Everything about my experience last night was perfect. Our server was courteous and prompt; the cocktails were good-especially the This Is Serious. We had the French Onion Tater Tots as an app, then split the Spring Vegetable Masala and the Chicken Salad. The veggie masala was spiced to perfection, and the chicken salad had a fantastic, tart dressing and was an ample portion for two people to share. The outdoor seating was clean, and the owners have a great aesthetic. The music was on point as well, perfect for the atmosphere and volume just right. I would like to make sure that I take the time here to express the nuance necessary to explain this place and how it could be better.. first of all, the ordering at the counter thing is a fail, and I am surprised at the owner's inability to adapt here, because its clear that it is an inefficient system. And there always seem to be enough servers to manage, so I am unsure what the point is? Being different just to be different is pointless.. which segues into the second half of my review. So, bear with me here... the reason that Lawrence, and East Lawrence in particular, is the MOST COOL PLACE is not because it is populated by intelligent hipsters, but because its denizens are **generally** unpretentious. Not the case with the wait staff here. Look, I will let you be cool if you go in this order: 1- casual, effortless competence, 2- studied pose of indifference. You see how it is important that these go in order? Most people don't mind if you are vibrating with accept-me-as-cool energy, as long as you do your job well. I got funny looks for my attire. I work at a dirty job... found this place on Yelp. I was close by and it was easy to get to... Kimchi Fried rice was very tasty. Likewise the Katsu was delicious on a steamed bun... The waitress was very friendly. read more

Would have given 5 stars if it was a little bit larger inside. We had 8 in our party and loved it. Food was awesome and service was great. I liked the way you order at the counter and all the waitresses were super nice especially Dark Star! Awesome name and service. Tried almost everything on the menu, and each plate was fantastic. While you can certainly order for yourself, the dishes are perfect for sharing, allowing you to try more of what the unique menu has to offer. The employees couldn't be more friendly--with fast and superior service. Great for lunch or dinner, I would recommend eating here every chance you get. We've eaten here a few times and we really enjoy it. I always get the cheesy tater tots - they're decadent and delicious. My husband really enjoys the chicken katsu bun. I think the only thing to be aware of is that it's a bit pricey, especially if you're going to get cocktails. But I think it's worth an occasional night out! read more

This is a beautiful space, but overall, I'm not too impressed. Tables were rather tightly spaced - I felt as if I was sticking my rear end into my neighbor's face when I squeezed through the small space between the tables to leave. Additionally, although I purposefully chose a table fairly far from the door, it was still rather drafty - a function of having go outside to the foodtruck kitchen repeatedly I'm afraid. Food - Facebook alerted my to a winter squash korma that sounded wonderful. Sadly, it was rather lacking in taste - korma is an Indian dish and I at least expected a bit of spice, but there was sadly none. Additionally, the naan that accompanied the dish was burnt and the rice rather dry. In retrospect, I wish I had ordered the cassoulet. Will I go back? Not sure. Prices were reasonable relative to other places in town, but still not an outstanding deal. The next time I feel like treating myself to a rare dinner out, I may go elsewhere instead. read more

This place is lovely. It has the feel of a European tavern with stunning wood tables inside and out. The staff is calm and friendly. Everyone is treated like a friend. I've been told by so many people that this place is great and after eating there I don't know that I will ever go back for food. The menu is a bit haphazard and there wasn't much of a theme, so I went with the tuna poke dish because I usually love that wherever I go. My boyfriend ordered the car-bon-ara. We ordered them to go, which I'm assuming was a mistake. The food was bland and tasted pretty gross. Neither of our orders were satisfying, and--quite literally--left a bad taste in our mouths. The atmosphere is cool and the space is beautiful, so it's a great spot for drinks with friends, but I wouldn't recommend the food. read more

I recently read that Bon Bon rates as Lawrence's #1 date spot, and it's definitely true for us. Bon Bon is our #1 date night destination! We love it so much. The restaurant is located in a remodeled stone building; the kitchen is in a food truck. Bon Bon has a charming, intimate atmosphere, a wonderful selection of creatively presented drinks, nice food, and friendly service. We really like the cheesy tots, and we appreciate the fact that they can be made vegan (!!!) as one of us cannot eat dairy. Bon Bon has vegetable gardens just across the street, and they use produce from the gardens in their menu. It's a place that's quintessentially Lawrence. read more

Food was amazing-I totally get the hype. The drinks were good. The prices are fair considering how they get their food. My only issue was that the staff didn't kick out a drunk 20-something who was playing 'strip-bags' on the patio right next to our table on a quiet Tuesday night. She was highly intoxicated and stripped down into her underwear and the staff just walked by and acted like nothing was wrong with that. If I wanted that kind of atmosphere, I'd go to a bar and it would be way cheaper. And to be honest, a bar probably would've kicked someone out doing that. My table (4 people) spent over 130$ at this place and I would've thought the staff, for the kind of money it takes to eat there, would have done something about the drunk girl. This unique restaurant has the perfect combination of culinary excellence and neighborhood ambiance. My hot chicken sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I have eaten in a long time. It is spicy, but delicious. I also was blown away by the chicken wings. They were amazing. Bon Bon is in an amazing location and I have heard raving reviews so I wanted to try it out for myself. I have been there three separate ocasions and have been underwhelmed each time. The first time I came to Bon Bon, my boyfriend and I went to order food and were treated very poorly. When I asked about the alcoholic kombucha drinks, I was treated in a really condescending manner. The person at the host stand/ our server came off very rude and I am unsure why. After we ordered and paid, we were informed that they had ran out of lettuce. As a vegan, this meant that my order could not be completed. Despite this I decided to give it another go. The second time we attended Bon Bon, my boyfriend and I got drinks and food at lunch time and had excellent service. The third and final time we attended Bon Bon was during dinner time and it went very poorly. The server informed us that the items on the menu were "sharing size," but when we recieved the food, it was in small portions and unsharable. The cost was extremely high for the amount of food we recieved. Once again, being a vegan, there was only one or two options I could enjoy, which is frustrating, and our server did not offer any suggestions for people with dietary restrictions. Overall, I would attend Bon Bon for drinks or maybe a quick snack if I were not vegan. Due to my dietary restrictions, though, Bon Bon will remain a place for drinks for me. read more

Probably my fault for not knowing what to expect, and I hope to come back and change my opinion but was disappointed this time. We showed up, they acted surprised we did not have a reservation (I was under the impression this was kind of a converted food truck so that didn't cross my mind) was told there was a 2 hour wait unless we said at the bar, we decided to sit at the before but not 3 minutes later a table opened up and there wasn't a wait. Had heard a lot about the tots and Thai wings but unfortunately didn't see anything I recognized on the menu. There was a total of like 7 food items, the only thing I even knew what it was was some braised beef nachos with some fancy cheeses, it was 11$ and probably had 15 chips and a few ounces of meat. Also ordered 1 drink and left spending 25$. I am not a picky Eater at all, just surprised they did not have more traditional food, Just not my style I guess. Tucked away & off the beaten path but close enough to downtown & campus to stroll over. Outdoor dining area is great - fire pit & bags to play. Our family of 5, including 3 teenage girls, really loved this place. Both tater tots sides are scrumptious. We also had 3 salads - Caesarish//Thai/Taco - which were top-notch. Super fresh ingredients, some coming from their own garden across the street. Nice selection of seasonal beers. Genuinely kind & helpful wait staff too. This is my 4th time to bon bon, twice for just drinks and twice for eats. The service has been consistently poor! Long waits, which is understandable if you are busy...acknowledgment of your presence should be a no brainer! Slow service, food coming out in the wrong order, that happens sometimes. Bringing food you didn't order then charging you for it and downright rude service shouldn't happen! If you like kimchi, this is your place. If you have a non-adventurous palate, like me, this is not. I ended up eating cheesy tater tots (!), and, although I would not have believed it possible, they were too cheesy for me. My dining companions fared better with their choices, but no one was thrilled with the food. They do have quite eclectic offerings on their spare menu, though, and there were quite a few people dining, so perhaps our opinions or not the majority. My son-in-law recommended this place for my daughter's 40th birthday because he knows the owners & thought the food was good. I could not believe how tasteless & bland most of our plates were. And everyone at the table agreed! The broccoli salad was like dessert, it had so much sugar in it! We left half the already small portion. I could not have eaten my Kimchi rice without asking our server for Sriacha sauce & soy sauce, it was so tasteless. The Udon noodle pancake was also tasteless. We (all of us adults) agreed that what this place does best is chicken (I'm vegetarian so wasn't an option). The wine server had such an angry, sour look on her face that my son asked her if she was having a bad day to which she replied, that was the way her face is. Wrong job, miss. The place was great though because of the outside seating so 2 little kids can run around. The server gets 5 stars though. She (Scotty) was great! I would not eat here again, sorry to say. read more

I really want to like this place, given it's location and resurrection of a fabulous old limestone structure. But alas, after 2 visits I find it consistently disappointing. The service is incredibly slow, and at least one of their servers is alternately spacey and rude. As a vegetarian, I welcome the many veggie options on the menu, but they are quite bland and essentially taste the same (I'm referring to the bowls). Such a shame this place isn't better, given the rise of East Lawrence. I think the ideal way to experience Bon Bon is to have drinks (and maybe the wings which are quite good) on the patio when the weather's fine. I'll be skipping it when i want a full meal. read more
