The food was good. I like the decor and the ambience of the restaurant. The service also was good. I will go again...

Red Curry

Cool ambience and good service, especially for a big group of us! I really enjoyed the apps but I was bummed there were no N/A options. I ordered the red curry and sort of wish I went with a noodle dish instead. The curry was ok but not the best. It felt like there was a little too much coconut milk in it but maybe it's because I asked for it mild.

Thursday night in Newton took an unexpected turn as Buff's wings spot was jam-packed with an hour-long wait. Enter Plan B: a charming Thai gem we spotted off the bus, delightfully empty. Asian food always wins. The restaurant's interior was a visual treat, and the staff radiated warmth. The food, undeniably solid, came with a slight price tag and an extra charge for rice-- a perplexing concept for me. Yet, they worked wonders with a dish that featured eggplant, a dish I usually approach cautiously depending on whose cooking lol. All and all solid place with a really welcoming and considerate staff. What we got Beef saignon Veggie Rolls Pork Ginger Purple Dress beef Prices $$ Food 7 Atmosphere 7 Service 7

The Thai food here is pretty good. It is slightly above average since the flavors are good. The flavors are familiar but not wow. This is still solid for Thai food if you are local around the area. The portion size is in the smaller side and I wish they added some sort of vegetables in the Pad Thai. The beef and broccoli is standard as well. Overall, this is still a pretty solid place for Thai food.

I came here with a friend for lunch and there was a lunch menu lunch is around $16 depending on what you order. I had a tamarind duck which was delicious and tried the mango curry which was meh since the chicken was chewy,, and the mango sticky rice is divine! But of course I came at the tail end of lunch. They have a way of telling you to go after they had to hurry my sticky rice because the kitchen was closing at 3 PM but as we were about to pay the bill, I was in deep conversation, I asked the server if we could stay a little longer even though we're not gonna order anything, but she didn't really answer the question directly. She said that all the kitchen is closing...fine! And the lights were shut down. Upon leaving the restaurant, my friend and I saw one of the cooks lie down with his smart phone watching a movie on the waiting room front couch as if he was in his living room, barefoot and all. Oh well.

Tamarind Duck Dinner

This place should really have 5 stars. As a self proclaimed Thai food connoisseur, I have been here SEVERAL times and the food is consistent, flavorful, and executed gracefully. The classic Thai noodles here (pad see ew, pad kee mao, pad thai) are packed with authentic flavor. Portions are excellent. They have a variety of interesting entree dishes (chicken, duck, beef etc). I have tried several and they are always excellent and complimentary. I highly recommend the fish fillets. So crispy and seasoned well. The sushi here is also amazing. Fish quality is fresh, smooth, and fatty. Large, open space perfect for families or get togethers. Ambiance is relaxing with jazz playing in the background. Service is also great, waiters are attentive and kind. Such a hidden gem in Newton!

Pad thai with shrimp

I came here with my parents for dinner. There was no wait when we arrived. This place was a childhood favorite of mine, so I was pumped to come back. We ordered shrimp pad Thai, chicken yellow curry, and crispy rolls. The pad thai wasn't bad - the portion size was very small for the price. There were very few pieces of shrimp, which was very disappointing. The chicken yellow curry also wasn't great. There were maybe ~5 small slices of chicken in there, which isn't a lot. The dish was mainly just onions. The curry, itself, was very thin and watery. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way, but I wasn't a huge fan. The rolls were pretty good! I loved the sweet chili sauce that comes with it. I drizzled a little of the sweet chili sauce on the pad thai, since the pad thai wasn't that flavorful. The waitress we had wasn't friendly. She never smiled once and seemed very grumpy the entire time we were there. She also wasn't very attentive. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with my experience here. One of my parents swore that we weren't coming back. We used to come here a ton while I was growing up (and I loved this place a ton back then) but apparently they changed management... maybe that's why the quality went down. I doubt I'll be back.

Artery blockage

Yikes, need a cleanup on aisle 5... we have a massive oil spill. See pictures for how disgustingly soaked those pad Thai noodles were... and that's from just the amount of noodles that remained! I felt sick after eating over half, and then realized why when I tilted the container. Also, I've never been charged for chili paste at any other Thai restaurant (a microscopically small to-go cup at that). I know times are tough but that's just nickel and diming.

Back then, they were a normal-style restaurant (similar system to Panda Express). After that first time, I quickly became a repeat customer because of their catfish, pork soup, and the crispy pork. Just those three were sufficient and then several months later, they became a buffet-style restaurant. I was elated. They experimented with other dishes but the crispy pork remained my favorite. No matter what dish they make, all of them were infused with strong flavors and mouth-watering aroma. It is truly a tragedy that this restaurant closed. Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1.5/2): The people here were incredibly courteous and kind whenever they served us. Wait-time can be rather long ever since they converted to a buffet-style but somehow they still manage to keep the restaurant clean and well-kept. Price (1/1): Even back when they were NOT a buffet, their price were very reasonable for the amount of food they give. That positive is multiplied so many times once they transitioned to buffet-style.

You had as appetizers spring rolls, crab Rangoon, 2 different soups and close to a dozen plates.....vegetarian, chicken, beef, tofu. We walked into a modest, no frills dining room that feels like a neighborhood staple, with a steady stream of regulars and students who have clearly figured out that this kitchen does something different. The pad see ew is a reliable order and the kitchen handles it well, with the wide rice noodles picking up enough wok char to give the dish the slightly smoky edge that makes or breaks it. The basil fried rice is another strong everyday order, fragrant and well seasoned with a heat level that comes through clearly without overwhelming the rest of the flavors, and the hint of spice carries through each bite in a way that makes it hard to stop eating. Both dishes are the kind of thing you come back for not because they are revelatory but because the execution is consistently solid and the portion sizes are generous enough to make the value feel right. The roti canai is worth ordering as a starter, flaky and well made with a curry dipping sauce that sets a good tone for the meal before the mains arrive. Beyond those three, the larb moo grob is the dish that the restaurant is most known for and the one most worth trying on a first visit, with the crispy pork and the herb forward dressing hitting the kind of authentic Isaan flavor that is nearly impossible to find elsewhere in the city. The Tom Yum and khao man gai are both excellent and worth working into the order if you are eating with a group. Service is straightforward and efficient, with the staff moving quickly to get orders out even when the dining room fills up. The pace is casual and the focus stays on the food rather than the atmosphere, which fits the neighborhood spot energy well. For an authentic taste of northeastern Thai cooking in Allston, Laughing Monk Cafe delivers on the dishes that matter most.

It was very busy but we were able to get a table for two within 5 min. The service was super slow. Took ~20 min for our server to take our order & another 40 min for our food to come. We noticed our server was the only server for all the tables, haha crazy! Here's what we ended up ordering: -roti (w/ potato curry sauce) -chicken wings (w/ spicy garlic sauce) -pad see ew -pla pad kun chai (fried cod fish fillet w/ lemongrass + Chinese celery) -Thai iced tea We tried the chicken wings, the roti, and Thai iced teas at the restaurant & ended up requesting for the rest of our food to go since we were on a time crunch. Thoughts: The pad see ew was delicious! We reheated it later that night & it was flavorful. I would definitely get this again. The chicken wings had good flavor but we found the chicken itself to be very dry inside. Made it difficult to enjoy. I loved the potato curry sauce that came with the roti. Simple but tasty dish. The pla pad kun chai was our least favorite dish we ordered. It didn't taste good at all after reheating. We're curious if we would've enjoyed this more if we ate it at the restaurant when it was fresh? The fish had a very fishy smell & didn't taste like it had been treated with lemon, vinegar, or both. We usually enjoy cod fish & lemongrass but this was a complete miss for us. Lastly, the Thai iced tea was okay. It was a bit too watery for us & we wished it could've been creamier. Overall, I would come back again to give Cha Yen another try. I did like the dishes we tried at the restaurant & perhaps the fish for example would've tasted better if had at the restaurant.

At first, I was…read moresurprised that it was a restaurant cuz it looked more like an old, abandoned service station. I'm glad I didn't judge it by it's outwardly appearance because it was actually freaking tasty!!! The inside is ... also interesting looking. The service was fast but lacking enthusiasm and could have been a little more friendly and welcoming. The first time I tried it was in person ... inside the restaurant. I've tried it 2 more times since ... both UberEats. The first time really blew me away!!! I was ready to give this place 5 stars!!! The flavors were so perfect and unique. The downside was that the portions were extremely small ... like so small, especially for the price. However, it was so good that I ordered it via UberEats 2x after. The first time I ordered it via UberEats, it was ok, but the second time, it was just horrible ... like way too greasy with no flavor. Just grease and oil. For this reason, I give the rating I did. I really need to try it again because I have such hope for this place, but dang ... the consistency is just not there. Please work on portion size and consistency!!! Arriving at 6, our party of 4 received seating immediately; the establishment only had a few other tables occupied (they did have a decent number of delivery orders). We ordered everything to share, I sampled the following: - Sai Oua | $10 - Crying Tiger | $16 - Kra-Pow w/ground Pork | $14 - Drunken Noodle w/Beef | $16 The Sai Oua, a Northern Thai style of sausage, had both strong lemongrass and earthy herbal flavors. This proved quite addictive; the plate emptied quickly. The Crying Tiger, a grilled steak, proved equally popular given the savory marinade's interplay with tangy dipping sauces. The Kra-Pow w/ground pork, an orthodox menu item representing ground pork sautéed with chili, garlic, basil leaves with hot basil sauce over rice, met expectations. The Drunken noodle with beef, another orthodox menu item, this time with sautéed flat rice noodles with egg, basil, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, and onions in spicy basil sauce, also tasted decent. Notably, the spicy sauce actually had some heat and didn't just taste like soy sauce. Overall, I enjoyed everything. The starting 2 appetizers stood out compared to the mains mostly because of the novelty. The portion sized did seem a bit small, but given the quality, I can understand the establishment trying to maintain a certain price point.
