well! this was an experience! the atmosphere was dark, romantic. booths lined the walls with tables and seats to accompany them. they were very close together. very. so close i could hear the conversations of both neighbors even with all the noise around. the food was tasty! no complaints there. pricier side but i felt the portions and quality were fair. i overheard the menu does change often, due to the local selection, so these options may not be there when you go! the wait staff did make the experience feel rushed and alarming. at one point i was actively eating off a dish that was grabbed and pulled away. sorry but hello? can't take a second to look and see i'm eating? can't take a moment to ask? there is a staff fee that is tagged onto the bill, so i'm not sure if they're told to be Extremely attentive, but it was way too much. the waiter seemed to be busy with many tables so there wasn't much from them, but was friendly when we did interact. overall, good food but the chaotic service and close proximity to others does bring it down. leaning more of a 3.5/5 rating, but sticking with a 3 since i wouldn't make it a Must Eat during a future visit to SF

ordered 3 appetizers and 3 larger plates. overall the food is good. the service is great and our server Rafa was helpful and funny. decent street parking and the area is quite residential. i think the star of the dinner was actually the mozzarella /focaccia appetizer. i wish it came with 1-2 more bread sticks to even out the huge dollop of sauce and cheese. the chicken spiedini was a tad overcooked in my opinion but still tasted fine. not pictured. we ordered the pork shoulder. the moroccan braised chicken (broth like). and the skirt steak. with the exception of the skirt steak, the meat dishes were all a little too soft. no crunches to even out the textures range. i enjoy softer foods but it all started to taste a little similar- which is funny considering we're ordering three different types of proteins, i think. lastly- since it was someone in my party's birthday, and we noted that on the reservation, it would have been nice to receive a little complimentary something. but i'm not going to really look into that one too much because every restaurant is different. i think the main appeal of this restaurant is that it's a good place to have a few drinks (from beer and wine list) and share a few appetizers. i would come here again to do so- but for a birthday, or a more celebratory event, i would opt to try a different restaurant.

Visiting from Los Angeles, this restaurant wasn't far from the hotel and we decided to give it a try. Upon entering, the hostess was immediately attentive and warm and seated us at the bar as we had no reservation for dinner on a Saturday night. The bar is spacious and more than comfortable to have a meal at. Our waiter was just as attentive and was friendly and just had the best vibe! We ordered beets with labne as an appetizer, and it came out quickly and was a delicious start to our meal. We ordered and shared the steak and chicken and both did not disappoint! Both dishes were absolutely delicious! Steak was tender and flavorful, potatoes were amazing and the chicken was just as good, with a creamy sauce over the rice that was almost like a deconstructed rosemary chicken soup. Brilliant! We were only in town for the weekend, but would definitely come back on our next trip. 5 stars for incredible service and amazing meals!

Came here on a Wednesday night for a party of 5 and a doggy. We were able to wait inside with some wine and the Marina Mojito while we waited the last of our party to arrive. We were seated outside and it was intimate since it was just our table. We got the following to share with the table: * Grilled Painted Hills Ranch Skirt Steak with Potato-Leek Gratin, Sautéed Broccoli & Horseradish Chimichurri for $37. This was SUPER delicious! * Marina Mojito with Muffled lemon, fresh mint, passion fruit, ice and soda * Saffron Arancini with Spicy Tomato Sauce (not spicy but tasty), Fontina, Mozzarella & Pecorino for $14 * Sautéed Sugar Snap Peas with Lemon Zest, Butter, Shallots, Urfa, Mint & Pecorino for $18 * Fettuccine with Beef Bolognese, Tomato, Cream & Parmesan but they accommodated our table and made it vegetarian $29/19. Technically this would be a 4.5 but only because two of our friends had plans elsewhere and I was hoping to get dessert but our waitress never came back. My friends husband paid for our meal discreetly after we had decided to pass on dessert due to timing.

Came here during SF Restaurant week. The menu was an incredible deal considering the quality of the food, as well as including a wine pairing for each course. The restaurant itself is tucked away on a not so busy street just off of Fillmore and is quite unassuming were you to just walk by it. Our server was really great at answering our questions about the menu and making sure all the courses came out together (we were a group of 6). Seating was comfortable and cozy and there are options for outdoor seating, weather permitting. This definitely seems like a neighborhood spot as I overheard the wait staff welcome regulars and ask them how they were doing and if they were going to get "the usual". Glad we tried it out during restaurant week and would definitely come back

Looking for a nice, predictable, chic restaurant (love the floral arrangements)? This is your place. The service is jovial and candid so I am rounding my 3.5 star rating up to 4. One bummer about this place is that they only serve wine/beer. But the floor plan and ambiance are nice for a date that you're trying to impress or a business dinner with contrasting palette preferences. Apps were good, but not incredible. The hummus and bruschetta were fresh. The meatball was average as the polenta lacked any depth of flavor. For mains, I got the chicken, again it was decent but nothing memorable. The flavors could be a little more dynamic and bold. Overall I recommend but this spot won't blow your socks off.

What a phenomenal SF Restaurant Week! The menu is creative with fresh ingredients (seasonal highlights too). Would certainly recommend on food alone Grilled Persimmon Bruschetta (regular menu) 5/5 - delicious caramelization and the bread was crispy. Ordered the prosciutto on the side Zucchini carpaccio (RW menu app) 5/5 - fresh and nutty and so good with the manchego Fried Brussel sprouts (RW menu app) 4/5 - solid charred flavor but some were a bit soft and over cooked Butternut squash risotto (RW menu entree) 5/5 - creamy and nice texture with soft butternut squash chunks Braised beef brisket (RW menu entree) 4.5/5 - generous portion of beef that was so tender. A little bit salty and the veggies were slightly over cooked but overall still delicious Almond cake with whipped cream (RW menu dessert) 5/5 - soft and flavorful without being too sweet or overpowering. Almond flavor was nice Vanilla bean rice pudding (RW menu dessert) 3.5/5 - not pictured but average flavor and not too much vanilla bean. Had a couple cherries to accompany I came to celebrate a birthday and it was a lovely upscale spot. Staff was very friendly and even towards closing did not rush our meal. What an awesome meal of three courses per person for $50 (and additional three wine pairings for $25)

Enjoyable fare, quick service and enchanting ambience I'm not sure my water went lower than about 3/4 full. Nice place to get a few small plates, the dessert was the winner. Had the whole back room to ourselves. Would go again!

The Space was very nice, some brick walls, not crazy major loud, nice looking bar and space - not over crowded seating. Good for a date. Our waiter kept touching my back which is fine i guess but it was a little much for me. We ordered cauliflower soup, it was really good but we had barely taken two spoons of it when our waiter came by and swooped my friends soup to the trash .. we didnt dare say anything. We ordered those arancini things , beet salad, and mushroom polenta. The mushroom polenta was so good..! My friend had ordered 3 scallops but she was given 4 - not sure what we were charged. The desert chocolate lava cake was very good The drinks were ok - should have had wine

The interior was dimly lit with vibrant, colorful decor. The ambiance was lively, but not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. The Ceviche was a group favorite, and we ended up getting a second order of this - highly recommend. I asked our server what tacos were most popular, and ordered based on that. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the Tuna Tacon, so I got the Taco Tropical. This was delicious! The fried shrimp was perfectly cooked and the flavors worked so well together. The portion size was small (2 tacos), but that was expected. I also tried one of the Carne Asada Tacos, which was less memorable. For dessert, we shared the Flan - so well-executed, one of the best I've had in recent years. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall, I really liked Loló for dinner!

The people were laughing, the drinks were flowing. It smelled really good, which we would later find out was from the food especially that Mac and cheese. We started off with different wines, some that Tom recommended based on what we told him we didn't like or did like. He apologized for our previous experience and was genuinely a nice guy. Honestly it's very admirable for a business owner to take feedback to heart and want to incorporate it. Plus he's a really cool guy when you get to know him. The staff was busy running around but still made time to come check on us. Our final verdict is we came on a bad day. This time we got the actual Waystone experience. We finally got to try the chicken bites with a creamy aioli, fries with yogurt sauce, and the star of the show was the Mac and cheese. Everyone who works here is warm, funny, and present in a way that makes you feel like you belong, whether it's your first visit or your 50th. Live jazz nights here are their own kind of therapy. I once saw a harpist who made me feel like I was floating inside the music. No cover, no pressure, just ridiculously good musicians making the whole place glow. One thing I love: the rotating local art. The walls change every so often as new artists take over, and it completely shifts the energy of the space. You might not love every piece, but that's kind of the point--it's alive, it's personal, and it's supporting real artists in SF. And if you do love something, you can take it home (yep, everything's for sale). Whether you're here for the jazz, the wine, the art, or the people.. waystone shows up with soul. We ordered 3 dishes off the menu - the Red Trout (entree) and 2 appetizers, the Smoked Black Cod Toast and Mortadella Sando. Initially, we had wanted to order a 4th dish as well, but our waiter advised against it because 3 dishes on top of any dim-sum style orders would be a lot of food for 2 people. Out of all 3 menu dishes, the Mortadella Sando and Red Trout stood out the most. The bacon onion jam on the Mortadella was the best part, being savory and creamy without being overly salty. The Red Trout was light and refreshing, served with a citrus side salad and macadamia nuts. While the Black Cod Toast was fresh and excellent as well, the mix of red onions and tamarind curry were slightly too sour for me. I also had to remove the green onion garnish from this one. For the dim-sum style orders, my favorite were the oysters, clams, and golden beet with duck pate. Their oysters and clams were so fresh and high-quality that they had a hint of sweetness to them, and each of their seasonings didn't overpower the natural flavor of the shellfish itself. The golden beet almost didn't taste like a vegetable with how rich and savory the duck pate and pistachio were, and the warm Mediterranean-style spices made this dish stand out from the rest. Personally, I would suggest passing on the pork belly and silken tofu with mushrooms. While the texture of the pork belly was perfectly crispy and soft, the citrus in the sauce was too astringent for my taste. The silken tofu had a satisfying texture as well, although not the most worthwhile to order as it's not a unique dish and would cost a fraction of the price at an actual Chinese dim sum restaurant. The ricotta cheesecake gets its own paragraph because it was that good. Initially, the fennel salad listed in the description seemed suspicious to me, but it provided a vegetal and slightly salty taste which perfectly offset the creamy ricotta and sweet apricot jam. The hazelnuts and burnt sugar provided a fun crunch as well. For a Michelin star restaurant, they are on the affordable side. I do recommend a reservation over walking in, as the line at 5:30 for walk-ins was 30 people deep. Overall, I would come back to State Bird to celebrate future special occasions! This was a fun experience that managed to be casual yet elevated at the same time, and I enjoyed seeing what dim sum dishes other tables ordered.

Really interesting and unique experience - think fine dining food meets dim sum. The ambience…read moreinside is chic, but not overly stuffy. I got a reservation ahead of time and came for a weekday dinner and it was packed! I liked the variety of dishes that they had. We got some heirloom tomato salad as an appetizer and other notable small dishes included the Hog Island oysters, big fluffy garlic knot, cutlet which tasted like a schnitzel and had a really great black garlic sauce on the side, and the clay pot rice with I think some sort of anchovy inside. Overall, food was solid, though portions are small as you might expect for a fancy tapas place. Glad I tried it for the experience.
