We were looking to try a new restaurant for our Saturday outing and decided on Bamboo Penny's. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that a lot of effort went into making the dining room and bar area fun, attractive, and inviting. Although we were being seated at a two-top, we noticed the bar was wide open and decided to dine there instead. Great choice. The bartenders were engaging, attentive, and very helpful in walking us through the menu. We started with Penny's Combo Fresh Spring Rolls, Thai Spicy Sausage, Penny's Rangoon, and Crispy Egg Rolls. This was a great way to sample several appetizers, and everything was delicious. My partner ordered the Salmon Panang Curry and really enjoyed it. The salmon was cooked just right, the curry had great flavor, and the broccoli paired nicely with the dish. I went with the Tiger Cry Steak, which was a little more hit-and-miss. The Tiger Cry sauce brought plenty of heat along with some really interesting flavors. The glazed carrots were excellent, perfectly glazed with just the right tenderness. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes were over-whipped, giving them a gummy texture. The biggest disappointment was the steak itself. The quality wasn't what I expected, the steak appeared to be a few ounces short of the advertised 12 ounces, and on its own it lacked seasoning and flavor. The intramuscular fat was also quite chewy, making portions of the steak difficult to cut and eat. That said, one disappointing entrée wouldn't keep me from returning. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, service, appetizers, and Salmon Panang Curry. Bamboo Penny's has plenty on the menu I'd like to come back and try....I'll probably just stick with the non-beef options next time. We absolutely LOVED Bamboo Penny's in Leawood! We celebrated my daughter's 22nd birthday there, and everything from the ambience to the food was AMAZING! The atmosphere was beautiful, the food was delicious, and it made for such a great birthday experience. Our server was okay, but unfortunately the customer service could have been better. Our server was pretty dry and didn't provide the warm, attentive service we would have expected. I definitely think the staff could benefit from some additional customer service training. I was thrilled to return to Bamboo Penny's. This was the site of my first Yelp Elite Event in KC. So I was nostalgic. My wife and I met our friends here for an early dinner at 4:45 PM before a 6 PM showing of the Odyssey at the IMAX across the street. We were seated promptly upon arrival in the upstairs where it was a little warm because it was so hot outside, but they had the fans and the AC going and it cooled off as we sat there. The theater ended up being much hotter. Ha! We started with spring rolls and grilled chicken dumplings. I ordered the combo Pad Kee Mao () with beef, pork and chicken. My wife doesn't eat much so we shared it. And it was plenty for two people, especially after the appetizers. My friend Dave had the mango duck, which was very tasty as he was kind enough to share a bite with me. His wife ordered the cashew chicken, which she raved about. It was their first time at Bamboo Penny's, my wife's too. Everyone loved it and said they would love to return. Just the final note, the four of us dined several times together at Aqua Penny's, which used to be diagonally across the street and has now permanently closed. Bamboo Penny's is easily one of the prettiest restaurants in KC. The decor is absolutely top-notch and creates a great atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Our server was very kind and attentive, but one thing to keep in mind is that the servers earn commission, so they may be more likely to recommend menu items regardless of their personal opinion. For starters, we ordered the Crispy Chicken Egg Rolls. They were okay, but I probably wouldn't order them again. Most of what I tasted was the glass noodles, and the other flavors didn't stand out much. For my entree, I got the Combo Pad Kee Mow with shrimp and beef at a medium spice level. The spice was perfect. The noodles were cooked just right, the beef was tender, the shrimp was fresh and plump, and the vegetables complemented everything well. The sauce tied it all together with a nice touch of sweetness. I would definitely recommend this dish. My friend ordered the Lump Crab Fried Rice and added shrimp. She let me try some, and it was incredible. The flavors were vibrant, fresh, and balanced. The only downside is the price, as the crab adds quite a bit to the cost, but the quality was there and you could tell it was fresh. Overall, Bamboo Penny's delivered a great dining experience. I found the inspired collection of ingredients in their house specialty pineapple fried rice dish along with just the right blend of oils and spice to be truly unique and unlike anything I've ever enjoyed. We decided to drop in for some Thai cuisine before our night commenced at a nearby cocktail bar. Pennies is incredibly clean, though the pricing is definitely on the elevated side. I won't attempt to pronounce the exact name, but I ordered a barbecued pork and noodle bowl that came with pork dumplings and a side of broth. Packed with fresh spring onions and baby bok choy, it tasted remarkably fresh and clean. Naturally, I overloaded it with all the incredible spices available--my stomach will definitely be thanking me later! One friend ordered the veggie plate, which led to a few tense, dramatic moments of debating whether the accompanying dumplings were vegetarian or meat. Once we finally got official confirmation that they were vegetarian, our "happy meal" successfully resumed. My other friend went with the chicken fried rice, which looked fantastic. My coworkers and I visited during lunch time and it was quite busy. We had reservations for 6 and were setup in back booth. Our waitress Chanisara was very helpful and patient. Finding a place to park was very difficult, especially since I wasn't familiar with the layout of that shopping area. Maybe it's not as bad when it's not holiday season, right before Thanksgiving. There are almost too many options on the food menu, and the drink menu is very extensive. I'd recommend checking out the food menu online before you go to save some time. The service was great, but because we were a party of 12, the tip at 22% was automatically added, which was OK, but it's better to know that upfront. I had two appetizers and a tropical beverage so it was over $50 total. The Chicken Satay had 3 good-sized flat pieces of chicken, and the crispy Shrimp in a Blanket were wonderfully crispy, but a little too spicy for me. The sauces with both were good. It's a fairly noisy restaurant, but again, maybe that was because it was right before the holidays. The decor has too many conflicting elements going on, some very modern, but then there are a lot of long fake floral things hanging from the ceiling that seemed gaudy and out-of-place. I'd heard lots of good things about Bamboo Penny's, and I'd try it again on a less busy day, but it's probably not going to be on my "favorites" list. read more

I had been planning to try Bamboo Penny's for at least a year since moving here and finally did this past Friday night. The positive: It's a beautiful atmosphere and the service is great. Our server named Joy was extremely attentive. The restaurant is decorated beautifully and it looks very classy. It was very busy so I know it's popular. The less positive: My lower rating is because I didn't love the food which is very important. The prices are about 25% higher here than many of the other Thai/Asian Fusion places in the area so I'd want the food to be as good if not better. Others in our party got fried rice dishes and liked them so it was a mixed result but all agreed that they would expect to like the food more for the higher cost. Appetizers: The table shared 3 appetizers. Crab Rangoon, Vegetable Tempura, and Spring Rolls. All were $12 each. The spring rolls were good and the best food I tried here. I enjoyed the ground chicken. I'm used to getting shrimp or shrimp and pork so I appreciated the different protein. They were rather small but there were 4 of them cut in halves. 2 different styles of peanut sauce. My favorite spring rolls I have found in the area are larger and cost $7.99. They are shrimp and do not have a chicken option. The plating was very nice. The crab Rangoon was fine. Nothing special about it but cooked well. Again the plating was nice. The vegetable tempura was disappointing. There was one tiny piece of sweet potato and nothing jumped out as tasty. There was some sort of white vegetable that was so flavorless that nobody could figure out what it was. The broccoli were larger pieces that were basically broccoli with a tiny bit of tempura crust. The two large broccoli were most of the dish. There was some sort of mayo based sauce . Definitely not worth $12. Entree: I decided to get the Beef Noodle Soup which they had listed in parentheses as phó. This is not like traditional phó that I normally get. It's definitely beef noodle soup with a heavy base of beef stock/broth. It is extremely oily/greasy and not lite like the phó broth I prefer. I started feeling a bit nauseated after just eating a bit because of the grease from the soup/broth. There was nothing wrong with the soup but I don't eat that much greasy food and I don't feel good when I do. I now know the description of beef noodle soup is a better description than phó. Again, the service was great and they did give me extra basil which I tried to use in the beef noodle soup to give it a more fresh, lite taste. It didn't work and all I could taste was the heavy, oily, beef stock/broth. I also really like to use sriracha in my phó and they only had Thai spices to add. I think Bamboo Penny's is much more Thai focused than any other style of Asian. My Beef Noodle Soup was $21. I normally pay around $12-$15 for phó. The servings are large like at most Asian restaurants these days. All of the plating was very nice. If I go back, I would try a curry since I think Thai is probably a better selection at this restaurant and more in their wheelhouse. read more

Seemed understaffed. Our dirty appetizer plates sat on the table the whole meal of dinner. And we even had stacked them up for them. We split a lot of appetizers and there were all good! I got the combo pad Thai and it was just ok. For the combo, I chose chicken, tofu, and shrimp. Each was very bland and must have been added at the last second. This is not my first time at Bamboo and it certainly won't be the last. I have dined in and gotten take out several times. Each time the food and drinks have been awesome. This visit I got the Basil Fried Rice (no meat; medium heat level) and Chicken pan seared dumplings. Usually, when I order the medium heat it tastes like it. This time it tasted mild. However, I asked my waitress for Siracha sauce and she brought out a small plate with pepper flakes, siracha and two clear oils with peppers in them. Definitely kicked the spice level up! My friends ordered the veggie sampler combo, lo mein, basil fried rice with shrimp and penny's Rangoon. Drinks: one had a mocktail and the other had a seasonal strawberry daiquiri. If you could pass, go to Hot Basil in Overland Park for solid everyday Thai food with bigger portions and better flavor at a more reasonable price. I'm here on Christmas Day with my niece and nephew. They didn't have any meal plans and Penny's happened to be open. We were sat upstairs in Ashley's section. She was so incredibly patient and thorough. My niece & nephew don't usually eat Thai food & she walked us through the menu. I'm here somewhat regularly and she taught me a lot. She is a treasure. We shared both the Gaprow and Massaman Curry. They were great for a cold night. The curry is sweet and savory, heavy (in a good way) with peanut flavor. The Gaprow was pretty hearty and I added some fish sauce for a bit of heat. She had a good coffee martini thing and I stuck with TsingTao. Definitely recommend. The kitchen is fast. We had the following: - Traditional Pad Thai: way too sweet. Also tastes like noodles tossed in the bottle Pad Thai sauce you can get from your local Asian market. Won't order again. - Tom Kha soup: not great. Missing usual Thai flavorings you'd find in soups: lemongrass/galanga/ginger. Won't order again. - Pad Kee Mow: flavor gets tiring and overwhelming after a few bites. Not enough noodles, whole lot of sauce. Won't order again. - Basil Fried Rice Crab: missing Thai flavorings.
