Food was scrumptious--one of us had vegan chili and two others in our party of four shared a chocolate torte. Decor is beautiful--even the bathroom was a lovely sight to behold. So why only one star? The wait staff were indifferent at best, close to rude. We don't expect you to do cartwheels for us but you should be welcoming and you should try to let patrons know you'd like them back. This ruined an otherwise positive experience and while we keep our money in Lawrence as much as we can, we don't plan another visit to Bon Bon. read more

This place is excellent and off the beaten path -- (close to mass street but not on it) which makes the parking situation much easier! We visited on a Saturday at 11 am for brunch. The service was great and the food was even better! For brunch, I chose the pozole chilaquiles and split the garden hash with my bestie. Both were absolutely perfect -- the chilaquiles came topped off with cilantro (if you're not a fan I would recommend not choosing it) however cilantro lovers -- this dish is perfection! The garden hash was also amazing, and comes with a side of their house made hot sauce which is incredible -- I even added a bit to my chilaquiles. For this visit, my 5 year old daughter accompanied us and she was not a fan of anything on the kids menu, it's very non-traditional! We spoke with the staff and they were willing to put together an egg and waffle for her breakfast --side note: the waffles taste like funnel cake and are absolute perfection!! This place earns straight 5s all day -- I recommend taking the chance to visit, you will not regret it! read more

Cocktails ... GREAT! Food ... eh Customer Service ... needs a lot of work. The bartender/server that helped me didn't seem like she cared or wanted to help. Fortunately, another bartender TRIED to build some sort of rapport by simply being nice to me. The vibe and music was awesome, but unfortunately the somewhat rude service totally turned me off. I would not recommend anyone coming to Bon Bon alone. Honestly, I left early being I felt uncomfortable.... read more

I have eaten here many times since they opened. Tonight was most disappointing! Ordered the dumplings. Over fried..not much filling. Chicken Katsu sandwich, I always order this, again it was disappointing..the bun didn't have the fresh steamed taste, very little cole slaw. The chicken was decent. My date had the Katsudon bowl.He liked it. Wait staff, plenty of attention, at the wrong times. Our server never brought our food, someone else whose order was up at the same time as ours. I know this because we sat right by the food truck...he did come and inquire how our food tasted. For someone who is familiar with Japanese food be sure and ask how the dishes are prepared. It is done with some of the same ingredients, with a twist and cooked differently I hope the next time I can give them a higher review. read more

Wandered in the other evening since it's a peaceful stroll from the house. First off, I try to enjoy outside seating in mild weather when available. Bad idea this evening. There was an abundance of flies out. Like a lot. The young man seating me mentioned they spray daily, which I guess makes sense. I treated myself to an over priced cocktail, something mule. Very tasty, but I did have a tinge of guilt paying nearly $10. I started with cheesy French onion tots. Love the idea and the onion/apple sauté was really good. But the tots themselves were meh. The cheese curds melted, but cold by the time it arrived. Maybe I'm being a tot snob, but I think I envisioned something different. There are regular cheesy tots which I may try in the future. I was craving a gooey, tatery mess with homemade tots. These were obviously frozen tots. Nice thought though. Then ordered the spicy chicken bun. Wow, a very small bun with a slim spicy fried chicken tender. It was ok, but I was put off by the cost (6 or 7). I also had to battle the flies for each morsel. Ok I didn't leave hungry, since I ordered two items and was a little boozed. Maybe not totally satisfied or sure I'll wander that way again. read more

Ifcould give a 6th star, I would! We were genuinely blown away by our first visit to Bon Bon. We had pretty high hopes but they really met all our expectations. We came for brunch on a Sunday, & our server Anna was a joy-- incredibly helpful, friendly, and all around fun! The kitchen worked with me and I had some fantastic vegan food, starting with gochujang popcorn tofu and followed by their vegan tofu bahn mi. We were also huge fans of the Repetition Coffee, the Rwanda drip was fantastic. We will definitely be back very soon :) read more

I loved the vibe and atmosphere of this place. It seats probably 30 - 35 people inside and if the weather is nice, there is plenty of outside seating. The bar is really unique and just seeing it makes you want to order a craft cocktail! I tried the Bold Fashioned and loved the flavor combinations. I would definitely order it again. Hubby and David had a beer and thought they had a good selection. Overall, their bar choices should have something to make everyone happy! We tried the French Onion Tots for the table to share. If you love French onion soup, you will love these. We received enough tots that our table of four easily shared them with plenty for everyone. They were a particular favorite of Ashley's! Hubby had the Katsu which is a small steamed bun sandwich with crispy pork. He said it was excellent with great flavor. He suggested that if that's all you're ordering, you should get a side or a half order of something else go with it. I had the Katsudon which was really good. It was a rice based dish with a crispy pork cutlet and amazing flavors. It is certainly worth ordering and could easily be shared with someone. Ashley had the club sandwich and said it was a unique take on the club sandwich and thought it was "yummy". David had the Cassoulet and thought it was delicious and a hearty meal. He really enjoyed the sausage that they used. Overall, we loved our experience here and wouldn't hesitate to return to try more menu items or just to have a drink! read more

We enjoyed the food - inventive and good portions for two people to share. Nice, large outdoor seating areas with fire pits, and is dog-friendly. Inside is cozy with limited seating, but it turned over pretty quickly. Highly recommended, and can't wait to go back! We shared the wings (and for someone who doesn't traditionally eat them, these were outstanding... crisp and flavorful!); tots (just do it); and sprouts (roasted to perfection!). The menu is flavorful and diverse. Drinks were very original and refreshing. read more

Love the vibe of this place. The design elements are so chic and if I opened a place it would be like this. I have to say the service was mediocre. The people were friendly just not the most attentive. The portion of the bun was a bit smaller for the price. It was $6 for basically a slider. Again, I really dig the space and concept but the execution and experience left me wanting more. read more

i went back, and everything was the same. only this time i am covered in mosquito bites, and wish i would have taken a fan. the patio is a horrible idea in this heat. i had the tater tots, and i am glad i did, because the 'steamed bun' my friend got was awful and old tasting. another friend got the dumplings, which were okay, but the filling was barely there. okay okay, the wings were awesome, i only got to taste one, but i would get them to go if i ever got them again. that being said, who doesnt have wings, and how hard is it to drop in a fryer and add sauce?? the bill was pretty high, especially since we left still hungry. makes me wonder if the owners are even around, or if they are just charging a ton of money for half decent food so they can live a life beyond their actual means. read more

Bon Bon from March-October is hard to beat. The patio is chill and urban yet escapist. I adore the interior of the building the rest of the year, but it is very tiny and nearly impossible to get a table. It is worth going to sit at the bar and appreciate the interior restoration, though. Cocktails are what Bon Bon does best. As a matter of fact, they have some of the best cocktails in Lawrence (alongside Limestone and Mass St. Fish House). They are crafted with precision and don't skimp on the booze. They also have a nice and unique selection of beers on tap, which is perfect for grooving on the patio with friends. The food at Bon Bon isn't for everyone. I have discovered that for myself and with friends. It can be hit or miss. In the summer, when they have seasonal specials (which they post on the board on the side of the truck), they can be amazing. But their Asian fusion that is on the menu is a little funky and doesn't always work, in my opinion. That said, I'm addicted to the spicy chicken "bunz." Overall, cocktails: 5 stars; food: 3 stars (sometimes 3.5), for an average of 4. read more

Bon Bon is a fine example how Lawerence is starting to rival Kansas City in the up and coming food scene. Located a few blocks outside of Mass St., it is a nice reprieve from the main strip. The building is beautiful with a large patio full of seating options. The inside is equally as stunning with a bar and giant shelf full of alcohol. Seating inside is a bit closer together but you still have plenty of space. The unique quality that bon bon provides is that the kitchen is not located in the building, there is a food truck located out side that makes the food. The drink menu is robust and has something for everything. The kombucha made especially for them is outstanding. The food menu is a mix of Asian and American deliciousness. The Thai wings are amazing. The steamed buns are also very very good. The hot chicken one does a unique spin in which they do not have the tradition pickles, they use dill in the sauce and cucumbers as a topping. It is outstanding. They serve bowls which sounded and looked delicious as well. The atmosphere is casual but would make an awesome date night spot. Also a good spot for a get together with friends for drinks and food. Will definitely be back. read more

This place is fun! Cute and cozy (plus fire pits!). The menu is wonderful to me- denotes gluten free options and vegan/vegetarian possibilities too. I always get the Caesarish and it's delish! It's also the only thing I can just order without having to make changes. That's one small qualm I have with this place- I wish there was more for me to choose from. My second wish would be for crunchy polenta croutons and cute lil' sprouts on my Caesarish every time (half the times I've eaten here the croutons weren't crunchy and my sprouts were missing). My third wish would be for more croutons. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly read more

Amazing find. A little pricey but excellent drinks, atmosphere and food. Our new favorite place in Lawrence, KS.

Met a friend for coffee recently at Bon Bon. We didn't eat anything but the coffee and atmosphere were fine, albeit a tad noisy (lots of hard surfaces bounce the sound all over). It's nice to have a solid neighborhood alternative to Decade, though I love it, too. I really appreciated the outdoor terrace out front and can't wait for spring. read more

Visited Bon Bon restaurant at pennsylvania and 8th st junction on 6/15/19 between 1:30-2:30 pm with whole family including 3 kids. The restaurant seems at out of place location. Indeed, it is, but nevertheless nice to have it there. Stone front with flower pots, on site parking. The place itself is not that big, divided into 3 small interior sections. There is also patio dining. Overall, customer seating area is enough. Inside the entrance, there is a big bar. we have ordered different dishes. I ordered thai chicken wings with instructions well done, super hot. Food was brought after 20 minutes. I never ate chicken wings of this type before. A bit of sweet, lot of hotness added, brought taste to the wings and i liked it. Everybody said they liked the food, me too. Waitress was nice and helpful. The food is bon-bon, i say. All the food is too costly. Value wise 3 1/2*, food taste wise 4* rating. read more

They have great Vegan Options, which can be hard to find in the Midwest, so we appreciate all of their vegan options and they are very accommodating to questions pertaining to if something can be made Vegan. I cant wait for the summer menu to come out, we have heard there will be even more vegan options! Cocktails are always wonderful as well. The building is super cool, and the service is always great. read more

Bon Bon is a unique and delicious place of to eat. In our party of 3 we had the shrimp toast and French onion tots. Both were very good, don't forget to dig down in those tots to get the caramelized onions. I had the Thai bowl as a side it was very tasty and more than enough to eat. I had the hot chicken bunz very spicy, which is good. I also had the pork bunz. Everything was so good. My drink, Plague for Thy Dowry, was okay; but was horrible with the food. Definitely will go back. read more

I absolutely adore Bon Bon. Totally worth the price, whatever I have ordered. Ask questions. Staff is attentive and very friendly. Love the signature cocktails (too many favorites to choose one) and the unicorn soda and charcoal lemonade are both refreshing and tasty. Plenty of vegetarian options, and kinda that "something for everyone" place if you have a global palate. Seasons and menu change at the same times (which I have always found exciting) so it may be a completely different menu than last weekend...and the patio is rad! read more

Lunch on a Friday, no wait and friendly service. We had small plates cheesy tots (dig down for the super yummy cheese sauce), wings, cold peanut noodles and kimchi fried rice. Good flavor, portions were fitting for small plates. With 4 drinks, (2 at happy hour that we were charged regular price) the bill reached $74 which felt a little pricey in the end. But, overall a nice atmosphere, decent GF options, enviable garden/landscape and tasty food. read more

Super cute, adorable restaurant in Lawrence! It's small and cozy in the winter but when it warms up there is plenty of patio seating. I enjoyed the cozy experience during my visit considering it was January in Kansas. I didn't order any food but I've heard the wings are amazing. Jessica the bartender was mixing up craft cocktails and dropping knowledge about ingredients. Oh, and gracefully climbing up and down a pretty tall ladder to get ingredients. I had a glass of the Lab rosé - I mean there was a Labrador on the box, how could I not! Boxed wine and dogs are pretty much my favorite things on earth. My aunt and uncle both had gin and tonics which come with an entire sprig of rosemary, juniper berries, and edible flowers. A tasty work of art! Bon Bon also has a garden across the street! I am definitely planning to give this place another try when I return! read more

Super solid food and drinks. Wings are amazing and the rest of the menu is super fun. Can't go wrong especially in the warm months when their big outdoor seating is open. Def repeat during our visits to Lawrence. read more

Absolutely amazing food what's got that international and Thai flavor flare. The service is always top notch and the menu contains a lot of food choices that use local ingredients. The restaurant has their own garden within a few yards of the front door. The Thai Bowl is amazing but the Thai Wings are even better. They have a full bar and the place gets hopping at night. They close late too and the night ambiance during the spring/summer season reminds me of a block party. The old food truck they have there adds to the street food feeling and heartens to the locale's roots. I've tried many things on the menu and haven't been disappointed yet. Happy eating! read more

I don't know why this place has so many bad reviews. Look at the date stamps, maybe. Lawrence is a college town. There's bound to be some fluctuation with staff over the years as they find their best fit. Whatever needed fixing, they did that. This is not the same restaurant. Moving on, I went with my main squeeze for a birthday dinner. We were able to get a reservation with no trouble (and even nearby parking) on a First Friday. Our server, Stephanie (Stefanie?), was welcoming, courteous, responsive without being invasive (this is so hard for servers), and accurate. Basically, she was everything you expect a server to be. We ordered from the table within a few minutes of seating and our cleverly-named and expertly-made drinks came out promptly. I ordered the chef's special for the night, a series of dishes that were perfectly proportioned and constituted a whole meal without being too much. At $30, it was a very good value for some of the best food I've had in years, and I used to work for a farm-to-table restaurant with a menu crafted by foodies. There were plenty of people in the restaurant, but the staff were able to keep up perfectly with the load. Nothing came late, cold, or wrong. The only issue that came up was that they were out of gnocci and asked to substitute another pasta (First Friday, remember?). This other pasta was much better than gnocci. I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I would challenge everyone who reads this review to remember I wrote this and share their experience. Thanks for a birthday to remember. We'll be back. read more

It was strange experience, as it was our first visit there. Upon walking in to the restaurant, as we were asking the man behind the counter what the procedure was, he rudely interrupted and said; if he could talk, he'd tell us what to do. So he gave us menus and we were told we could be seated anywhere and someone would come to us and wait on us. We chose a table outdoors and the "first" waitress asked if we received a number or not, she told us anyone with a striped shirt could help us, she brought us silverware, water and took our drink order along with appetizer order. The initial order was handled promptly, along the way three other servers came and checked on us, they asked if while we decided about follow up orders could they take our excess menus leaving us with one until we'd decided what to order for our main course, we said no problem. A little later the gentleman that we had our initial experience with, came by looking flustered and said he needed to take our last menu, as they're short of them and they're getting busy. We flagged down a waitress, got a menu and we placed our dinner order had another round of drinks. After approximately fifteen minutes late our wings arrived, but nothing else of our main order, nearly twenty minutes later the rest of our order showed, at best warm. While the flavor of the dishes was excellent, everything we ordered was no where near as hot as you expected it to be, especially since our entire dinner order never showed all at once. In short, The kitchen is an outdoors food truck, you never really don't know who your assigned waitress/waiter is and with the number system, they never exactly know what table to take the food to. We would probably try it again, but it won't be our Go To place. read more

Great food and drink!! Had there special bun of the day. It was a delicious bbq pork bun. The spicy chicken bun is always delicious.

I love whole idea behind this restaurant and that everything comes from the food truck. Very unique menu with a mix of different foods. Great ambiance. The chips and queso were to die for. I tried the quesadilla too which was okay! I recommend this place for apps and drinks during happy hour as there is an awesome patio and the appetizers looked better than all of the main course options to me! read more

I had heard many good things about Bon Bon and i must say my expectations were exceeded at every turn.. Craft cocktails that match a very chill vibe in a welcoming setting.. I went with a red sangria to start- which came in handy to wash down the kickin' ( and somehow better than advertised thai wings... But undoubtedly the spicy chicken sandwich stole the show. As an admitted follower/ food addict to NYC's famed MomoFuko "Fuku" spicy chicken sandwich --- Bon Bon's offering leaves New York's in the rear vie by a mile.. Applause. Needless to say this will be a "must do" anytime i am in lawrence. read more

I have never taken the time to write a yelp review before, but I felt it was my duty as someone who uses yelp regularly as a tool to counteract the ludicrously low scores posted below. In truth, this is a solid, four-star neighborhood joint, with a well-appointed, cozy-yet-hip interior of a piece with the rest of East Lawrence, and really well executed examples of cuisine not seen elsewhere in Larryville. We ordered two buns (the Katsu and the Hot Chicken), the Bombay Lunchbox, and the delicious Shishito Peppers, all of which I would heartily recommend. We were not drinking, and so enjoyed some Topo Chico (a bit harder to find in Kansas!), but the bar program featuring a dozen-or-so hand-crafted cocktails looked fantastic. In short: this place (which, yes, does operate on a hybrid counter-service model - something which the bartender immediately and happily explained when we entered), offers fabulous food at *very* reasonable prices. And if you aren't an absolute idiot, you'll find yourself completely able to eat each delectable bite without burning your mouth. read more

Very good food. Only down fall was the amount of bothersome flies Indoors. Need to do something about that. The Tomato Party was a great plate of home grown tomatoes and cheeses. Came on a Wednesday around 6:15 for a quick bite before an event. It was pretty empty. Probably only half full. My friends had gotten there about 15 minutes before me and had ordered and received their food before I had even arrived. I ordered the grilled bread. Over 20 minutes had passed and every other table had received their food. Mine was no where to be found. It's not like it was a complicated dish, it's literally grilled bread with goat cheese on top. This is a dish that should only take a couple of minutes to assemble. I talked to the waitress and she apologized and told me that they just got super busy after I ordered. They weren't that busy, the restaurant was only half full. I told her I was done waiting and to cancel the order because I needed to leave in order to get to my event on time. This was my first experience here and it was not good. I probably won't be back for the sole reason, I can't stand when people don't take responsibility. If she would have said "I'm sorry, this was completely our fault, we would love to see you come back," then I would consider giving them another shot. But when you flat out lie and say you're super busy when you're not or when you can't just take responsibility, it shows bad character and I'm not a fan of it. Thank you, next. read more

This will be my new go-to in Lawrence. Cozy interior, hip vibe, a great tap list (even a housemade kombucha margarita on tap!), delicious food with plenty of vegetarian options, kid-friendly. Plus they have their own garden and parking lot (this is a big deal when you're coming from out of town and literally never have quarters to pay meters on Mass st!). I had the kimchi fried rice, tofu bun, bon bon bucha, and tofu chili. It was all wonderful. I can't wait to go back when it's nice enough to sit outside. read more

Amazing food, very friendly and helpful staff and great vibe. Hot chicken, Katsu, Spare Ribs, Chilaquiles all delicious.

So yummy! I had duck tots and the Thai bowl. The bowls are huge. I got a small and I'm definitely glad I didn't get a large bowl! The Charlotte "potion" is also delicious (especially with gin). Prices are a little high on some things but it's worth it. Nice atmosphere too. read more

The food offerings are much needed in town, but you have to order at the counter and then the food is randomly brought out to the table. The process is a bit chaotic. A group of women friends wanted to get together for dinner. Several hadn't been to Bon Bon and I knew they were having a Happy Hour fundraiser for a good cause so I suggested Bon Bon. What I thought would be 7 turned to 13. Since it was happy hour the women were coming and going at many different times. It worked out perfectly and the staff was amazing. I started at the bar then moved to a small table then to a larger one as the group grew. It being so crowded I didn't want to take up more space than needed. I loved how the staff never missed a beat. Great evening with my women friends. Four ended up outside just having a drink, three were at the bar for a few with me, one brought a group with her and sat separately, two had already ordered at another table so it ended with five at another table to finish up. WOW, again amazing how they kept track of us. Fun drinks, wonderful food and great service, and of course fabulous friends, who can ask for. Thanks Bon Bon Staff for providing a beautifully unique atmosphere for us to get together in and enjoy each other. We will definitely be back. read more

I hate to give this place a totally negative review, so I added a star. Also, we are new to Lawrence, retirees who came here to be near our children and grandchildren, and our children raved about this place. We loved the ambiance as we walked in. It was a lovely evening and the menu looked fabulous. What wasn't to like? Well, everything about the service! We sat for almost an hour without even receiving our glasses of wine. When I finally flagged down our cute waitress, she smiled a lot and said "her boys" in the kitchen were having some issues but the food would be out shortly. We finally got our wine, then nothing else. After over an hour I flagged her again. Once more I was told she would talk to "her boys" in the kitchen. I was nice. I had been a waitress during college, and I know about kitchen woes. However, after an hour an a half, I flagged her again. I had to ask her if she would at least bring our appetizers! I had to ask her!! Finally she appeared, all smiles, with two appetizers and my husband's entree. My entree was supposed to take longer to prepare, but an hour and forty minutes is more than a bit longer!! I ate my appetizer, which was good, and he finished his appetizer and entree. My entree was still nowhere in sight. I flagged the waitress again. She seemed surprised we weren't now happy. I pointed out that I still did not have my main entree, while my husband was finished with all his food. Her face fell. She checked the order. I knew from her expression that she had forgotten to place my main entree order. I finally lost it and told her this was unacceptable. I asked for the bill and told her not to bother with my food at this point, unless "her boys in the kitchen" had finally prepared it. If that were the case, I told her to put it into "to go" box and I would eat it at home. I was really mad; we had now been there two hours and forty five minutes, and I had eaten one appetizer. They did comp my meal, but I was so disappointed. I left a small tip, which is something I normally never do. I really want to give the place another try because I love the vibe there and the creativity on paper, and what we did eat was good. However, after service like that, I'm afraid to. I would suggest asking at the beginning of a meal there if the kitchen is working. If not, run! Also, if you have a waitress who keeps talking about "her boys," really run to another place where there is a kitchen staffed by men and women. read more
