After volunteering at the PetSmart Olathe dog adoption event, I had built up quite an appetite and decided on carryout from KC Thai in Overland Park. This spot is part of Chef Penny and her husband's restaurant group, which also includes Thai House in KC, plus Bamboo Penny's and Aqua Penny's in Leawood. I ordered the Freestyle Fried Fish -- crispy flounder with fresh steamed vegetables, rice, and a choice of basil, red curry, or sam-rod sauce. I went with the sam-rod, and wow... tangy, savory, umami goodness. I could bathe in it. The fish was hot and crisp, the carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower were fresh and flavorful (and I don't even like vegetables usually). If I'm nitpicking, I'd prefer the veggies diced or julienned, but that's just personal preference. They smartly packed the sauce separately so the fish stayed crispy -- honestly, I'd even want it served that way when dining in so I can add as much as I like. I also got the Pork Thai Fried Rice, which was perfect -- fresh, well-balanced with egg and cucumber, and full of flavor without being doused in soy sauce. Price-wise, KC Thai is a sweet spot: cheaper than Bamboo Penny's, with larger portions, and only slightly more than Thai House but better quality and taste (in my opinion). They have daily lunch specials too. On my list for next time: papaya salad (neighbor swears by it), Thai sausage, Moo Ping (pork skewers), and Khai So. If those dishes are as good as what I had today, KC Thai might officially replace Pad Thai Restaurant as my go-to Thai spot for taste, quantity, and value. read more

A friend asked me to meet her here for lunch. She comes often and knows I enjoy Thai food. I ordered chicken pad Thai, the lunch sized portion was $12.95 and was enough to make a meal without leftovers. I asked for medium and it was pleasantly spicy. Fresh, hot, well sauced, I was very satisfied! I would have liked to be able to pay a few dollars to add a cup of soup, or a side salad. My friend chose the appetizer platter which I think was about $15. It wasn't enough to make a meal of, but would be a nice sampler for two as a dinner date appetizer. The presentation was beautiful. This is the original location for "Bamboo Penny" (owner and chef) and it's very close to home. It's a small place in a strip mall, very clean and inviting and the service is always amazing! I love crab Rangoon, but hate seafood. Theirs has no crab meat, only cream cheese....best ever! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and if you order to go at the bar, it comes out so fast you can't finish your drink before it's ready to go! So glad it's close to home! read more

Okay this place was pretty good. We got the riblets and tiger cry dish as an appetizer and then ordered the red curry with chicken and pad see ew with tofu. The flavors were definitely there. The meat was very tender, especially the riblets that almost had a crisp outer layer while enclosing a juicy tender inside. The tiger cry sauce was a tad on the sweeter side while missing the tartness of what a true crack sauce should taste like. The dining area was very clean including the bathrooms. The price was well lit but calm and the food arrived fairly quickly. We went during lunch hours so the place had a fair amount of diners but we didn't have to wait long at all for our food. Our server was very nice and checked on us a few times during our meal. Overall a great place and a must try! read more

I ordered the yellow curry with vegetables and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of veggies - not only was there plenty of potatoes, carrots, and onion (the vegetables that normally come with the dish) but there was also broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, and cabbage. (At a lot of places when I order veggies, instead of meat or tofu, it's hard to tell a difference between what I would have gotten otherwise). We also ordered the Mango Sticky Rice. Update from most recent visit: I just went on a Friday night and it was extremely busy. I never saw a wait for a table but it did take a while to order and then get the bill. Food is still amazing and I would still recommend! KC Thai is my favorite spot for Thai food. This location is never super busy and we have never had to wait for a table. There is plenty of seating and the space is never loud. It's a great spot great food and conversation! I love their crispy egg rolls and always start with those. I typically get the Pad Thai with beef, chicken or sea food. All are great options. The pad Thai is really tastey and has great flavor (even when you ask for little to no spice!) The music choice was also appreciated. I started with a Thai tea. It was rich and creamy and was perfect beverage to accompany dinner. The crab Rangoon were so light. Perfectly crisp, not too much breading. I don't feel like there was a lot of crab but it was still delicious and I would get them again. I had the Phad See Eaw-Flat noodles with egg, bok choy, broccoli, & mushrooms in a sweet soy sauce and I added chicken. It was fresh and delicious. There were an abundance of vegetables. We were pleasantly surprised at the light colors and simple modern decor. This was a small strip mall place but very nice. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, and it took just a few minutes to be seated. The waitress wiped the table to give us a fresh clean surface, even though the table appeared to already be clean. All the staff were very nice. Food was excellent. We had the sampler appetizer. We were given 4 sauces with it and all were tasty. For dinner we had the pad thai and crab fried rice. Almost forgot pictures cause I was so focused on enjoying the food. We like Thai food and cannot we haven't been here before now. This KC Thai location has been open for 2 years. Their Fresh Spring Rolls were extremely fresh, filing and served with a traditional Thai Spring Roll and Peanut dipping sauce. We also had their Gapow with chicken and Red Curry with chicken. We started out thinking we would have leftovers, but it was so good and we were hungry enough to eat it all. No leftovers . We liked the decor, but the old ceiling tiles should have been painted, the street facing windows with a darkening film and the lighting turned down some for the evening to create an ambiance to go with their nice decor. Decor aside, we really enjoyed our meals here and will be back and even get take out. read more

My absolute favorite. The family usually sticks with the shrimp pad Thai. Also delicious every time. And we cannot stop here without getting an order of their fresh spring rolls. KC Thai is one of my most frequented restaurants in the OP area. I have tried most of the dishes under "Penny's Specialties" and I like them all! KC Thai is the sister restaurant to Bamboo Penny's. I prefer KC Thai as it's quiet and I've never had to wait. I think it may be a bit under the radar compared to the vastly popular Bamboo Penny's, which I like. There's not much not to like about KC Thai. The restaurant is very clean and decorated nicely, the food is high quality, and the service is always good. My only complaint is the pork belly gaprow is no longer offered and that was my go to order. I highly recommend giving KC Thai a visit and trying one of the specialty dishes! read more

This place is new to me and provided great service both times I went. We were also met with a friendly relaxing environment. First time, we dug right into the curry and pad see ew so no pics - they were delicious and a little on the spicy side. Tried the sampler which came with a number of sauces which was great. Second time we came we didn't get the sampler so no array of sauces but I wish that was a thing here as it would add unique aspect. We enjoyed pad see ew, Tom yum soup, papaya salad, sticky rice, and fried cheesecake for dessert. All very good. The Tom yum soup was packed with mushrooms, tomato and flavor. My papaya salad was good too. It had some cabbage which I am not used to in a papaya salad, but it was still good. If you have not already you have to check hot KC Thai located in Overland Park. They have the best drinks, apps, and main entrees. You also cannot forgot the mango sticky rice. It was no nice and refreshing after a large meal. When you arrive, this location is easy to find and park in. Service is super quick. The inside is decorated very nicely and the music is great. They have booth, table and bar seating all inside. Service was very quick and friendly. They gave great recommendations and answered any questions we had. We started with the crab rangoons and some cocktails. All were amazing. For my main course I had the Pham See Eaw. This noodle based dish was soooo good. I would definitely get this again. The chicken fried rice was also good. We capped the night with a beer and some mango sticky rice. This dish was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it. Visiting KC for the summer and had to get some Thai food! As soon as I walked in, the cashier greeted me. The place is decorated nicely and I will definitely come back for a sit-down meal. They have a wide selection of food available, and take-out is also an option (which I ordered). The food was delivered to my very promptly and was great!
