Visited Austin on a quick 24 hour trip, fell in love with a pair of boots from Heritage... the owner explained the vintage design and was very helpful. Updating my original review to share that one year later, I still ADORE the first pair I bought and to say that I went back to Austin for a very quick work trip. I went directly to Heritage from the airport! This special little spot just keeps getting better and better. The moment you walk inside you smell the lovely scent of quality leather....you hear fun vibe tunes (I think Johnny Cash was on when I first arrived) and you're greeted and cared for by super cool people who just want you to love your experience in their shop. Amazing selection of truly unique boots. They are simply gorgeous. Like little pieces of art conceptualized and executed by true craftspeople who love what they do. My only complaint is that there were so many to choose from....so....um......I may have gotten...3 more.....and I am so happy to have them. I know they will just get better with age and wear. I visited Heritage Boots last weekend to select my 1st pair of boots. The salesperson (can't remember his name but he works the comedy circuit at night) was awesome. He asked a bunch of questions and after trying on a few pairs, I picked some out that I've been very happy with. I walked out the store with them and haven't looked back. They are so much more comfortable than I thought and they look like they will hold up well. Really appreciate a place like this that will take the time to help someone find exactly what is needed. Great staff and great boots. Having read through reviews before writing mine it's interesting to see either five stars or one star and none of the one stars seem to have bought or worn the boots. All I can say is the these days unique 'old school' personal service is much appreciated by myself. I certainly appreciated the assistance in finding the right size, the buttery feel of the boots, the styling and the long term comfort and wearability has been superb. After my first visit to the store I'd have liked to have gone back, thought sadly was not able, and yes the wait for a pair the I fancied that wasn't in stock was long. But don't we say good things come... I'd like to thank all the staff for staying in touch, sharing dog stories as I waited and now just completing my first purchase by phone. Always thought this place sold foo foo boots but I was wrong. My wife ditched me and I wondered where she was and realized she was in here. I walk in and see boots galore. Some did look fancy like where would never wear on a ranch cleaning a pig pen, but for the dance floor or out on the town, yes. There were a bunch of tourists in here and squeezed my way to the back to see a huge guy, a celebrity - who knows, modeling some cowboy boots in front of a crowd. I scooted next to him to get to a shelf of boots and very good looking lady sitting down gave a weird look. They did not look mafia so did not worry. This place makes their own boots and even will make custom boots to fit your feet. Seems like they are only made with ostrich and cow. They said they don't do any reptiles since they do not hold up well. They have very nice boot designs and interested in a pair. Unfortunately was not ready right now to get a new pair since I was busy exploring new sights on South Congress. The staff is very professional and answered all of my questions. I have been a long time fan of Heritage and will stand by them as the only place I would take my boot business. Yes, they don't want you to walk in there and man handle their boots or slop your Starbucks all over their store while taking selfies. If it pretentious to expect folks to have manners, then you should get me in touch with your mom so we can talk about how you were raised. But back to the boots! Jerry's designs are uniquely beautiful and sold in small runs which is why buying a pair there means you aren't going to see them all over the place. I have several pairs and have never once suffered break in time. I wear them for eight hours shifts at work and still love them at the end of the day. This is not the case for boots I bought back in the day at Allen's. I have learned my lesson about buying big brand boots names which are mass produced. I just received the Tabitha bootie for Christmas and couldn't be happier! The leather is so soft and the lacing and tooling is gorgeous. The sassy zipper on the inside of the ankle pushes them over the edge and I'm in love! I adore the retro yet modern vibe of my boots and can't wait to wear them tomorrow! I feel like when I was little and got new shoes and loved them so much I would have worn them to bed if my mom had let me. If you're a pretentious a--- then this shop is perfect for you. If not, don't even bother. I love boots and own way too many pairs but can't resist getting more whenever I see something unique. I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I walked into this shop and saw a pair with cute horses that I immediately walked over and started examining with delight. I was in the store all of 30 seconds when the employee told me not to touch the boots. She was polite enough but it was the type of polite that comes with undertones of "I don't trust you not to mess these up and you don't look like you could afford to buy them anyway." Don't judge people by how they look. I might be in jeans and a t-shirt but I could afford anything in the store and I might have bought something if my first 30 seconds weren't spent being scolded by the staff. I get it, you don't want people messing things up. How about "Hey, how's it going? Welcome to the store! We'd love to show you everything but we'd prefer to take the boots off our shelves ourselves, so let me know if you want to see any." That's how I would expect you be spoken to if you want a customer to enjoy your store. Simply being told not to touch without as much as a hello and within 20 seconds of entering the store is a perfect way to get me to walk out immediately and come to yelp to leave a negative review. My second pair of Heritage just turned 3, my first 5. They're both only getting better with age, the thing is with the Black Sharks, which I wear 5X more than my Apaches, IS THEY DON'T AGE! They still look amazing even after all these years, miles, and TX dancehalls. This pair is responsible for multiple friends purchasing Heritage. I have client's stopping me in my place of employment asking where I got these they're so dang sharp! Don't waste the money buying something that will start flaking, cracking, or disintegrating in under 2 years but cost the same. These are the real deal and heirloom quality. (My wife owns 3 pairs as well; The Palomino, The Enid, and a suede/turquoise Pair of which I can't recall the name.) Visiting from California and I must say this is by far the most snarky customer service I have ever experienced. I can understand their policies of no photos and get why they don't let people handle the boots, to keep them in perfect condition.. however the way they give that message to someone who has not seen the signs yet, or just walks in, is COMPLETELY rude. They could have a much more polite way of saying it instead of having such attitude. Or maybe mention it softly as soon as people come in..? Anyway...Someone in our group went to take a photo and was quickly reminded of the no photo policy and she put her phone away.. However there was a woman who walked in at the same time as us. She was struck with such awe that she went to take a photo and was quickly snapped at with, "Ma'am, We DON'T allow photos as I clearly just said, and you can see the signs!" She snapped her head around and was so caught off guard, she did NOT hear her when she told us and didn't see the signs right off the bat. Your eyes go directly to the boots! It would have been fine if the sales woman was not so condescending and rude. We actually most likely would have stayed and purchased something if she hadn't been. We even had some locals over hear us while we were walking away from the shop talking about how shocked we were with their customer service. BLASPHEMY! How the hell are there no reviews for this place? Sometimes y'all make me disgusted. Bah! Heritage Boot makes their own boots of the fancy dress cowboy variety. I've never bought any but I would love to own some and if I ever get proposed to I fully intend, as a proud native Texan woman should, to come here and special order some pretty white boots with snakeskin on the toe and butterflies or yellow roses or Texas Stars on the side and maybe a couple of rhinestones along the heel. The boots for sale here are lovingly handmade and gorgeous and you can just tell that a lot of heart went into each pair. I think if you wore some to the Broken Spoke they'd be the talk of the bar all night. Lovely lovely boots. Cute store. Lots of love from the owners who seemed like genuine, nice people. The guy I met did at least. The homemade boots I saw today seem to be about in the $300-$500 range which isn't bad at all for wearable art. Heritage also sells old ornate western shirts and belt buckles - stuff like that. Also, this store is on 8th between Colorado and Congress now, across from the municipal building and catty-corner to the Federal Court so if you're ever in the area you should go check them out. read more

This place is like a museum for boot lovers. It makes sense that they sat don't touch. You wouldn't walk up to a Picasso or a Gauguin and paw them, would you? I am a NYC girl and have (almost) no need in my wardrobe for a pair of cowboy boots. However, I am seriously thinking of adapting my wardrobe and lifestyle to incorporate a pair of heritage boots. Seriously, just walking in and smelling all of that leather, and letting your eyes wander past all of their colorful and intricately designed boots -it's like therapy. I own two pair. The Patty (named for the owner), which is a tall, fancy black boot. I've worn them to so many work occasions - they can really dress up a pair of jeans. My second pair of Heritage boots are the Little Pony peewee boots. So unique and beautiful! I wear these boots everywhere and with everything. These boots are made for walking...and dancing, and working, and horseback riding, and dining out, and going to concerts. They are so comfortable, so much fun and can be dressed up or down! I constantly get compliments on them and people asking where to buy them. Here's the thing with Heritage boots - you are getting what you pay for. The boots are beautiful but the some of the sales people here are horrible. This place is the worst type of hipster where it is super pretentious to the point you feel bad for coming in. I bought a pair of boots here for my boyfriend 5 years ago and he has loved them to the point they are ready for a replacement. We went in to find him another pair and the sale-woman kept cutting us off mid sentence. She kept showing us the boots she wanted to buy for herself which is nice but not helpful. She seemed offended we didn't know boot styles from the 70s and then seemed to determine we weren't worthy of shopping there since she kept asking if we were really there to buy boots or just to look. My group of women was assessed as not worthy of their services or decency as soon as we walked through the front door. Way to treat 4 doctors with such disregard, little boot shop girl! Everyone is treated like a child by being told to not touch any of the boots without assistance. When you are 'assisted', you immediately regret asking. When one of our party tried on some boots that she could FEEL didn't fit her, she was told that she was wrong. WTF?! Apparently not fitting comfortably, is how "cowboy boots fit!" Such bull$h!t I have shopped the streets if LA, NYC, London & Paris and have never been thus treated. The first first rule in retail is to provide customer service, but apparently not if your boots are over $600! Well done, Heritage. Dear Patti - months ago you responded to my review asking me to give your store another try, but then a week ago you deleted it and replaced it with a comment saying that I'm nasty and entitled. I'm confused and am starting to see that the attitude of your staff might reflect the attitude of its leadership. First of all - if paying $400 for a boot and expecting the vendor to fix a perceived problem makes me entitled, then, yes, I'm entitled. I will own up to that. Second - As to the nastiness of my attitude - I'm sure it was frustration, but if it came across as nastiness I apologize. I worked in retail and I never understood why customers would get nasty, and I've made it a rule to always be a respectful customer, so I would hate to think that your staff felt belittled in any way. My apologies if that was the case. To reiterate, in my review I stated that I loved my boots - I wear them all the time. I state that multiple times in my review, by the way. Wow. It's a good thing that I didn't come to this boot store upon first arriving in Austin. I might have based the Texas welcome on their customer care. When I walked in, I was ignored by both two girls and finally approached by the (local) salesgirl, who was helpful. I went to take a photo of a great sign about quality, and was met with a snappy comment from one of the girls about how they don't allow photos. A naive customer reached over to pick up a pair of boots, and was met with a verbal slap on the wrist as well, noting "we prefer if you let us help you with the boots and don't touch them". The customer left immediately, which prompted a conversation from the sales girls about whether or not that person should have been more "self aware" about the signs, and whether or not they were rude. The condescending tone really reeks from a store that doesn't actually MAKE real riding boots. Pros: excellent craftsmanship and pride that shows through the details. I never thought I'd buy a pair of cowboy boots, but by the time the store closed, I was fervidly calling my east coast bank hollering, "LET THE CHARGE GO THROUGH!!". The boots stayed in the store to have a Vibram outer sole put on and I received them today by UPS, a couple hours ago. I could not be more satisfied with my purchase! Alie, who is also from the east coast, comprehensively answered every question I could fire her way, from the provenance of the "snip-toe" to the three different heel styles, leathers, craftsmanship, production times and company history. Believe me, I spend days and nights researching online, but she knew more than any amount of Googling could yield. It's worth visiting just for the service and knowledge, never mind the top-notch boots. Heritage strikes the perfect blend of old-fashioned quality, contemporary boutique shopping experience, and updated urbane fashion sense, all at a price that is affordable. I was expecting to pay close to a thousand dollars to be honest, but I walked out spending just over $400 with taxes and the Vibram sole added. Sure, that's a lot of money, but this is tremendous value. If you can't afford it, go down the street to that other place that sells generic stuff. (BTW it's not cheaper.) Yes, some exotic leathers are imported, and all the boots are made in a Mexican shop carefully managed by Heritage itself, but it makes the appeal broader and price affordable. Additionally, boots can be made to order, but with vague and indefinite wait times, which they made very clear. These boots, which I plan wearing all day and night inside my house for today, and I, were meant to be, that is all! When I found out the owner and I have the exact same shoe size, that was it! It's worth mentioning I quickly browsed the other dross filled legacy store and promptly left uninspired, but when I walked into Heritage Boot, I knew I found "the real deal" and most likely, the best cowboy boots money can buy in Texas. Alie was so sweet when I compared the two stores, she didn't have a single mean word to say, but take it from me, this is the place. I am so lucky to have stumbled in an hour before closing! Their website is current, and the boots' fit are accurate to size number, so I wouldn't hesitate to order online in the future. However, it's clearly a great experience to visit while in Austin. At the very least, call before ordering online. I almost bought a pair of Lucchese boots at a western store in Dallas. It would have been an impulse buy and I decided I'd rather learn a bit about boots before dropping more than just a few bucks on a pair. Searching for "best boots" led me to Heritage Boot in Austin and I quickly found my pair online. Figuring I'd rather buy at the store, I had to wait for my next trip to Austin and had no idea when that would be. A few months hence I headed straight over to the shop when I rolled into town yesterday and let's just say I was delighted. When I first saw the neon boot sign on South Congress I knew I had arrived at my current personal Mecca. This place reeks of high quality, passion for their trade, and the best that Austin, greatest city in Texas, has to offer. The quality of craftsmanship and beauty of everything on the shelf is simply stunning. Couple that with staff (Thanks Jason!) who know their sh!t and how to fit you and it's simply a winning combination. After trying on a few pair I settled on the boots I came in to see in the first place, Black Shark. These boots were just a bit more costly than the aforementioned Lucchese's, a thousand times more beautiful, and of a quality that surpassed whatever I was hoping for in my anticipation. Thanks to all you other Yelpers for the reviews that helped me make my decision to come here. The good reviews are great and the bad reviews confirmed that this would be just the place for me. The sign out front says no photography, so don't take pictures, or at least ask before you do. I wore my new kicks out on the town my first night in Austin and I felt like a million bucks. But I also saw some other customers turned off the way some of these reviewers describe. I knew about the "no touching" policy before I went there (because I read these reviews) but I didn't see any of the sales people even point it out (there are signs everywhere). I did see one women walk in and instantly started touching everything in sight. Her husband pointed it out the signs to her- you could tell it soured her experience and they immediately left. Since I moved back to Texas I've been hankering for some cowboy boots. And not just any, but some that I could wear scootin at the Spoke, to Patty Griffin at Gruene Hall (tomorrow! So excited!) to dinner and then off to fancy meetings in D.C. where I can show off my true Texan side alongside my Ivy league know-how. After searching at Cavenders, and loving some Old Gringos at Allens, I wanted to look somewhere a little smaller. Somewhere that could tell me more than 'oh you want some slip in the heel.' And then I stopped at Heritage today and met Jerry. An Irishman selling cowboy boots to a Vietnamese guy? I'm proud to say, only in Austin my friends. He was clearly proud of his merch, and he showed me the details that go into the boots. Then he pulled out a few great pairs for me to try on. I fell in love with the 4th pair. Ostrich, smooth as silk, and sexy sexy. I was hoping to get something off his sale rack - because dang there are some good prices there. But couldn't get my mind or my feet off the pair I'm wearing right now. So - $450.00 later here I am (not bad when you consider that 12 of Jerry's boots come off the line every day). The quality of materials and service - not to mention the cost (and benefit) of buying local. So, go have some fun at Allen's sure, grab a cupcake across the street.
