We had to make a quick stop to visit my sister n law at the hospital and on the way out we wanted to grab a bite to eat somewhere close. My fiancé is hooked on Tender Greens and California Chicken Cafe so we looked to see which one was in the area. Tender Greens was in the area so we decided to hit it up about 20 mins before it closed. My first experience with Tender Greens was a to go order my fiancé brought home and it was decent but I really loved the mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts so I had to get those again. I decided to go with the big plate: albacore, kale salad and mashed potatoes. For being healthy, I actually thought this meal had a lot of flavor and when I was finished it gave me that full that wasn't too heavy. The kale salad was basic but the albacore and mashed potatoes were the winners here. I also had their fresh squeezed lemonade and it was totally fresh! Probably some of the best lemonade I've had in a while. If you have room left over, make sure to get one of their pastries. We went with the hazelnut chocolate chip cookie and the cranberry cupcake. If you're ever craving for some healthy eating, then I'd definitely check this place out. I came out here for a girl's dinner date and the food is pretty delicious. You order at the counter and work your way down to the cash register in a cafeteria-style manner (think Lemonade) I opted for the big plate ($11.50) with the salt and pepper chicken, as a hot plate (which comes with delicious mashed potatoes) and a simple salad. The food is absolutely delish! There's plenty of seatings so my friend and I had no problem finding a spot to eat. Parking can be tricky because it is Pasadena. If you want healthy get the dressing on the side. Fried chicken salad, is just that Fried Chicken with salad, but I didn't get that. In order for me to eat healthy I get the salt and pepper chicken with 2 sides of veggies, like the roasted brussel sprouts or the spiced carrots or broccolini. We got their big plates (-$12) which include a protein, mashed potatoes, and a salad. If you have any reservations about paying $10.50 for a salad in a cafeteria setting, give in. Tender Greens does a great job. The restaurant is incredibly comfortable and inviting. This location adorns its walls with graphic paintings of iconic Pasadena locales and has a low, linear wood seating. I chose from the salad side of the menu with the fried chicken salad. While it was quite an exercise in knife and fork work with the large butter lettuce and freckled romaine leaves, it was well worth it. My salad had two large pieces of well-seasoned fried chicken. The portions were so generous that I could have easily made two meals out of the salad. The crisp radish and cucumber were a good foil for the savory chicken. I loved the dill dressing and wished I had a side of it for extra dunking. John chose from the entrees and had the chipotle BBQ chicken over arugula and tomato salad. I much preferred my own dish. I could not taste the chipotle heat or smoke or any BBQ on his chicken. The arugula salad was not an example of Tender Green's excellent salad making skills. We also ordered the tomato soup with basil oil as a side. The soup was one of the best tomato soups I'd ever had - a great balance of sweet and tangy. It is actually difficult to mess up this soup if it ends up too much like ketchup or tomato paste but this was perfect in texture and taste. The basil oil was a natural accompaniment. All drinks at Tender Greens are refillable, which is a huge plus. On the downside, the staff do not make it easy for you to refill your drinks. Prior reviews suggested that they go so far as to walk around and offer you refills and even pack up drinks in disposable cups on your way out. No such thing occurred during my visit and we had to uncomfortably ask the cashier to refill our mint lemonade in between ringing up orders. Tender Greens could benefit from having a dedicated employee responsible for drink refills and validating parking cards. That's not exactly a revenue generating position but I still espouse it. For dessert, we snacked on the cowboy cookie, an addictive combination of oatmeal, chocolate, and coconut. The oatmeal and coconut resulted in a chewy texture, our favorite. Since it was our first visit, we got a bit of everything from each part of the menu. As a result, our simple salad lunch totaled nearly $30. Oh man! I'm in heaven! I'm pretty much in love with this place. It's so nice to have a delicious meal and not feel like you hate yourself afterwards. When you walk in, walk to the right and that's where the line starts. It usually takes me a while to figure out things, so I wasn't sure exactly what was going on. There's a huge chalkboard menu with specials along with a menu at the cashier. You order there and walk through a cafeteria line, all the while watching food being prepared. All I could think was... Why didn't I order that?! I opted for the Harvest salad because I'm trying to be semi-healthy. It was fantastic. It had a fresh European spring mix which was made of the most delicious greens. It was topped with goat cheese, pecans, pears and other seasonal fruit. It was pretty devine. They just do everything really well. After trying Lemonade I wanted to see if this place was any different. I think my overall feel is that I like Tender Greens better. PARKING: Street is best, if you turn before the plaza and then left on Union you can find street parking for an hour or so and you won't have to pay. You basically wait in line and then order and then pay at the end and wait for the food to be done and they put it on metal trays for you and then you sit down. It has that urban/organic/home grown/local food type of feel a lot of new restaurants have. You order first then go down a line and you can see them make your food and pay at the end. They give you little metal trays, like you are a cafeteria. FOOD: I feel like their focus is definitely on salads but they have this thing called the "hot plates" where you can get a different type of meat, then a salad or you can get it in a sandwich form or with a small salad and mashed potatoes. I got the fried chicken on kale simple salad and then a side of mac n cheese. FRIED CHICKEN - The fried chicken was pretty good, juicy and crispy but I think it could have been a little saltier. I felt like it was a little on the bland side - maybe they were trying to go for a more "healthy" taste but I felt like it could have used more seasoning. The kale salad was pretty good, lots of kale with parmesan and a tasty dressing. MAC N CHEESE - The mac n cheese was kind of disappointing. After an adventurous day in LA, I was starving. I had never been to a Tender Greens location so it was finally time to try it out. There was a line when we arrived but it moved fast. The concept is similar to Chipotle but the menu is pared down quite a bit so it's simple to make your choice and move along. After a quick glance I knew what I wanted - steak on baby spinach. As you move through the line, they prepare your meal and we found a table pretty quickly. Food was fantastic! Steak is medium rare and the baby spinach comes with hazelnuts and goat cheese. Used to really like this place but recent visit made me not want to come back. I came in with my friend around mid day at 2PM so it was not busy. Cashier was very kind and took our order accordingly. We grabbed a table and waited around 30 minutes for our food when we finally realized they forgot our order. It was just a seared tuna and a med. rare steak for me, both with mash potatoes and salad. They decided to refund me for the meal because of the wait which I appreciated. But the food took another 15 minutes to come out and he places a well done steak in front of me. I don't normally complain but I asked if that was med. rare and he said straight to my face that it was. See pics that anyone that eats steak or works at a restaurant would know it was definitely over cooked. I told the cashier and she also agreed it was not mid rare and asked the chefs to remake a side of med. rare steak. The bread was dry, hard to chew, and soggy. The original steak was also dry and chewy so I couldn't eat it at all. The second attempt of med. rare steak was just cold and I felt like they just slightly microwaved pre cooked steak. Only the Caesar salad and the mash potato was some what enjoyable. Not to mention one of their workers kept fixing his pants in front of patrons while delivering food. They didn't even ask us what we wanted our substitute to be instead of our original side and just gave us whatever. No apology just substituted it without confirmation or telling us us they ran out. Yay! Tender Greens proves that you don't need to sacrifice flavor when trying to eat healthy. I got their Tuna Nicoise, which includes seared albacore over a generous portion of mixed greens. The salad was lightly dressed (as opposed to being drenched at some other places like Lemonade) and came with other components (potatoes, olives, tomatoes, green beans) that added to the texture and flavor. I didn't care for the capers on it though. My friend got the steak plate with arugula salad and she was highly satisfied with her meal as well. Sampled the drinks (lifestyle and mint lemonade) and didn't care for either. The lifestyle tasted healthy...but not something I would drink for enjoyment. The mint lemonade was way too sour. Decent portions prepared fresh and prices are very reasonable. The place has a modern Euro decor with plenty of seating available. I come here mostly for their soups and salad cause they're so good. For $11, try their backyard steak and tender green salads. The steak is cooked perfectly medium rare and horseradish vinaigrette works well with the salad so good. As a side dish, get it with grilled / roast vegetables or mash potatoes for an additional $5 more. The Tuna Nicoise salad is also a great choice. Tuna is fresh, lightly grilled (still rare inside) and served with a citrus dressing. To drink, try their fresh mint lemonaide or agua fresca. So refreshing and perfect accompaniment to your meal. Save room for dessert cause the blueberry & carrot whoopi pies and strawberry shortcake are awesome which is probably why I only have a salad for lunch.. I went to tender greens tonight and I had the worst experience. My first encounter with the cashier was off putting. He was extremely rude for absolutely no reason. I work in customer service and have worked in fast casual settings for many years, so I understand being frustrated with difficult customers during a shift -- however, I was super nice and my order was easy! 2 plates, an extra side of chicken, and two drinks. I originally asked for it to go but it started raining and I parked far, so I was going to let them know I would prefer to dine in so I didn't need a bag. Before I get to the actual craziness, people who ordered way after me got their food before me. So I went up asking for an estimate and to let them know I was going to have it for here instead and the worker told me, "I can't determine who's food comes our first but you will get it when you get it." He was not apologetic at all and didn't even bother to ask the kitchen how much longer. Again, I wasn't rude. I think it's fair to ask how much longer.. So the same cashier was running everyone's dine in food and was personally giving the people who ordered their food to go their orders. He came up to me with a condescending tone and said "you don't need a bag, right? You want to eat it here? Well you can get your food. It's on the counter," as he was handing the person sitting next to us his order. And I feel like it was completely uncalled for. My boyfriend went up to him and asked him what his problem and he said, "this is tender greens. I'm not tolerating that, you can get the f out." Seriously?? I didn't know asking for your order for here instead of to go was SUCH an inconvenience. If I had known, I would have taken my food to go. We spoke with the manager and she was kinda helpful. She comped half the order. But I will never be back because that type of behavior should not be tolerated. And I'm so sad because I love tender greens. But I felt so unwelcome for absolutely no reason. read more

Came for the first time on a Friday night around 7:30pm. The line was a little past the door but it goes by fairly quick. You order and slowly move down the line (while creepily watching them make your food) - by the time you get down to pay, usually the food will be ready! Grab a place to sit and enjoy your food. Salt and pepper chicken on a hot plate (w/ mashed potatoes) with romaine. The romaine salad was okay - a little soggy. The salt and pepper chicken was moist and delicious! Wish they gave a little more than just four pieces though =/ Try the agua frescas! Watermelon juice. Not too sweet, just enough. Very very refreshing. Price is a little expensive .. about $15 for my plate and a drink. Light meal! Parking is either on the street or there is a lot nearby for $5 after a certain time (I think 5pm) and $3-$4 before 5pm. read more

In general I love the Tender Greens franchise and have been a loyal customer since their first few restaurants opened in San Diego when I lived there years ago. But I have been coming to this Pasadena location for a while and have to give this store a low score compared to other locations I have been to. The quality and consistency of the dishes I order vary drastically on every visit. Multiple times I have been there dishes were prepared wrong or the quality of the food was substandard. The cleanliness off the dining area has been messy with tables left unclean on many occasions too. Unfortunately I think I will have to stop attending this location and try other locations instead. read more

Wilson mentioned me this place knowing how much I love sandwiches and salads. He had been before with his friends and decided to take me on a date here. I ordered the backyard marinated steak among roasted flavorful red peppers with some aioli that is all neatly packed into a ciabatta bread to form a sandwich and a simple salad that consisted of baby arugula, tomato drisselled with balsamic vinaigrette all for about $11. The steak is tender, amazing flavor and the bread is soft and super fresh! The salad is refreshing as well and has a great combination of ingredients to satisfy your hungry self. Wilson ordered the backyard marinated steak on a hot plate instead of a sandwich. The steak is served with a good sized portion of mashed potatoes. The mash potatoes are pretty good. Not dry, are fluffy and have a very good sort of buttery flavor. His plate also comes with a simple side salad. His consisted of baby spinach, goat cheese, hazelnuts and his dressing was cabernet vinaigrette. I tasted his salad and if I had to choose, i would go for his the next time around. To drink we ordered the mint lemonade and if you have had lemonade in the past, this one is like none other. This one is NOT overly sweet to where you cringe as you drink and swallow it down with plain water to just remove the sugar coat off your tongue. Their mint lemonade is refreshing and has the perfect blend of lemons and mint to quench your thirst without removing the smile off your face. This place made us walk out happy. The place is pretty open and spacious. The service is friendly and welcoming. Perfect place for a casual little date or a time to catch up on some gossip with some friends. The food we've ordered was just delicious which makes this place not your ordinary sandwich place. But I guess thats what makes this place a bit more special. The quality of the food is totally what you would get for paying $11 or so a plate. We both agreed that was a bit over priced for the amount of food we got though. The portions are decent size and enough to share if you want to be satisfied but we both each finished our meals and were full.
