This spot is located inside Strang Hall, which makes it a fun place to grab a meal--there are several small restaurant concepts under one roof, so everyone can find something they like. Anousone has some great options. The pork bánh mì was a standout--flavorful, well-balanced, and definitely something I'd order again. The yellow curry, however, wasn't quite as impressive. It was missing a touch of sweetness that could have rounded out the flavors better.

Outstanding food and service! I can not believe you can get quality food in a food hall but this place has it! This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I was allowed to taste several other dishes while sitting at the bar and each item was as delicious as the first! I had the adobo ribs and WOW! All the spices and flavors are PERFECTION. I can't wait to go back! I tasted the curries, the pho broth, the rice pudding....EVERYTHING IS AMAZING! Thank you!

Good flavorful food and variety of options. I had the Khao Poon which was delicious, but I wish it had more meat. My friends had the Banh mi and the Beef Pho which they also liked but also said that they could have more meat in their meals. Service was fast and staff was friendly. I would visit again because they had good flavor.

My husband and I live in Hawai'i but visit KC every Fall to catch the Chiefs game. Anousone is one of our favorite places for good SE Asian food at Strang Hall, and we make every effort to squeeze in a meal at least once here during our annual trip back to KC. Yes, the food is that good --- so so good that I prioritize our schedule to accommodate dining at Anousone. Chef Thomson is extremely talented and continues to elevate his menu year after year. We first dined at Anousone in 2022 and was "wow-ed" by the flavor of every single dish! Superb! We returned in 2023 and then today (2025) and were blown away once again by the deliciousness of the new dishes introduced by the chef. Sooooo "Ono!" This is one of the best places to dine in KC! Chef Thomson, "mahalo" for the wonderful dishes you bring to the Midwest and we look forward to seeing you soon. Please come to Hawai'i, Chef Thomson. The Grinz is Broke Da Mouth! Sending you Aloha!

My second time at Strang Hall and won't be the last. I recommend going here if you're not sure where you want to eat. There's so many options! And if you love food like me you can get bits and pieces from all the restaurants they have to offer and try a little bit of everything. This visit I finally got to try Anousone. I ordered mushrooms, papaya salad, red curry wings, and egg rolls. If you're getting a protein and wanting a nice side I would definitely get the mushrooms or the papaya salad which I loved especially. It was refreshing to pair with the wings. I'm not crazy about eggrolls in general but my partner liked them and so did I. But my favorite out of everything I ordered was definitely the wings. The skin was the perfect crispiness you'd want your wings to be and overall tasted delicious!! I only ordered six and wished I ordered 12 Ordering was a breeze and the wait was little to none. They definitely have a welcoming staff. I'll be coming here again just for those wings and whatever else Strang has to offer

I always love stopping in for lunch at Anousone in Strang Hall. I always get the stir fry noodles and switch up what meat I get in the noodles. I most recently had the crispy pork belly. The pork belly was very tasty and was a great addition to the noodles. The serving size is very large and a great deal. I never have to wait long for my order to be ready. Strang Hall itself has plenty of seating, both indoor and outdoor and has great online ordering options. This is a great spot to meet a group for a meal, drinks, or both!

Nothing but nice things to say about Anousone. We've been a few times before for carryout and have had the banh mi. This time though, we stayed and ate in the food hall (which was SUPER clean and enjoyable!) Our experience started out ordering directly with the owner, who was so hospitable and happy to answer our questions and make recommendations. We shared the sticky rice plate with fried wings as well as the steamed buns with beef, pork belly and curried chicken. The owner also threw in the fried brussel sprouts. Everything was so yummy! There are several more things on the menu that I look forward to trying when I return.

Khao Poon, Chicken Laab, Pho, Yellow Curry, Brussels Sprouts, Crab Rangoon

Wow! The food was amazing. So many layers to the curry and pho flavors but still amazing comfort food. The Khao Poon was fantastic as was the yellow curry. Also, the chef spoiled us with incredible kindness! Will be back asap!

Never had a bad meal here. Our absolute favorite wings in town are actually the red curry drummies, and they have a gf version too!

Really good! The breakfast sandwich always hits the spot. But pork belly is a close second.

Restaurants come and go. I watched one disappear from this very spot years ago. In its place is a Lao family sharing a piece of home with Kansas City. From the moment we walked in, the room smelled of fresh herbs, toasted spices, and slow-simmered broths. Before I even opened the menu, I had a feeling I was about to eat well. Mimi welcomed us like old friends. Instead of rattling off the most popular dishes, she asked what we liked, talked about the food she grew up eating, and guided us through the menu with the kind of pride you can't fake. We started with the Moo Ping and Lao sausage, and both set the tone for the rest of the meal. The grilled pork was smoky around the edges with a savory marinade and just enough sweetness to keep you reaching for another skewer. The Lao sausage was unlike anything I'd had before--packed with herbs and spices and served with crisp vegetables, fresh ginger, jalapeños, and a bright dipping sauce that let every bite taste a little different. For our entrées, Mimi recommended the Pad Kua Mee and the Mee Ka Til. On paper they're both noodle dishes. On the table, they're two completely different stories. The Pad Kua Mee leaned on the quiet confidence of perfectly cooked rice noodles kissed by the wok, while the Mee Ka Til wrapped tender beef in a fragrant coconut curry broth layered with herbs, peanuts, and vegetables that changed with every bite. Then came my first taste of mango sticky rice. Sweet, juicy mango, warm emerald-green sticky rice, silky coconut cream, and toasted sesame seeds. I actually caught myself doing a little happy dance at the table. After we finished eating, Mimi pulled up a chair and shared a little of her family's story. One thing she said stayed with me: every dish is tasted before it leaves the kitchen. Not because they're chasing perfection, but because they want every plate to taste the way their family remembers it. That's when the meal made sense. The food wasn't trying to impress me with oversized portions or flashy presentations. It was trying to introduce me to Lao cuisine the way their family knows it--with care, with pride, and with recipes that have earned their place at the table. I came because I wanted to try Lao food. I'll keep coming back because Khop Jai Der reminded me that the best restaurants don't just feed you. They share a piece of themselves, and if you're lucky, you leave with a story worth telling.

I…read morehave been craving it ever since and for my birthday lunch this week I drove across the metro to this Lao restaurant to satisfy my craving. Khop Jai Der is a very small place with tables crowded together that made it difficult to navigate with my current and temporary situation of using crutches. I ordered the Papaya Salad and asked for moderate spice level. What I received looked nothing like my last fantastic salad. Very little sauce, a skimpy amount of papaya, pieces of cabbage that were way too large and a spice level that was way over-board. The female that brought my dish ignored me for the rest of my lunch even though she was sitting at the table next to me talking to her friends. I never got a water refill that I desperately needed and had to get up and maneuver my way to the restroom for napkins after deleting the two at the table because of severe sinus drain. I finally took 70% of my meal to the register and asked for a to-go box. I showed my Hmong co-worker the next day and he agreed that this was not the place to get what I craved. He brought me a homemade bowl of the greatest papaya salad for my lunch today so I finally did find redemption, but it wasn't from KJD. With an almost inedible $20+ lunch, inadequate and dismissive service while my digestive tract was on fire and a claustrophobic environment, I can't find a reason to recommend this place. The biggest let down that I've had in a very long time.
