We had extended family visiting and they picked The Brass Onion. What a great choice made even more fabulous by Kaki, our server, and the manager. Our extended family and my mom are deaf and we've never dined where our server could directly communicate with them. Kaki is a CODA (child of deaf adult) just like my sister and I. We are usually doing the communication for everyone, but not today. Our family enjoyed talking with her and having her take great care of our family. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I especially liked the Avocado toast and mimosa. I know I'll be back to have more. We have a family member turning 70 tmw and we ordered the Fresh Beignets to celebrate. This place was a hit! I went for happy hour and stayed for restaurant week menu. Cocktail I had was called pour decisions and it was so good I had two! Starting with the onion dip which was light and delicious served with fresh toast points. Side salad next which was fresh and well done. Then came the shrimp and grits which was honestly better than some I have had in Louisiana! The sauce was absolutely delicious well balanced with spice. I review restaurants with my OAT method: O= Overall experience - We were immediately greeted by the owner, who was welcoming and walked us right to our table. He even came by during our meal to ask how it was. As a customer, this goes a long way! I challenged myself to try new things I wouldn't normally go for and was greatly awarded. This restaurant's blend of different foods was art. A= Appearance - It was a pretty restaurant with good mood lighting. They dimmed the lights around 6pm and had nice background music playing. T= Taste - For the appetizer, we got the chef slider of the week which was a buffalo blue cheese slider. YUM!! Not a big blue cheese fan, but these sliders convinced me otherwise! We also got the corn bread. Let me preface with, I do not really enjoy cornbread (mainly because I grew up having boxed cornbread and always thought it was dry), however, this cornbread was not the case! It was freshly homemade with a crystalized sugar topping. I love when I receive a great food recommendation from a waiter! He recommend I get the chef special salmon because it was freshly caught and topped with delicious chutney and pureed potatoes. Met a group of old friends from high school here for lunch right after the holidays. We had reservations so we were seated immediately. Our waiter Trey was amazing. I enjoyed my food. I ordered the Blackened Salmon sandwich with fries. I loved my drink, which was the Mulled spiced sangria. You could get it hot or cold. I tried it cold and loved it. I'm pretty sure it would be just as wonderful hot. There were mixed reactions to the other dishes that were ordered. Those that ordered the fried chicken meal really enjoyed it. They also said the shrimp and grits were good. One friend didn't care for her salmon entrée. She said it lacked seasoning. My other friend didn't care for the sauce on jambalaya pasta. A friend recommended the chicken at the The Brass Onion, so we had to give it a try. First, the place is very big and the staff is very attentive. I got the 3 piece chicken meal. It comes with mashed potatoes and gravy and collard greens. The chicken was excellent. Very moist with a real good outside coating. So, by now you are probably looking at my food picture and saying those are the weirdest mashed potatoes and collard greens you have ever seen. There is a very good reason for that, I am not a fan of mashed potatoes or collard greens. However, I could easily swap out different sides. So, I went with french fries and roasted vegetables. These were both outstanding. The fries were nice and crispy and the roasted vegetables were nicely cooked with good seasoning. Some of the best sides to go with the best chicken I can remember having. Also, it came with a really moist piece of cornbread and butter. Again, really good stuff. There was a lot of food on the plate. I chose to finish the fries and vegetables, since they do not reheat as well and brought home a piece of chicken. We also got a burger and fires. This is the best restaurant in the area. I could eat their gumbo everyday. They make my favorite scallops , but they also have fun rotating weekend features. Their seasonal cocktails are amazing and the service is always great. I cannot stress how delicious this restaurant is. I've ate there three times now the gumball is really excellent. I love the fried chicken, my girlfriend, my brother and his wife all went there for my birthday. The dining experience was really good. We were met by Miss Lizzy and she sat us in a booth away from the front door. She presented the menus and the specials and made several delicious recommendations . The ambience was quite because we arrived before 5pm. By the time we left, the place was busy with a hungry clientele. We ordered the dueling hummus with grilled veggies for an appetizer. This dish did not disappoint, one side was the usual chickpeas while the other side was made from black eyed peas. What a treat. Compliments to the chef's creativity. On to the main dishes, I ordered the Shrimp and grits and it was tasty, the gravy juice and delicious cornbread made this meal a star with nice jumbo size shrimps. My lovely wife had the crab cakes and they were cooked to perfection with an onions base veggies and a delicious side of Cajun remoulade, Champaign vinaigrette. Amazing. My first time being here for brunch and out of all Sunday's it was super-bowl Sunday lol. I was definitely impressed with the brunch menu. You definitely get your bank for your buck here. I had the steak and eggs with egg whites and a piece of cornbread 10/10, price was $23. The mimosas are $5 during brunch, choices of juice cranberry, pineapple, and grapefruit juice. I tried the cranberry flavor, I never seen cranberry or grapefruit as an option for mimosas so that was a plus for me. Their drink menu for brunch is really good it's something for everyone. After an afternoon at Prairie Fire, we went to the Brass Onion for lunch. They were only serving the brunch menu, so we had to pivot. I had the two piece fried chicken with potatoes, cornbread, and collards. The gravy was excellent, collards were incredible, and chicken was alright. It was nicely brined but not the best fried chicken I've ever had. My partner had the gumbo and a side of grits. Both were very tasty and he finished the bowls. Our nephew had the kids mini burgers and fries. For a kids meal, it was very substantial, and he appreciated the fry basket look. We split a decadent cinnamon roll. Had both the French Bottoms Old Fashioned and the Black Irish Old Fashioned. I have heard good things about this place so that may have been flukey, but members of our group mentioned that it often takes a while for service when they are busy. In terms of the food, they serve elevated versions of southern comforts classics - and they are delicious. I ordered the Low Country Mac and Cheese and loved it. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the sauce was flavorful and creamy, and there were just the right amount of accompaniments with lots of shrimp. The others enjoyed their meals too and the appetizers for happy hour were fun and easy to share. I ordered their grits and shrimp special. While my friend had their traditional chicken dinner. Price wise it was kind of pricy. Each entree was at least $20 and above. The portion size was small and that was all you get. No bread or house salad or and sides. We also shared a flourless chocolate torte. It was rich and chocolatey. When I think of the best place to meet a friend(s) in southern Overland Park, I think of Brass Onion. It's one of, if not the, most aestheticly pleasing places you'll go. The food is excellent. They might have the best burger in the city. It's perfectly seasoned and seared, with a thicker patty for the juice to get loose. Everything is solid, the gumbo is great, the spinach artichoke, the burnt ends, you really can't go wrong. They have a wide variety of cocktails where everyone should find one they love.
