found in Lawrence or Kansas City. They make everything fresh, and it tastes that way. Most places in town cater to the student masses that want quantity and not quality, so I was happy to find this place. It was nice to finally sample dishes that actually taste different from one another when you try something new, unlike some of the other Chinese restaurants in Lawrence. I have been eating at this place a lot lately. In the past I would go to Jade Garden for my "go to" Chinese takeout but I think I like this place better for some things. The lunch special is very reasonably priced and has lots of options. We have tried 5 or 6 things on the menu and they have all been great. I love the soup and the egg rolls which is a great plus. My favorite Chinese food ever!! Food I always order: wonton soup, pork fried rice, and crab rangoons. I usually choose between the orange chicken, shrimp in garlic sauce, or the general tso. It's difficult though because everything is so good. Portion size is huge. I always have leftovers which is great because the food is just as delicious the next day too. Their process for taking orders is rife with errors, and their promised time for pick up has now failed repeatedly. When I asked to speak to a manager a young girl came to the register and actually yelled at me and told me to go to another restaurant after I calmly questioned the delay. Great advice, manager. Let's keep this review short: this is the best takeout Chinese food in Lawrence. Sure, it's not Chinatown in NYC/Phila/SF good. I doubt that's possible anywhere nearby. But for the price, you get a metric truckload of food, and it's good quality. I've eaten a lot of the chow mei fun, and it's always terribly tasty. The crab rangoon are by far the best in Lawrence (I believe they use real crab, and the cream cheese is just a bit sweet, which allows for a unique and tasty flavor). I'd probably go here more if it weren't on the other side of town. If you're nearby, give it a go. read more

We couldn't wait to try this place after reading the reviews. I wish we would of left it at just reading because our food experience was not that great. We ordered a bunch of the crab rangoons. They had good flavor when they didn't drip in grease. The grease killed it for us. The shrimp fried rice was very cheaply made and nothing special. My girlfriend did not enjoy the sesame chicken. She said it didn't taste like chicken. The egg drop soup on the other hand was amazing. Great flavor. I would almost go back just for it. Well probably not because we drove 25 min to go there.
