Very affordable spot with solid food overall. I tried the da chick satay and the spicy crispy chick rice, and the chicken itself was easily the highlight, being very flavorful and juicy. Me and some friends stopped by What Da Chick after a sports tournament in the area, and we had a great time! What Da Chick offers chicken and rice bowls with Thai sauces and seasonings. And they knock it out of the park!! The chicken is fried nicely. I got the Crispy Chick Bowl, since I was a bit nervous the Spicy Chick Bowl would be too spicy. I didn't realize the Spicy Chick Bowl isn't too spicy at all, it's just the same chicken with a nice seasoning blend. If I get the chance to come back, I'd definitely get that next time. Service was super speedy--we came in, ordered at the front, were seated quickly, and then our food came out within 5min. The people who greeted us were great! The space was large enough to accommodate a group of 6 during lunch hours with no wait, which was nice. The Thai Iced Tea was great! Thanks Nancy H. for mentioning the two hour parking on Crawford Street! The meters here don't turn off till 8pm. What Da Chick was right in front of me when I waited for the light to change as I came down Nichols Avenue with its plentiful meter spots. I should have called ahead with my order, or better yet, placed it online, to shorten my wait. When I got there, the dining room was full, the ladies behind the counter busy. It turned out the couple sitting at the table underneath the chicken challenge sign were still waiting to place their own orders! Seems only one staffer was comfortable taking orders, as there is a bit of a language barrier. But the tablet quotes your order so you could always confirm it as you go along. I got mine taken and was told it would be 20 min just ahead of some new arrivals from their dinner rush. Twenty minutes was pretty close to accurate. When I got home with my bounty, I found that they had packed it thoughtfully. The two short plastic tubs were knotted in a plastic bag to ward against spills, and the take out plastic cases were firmly covered. Both the roasted chicken rice $12.95 and the classic combo rice (that's poached and crispy chicken $13.95) came on a bed of ginger rice with some sliced raw cucumber for the only vegetable of our meal. (Okay, we cooked up some Brussels sprouts on our own as an accompaniment.) I found their poached chicken just a little dry, but really enjoyed the tender roasted chicken and dark meat crispy chicken, and their deliciously flavored yellow tinted rice. The soup was tasty as well. The only sauce we enjoyed was the sweet chili sauce, and the accompanying ginger sauce and lime tamarind sauce were too spicy for us. The boiled chicken was not too dry and not overly flavorful. You should dip them in the sauces...the brownish spicy one was my favorite. The crispy chicken wasn't KFC-like crispy by any means, but more of a light crisp to it. The chicken was not juicy, and if I had to eer towards one side, I'd say more on the dry side, but it was still enjoyable with the dip. The rice is not traditional white rice. This one is definitely cooked or flavored with some chicken or something. Its got a slight salty comforting flavor. Crispy chicken plate - This is covered above, as its the same exact chicken. Since its not a combo, you do get more crispy chicken than the above combo plate. This one is also $1 cheaper. We enjoyed are 2 lunch plates. The service 5 years ago was also great, the owner came up to me and asked how the food was and took care of me. The decor is still the same from 5 years ago, sticking with the chicken theme. 5 years later, after coming here throughout the years, food quality has diminished, the chicken was dry, not sure how you can do that to chicken thighs. The spicy tamarind sauce is delicious and gives the bland chicken plenty of flavor. I've tried the crispy chicken but it was a bit oiley for my taste. Food (2/2): Amazing Hainan-rice-style chicken. Their variant is more on the ginger-y side of flavors but that is my preference. I've tried the spicy crispy, crispy, grilled, standard--all the combos and I've found that I love their normal crispy the best (all of them are great). The standard chicken is the most "bland" but that is to be expected. A minor disappointment is the occasional lack of consistency. The spicy crispy is too strongly flavored and it masks the typical flavors you'd expect. Grilled is too "healthy" for me, hence the crispy. Provides enough crunch without destroying the original Hainanese flavor, some depth to the meat and complements the aromatic rice best, in my opinion. However! I think the secret star of this place is their daikon soup. I think they should've called it "chicken soup" as it actually has chicken in them! And oh god, this dish is like the nectar of the gods when you drink it right after skiing. The chicken flavor in this soup is so strong it reminds me of the typical chicken-broth soup in my Asian hometown. The daikon is there and actually helps to "clean" the soup, significantly reducing the fatty feeling from the soup. Astonishingly, simply, amazingly delicious and satisfying to drink. This much deserved review came after a short culinary interchange that took place in the professional kitchen. It is quite common during the breakdown of ingredients that either the FOH or BOH would make comments or questions in relation to what is being prepared at the moment. In this case, I was working with braised lamb when one of my favorite servers stopped by and asked what I was working with at the moment. Unsurprisingly, they can't tell if I was working with beef or lamb or whatever red-meat as they only have the menu to decipher from. However, I always do the same thing - remind them to smell the "scent" - even if their noses have not been trained or genetically predisposed to do so. "Chef, what meat would you choose to eat for the rest of your life if that's the only option." (Says beloved server after professing absolute love to lamb upon realizing it was what I was working on). "Chicken, always chicken. I can eat chicken forever because it's the best protein to handle an endless amount of cooking styles, clean in flavour (not overwhelming like salmon or game meats), and simply versatile." His look was one of those types of Eureka moments. Like a lightbulb went off and he wanted more of what I had to say (BOH win moment). But it was this interchange that sparked it all and led to this review. I've been here quite a bit in person and takeout. It should be no surprise as I've always been obsessed with Hainanese Chicken Rice and every derivative of it - including Khao Man Gai. BUT what makes this place really special like all true Thai places is the heart of preparation...and here, the crispy chicken stands out, the sauces are thick and embedded with strong flavours, and the Thai service with the genuineness of familiarity that (pretty much only in Southeast Asia) treats you like a king/queen. Poached Chicken. Yes. Roast Chicken. Yes. Crispy Chicken. Yes. Spicy Crispy Chicken. Yes. Sauces. F*** yes. Soup. Yes, yes, please give me some more and yes.
