The most underwhelming Michelin-star experience ever. If I were you, I'd pass! Statebird Provisions is very unique in a way that they do a tableside cart service for their special dishes, very similar to dim sum, in conjunction with their a la carte menu. They have a permanent menu that you can order, and carts come around to offer smaller bites throughout your meal. What a fun concept! Everything tasted so boring. It was all one-noted and lackluster. You'd have fun dishes like lemongrass clams and pork schnitzel with mole, but where is the execution? Where are the herbs or citrus in the clams or the spices in the mole? I found that every single dish was missing depth and dimension. Even dessert was entirely underwhelming. I think that Statebird is a fantastic, fun concept and has a lot of potential to be a great dining establishment, but everything lacks flavor. I don't think I should go to a Michelin-star restaurant and wonder why their Caesar salad is missing acid or why their pasta entree is missing savoriness. I would not recommend dining here for a special occasion, maybe if you were casually around for dinner and weren't too hungry in case you tried a few bites and decided against a full meal.

Unique American take on Cantonese Dim Sum type service. Small plates are rolled around on carts with prices and diners select what they would like to try. There are typically four rounds of provisions - Snacks, Provisions, Commandables, and Dessert. The first three rounds proceed from light to heavy and I suggest selecting more of the lighter snack items. We had a seven person party and thus needed a reservation for the Alcove section which is a long table on the side that seats 6-8 with an $800 minimum. You are in the restaurant but situated on a side against the wall - still has the noise and excitement of the fully seated establishment. The restaurant selected a 15 course menu for the Alcove consisting of 6 Snacks, 4 Provisions, 3 Shared Commandables, and 2 Desserts. Favorites were: - Snack of Smoked Trout Dip and Chip which had a smoked trout dip having a consistency of guacamole. Free extra chips if needed. - Provision of Pork Belly with an Asian Style sweet and tangy drizzle. The belly was nicely salted and complemented by the sizzle. - Commandable of State Bird which is roughly a half breaded and deep fried quail. I personally like quail just roasted with a pinch of five spice powder - Cantonese style. The breaded fried approach takes away from the flavor of the quail. Go simple with a light salad and tangy dressing and it works better. - Dessert of Shiso Ice Cream Sandwich was very good and didn't need the berry compote. Or maybe a lighter quince compote would work, some bitterness might work?!? We were fortunate to sit on the side Alcove with visibility of the whole restaurant. Tables of two in the middle had maybe a six inch gap between tables. Service was friendly however serving plates were not timely cleared with the next provision brought before the prior plates cleared. We noted that the napkins and last plates were quickly cleared at the end of the meal hinting at no lingering. Overall, there were more misses than hits for this innovative, inexpensive Michelin starred restaurant. Def get the Smoked Trout Chip & Dip, Pork Belly, and the Ice Cream Sandwich. Tables usually turn over in 1.5 hours.

I was so excited to try State Bird after getting a reservation. The ambiance is certainly very lively, loud music and equally as crowded. The restaurant was filled from the beginning with tables crammed next to eachother. The winners were definitely the trout dip and ice cream sandwich. Everything else was okay, or they didn't suit our palates. First, we got the trout dip with chips and WOW.. that was life-changing. It tasted like an elevated sour cream and onion dip. The creamy trout dip paired so well with the long crispy chips. I was wishing we got seconds. It set our expectations a little too high.. Next, we tried the duck liver mousse with the sweet financiers. It was a bit disappointing and didn't mesh well. The duck liver was good, not stinky yet creamy. The financiers were okay, but they didn't seem to harmonize together. The scallop crudo was just unappetizing. It tasted like a jamba juice smoothie. The scallops were incredibly soft and melt in your mouth, but the fruity sauce was really bizarre. It would be better categorized as a dessert. Next we tried the sourdough pancakes they were known for. The sauerkraut powder is essential. Otherwise, I could imagine making this at home. The pancake itself was nothing worthy of a fine dining dish in my opinion. Similarly, the new octopus pancakes are a spinoff of Japanese Takoyaki. They basically tasted like the sourdough pancakes with a piece of octopus in it. However this one was more burnt. The citrus sauce and lime didn't do much to elevate the dish. I would rather have takoyaki instead of this. The pork belly with citrus salad was outstanding, very flavorful and the fat melted easily. I really enjoyed the brightness of the fruit combined with the basil and fish sauce. The state bird dish was quite disappointing. It was heavily breaded. Inside was a bit dry, and the quail didn't really stand out with all of the thick breading. The only thing this dish had going for it was the cheese on top and the delicious onion underneath. The peanut milk was delicious- reminded me of a Chinese New Year peanut brittle candy. The black sesame ice cream sandwich was also wonderful, though heavy on the berry jam. I loved the shiso flavor paired with the black sesame. I would recommend the Guava Soda. I also found the amount of offerings for the dimsum portion lacking. Before we knew it, the rounds had already ended and there were only a few dishes that looked appeitizing to us. I probably would not come back again.

Overall a great dinner spot! 3.5/5. Everything we tried was amazing and I loved how they utilized the dim sum concept of bringing food to your table. You must get the trout dip!! Only beer & wine, but loved the bottle of wine we got. Our server was kind of strange if i'm being honest. Advised us not to take the menu out if we're not going to order - but how do I know if I want to order extra if I don't take the menu out? Also they do not provide a complimentary birthday dessert if you are wondering - just a candle if you order your own dessert. Lastly - parking was very easy on a Tuesday night @ 7pm.

State Bird Provisions is definitely one of the more unique dining experiences in SF. The "dim sum" style service where servers circulate with trays of small bites makes for a unique, interactive meal. We ordered: hog island oysters $5 ginger scallion duck dumpling $6 duck liver mousse & almond financiers $10 garlic bread + burrata $13 pork belly with fish sauce, grapes & long pepper $14 bay shrimp hand roll $16 sourdough-sauerkraut pecorino & ricotta pancakes 4 pc $15 CA state bird with provisions wolfe ranch quail from brent $24 fish collar lemongrass pumpkin 'ice cream' sandwich coconut macaron, chocolate & cashews $15 'world peace' peanut milk muscovado sugar $4 Standouts were the duck liver mousse, bay shrimp hand roll, and duck croquette. The items that we ordered from the printed menu generally felt less inspired and lacked the unique spin/flavor of the a la carte tray dishes. However, each little plate adds up to a hefty bill. I advise skipping the printed menu and saving your appetite and budget for the unique dishes on the passing trays.

Disclaimer: I tend to hold any Michelin-starred restaurant to a higher standard as the expectation of elevated execution and consistency just comes with the territory. So while this might otherwise be a 5-star review (thanks in large part to our amazing server, Tessa) for a family owned SMB, a few small misses make this a solid 4-star experience for me. We managed to snag same-week Saturday dinner reservations, which already felt like a win. The energy of the space was vibrant but relaxed, and Tessa's attentiveness really set the tone as she was warm, enthusiastic, and genuinely thoughtful throughout our meal. If you haven't dined here before, State Bird Provisions runs on a unique concept that's part traditional menu, part roaming dim sum service (although how many dim sum restaurants even use carts these days?). Alongside a printed menu, several carts circulate with an evolving lineup of off-menu dishes, offering guests a chance to sample the unexpected. I love the spontaneity, but I did find myself wishing for a small companion menu listing that night's cart options, just to help plan pacing and avoid overcommitting too soon. Standouts of the night included the octopus pancakes, a fun twist on takoyaki that is flattened but brightened up by a soy-lime glaze; the smoked black cod toast, one of my favorite bites as it is so rich with umami yet beautifully balanced; and the scallop crudo, featuring incredibly fresh scallops cut to the perfect thickness to absorb the guava sauce without losing their own delicate sweetness. The duck liver pâté paired with those addictively good cornbread bites was another highlight, and the gado gado turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the evening, as it was truly a showcase of all of the fresh offerings of the season. Not every dish hit the same high note, though. Some dim sum selections missed the mark on texture and/or seasoning, and the pork belly had quite a bit of unrendered fat that made for chewy, uneven (and at times even unpleasant) bites. Even the namesake fried quail, while having a good flavor overall, didn't quite live up to its "signature dish" billing as I found the breading to be too thick, a bit too flaky, and itself underseasoned. The stewed onion accompaniment was delicious but it couldn't on it's own make up for the aforementioned shortcomings on the quail itself. Tessa's service truly elevated the evening, from her menu insights to the thoughtful touch of bringing a complimentary dessert shot (a peanut milk, I think) when we mentioned we were too full for dessert. All told, State Bird Provisions delivered a creative and engaging meal with flashes of brilliance, even if a few inconsistencies kept it from being truly exceptional. I'd happily come back when the menu turns over for summer to see if they find a more even rhythm across all their dishes.

We came in to celebrate a milestone birthday and were not disappointed from the care on the menu stamps to the explanation and service we were wowed. I suppose it depends on the season of your visit but we loved everything especially the quince horchata, and inclusion of persimmon. I loved the world peace milk, and the desserts really stole the show. I liked how it was no pressure dim sum style and that allowed up the chance to try a lot of different things. We left our 1 Michelin experience at around 100 pp, which felt like more food and selection than what we might have gotten at a similar place.

Eeek didn't want to do this but it truly was just ... OK. This spot being a 1 Michelin star, I was truly expecting some more innovative dishes! Concept wise, it was pretty cool how they have dim sum style carts rolling around, allowing you to pick what you'd like. But most of the dishes rolled around were just...vegetables + some "fancy" sauce for $15 lol. Even on their main menu, we ordered their most popular state bird and...it tasted just like any other fried bird. The onions and cheese did not blend very well with the bird, in my opinion. We also got their crab yuba noodle and...there was barely any crab or any crab flavor at all! Bc they put kimchi into the dish, the kimchi flavor pretty much overpowered everything!! For $40, I truly was expecting more. Overall cool concept to check out and great service but...good? I think you could go somewhere else that's not Michelin star and get a much better experience.

I really wanted to love this restaurant and have been excited to visit for a long time. Unfortunately I was slightly let down by the experience. The food was good but not great while the prices run high. It felt like I was missing something that was its wow factor. Overall, it's still a fun place to eat with the dim sum style carts but there are lot more options in SF I would visit next time! 1. Sichuan guava soda 4.5/5 This soda was delicious with very little spice/numbing flavor, but I would recommend getting the drink with less or no ice. I would say 70% of my drink was just crushed ice... 2. Potato ball with burrata and pesto 3.5/5 The potato ball was literally just that and the pesto/burrata was very salty. The burrata was not as creamy as I would've liked 3. Radish with garlic butter 3/5 The radish tasted raw and came with a very salty garlic butter that I did not think complimented the radish very well. 4. Financiers with duck liver mousse 3.75/5 The financiers were tasty but I just was not a fan of duck liver. I think this came down to personal preference though. 5. CA State bird 5/5 This quail was delicious! Very tender with a super crispy/crunchy crust. This was my favorite item of the night. However it was on top of some soft onions which I found salty. 6. Pork belly 4/5 This was very crispy and tender plated with citrus and sauce (fish sauce perhaps?). I liked this one but also didn't find it super unique. 7. smoked trout dip 5/5 This was a top item of the night. I really liked the dip with chips as it had a good smoked flavor without being too salty. 8. Soudough sauerkraut ricotta pancakes 4.25/5 You can order a subset of the 4 pancakes so that you don't get full off of them. These were tasty and a pretty unique item. We only got it because it's one of their most popular items. 9. Ricotta cheesecake 4.5/5 I really liked this dessert which came with some crunch fennel on top. There was a layer of apricot jam on the bottom which added a nice sweetness to the dessert.

I personally liked it and thought it was one of my more favorable restaurants I've had in SF and I like the variety they offered. The statebird dish itself was quite average/ tasted like fried chicken but there were some dishes (esp on the dim sum cart) that I thought were one of my favorite dishes I've had in city and super flavorful! (Here are my rankings of the dishes in order - 10 being last and 1 being my favorite) Pork belly - 4 Oysters - 8 Trout dip + chips - 1 Dumplings - 5 Brioche - 11 Clams - 7 Ribs - 2 Cod - 3 Potato beignets - 9 State bird - 10 Steak - 6

On a calm Monday evening, my partner and I were celebrating my birthday and to make it even more special we decided to check out this legendary restaurant. Shortly after being seated we were greeted and given a few recommendations by Joe(I think that's his name). We loved his energy so we ordered everything he suggested: the smoked black cod toast, pork katsu, and the tare glazed wolfe ranch quail. However before we even ordered these items, the first of the dim sum style dishes came out. We added on basically every single one of the dim sum items, starting with the Thai Beef Dumpling and the Cod Dip. Keep in mind, each dish had a much more elaborate name and description, so I am giving them a simplified name. Both of these first small dishes were great, especially the Cod Dip. It had a great smokeyness and was so flavorful with the herb oil on top. Next was the Saeurkraut Oyster. It was good, but after recently having some oysters in Monterey, this was not as good. The Fish Sauce Pork Belly came next and it was insane. Super tender, juicy and crispy, the pork belly was so delicious and the sauce and herbs brought it to the next level. The pork ribs followed and they were a bit underwhelming. The sauce really just tasted like regular old hoisin sauce. Next was the Salmon Tartare that was incredible. The flavor was impeccable, the cucumber was so light and crisp and the salmon was so buttery. Our last small dish was the scallop crudo. This one was also fantastic and had a great balance of textures of flavors. Then our a la carte items arrived. The Smoked Black Cod Toast was delicious. A ton of flavor from all of the toppings and the toast gave a really nice crispy bite. The pork katsu was also great. The pork katsu itself was a little underwhelming, but all of the other components were amazing. Finally the Tare Glazed Wolfe Ranch Quail was insane. Potentially my favorite dish of the night, it was an absolute flavor bomb. The quail was prepared delicately and each component was well thought out. We ended the night with the Chevre 'ice cream' Sandwich. This was so delicious as well. The macaron had a perfect texture and the flavors came together perfectly. The vibe and system of this restaurant are just so fun. Though they didn't really do much at all regarding the bday celebration, I'd come back here for a regular night. Most Michelin star restaurants do a lot for specific celebrations so I was a little disappointed but at least the food and Joe made up for it.

This was my first time trying State Bird Provisions for an anniversary dinner. Overall, the food was 4.5 / 5 but rounding up to a 5 for this review as service was efficient and servers were patient with answering our questions. We told our waiter about my preference to exclude green onions and he flagged a couple of dishes on the menu that included them so we knew what to avoid. We ordered 3 dishes off the menu - the Red Trout (entree) and 2 appetizers, the Smoked Black Cod Toast and Mortadella Sando. Initially, we had wanted to order a 4th dish as well, but our waiter advised against it because 3 dishes on top of any dim-sum style orders would be a lot of food for 2 people. Out of all 3 menu dishes, the Mortadella Sando and Red Trout stood out the most. The bacon onion jam on the Mortadella was the best part, being savory and creamy without being overly salty. The Red Trout was light and refreshing, served with a citrus side salad and macadamia nuts. While the Black Cod Toast was fresh and excellent as well, the mix of red onions and tamarind curry were slightly too sour for me. I also had to remove the green onion garnish from this one. For the dim-sum style orders, my favorite were the oysters, clams, and golden beet with duck pate. Their oysters and clams were so fresh and high-quality that they had a hint of sweetness to them, and each of their seasonings didn't overpower the natural flavor of the shellfish itself. The golden beet almost didn't taste like a vegetable with how rich and savory the duck pate and pistachio were, and the warm Mediterranean-style spices made this dish stand out from the rest. Personally, I would suggest passing on the pork belly and silken tofu with mushrooms. While the texture of the pork belly was perfectly crispy and soft, the citrus in the sauce was too astringent for my taste. The silken tofu had a satisfying texture as well, although not the most worthwhile to order as it's not a unique dish and would cost a fraction of the price at an actual Chinese dim sum restaurant. The ricotta cheesecake gets its own paragraph because it was that good. Initially, the fennel salad listed in the description seemed suspicious to me, but it provided a vegetal and slightly salty taste which perfectly offset the creamy ricotta and sweet apricot jam. The hazelnuts and burnt sugar provided a fun crunch as well. For a Michelin star restaurant, they are on the affordable side. I do recommend a reservation over walking in, as the line at 5:30 for walk-ins was 30 people deep. Overall, I would come back to State Bird to celebrate future special occasions! This was a fun experience that managed to be casual yet elevated at the same time, and I enjoyed seeing what dim sum dishes other tables ordered.

Parties of 6-8 guests get a full menu rather than dim-sum cart style. Ours was 14 dishes.
    Calvin C.

Tip for the day: They have two types of reservations: 1-4 guests and 6-8 guests. It's best to go here with 1-4 guests because you can order dishes individually off the menu. If you go with a party of 6-8, you have to get the full menu, which could be too much food for most people. If you do go with 6-8, you should go with 8 because there is an $800 minimum. Groups of 6 may have difficulty meeting the minimum as the cost is $110 per person. You'll have to make the difference by buying beverages, additional food, or a gift card. We had a group of 6 people and ordered the full menu. Like a lot of other guests, we enjoyed the food here. With 14 dishes, it's a lot food. For a Michelin one star restaurant, we felt that the price of $110 reasonable. The service was good, but maybe somewhat less than what you might experience at a typical one star restaurant. Our server was friendly and took time to explain the dishes. But she seemed like she had a lot of tables to serve and wasn't able to spend time with us due to the workload. She also made a few errors on our beverages. We visited on a Sunday evening and were able to find street parking on Fillmore about a block from the restaurant. We made our reservation about two weeks in advance. We'll go again because we now have a gift card that needs to be redeemed.

if you stand in line at around 5:00PM then its you will be seated at 5:30. even if you are there later you can get a reservation for later as a walk-in.

Are there enough vegetarian options for a vegetarian to enjoy the meal?

In my opinion, yes, the meal would still be enjoyable, BUT nearly all my favorite dishes had meat in them.

I've heard that if I get in line early, I can still get a table Friday/Saturday night even if I don't have a reservation. How much earlier do I need to get there?

On a Sunday, we arrived about 10 minutes before opening and were seated within the first 20 minutes or so. On a Friday or Saturday, probably an hour ahead of opening.

I'm always hunting for spots like this because I have a weakness for those over-the-top, Instagram-worthy desserts that look like diabetes in a dish. Like most places in this genre, A Buttercup is small, modern, and minimalist with limited seating. If you plan to go, aim for off-hours unless you enjoy waiting in line for sugar. The decor is cute and trendy, perfect for photos if that's part of your dessert ritual. As they say, "you eat with your eyes first," and when it comes to presentation, this place definitely gets an A+. The desserts look stunning and set high expectations. Unfortunately, that's where things started to crumble. It's like going to see your favorite artist live. You've watched the videos, memorized the songs, and paid for the experience. But instead of the electric performance you imagined, you get someone lip-syncing and barely connecting with the crowd. That was this place in dessert form. We ordered the Mango Bingsoo on our first visit, and when it arrived, we were surprised by how small the portion was. The guy next to us even looked over and said, "Whatever that is, I'm getting that next time." He shouldn't have. The Bingsoo looked great but was bland, and the "snow" was more chunky ice than soft shave. The Thai Tea Roti was also not what I expected. It came with Thai tea ice cream and sauce alongside a roti that was fried to a crunch. Interesting idea, just not the best execution. The sauce and ice cream needed a stronger Thai tea flavor to balance the crispy roti, and the flavors never quite came together. Overall, A Buttercup nails the aesthetics but misses the flavor. If you're here for the photos, you'll be happy. If you're here for the taste, you'll leave with a full camera roll and an unsatisfied sweet tooth.

The quintessential SF experience for having a shop not within the high walkability/visability areas. There was a decent line when I went, and I waited a good 20 minutes in total. It comes in a housemade sandwich, which is has an ube base and is a little sweet. It reminds me of the bread part of the uncrustables in a way. The ice cream is not too sweet, but the thickness of the sandwich somewhat lowered the flavor profile of the ice cream to sweet cream. They have asian inspired flavors which makes me want to come back... ...until I'm reminded of the price. The ice cream is really good, don't get me wrong, but I can literally buy 4 quarts of high quality ice cream at Safeway for the same price as a what is essentially a somi-somi with more flavors. I guess hype and long lines is really all it takes for you to make it in the SF food scene, regardless of price.

It was kinda hot & stuffy inside even with the door open because it was a warm day. We were told in advance that orders would take approximately 20-30 minutes to arrive because they were short staffed at the time (additional staff arrived after an hour). My friend had to Thai tea crepe cake & I had the mango tango (because I looooove mangoes). The Thai tea crepe was pretty good, lots of Thai tea flavor, and not too sweet. The Thai tea custard sauce added a bit of sweetness to it. The mango tango was sooo good! I loved the coconut ice cream (it's a shaved from a block of ice cream so it's really fluffy). The fresh mango was served on the side in addition to a small bowl of coconut, sticky rice and additional mango sauce. Service was as efficient as possible. Server was helpful too.

To be honest, when I came here, I did not expect much. I typically am not the type to get snow or anything icy, since it is not the first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to dessert, but I am so glad I got to experience this. When I came on a Wednesday night, it was not too busy, and my friend and I were able to get our food within 10 minutes. The spot itself is pretty small, with not a lot of seating, but some limited spots outside. I got the black sesame with condensed milk, and my friend got the mexican hot chocolate. What makes this place stand out so much is the texture of the dessert, which was fluffy, soft, and melted in your mouth. Overall, I want to come here again and try the other flavors!
