Seems like a great crew. bar: I drank a Lawrence Beer Company Lectric IPA and my wife had a pomegranate house soda ($6 each as of 09/2025). This is a more-than-complete craft cocktail bar. food: Thai-influenced offerings but with wide-ranging menu offering something for everyone. I LOVE THIS PLACE ALWAYS @bonbonlawrence is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants of all time. They hit every single time always stellar! Just look at these beauties. The only negative (which tbh both were incredible) was that Jonathan and I both ordered the same seared tuna, but both had very different cooks. His was super rare (which was so yummy) and mine was pretty medium but still really yummy. The homemade noodles were the BEST. I'd love to see more homemade noodles from them in the future for sure. Came here on a home football game night and were seated right away. Our party of four ordered two things each and shared it all. We got the schnitzel, carrot salad, the salad, popcorn chicken, beef noodles, queso and chips and a savory pancake. Everything was delicious and service was quite fast. Ambiance is wonderful, trendy, hipster. Food is fantastic! Service was quick and friendly even on graduation/ Mother's Day weekend. We had a party of six and started with the fish and dip and a okonomiyaki. Both were wonderful tater tots were nice and crisp with the dip. Sometimes the combination seems strange but they work so well together. Everything was absolutely delicious and unique. It is on the pricey side and you have to be careful about adding protein to your dishes as it increases the overall price dramatically - anywhere from $8-$9 per dish additional. Popcorn chicken that is the best we have ever tasted - light and crisp not oily, tuna cooked perfectly and the steak dish was scrumptious and cooked to order. The restaurant has a really cool, hip and trendy vibe. Suitable for dates and small gatherings, however, it can be quite difficult to chat/hear through all the noise as it gets quite loud in there. We ordered the Niçoise salad, yellowfin tuna and duck leg - the foods decent, though the tuna was a bit dry. Overall, slightly pricey, as they have a 7% sustainability fee automatically added to the bill (tips not included). The valentines menu was $55/person for 3 items, and our waiter informed us that it can also be a la carte. Would suggest restaurant to put individual dish $ on the menu if a la carte was an option for others who might not want all 3 items (apps, entree, dessert). read more

HIDDEN GEM!!! not one to ever leave reviews .. but this is necessary Just when I feel like I've been to all the best spots in Lawrence, I stumbled upon Bon Bon and couldn't have one bad thing to say about it. We made a reservation on a Friday and even though when we got there we had to wait for our table ... the time just flew by. The bartenders were great, ambiance was amazing, even the host apologized for our wait time more than once, which really goes a long way. This spot is a must !!!! loved the indoor seating and the outdoor area has sooo much space when it's warmer. In my first review, I complained that there was no table service, a crowded dining room, and no happy hour discounts on wines. That has now all changed. The restaurant is larger, there is table service, and there are happy hour discounts on the house wines and on the small plates. In fact all of the small plates are half price between 3 pm and 6 pm. But there are still no cushions on the seats, and unfortunately the chef will not permit substitutions on any of the preparations. If you like comfort food and do not object to the chef's choice of sides with the entrees, you likely will be very happy here. But my preferences are not identical to the chef's preferences, so without the ability to make any substitutions, I will continue to prefer some of the other restaurants in Lawrence. If the plate comes with fried rice, you must have fried rice. If it comes with grits, you must have grits, if it comes with collard greens, you must have collar greens, .... In short, despite the substantial improvements in this restaurant, it still does not "float my boat." read more

I did not realize they change their menu often; therefore, I couldn't get what I wanted. However, the food came out fast; the server was very personable. So my boyfriend and I were lucky enough to be invited to the soft opening of their new menu that came with their new kitchen and renovations. We ordered the wings, the chicken liver pâté, duck confit dandan noodles, and the chinese bbq spare ribs. We were given an order of okonomiyaki due to some kitchen error. I think the kitchen made it by mistake. We ordered two cocktails as well. My boyfriend had the Jolene and I had the Chancellor. Things that made an impression on me: excellent staff, atmosphere, customer interaction, cocktails, and unique food combinations. The staff here are all very polite, knowledgable, friendly, skilled, and really contribute to the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. I'm always impressed by the creativity of both their drinks menu and food menu as well. Wings- 4.5 out of 5. There is the slightest hint of spice present on the wings and a wonderful umami due to the fish sauce present in the sauce. It was perfectly crispy, slightly sweet, but mostly savory. Overall, very good but also just a tad bit too salty. Would order again. Okonomiyaki- 3 out of 5. This was probably my least favorite out of everything we got. It was a good size when it came out, which is great! I love big portions! What really threw me off was the sauce. The sauce was really tangy and I think there was too much of it which really overpowered the dish and drowned out the other ingredients and flavors. However, I did enjoy the crunchy tempura clusters sprinkled on top and the amount of bonito that was on the pancake. The occasional pork belly piece was also very good. Overall, I like that all the elements of a traditional okonomiyaki are present in this dish but I wish the proportions for each ingredient were a little different. I don't think I would order this again simply because the other dishes on the menu outshine it and I would rather get something else. Chicken Liver Pâté- 5 out of 5. I am a sucker for pâté so when I saw this on the menu, I knew we had to get it. The pâté was incredibly smooth and flavor packed. What really completed this dish was this wonderful slightly sweet sauce on top of the pâté. It complemented the richness of the pâté beautifully. I also really enjoyed the smokiness from the toasted bread and that they used olive oil to toast it. I do wish there was more bread that came with this dish and that the bread was a little bit more toasted, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Would order again. Duck Confit Dandan Noodles- 3.5 out of 5. This dish is incredibly rich. There is a strong ginger flavor present which I am not a fan of. Personally, I find ginger to be a very overpowering ingredient and I don't like a lot of it in my dishes. The noodles were a good thickness and I like that they were slightly chewy. I like the addition of the soft boiled egg because it made the dish more creamy. The dish overall was a little salty, but I think it was on purpose due to the duck quarter you got along with the noodles which was more bland. The duck was slightly dry, but had a very nice crunch on it. Overall, it was enjoyable, but I probably wouldn't order it again due to the ginger. Chinese BBQ Ribs- 5 out of 5. These were probably my favorite dish of the night. The ribs fell off the bone effortlessly but were still firm enough to retain their shape. The miso really shines and adds depth to the dish. I liked that theres a smoky taste present on the ribs. You can tell there was an open fire involved. The ribs are slightly salty from the miso, but I like it. Overall, very good. Would definitely order again. Cocktails- Both cocktails were very good. The Jolene tasted kind of like a sangria, but less fruity. The Chancellor has quickly become one of my favorite cocktails. The staff described it to me as kind of tasting like a creamsicle, but without the cream. It was very enjoyable, refreshing, and the orange flavor was balanced nicely with the smooth vanilla and small hints of spices. Will have to come back to drink some more. read more

Very cool space and fun menu. We had the cheesy tots and cheese dip for our apps, both are great next time we will order 2 cheesy tots! Had the Beef Noodles, Fried Rice and Shrimp and a cheese filled pancake dish, I cant recall the name. Everything we tried was great and would order again. The menu has some Asian influence but not all, we just happened to order entrees that where. They have Fish n Chips, Chicken Schnitzel and other items not Asian influenced. From the bar we had a Negroni and Old Fashioned's and they were crafted exceptionally well. Our server was attentive and very sweet, can't wait to go back as the Lawrence restaurant scene has become stale and boring, we needed this! read more

Bon Bon was a true delight! The ambiance is perfectly hip. Not over the top but just hip enough to be trendy without trying too hard. The drinks I had were both inventive and tasty, definitely a place to come and sample cocktails. I was especially impressed with the carrot appetizer our table ordered. I'm not sure I've ever had a tastier carrot. This would be a 5 Star review if not for the fact that we were seated uncomfortably close the table next to us. The service was wonderful, it also could have been because it wasnt too busy but the waitress did a great job. The food was yummy and i felt at least "decently healthy" after eating there. The waitress helped give good suggestions and i was really happy with what i ate. The prices really werent too bad the only complaint was that I wasnt filled up a ton after I was done eating. I probably could have eaten another food item or just wish there could have been more, but it wasnt that the food was bad by any means just that i wish it could have been more filling. The whole aesthetic was fun and I sat in their "sun room" area which was really pretty because its like your sitting outside but able to stay warm hahaha. My wife took me to Bon Bon as a surprise birthday date. As I approached the building I appreciated that the kitchen was a well designed food truck. The architecture and feel of the restaurant was very modern and fun much like their branding. The sole reason that my rating is so low is because of a few important things. It's not a traditional restaurant when it comes to service and that is what I felt lacked the most. You order at a counter and then sit at a table. Servers will bring you your food and supposedly from then on out it's full service from the table. The people were upbeat and friendly but didn't really serve us, they just dropped the food off without silverware, napkins, plates, or waters. This turned out to be very painful for me. My wife ordered Takoyaki, KFC Bunz, Thai bowl, Seasonal Shrub with Soda, and hot tea for us to share. The Takoyaki is an unfamiliar dish to me, so maybe I should have been patient. But the dish was unassuming and I did not expect it would be so hot that it would burn the roof of my mouth to the point that it was bleeding. This situation could have been totally avoided if we were cautioned when the food was delivered. Or, if I would have had a napkin to discretely discard the hot food in. Or water to cool my mouth down after it burned. Overall I think this could be a wonderful restaurant, but this experience totally ruined it for us. I hope to come back in a few months and report a more positive review, but don't expect this visit will happen any time soon. Disappointing and for such a great little place. Part of the rapidly growing East Lawrence entertainment district, Bon Bon is a real breath of fresh air for this side of town. Part food truck, part night life/bar and restaurant (and soon to be lunch and morning coffee hangout) has been created out of a much in need of attention stone building. The remodel makes it fit beautifully. Lots of outdoor seating, picnic tables, the kitchen an actual food truck, yet a gorgeous restaurant seating area with exposed original stone walls clear the the ceiling, modern lighting, expansive bar and menu. Impressive. The new owners live in the neighborhood and are well know around town for their creative work. The menu is made up of small bites, sides and a few entrees for now. Some of the fare you'll be dining on is grown right across the street in the Bon Bon greenhouse and garden. Categorize? Doubt you'll be able to. The menu will vary they say and flow with what's in season in part. My first visit was a quick stop for a drink and a snack, and what a pleasurable experience. First, no evidence of growing pains. Plenty of folks recognized in Lawrence as service professionals working their craft. Friendly, no deer in the headlights you get with many openings around town (hello, Port Fonda). Japanese octopus fritters, kewpie mayo, tako sauce, bonito, pickled ginger were sublime. Paired it with a Ballast Point Kolsch on tap, which I attempted to locate (to no avail) earlier in the day since hearing about it. Also on the menu, things like KFC (Korean Friend Chicken), Thai wings, chicken rillettes with caraway peach preserves. Four dining categories: Snacks, Bunz, Plates & Bowls. Looking forward to trying out some of their locally grown salads. Open just in the evenings at the moment but working towards lunch then early morning for coffee and (believe light breakfast) accompaniments. So happy to see this area revitalized by neighbors, and so happy to see a place close enough to walk to get some of the very best the city has to offer. read more

My husband and I first tried eating at Bon Bon on 11/05/16; their site reads they are open Monday-Saturday, 7 am-close. I guess "close" is meant to be open-ended. So, across town, we drove. Very cute building and I love that they have a garden across the street. But when we got to the door around eleven am, there was a small sign saying they weren't opening that day until 5pm. There was nothing on Twitter, Facebook, etc., about this, and we were disappointed and a bit irritated. We tried again on Tuesday for lunch before going to run our errands (including voting, but I don't want to talk about that). We were immediately seated, though we were pretty much the only patrons there. The inside of the building is gorgeous...so much beautiful dark wood. We ordered a few things so we could taste some of this, some of that. the Frenchie: a salad of mixed greens, bacon, chopped eggs, crispy lentils, blue cheese, shallots, croutons, and a verjus vinaigrette. I found the bacon to be some of the best I've ever had and I dug the crispy lentils, but I just assumed (I know) the shallots wouldn't be raw, so there was way too much oniony stuff going on for either of us, and we both agreed there were far too much croutons, though tasty, and not enough lettuce. I'll order this again, with adjustments. takoyaki: six octopus fritters, with mayonnaise, takoyashi, pickled ginger, etc. I really liked the way they were covered in bonito flakes and how it looked like the bonito was dancing, but the first ball was way too hot (hey, I can't be tamed). The octopus piece in each was very tiny and a little overcooked. My husband only ate one, so we didn't finish them. I'll give them another try. hot chicken wrap: traditional wrap ingredients, ordered solely for my husband. I tasted the chicken and neither of us felt it was the least bit spicy. My first grader would eat it without batting an eye. If my husband orders it again, he'll undoubtedly ask for a much spicier bird. wings: Thai chicken wings. The star of the show. These were quickly devoured, and though I'd like them to be spicier, I'm going to try to recreate them tonight. The staff is extremely friendly. It seems like everything is cooked in their black food truck, Tom Tom, and my husband wondered about how that would work in winter, but I don't think it would be too bad to be in a warm truck! Their online menu hasn't changed, so maybe these are the dishes they're perfecting now. All in all, I really hope this place succeeds through the growing pains, and I'll be back. read more

This one is tough to review. One hand it was great yet there was just something off about it and not sure why. It is basically a food truck that turned into a restaurant. The food truck is still parked there and is where the food is cooked. There is only so much you can do in a small food truck kitchen. The food was OK and nothing wrong with it. I love the location and the outside seating. The tater-tot appetizer with Alma cheese was good but it was still just tater-tots. The best was the Thai wings, very yummy. I have been excited to try this place since it opened, because the food sounded unique, fun, and delicious. I was totally disappointed and confused as to how people like it. The patio is huge, so that's probably nice for some drinks in milder weather. We ordered the dumplings, katsu bun, and jerk pork chop. The dumplings were deep fried, tiny, and contained tough fat pieces. The katsu steamed bun had a good flavor combination, but the pork was pretty tough and dry. The pork chop flavors and presentation were good, but again the pork was dry and they didn't trim any of the fat. The food wasn't the worst part; the worst part was being forced to sit on the patio in 98 degree temps for unknown reasons. The table was also next to the grill blowing ash in our face and we couldn't take a bite of food without 4 flies landing on it. The hostess said they were only doing outdoor seating that day and brought us to a table directly in the sun, right next to the huge shady awning that everyone else was sitting under except us. The sun was so bright that I couldn't even see anything around me until I eventually switched to the other side of the table and noticed the multiple empty tables under the shade and that our table was the only one that didn't have an umbrella. Again, I figured they must have reservations or some sort of reason to stick us there. But staff members brought out an umbrella and put it at an empty table next to us as we're pretty much on the verge of passing out, and the shady tables remained unoccupied the whole time from our arrival until we left. I honestly feel personally attacked, like they were trying to torture me for some reason. It worked because we will never return. One extra star because our server was pleasant. read more

You know what, for a bunch of folks who run a kitchen out of a truck, this place is the bomb. Very inventive menu, awesome dining space, friendly folks, and clean bathrooms. The small sandwiches ("BUNZ") are very skillfully crafted taste combinations, the drip coffee gets rave reviews, and the chocolate chip walnut cookies are the best I've ever tasted. They open at 7, but breakfast offerings are limited (the vegetarian burrito thing they did have on offer when I indulged may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was very spicy and good). Most things here are good but slightly overpriced. Their star players are worth the cost, though. Other than a few hiccups with flies and a few quirks in the food-- we will be adopting them as a staple. FOOD BUNS: I LOVED the spicy chicken bun. I will be ordering 2 as my meal from now on. It's savory and light-- the perfect food. I didn't find it all that spicy but that's not a downside. The Cajun bun had a weird texture-- too much slimy stuff. I love fried okra but I think the tomato made it excessive. I wouldn't order again. My husband liked it though. WINGS: the sauce is DELICIOUS! The meat itself was overwhelming. I don't really know how else to describe it. It just smelled like raw chicken (even though it was cooked). I wouldn't order again but they were definitely good. CAESARISH: this is a super awesome salad and that's coming from someone who doesn't normally like salad! I especially loved the polenta. I had never had nutritional yeast before and I think I liked it? I just really loved the salad. It felt hearty and filling but without having to use meat. I'm a big fan. TACOS: the meat was high quality and the flavor was super complex. I definitely don't think the price is fair. They are small bois. GINGER CITRUS SODA: this has way too much grapefruit for my taste but that's my own fault. I was hoping for it to be more ginger-y. It was still refreshing and good but it was pretty overwhelming. I only drank about half. It's also mostly ice and costs $5. So take that as you will. CARAMEL APPLE LAYER CAKE: this is a must have for sure. It reminded me almost exactly of pumpkin pie. The whipped cream was a precious resource. My husband and I shared it and that was perfect for us but we don't love big desserts. Probably best as a single serving for othEr people. ATMOSPHERE It was a beautiful day so a patio restaurant was a great choice! Only issue: FLIES. I don't mean a few flies. I mean 10, all at once, surrounding us. Then came the bees. We had to move once the food came. I strongly recommend sitting under the area with fans-- the flies are deterred there! Otherwise, it's a really cool, laid-back environment. The grill didn't really do the tomatoes any Favors but the tiny mushroom and zucchini was tasty. This was a ridiculously absurd portion. We also had the cold broccoli dish. For my last night in Lawrence my son found us this great out of the way place in quiet yet hip East Lawrence. We sat outside and asked for a candle for some atmosphere which they heartily provided even though it wasn't part of the standard ambiance (it should be) . We ordered late around 8:30pm so we had the small Caesar (huge), the tune poke salad (amazing and surprising) as well as the ribs (it's been a while since I've made noises when I eat ribs but this time I couldn't help myself...fantastic). Cocktails are creative: Bob Bon Mule was tasty and refreshing. Our wait staff was friendly, fun, and happy to keep bringing out mosquito candles for me. What a find! ...highly recommend. read more
