    Crab Rangoon

We celebrated the Lunar New Year at Fortune Wok in OP by ordering one of everything (almost ) It was ALL was delicious, but the GF Lemon Chicken was soooo also really enjoyed the hot and sour soup - it was different than most places but in a GOOD way Excellent service as well. It was definitely worth the drive from NKC.

This is THE Chinese spot in KC I have been looking for! Some of the best pan fried dumplings (order when you first sit down) and amazing gluten free options. My girlfriend hasn't been able to have crab rangoon in 8 years and we finally found some she can enjoy. The general chicken was also amazing and so full of flavor and just the right amount of breading. The restaurant is smaller, but we had no problem getting a nice booth. I will say service was a little slow. I believe our waitress was the only one working so she was running around like crazy helping every table and we didn't get the best service, but she was very flustered it seemed. This is our new go to spot in KC for Chinese food!

My wife and I stopped in on a whim and were blown away. Probably the best Chinese food we've ever had. For sure the best egg drop soup ever! Wife had had beef & broccoli and I had triple delight lo-mein. Both were delicious and had enough to take home for another meal. Can't wait to go back!

Found this on the Fine Me Gluten-Free app. My sister has celiac and hasn't been able to eat crab Rangoon in ages. I've never seen a GF wonton wrapper and haven't attempted to make my own, so we were shocked to see this on the menu. I'm guessing they use a rice paper sheet, fill it and roll it up like an egg roll and then fry it. It totally satisfied that craving and we'd order this again. The GF sesame shrimp was tasty and so were the GF noodles. I forgot to take a photo of the menu, but they were like pad see ew noodles. I forgot to take photos of the other dishes. Our table also had Springfield cashew chicken and the KC sirloin fried beef dish. Service was good and our leftovers were packaged in separate bags with GF stickers on them. I really appreciated this. All of us took home leftovers, so the value was good. In the past, I've felt like Fortune Wok servings were smaller and I never had leftovers (the original metcalf location) but I was happy with our serving sizes this time. It's really exciting to find gluten-free Chinese food! They probably had about 15 GF items on the menu and we will definitely be back to try more. I don't know if they have gluten-free soy sauce or tamari, though, so it's worth calling ahead to check or bringing your own if you're planning on dining in and want soy sauce with your meal.

The food was beyond my expectations. Delicious!! Also our server was amazing. Ms. Ming was so great and polite. Explain the menu and had so many great recommendations. Her hospitality was amazing. Thank you Ming!!

We were seated on time at a table next to the bar-side of the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, it's a nice, if standard size for a strip-mall space, but I really appreciated that the tables were not stacked on top of each other, as seems to be the case at more and more places these days. It felt like there might be some chance of our entire conversation not being completely overheard by our neighbors, which was nice for a change! Our waitress was fantastic! She walked us through the menu, the restaurant's approach to cooking and seasonality, some of her faves, and made wonderful recommendations! We decided to split a few small plates, which was a great approach! We got to try about 1/3 of the small plate menu, and loved it all! It was all great, but the Black Cardamom Burnt Ends are NOT to be missed! It made my cardamom-loving, Midwest soul very, very happy indeed! The space is a really nice size - not massive or overwhelming - and with the shades drawn down (to seal out the late afternoon sun, thank goodness!) and dim lighting, the mood vibes were solid for a romantic anniversary dinner! The other ambiance item of note is that the restroom corridor smelled absolutely fantastic! Upon investigation, it was due to a burning candle from a lovely local-KC company that was custom made for the restaurant! Yes, they're for sale, and yes, we picked up two! While everything was lovely and the food was very good, you're definitely paying a high price for it. Not that it's not deserved, but the "value" feels aren't necessarily "off the charts", by any means. And that is really my only critique, if there is any at all! Food = 5/5 Facility = 4/5 Service = 5/5 Ambiance = 4/5 Value = 3/5

Two words: highway robbery. I came here during the weeknight to see a film in their "dine-in"…read moretheater, thinking it was similar to other AMC Theater Dine-ins, where you can order your food in the actual theater... nope. You are to order that at the concessions stand in the lobby, and that's not clear-cut to do unless you ask around. The food itself is basic, which is fine, but chicken nachos shouldn't cost $14 with a $1 delivery fee. On top of that, they didn't even get my order correct (came with jalapenos when I requested to not have such). Need more insult to injury? Only one person working behind the concessions stand in a line of 6+ groups with no help in sight. Final insult: no booze is offered - no VINO, beer, cocktails... nothing. For $12 a ticket, I plead with you to consider other theaters in the metro before you come here.

I will start with the reasons why this review is missing the 5th star…read more.. Our initial impression of Vinotopia was utter confusion. We were greeted by the hostess with, "hello," followed by an awkward silence and a blank stare. Uhh...hi? After a few more seconds of silence, my husband finally asked, "So, do we just sit anywhere?" To which the hostess responded, "Sure. You can sit anywhere in the bar or patio." I was sure I had seen a more formal dining setting in my research before we came, so before we sat down I blurted out, "Can't we get a table for two?" Again she responded, "Sure," grabbed two menus, and started walking. This issue could easily be corrected with a little training, or retraining, on how to greet guests. When we got to the dining room, she said we could sit at any two top. The only problem was two walls of the dining room are entirely made up of windows, one that is facing due west, and at about 5:30PM this means the light and heat of a thousand suns. All of the two tops were along the windows. We chose the one with the least direct eye burning light, but we still had to dine with our sunglasses on. Another couple was seated at a two top behind us and wound up being so uncomfortable with the heat and brightness that they changed their minds and left moments later. Sure the view of Overland Park is beautiful, but something has got to give, because no one wants to go on a nice romantic date and have to wear shades. Alright, the positives. The service was great. Both our server, and the other server in the dining room, worked very well together to make our experience enjoyable. The live piano music created romantic ambience. The food was delicious, albeit a little monochromatic--the plates were severely lacking green (or any contrast from brown and orange tones. see photos if you don't believe me.) We started with the bleu cheese stuffed figs. To my surprise (& perhaps dismay), these were made with dried instead of fresh figs. The flavor was good, however the texture wasn't as pleasant as it would've been with fresh figs. I had the braised pork shank that was fall-off-the-bone tender, served with a potato mash, roasted carrots, a peach compote, topped with roasted tomatoes and a jus of sorts. Well seasoned, great flavors. He had the center cut of beef, served with white asparagus, and a potato mash, and a beef jus. Again, flavors were there, but maybe green asparagus would've made the dish appear less anemic. We were also given a small dish of very bland housemade ricotta with a few small slices of bread. We could've done without. Overall, we would dine hear again, but I think we will wait until a slightly cooler evening so that we can sit on the patio. (It is less strange to dine in sunglasses if you're outside.) It was pleasant and romantic, despite the hiccups.

The Moderno salad -- with cherries, cured beef, pine nuts, and goat cheese -- was flavorful, though the espresso vinaigrette unfortunately tasted more like straight vinegar than espresso. I had the short rib bolognese and it was absolutely delicious. Others at the table ordered the Funghi pasta with creamy white sauce, which was good but could have used a bit more mushroom flavor. The Toscana chicken breast (bone-in) with sun-dried tomato sauce had that perfect "marry me" flavor -- rich and satisfying. For dessert, we had the Plate chocolate cake with raspberry and pistachios. It was a huge slice, with a rich chocolate flavor. So why not five stars? Despite having reservations, we were seated right by the kitchen where servers pick up food. Made more annoying because the restaurant had a lot of empty booths and tables in the main dining room. The upside was that the pizza ovens kept us warm, but it wasn't the most relaxing spot. There were also a couple billing issues: the tip was calculated on the post-tax total rather than pre-tax. Also our prix fixe dinners included dessert and we opted to upgrade to a different dessert from the menu. Oddly the up-charge was $6, even though the menu price difference was only $3. That said, Plate offers delicious, well-priced food (though the drinks are on the expensive side), and it's still a great choice for Italian food in Kansas City

Decent option for dinner…read more I stopped by earlier this week on my first night in town, and sat at the end of the bar. The bartender served me a Guinness (on tap, of course!) and then recommended the Monday Steak Night special ($60) - a prix fixe option which included a salad plus one of four types of steak, sides, and dessert. I opted for the house salad (with sherry vinaigrette dressing), the hangar steak (he was selling it hard!), sautéed green beans, and lemon meringue pie. The house salad was superb, with delicious chunks of goat cheese! I also enjoyed the sautéed green beans, loaded with sliced almonds and fresh garlic. The hangar steak was probably the most disappointing, and solely responsible for this review not earning 5 stars. I took half of it to go along with half of the green beans. The lemon meringue pie looked delicious but I could not eat another bite, so that also went into a to-go container. Back in my hotel room that night, working late as I was jet lagged, I ate that pie. OMG! PURE HEAVEN!! And the main reason this review earned 4 stars! Will be back for the salad and green beans and pie! And some Guinness on tap, of course!!

Overpriced chicken, a stellar mushroom side, and an aggressive exit strategy…read more After some custom cocktails nearby, our famished group headed to Rye for some dinner and dessert. The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Proceed with caution.
