This is THE Chinese spot in KC I have been looking for! Some of the best pan fried dumplings (order when you first sit down) and amazing gluten free options. My girlfriend hasn't been able to have crab rangoon in 8 years and we finally found some she can enjoy. The general chicken was also amazing and so full of flavor and just the right amount of breading. The restaurant is smaller, but we had no problem getting a nice booth. I will say service was a little slow. I believe our waitress was the only one working so she was running around like crazy helping every table and we didn't get the best service, but she was very flustered it seemed. Found this on the Fine Me Gluten-Free app. My sister has celiac and hasn't been able to eat crab Rangoon in ages. I've never seen a GF wonton wrapper and haven't attempted to make my own, so we were shocked to see this on the menu. I'm guessing they use a rice paper sheet, fill it and roll it up like an egg roll and then fry it. It totally satisfied that craving and we'd order this again. The GF sesame shrimp was tasty and so were the GF noodles. I forgot to take a photo of the menu, but they were like pad see ew noodles. I forgot to take photos of the other dishes. Our table also had Springfield cashew chicken and the KC sirloin fried beef dish. Service was good and our leftovers were packaged in separate bags with GF stickers on them. I really appreciated this. All of us took home leftovers, so the value was good. In the past, I've felt like Fortune Wok servings were smaller and I never had leftovers (the original metcalf location) but I was happy with our serving sizes this time. It's really exciting to find gluten-free Chinese food! They probably had about 15 GF items on the menu and we will definitely be back to try more. I don't know if they have gluten-free soy sauce or tamari, though, so it's worth calling ahead to check or bringing your own if you're planning on dining in and want soy sauce with your meal. read more

I must say, Sir, well done. Of the orange-chicken variety, what novel techniques and materials! These anarchists use ENTIRE PIECES OF CHICKEN! Whole Chicken - dare I say - breast halves? No chunk nonsense here. For the price they charge, which is handsomely dignified, they hook it up! The sauce though, was a particularly pungent and tangy frequency of sweetness that will in fact haunt you. The flavor notes in that sauce - coupled with the breading and chicken stuffs - is like hearing an opera singer hit the fateful high-A note! Bravo, monsieur! Honestly, probably my favorite rendition of Orange Chicken I've had in this entire city. I've had some better stuff in Chinatown in San Francisco, but outside of that, this place is kickin' chicken! The rice as well was expertly prepared and steamed to fluffy fruition, but I must change course here and account for the fallen star: it was the egg rolls. Terrible. Near $7 for 2, nay the size of my middle finger, and just as salty. It was some manner of pork stuff, and I'll tell you, they were NOT worth much more than buck an a quarter for the lot; though they'd collected nearly 5 quid extra for the trouble. Way too much for such nonsense. My wife got the crab rangoon, it definitely scratched an itch she'd had for some time; so maybe if fingerfoods is your aim, shoot for those, because they have "bits of real crab in it, so you know it's good." I'll refine my order, and call back for another. Word to the wise, though: DO NOT consume the hot mustard. It's yellow horseradish pure, and it'll change the way you blink. God speed. read more

Wow this was super tasty and I'm so upset we've been in the area for 4 years and just now tried it. We went on a Sunday evening and it packed out with a wait! Service was a little slow but that is ok bc it was worth it and they were busy! Food came out piping hot and what a fantastic portion I tried the orange chicken with fried rice and oh my. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Just the right amount of sauce and orange and the fried rice was nice and moist with a great portion. The dumplings were to die for and I haven't tried any like that ever. They took a little bit longer to make and she told us that since they were homemade. Hubby tried the chicken pad Thai and said it was good but wouldn't get it again and would try something different. We will be back! read more

The availability of good asian food here just isn't the same you know? It's almost like searching for a needle in a haystack. All that being said, Fortune Wok IS ... it just IS the place you want to be. Everything from their food to customer service was a 10/10. Their crispy fried tofu stuffed with shrimp was the perfect combination of crispy and savory! And, my goodness, you've just got to order their wok-fried meat with veggies! Their braise beef with asian cabbage was also to die for. Talk about meat just melting in your mouth! Picked up takeout from here the other night after not having been there for years. The shrimp fried rice was excellent. Crab Rangoon was great too, but I was surprised there were only four to the order instead of six like pretty much every other Chinese restaurant in town. We also ordered chicken on a stick and the shrimp summer rolls. Chicken on a stick was equally excellent as well, and a really nice portion for the price. The summer rolls also were nice and big, and the sauce was delicious. It is certainly not the least expensive Chinese restaurant in town, but I suppose you get what you pay for! read more

Fortune Wok has been our family's go-to for traditional Chinese fare for more than ten years now! We were introduced in the late-2000's by friends from church! That said, what has kept us coming back are two things: the AMAZING food, and the lunch specials! Over time, I've had pretty much all the mainstream dishes from the menu, and everything is at LEAST solid, if not fantastic! My all-time favorite, though, is and remains the Moo-shu pork! There's a special flavor in the dish that just sends it to 11, and the pancakes are always served warm and ready to build! My advice: ask for an extra serving of plum sauce! The weekend lunch specials are an AWESOME value! But, really, you get so much food at any serving time that it remains a great value, even at dinner prices. Most of the time, we end up with a full, second serving of leftovers for most of our dishes, especially if you make the dive for one of the excellent appetizers, such as eggrolls or crab rangoon! The dining room is as you would expect in a strip mall - a little tight, some booths, some open tables. It all tends to be clean and well maintained. The restroom, not so much, but it's at least functional. The service here is always very prompt, but sometimes not as "friendly" in nature. That latter point simply depends on who you get.
