I recently acquired a very nice leather briefcase as a gift, that I wanted to use as a handbag. The only problem was that it had a strap which was way too long for my liking and I was afraid that I would have to return it. I decided that if I could find someone who could shorten it for me and make it look as if I had bought it that way, I could be strolling around with the perfect bag . Not really knowing where I would find this certain someone, I turned to Yelp and stumbled upon rave reviews of Texas Custom Boots. Although everyone was talking about how great their boots looked after wards, I figured that if he could do such an excellent job on leather boots surely he wouldn't discriminate against leather handbags. I took it in, he looked it over listened to what I wanted, and told me he could do it in a day. The next day he called me, I came in and he told me exactly what he had done. I was absolutely amazed by his work. The way he Incorporated the shortened strap into the manufacturer's seam was so incredible that no one could ever tell it didn't come from the factory that way. Met with Noel regarding a boot & purse repair. He insured me for his price I'd get a quality fix, conditioning & polish up (bla, bla, bla) which was especially needed on my vintage boots. When I went for pick up on the committed date, the items had not been worked on. The 2nd time I called and the items where not ready but, promised to be completed by another date. On the 3rd attempt, the repairs were being completed while I was standing in the shop. So much for the highly advertised condition & polish job. I brought my duty boots in to get a repair and wanted to get a parade gloss done. He said it would be a hassle to put on a parade gloss and didn't want to do it... Poor customer service. Settled for a quick clean. On the repair they put some type of glue that completely deformed the boot and gave me a half ass answer saying hey I fixed it you want it perfect send it to the factory. It looks worse now then it did before... Never going back. read more

Since my boyfriend, Travis, never writes reviews on yelp I will write one for him, because this place is worth it! We have been looking for over 6 months for a vintage pair of size 13 men's boots. We have found some boots but none that were worth their asking price and none in the right style. We searched high and low and went all over town. Finally one fateful Saturday we drove past Texas Custom Boots, having never seen it before, we quickly hit the brakes and went in. This place has a great vibe. It felt like an old style boot shop with a big open garage and tops of boots lining the floor and shelves and boots being worked on right in front of your eyes. It was hard to tell which boots were being worked on and which were for sale, but the owner quickly pulled out his 2 pairs of size 13 boots. Nope, not exactly what we were looking for. But then he remember that a pair of boots had come in the day before, still in the original box, size 13. AND IT WAS MAGIC. Those were the boots for Travis and me and they fit him like they had been custom made. They were priced just right as we both knew that the same boots would cost 2xs that price at Allen boots. He has been wearing them every day since. The owner was a real big help and I enjoyed exploring this great boot store. I've been using Texas Custom Boots to resole and repair my boots for at least 15 years. I bought one pair of used boots from him to add to my collection and they have become my favorite. I know he has resoled one pair at least 4 times. Noel is always friendly and usually remembers me even though he only sees me once or twice a year! I used Austin Shoe hospital once before I found Texas Custom Boots and wound up with a 4 inch cut on the sole of my foot from a misplaced nail and they refused to even fix the boots, or acknowledge that I was physically hurt. Texas Custom Boots does fantastic work and my boots always look like new when I pick them up. It does take them time to complete work, but his estimates of time are usually accurate, they just have that much work, which is a statement! read more

Call before you go. I looked at their store hours on this site and their own website, it stated open 9-2 on Saturday's. I drove all that way passing 3 other boot repair places and they were closed with no signs stating that they would be closed. They may do good work but update your website. I went to Austin Shoe Repair on Oltorf who also had high ratings. My boots will be repaired by Wednesday and at a very, very reasonable price. read more

This is the only place I'll take my boots for repairs. Noel's shop is capable of making high class 100 percent handmade cowboy boots, so I trust him to repair my handmade boots. The rule of thumb is to have your boots repaired by the folks that make them (as for handmades) but the small shop in Mercedes Texas that made mine is now defunct. So I trust Noel to do a great job and he did. Noel know's boots and quality and wont turn his nose at any project you give him. He also has quite a bit of vintage boots at great prices. Noel repairs custom handmade boots by some of the best boot makers in Texas. People taking their high dollar stuff here obviously know boots and trust Noel to take care of them. He has also taken time from his busy day to talk boots and I appreciate a good boot talk whenever I can get one! read more

Noel took great care of my lizard ropers. They're nothing special, but they are special to me. I left them pretty beat and badly in need of new heels and soles, and I got them back better than new. Just beautiful work and worth every bit of his fee. I cannot recommend Noel more highly. NOTE: He's moved to South First, north of La Reyna and south of El Mercado on the other side of the street. Much better parking. Noel also said he's planning some performances in the garage space attached to his building on First Thursdays. read more

Took my Dan Posts in with the bottom soles worn and torn. They did a great job, cleaned them up with all the nicks and scratches I had. Maybe too new because they are a bit tight and I will need to wear them to stretch them out again. Quick work. No nonsense. Will be on my short list for future repairs. Just got my boots back from Noel after having them resoled and they look absolutely beautiful. The new soles are much higher quality than the original ones, and it's obvious that the job was done with both craftsmanship and tender loving care. This is the second time I've bought my boots in to Noel's shop; the first time he replaced the heels, again with better quality materials and better craftsmanship. When I buy my next pair of boots, I'll buy them from Noel; that way, I'll get the best right off instead of having him replace second-rate materials and workmanship (word to the wise: don't buy from Heritage). read more

Extenuating circumstances left Noel short-handed while my boots were in the shop but that did not detract from the quality and, after all, I did get them back before I actually needed them AND he shined them up for me too. Noel did a great job resoling my favorite boots. He charged about the same as it would have cost to send them to Lucchese, and they look like better soles than originally came with the boots. I would not hesitate to suggest this place for any boot repair, but be prepared to wait. It seems like he stays pretty back-logged. read more

no complaints here. very straightforward boot shop run by a very helpful and straightforward guy. i was given some old boots that needed heel repair. took 'em here and the owner (forgot his name) gave them a once over diagnoses. the soles are a little thin, which he noticed. he had every opportunity to upsell me on some sole repair, but instead told me they had some life left in them and i can deal with that later. i appreciated that. anyway, he offered to get them done in a day but i wasn't in a hurry. instead he finished them up in about 4 days. when i picked them up, he had done a fine job on the heels and had totally cleaned them up and oiled and polished them. my hand me down boots are just about good as new, and the whole thing cost me about $30. furthermore, even though he was running the shop alone and had plenty of work to do, the owner was more than happy to hang out and patiently answer all my amateur questions about leather care. he even inquired about my upcoming europe travels, etc. good guy. good work. good price. on a side note... i didn't look around too thoroughly, but he seemed to have alot of restored vintage boots around for sale that looked good and were reasonably priced. probably a good place to find a good used pair. highly recommended. read more

I have a very good pair of Nocona cowboy boots, about eight years old and hardly worn because my dancing days were put on hold. When you are retired and don't wear boots or leather shoes much anymore, in favor of sneakers, your feet tend to change size. In short, they become wider because sneakers don't have the support good leather has. I decided to take up a little bit of Country Western dancing again. Lo and Behold! It turns out those great boots of mine were suddenly a little to narrow for my feet. Yikes! Talk about aching toes. I didn't want to buy or trade up size wise, so I went to Texas Custom Boots down on 1st Street in Austin and realized right away that I was in the hallows of a true craftsman. Noel, the owner and craftsman, was surrounded by ancient and venerable motors with brushes, knives, wheels, belts, and forms, and used boots, handmade boots, and oils and tools, and breathe deeply here - the intoxicating smell of leather. He invited me to come on back and talk while he finished up on an urgent dye job on a pair of boots. Embarrassed that I didn't know enough to know if my question was going to sound stupid, I asked if it were possible to widen a pair of boots. Whew! Well it turned out that it not only could be done, but he was the guy who knew how to do it and how to do it properly. I had to believe that a man who crafted custom boots by hand must know what he was talking about. I am given to understand that you could be the Xth number of person in line there and wait your turn, which is irritating to anybody who is satisfied with the quality of McDonalds in favor of speed. But that is not me, nor is it anybody who deserves the services of a master. If you're that Xth person, just be patient. It is worth it. If you're in that big a hurry about something as personal as your feet, you shouldn't be there. We worked out the details; he said the boots would be ready in 3 or 4 days. After 5 days I called, not to pressure him, but just to insure that he had my correct phone number. Ah, yes, here they are and they are done; come on down and pick 'em up. I could not believe how little he charged me. Now folks I'm going to tell you, if you want old old boots repaired, or new new boots made for you, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars, go straight to Noel at Texas Custom Boots and let him have his way with your boots. I guaran-friggen-tee that they, and you, will be the happiest boots and boot owner on the planet. read more

I had just purchased a pair of 1883 Lucchese ostrich skinned boots and had worn them once when my 5yr ole German Shepherd decided to consume the upper of one of my boots. I called the Lucchese Factory in El Paso and asked if there was anything that could be done. After sending several photos to their customer (what a joke) service department, they apologized and said there was nothing that they could do for me ... Really ? I called and spoke to Noel at Texas Custom Boots and was told " bring the boot in and we'll see what we can do with it " ... Yes !!! So I usually get my boots reconditioned once a year. Last time I went to Austin Shoe Hospital and they didn't do a very good job I had some scuff marks on the tips of my boots and they didn't even recondition my soles! They charged me $30 at Austin Shoe Hospital just for reconditioning and so I found TCB and Noel was friendly and knowledgable he will tell you exactly what needs to be done. He said my heels were worn out so I got them replaced plus reconditioning for $50. To me it was very reasonable and I don't mind paying a little more to have great quality craftsmanship. In the end my Lucchese boots came out looking amazing as in looking brand new. Will for sure be coming back next time. read more

Absolutely terrible series of experiences here that involved them re-doing my favorite pair of boots several times, losing said boots in their inventory, and complete lack of communication throughout the process. Long story short, my initial repair broke immediately and needed to be redone, they held onto my boots for a total of nearly 4 months, and they were serious jerks about it all... I have used Texas Custom Boots for all of my vintage boots and shoes for over 15 years after two recommendations from a vintage clothing shop and a very successful vintage boot dealer. Noel and his craftsmen always do a fantastic job on them and have reasonable prices for the work that they do. He has even done second resoling on a couple of my shoes, allowing me to keep wearing and using my favorite 1950s shoes. Yes, he takes a while to do them (because he has a ton of business from knowledgeable clients), but it is worth it. I have tried other shops and nobody comes close. If you just want a simple job putting a little fix on some new shoes and you are in a hurry, go to someone else, but if you have valuable vintage shoes and boots, there is no other place I would ever use or trust. I took my husband's Lucchese boots to Texas Custom Boots. They are his favorite shoes so they had quite some wear on them requiring a totally new sole, heal and treatment of the leather. I chose this place based off of fellow Yelp reviewers - it seemed to me that they knew their stuff and if you spend a good amount of money to buy your boots in the first place, spending a good amount to maintain them should not be a consideration. I wanted a quality repair to bring the boots a second life. Not only did Noel and his staff totally renew my husband's boots they also got it done in about half the time he had originally told us it would take and did so since I had communicated our need to have them sooner and if it was at all possible to get them done before the requested time. Noel took great care in getting them done so fast and was very pleasant to work with despite the large amount of work orders they have. Quality customer service and quality product. My advice: If you're looking around for a place to take your precious boots to, don't waste your time somewhere else, just go straight to these guys and you'll get a product you'll be happy with. read more

I took my wife's boots in because she had a stain on them and ANOTHER boot store said if anyone can get this out Noel can. Noel worked on this for several days always letting me know how it was going. Unfortunately the stain had already set and there was nothing he could do. But having felt like he hadn't finished what he promised he offered to dye them for free! I haven't seen that kind of customer service in years. Last november when I was in Austin, Noel made a belt for me in 2 days. In February I sent him photos & ordered a belt.....It didn't show up until mid April, and after having asked for a 1" belt for a suit.. it arrived & was thick enough to be a dog collar...and didn't fit the buckle. After chatting with Noel, who said they'd make me up a new one, I sent it back. I finally got hold of them in late June & Jim told me they'd ship it right out express mail. 2weeks later, it still hasn't showed up. 5 month & $200 definitely takes Texas Custom Boots off my favorites list :-( read more
