Wow, this place was amazing. First off, the staff were so friendly and welcoming. They had good suggestions and helped navigate the menu for a first-timer. We got the roasted chicken and it was the perfect balance of toasty on the outside and moist on the inside. It came with rice and a selection of sauces (ginger cilantro and sriracha ). This was so delicious. We also got the fries and they were tasty, crispy and unique. Not your typical fry. Looked like a mini sculpture, almost too pretty to eat. There is ample seating and they have a cool little bookshelf with books and board games. Love the concept! They also have a wine dispenser. Didn't try it this time, but up for the challenge next time. Also don't skip the pickles, they are magical in every way. Homemade with lots of love and flavor! There are a couple seats outside the door too. Best after the donuts, is the rotisserie chicken. Better if you eat the skin! The tenders came bigger than expected but also dry. Didn't care much for the sauces, don't tell the chef but we went home and used the good old honey mustard You get rice and a couple of sauces. Alright, I'll be honest--I've given Thai Bird three separate visits to give it a fair shot. I've tried a range of items: the chicken, donuts, fries, curry, pad thai, and even the hummus. In my opinion, the standout items were the donuts and the hummus--they made for great snacks. Unfortunately, the entrees didn't leave much of an impression. The flavors felt flat, and even with the added sauces, nothing really stood out. The pad thai was especially underwhelming--mostly just noodles with chopped chicken that lacked flavor. The curry leaned more toward a light chicken soup than a rich, satisfying curry over rice. I really like the concept of incorporating fried chicken across the menu--it's creative and has a lot of potential. But as it stands, the execution just isn't quite hitting the mark. Great food and amazing service! They have a small-ish menu, but it is pretty diverse. I ordered a two-piece chicken tender and donuts and they were great! I was given sauces with the chicken, but was unsure if I'd like them. I ended up getting a side of their ginger mayo as well, but they were all delicious! As others have said, the food isn't anything *too* special, but gives people with celiac disease and gluten allergies/intolerances so much more peace of mind knowing that everything about the restaurant is catered towards their gluten-free needs. I enjoyed the cinnamon sugar donuts a lot (they'd go even better with some sort of Bavarian cream), but a couple non-gluten free folks tried them and didn't like them. Overall, I had a great experience here and will definitely try to visit when I'm in Texas. The employees were very attentive and even assured me before ordering that everything is 100% gluten free. I stopped by this new place on Broadway in Alamo Heights because I read great things about it. There's very little parking in front of the restaurant and just a little parking space in the back. It shares parking with a few other businesses so parking was difficult to find. The place is small but with a welcoming vibe. I ordered the wings and coleslaw. Service was friendly and fast which I liked. The wings were ok but I loved the flavor of the coleslaw. This place has a healthy selection of beers and wines in addition to a wine club. Apparently they are having comedy events as well which I will likely return to check out. read more

Yummy chicken counter service restaurant with both fried and roasted chicken options. We tried the family chicken tender meal which comes with rice, your choice of two sides, and pickles. The sides we chose were the fries and the kale slaw at the cashier/cook's recommendation. The sauces they have are also very unique - one spicy, one citrus, and one tamarind. The chicken itself is seasoned really well and we were surprised at how unique and tasty everything was. Great spot to try something new outside of your usual chicken tenders. We love Thai Bird! We've been to both locations, but the Alamo Heights location is our favorite. The owner is wonderful and very friendly to answer any questions you may have about the menu. My SIL is gluten and dairy free - and I love how this place has something for everyone! I usually order the tofu (which is AWESOME since it's so hard to find vegetarian options in many restaurants) and the tofu is SO good and crispy. I prefer to get the salad and sub the chicken for tofu, it's so good! The sides are great as well - the seasoning in the fries makes them addictive. I'd also recommend joining the wine club! The once a month "pick up parties" have a fun, casual vibe and they bring in a sommelier to try different wines from around the world. I appreciate how they are usually natural wines with such a depth of flavor profiles and are so unique! Oh boy, where do I start? Usually when we prep for a trip I research and call ahead asking about food allergies. When I spoke to Chef over the phone I felt at ease about coming here. Both the Fried and Roasted chicken was free from ALL of my little ones food allergies. So good we came here twice. After the first bite of the tender, gluten free or not, this is top tier fried chicken. The Roasted Chicken was just as good, if not better. It's difficult to make chicken breast juicy so you can tell this place has some experience and technique. For sides, we ordered the pickles, corn, fruit salad and kale salad. I'll try the fries next time. The pickles had a strong but manageable and tasty vinegar burn to it. Corn I thought could use some salt but adding yourself never hurt anyone. Fruit salad was refreshing. Kale salad was my favorite, dressed well, not drenched, crunchy and refreshing. All of their dipping sauces are top tier also. I couldn't decide a favorite between the Tamarind, ginger and the sweet/sour type sauce. Owners are dope. Staff is knowledgable and vibes are definitely there. 11/10, would come back. read more

We visited Thai Bird for the first time today and overall had a really good experience. The chicken tenders were decent on their own, but the sauces definitely made them better and were great for dipping. The whole chicken was the standout -- very well seasoned, cooked perfectly, and super moist. You could definitely tell it wasn't dry, and the sauces paired really well with it. The rice was a little dry, even with the chicken juices, but it's just white sticky rice so it wasn't a big issue. The ambiance was modern and cozy, and since we visited during Christmas, the decorations were a nice touch. Some tables are a bit small, especially for a family of four, but nothing major. Service was good -- our server checked on us a couple of times and we didn't need anything else. Overall, a solid spot and we'd definitely come back. read more

It is such a treat to find a restaurant that makes gluten free fried chicken tenders. It is even more than a treat when you find a place like Thai Bird that has wonderful service and absolutely delicious food. I almost nudged my child off his stool and diverted his attention with a card game to eat the chicken tenders he was trying to eat. I admit it. You truly only need one tender per person as they are HUGE and juicy and crispy and perfectly seasoned and just joy. I love the crunch. So much crunch and I do not know what magic sauces came with them, but hands down it was the best tender I've ever had. I then ate a piece with their kale salad/slaw, and oh my goodness the kale was so soft, the dressing was a little tart and sweet, and I truly could just eat that salad with a tender every day for the rest of my life. Top that off with such a wonderful staff. So informative, and it is great to feel safe when eating food. She was just so friendly and patient, and I just knew if the service was this fabulous, the food would be excellent too. I cannot wait to come back to try their rotisserie chicken too! This restaurant was not really what I was expecting, in a good way! I'm not typically a curry person and I wasn't aware that the chicken had a strong curry flavor, but it was delicious. All the sauces were really good as well, they definitely lean on the sweet side. Had a spectacular dining experience at Thai Bird. I never knew gluten free could be so good. The roasted chicken was succulent. The fries with the dipping sauce beats ketchup, hands down. The food was good, just ok. We ordered the hummus, chicken tenders and their special red curry chicken. The chicken tender sauces were underwhelming and the chicken in the curry was kind of chewy, there was more corn than chicken. When the server brought our food they didn't get us napkins or silverware and pointed to a station by the register for us to go get them. I know that was a self order restaurant but that was not very service friendly (after tipping 18% on their iPad) I think we paid close to $60. This is a well thought out restaurant concept. Small, but accessible menu with almost all of it strong offerings where anyone could find something they liked. The chicken was perfect! The skin was incredible and portions large, don't get me started about how amazing the dipping sauce was! The tofu dish was simple, full of flavor, and perfect, again the dipping sauce!!! I am so excited Thai Bird has opened on Broadway in Alamo Heights. My family has been avid fans of Thai Bird since being introduced to it in Make Ready Market, and we were thrilled to stop by today to welcome them to their newest location. The rest of my family enjoyed their usual tenders and rice while I partook of the salad, which was a new one for me - it had kale, mango, chicken, and other yummy ingredients and was absolutely perfect. I discovered that the chips served on top made for an excellent salad delivery vehicle. I also always enjoy their wines on tap. I've had a wine card for awhile and today treated myself to a small pour of a nearly $200/bottle Cabernet Sauvignon and then switched to a delicious red from Uruguay at the recommendation of the owner. We wrapped up our meal with mini donuts which were a lovely treat, especially for my husband who can't typically have donuts (these weren't wheat-based and he can't have wheat). The decor was great as was the atmosphere and the staff was so very kind. We are so happy to have you here Thai Bird! Here's to many more meals with you! read more

We discovered this spot while we were visiting San Antonio recently. We were in the mood for fried chicken and thought this was worth a try when it popped up in the Yelp search results. We are so glad we tried it! It's set up primarily for takeout, but we ate on one of the few tables in the restaurant. We ordered a platter of 5 tenders with the accompanying sauces & pickles, fries, and coleslaw. Delicious! Each tender was big enough to satisfy one person. The batter had a distinct flavor from the lemongrass. The ginger pickles were my favorite thing. Who would have thought that adding sliced ginger to pickles could make them taste so good? The pickles and kale slaw made a nice counterpoint to the tenders. We also enjoyed trying the accompanying sauces. The thai siracha was my favorite. This place proves once again that if you focus on a small menu and do it well every time, then you can make wonderfully delicious food. I hope that a similar concept comes closer to home. read more

Honest review: DRASTICALLY overpriced. $50 for a meal that's says it feeds 4 people, I almost of it myself (195 male). The rotisserie chicken was good, well seasoned and very different than any other places around. Kale salad was really tasty. The corn was very overcooked and kinda gross. Their supposed highlight- their tenders mad little to no salad and bland. I love fried chicken and I threw away 2 out of 3. Pickles were good. Lemongrass tofu was NOT worth $17, it was soggy and tasteless. Overall, we will not be going back which sucks because I love Thai food and had high hopes for this place. Overall bill was $82 which had an additional $3 charge for dining in... never had I seen a surcharge to eat at a restaurant. read more

I love Asian fried chicken, whether Thai, Korean, or otherwise. The lighter, crispy coatings tend to let the flavor of the chicken shine through. Setting aside my wonder at the fact that American consumers seem to have bought in to the marketing pushing chicken breasts (tenders) rather than thigh, and I can say that Thai Bird fries up a very tasty piece of chicken. I was underwhelmed by both of the sauces though. Neither had a good vinegar kick to contrast with the chicken. It's a pretty neat looking place too and the serve yourself wine machine is cool. BUT, in my mind, $16 and change for two tenders and some rice and $5 for a 2 ounce wine serving is just a little too precious. read more
