Over the last several months I've been decorating a shipping container and Paper Work was the first place I thought of for art. My new space looks amazing with all the different pieces I got from here and I feel good knowing I'm supporting locals rather than Target. I give Paper Work 5 stars when I wish I could give them 10. The staff is amazing, the owner is incredible and I always find something for me or for a gift. If you live in Austin, you should come here more often. If you are visiting, this is the place to shop and buy gifts for everybody who couldn't come to Austin with you.

I'm not sure if the gentleman who checked me out was the owner or a regular employee. Regardless, he did not have a friendly disposition when checking me out. (I am a woman of color for reference) he didn't even greet me which is a simple courtesy. I had to ask him "hey, how are you today" to which he didn't respond and just told me the balance I owed. My fellow friend (white male) checked out right after me and he greeted him! He also asked him how he wanted his items wrapped. (We both had the same items) If the store itself wasn't so nice and full of good merchandise/gifts I would've given it an even lower rating. To management: please know and remind your employees that even a simple hello goes a long way Edit: This seems to be a trend going years back (looking at reviews) with this business and their discriminatory practices. If you have young kids, I wouldn't recommend bringing them here. As soon as we walked in, my two-year-old accidentally stepped in front of the employee, and her reaction was surprisingly rude. She immediately told me she was overstimulated and doesn't like kids in the store. She said he could sit on the couch but wasn't allowed to walk around. I understand setting boundaries if a child is being disruptive, but we had literally just walked in, and he wasn't misbehaving.... just being a toddler. I explained that he's only two and it's not realistic to expect him to sit still the entire time. After that, she gave me a dirty look and continued to stare at us while I tried to shop, even though I kept him right by my side the whole time. In the end, we decided not to spend our money somewhere that made us feel so unwelcome. It was disappointing, especially since we were looking forward to supporting local shops. Just a heads up for other parents this may not be the most kid-friendly place, and you might not feel comfortable shopping there with little ones.
