I go to Mitsuwa for lunch on a weekly basis and I have given this spot enough chances that I finally need to say something about it. It is gross! On my last visit virtually every element in my bowl were nasty: the shrimp thin greasy and limp, I bit into broccoli there was raw batter in the middle of it, the squash, uncooked and hard as a rock. The insult to the injury is taking a sip of the miso, really! they can't even give you a passable bowl of miso soup. If only what they gave you had any resemblance to the beautiful pics on the menu board (I think that's what keeps luring me back despite having enough evidence to know better). The indifference that this inedible food is presented to you will make you sad. read more

Omg the tempura here is just so amazing and delicious. Love love love their tempura. I can eat this everyday. Shrimp was made just right it was so crispy. The mushroom and zucchini was good too. I love the soy sauce and the rice. I think it's pretty affordable too. I used to order the chicken kastu in the other place but I think I'll go here from now on. I have yet to try the eel bowl and I can't wait to come back. read more

If you're a fan of tempura, then you do have to try this. They have many different things fried and they do a pretty good job. It's crispy and more flavorful than most other tempuras. It can be greasy so I would share with someone. The soft boiled egg, and eel stood out. read more

Tempura Hannosuke - Tempura box with eel and poached egg - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

We ordered the original set which came with a bowl of miso soup. The flavor of the tempura was pretty good, and I really liked the sweet soy sauce. However, I wish the tempura was more crispy and not as soft. I definitely want to try the chicken and eel tempura next time =]. read more

Tempura Hannosuke - The original set with miso soup - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

Overall a good experience. I ordered set #1 which is the same as the one I had in Tokyo. I felt that the tempuras here are not as crispy and the sauce is less generous. The nori is really crispy though. Although there are some downside, can't complain of the shorter queue time, and not having to wait outside in the cold. read more

Tempura taste soft and soggy, very disappointed. Looks like there is a change in ownership. Food quality took a shit since the last time (2 years ago)? Also took 30-40 minutes just to order the food when the line wasn't even long. I don't think I will visit this spot again. read more

H ave the cold soba on a hot muggy summer day! A mazingly simple and delicious :] N oodles could be fresher, but great for price~ N ot gonna complain when it's so cheap! My kids were the first to point out that the tempora was terrible. I then tried them and they were right. Some had way too much breading and the breading wasn't flaky like most of the Japanese restaurants usually make them. The dipping sauce for the tempora was tasteless as well. We ordered several orders of the tempora and we all agreed that it wasn't good. They sure had us fooled. There was a long wait for horrible food. We thought the long line was a sign that they make good food. We were wrong. read more

The line was long as usual but it was worth the wait. The edomae tempura set never disappoints

Very happy to find this place, the tempura chicken bowl is so fantastic. It's my first time to try the flavoured tempura, the sauce with rice is yummy too! Love this place and definitely will go there again. read more

Saw this place the first time in Odaiba in Tokyo. When I saw it here at Mitsuwa it made me feel at least I was going to have real Japanese food. You know... these days in the USA a lot of Japanese places are run by non-Japanese which the food is too much of adaptation. Anyway another reason that I like Hannosoke is their consistency. I have tried different dishes and now I am stick to #2 TenDon. read more

Great tempura bowl. The pieces were fried to a golden consistency without being too oily or crispy and were well-seasoned. The rice was good quality and not too much or too little. They provide a miso soup with every order. Cash only. read more

Got a Tendon (#2 on the menu) and really enjoyed the fact that it was a mix of tempura vegetables and seafood (shrimp and fish). I've never seen a tempura poached/ soft-boiled egg before and must say that the runny yolk was a perfect match with the flavors present in the dish. It also came with a bowl of miso soup which I thought really contrasted with the textures and flavors of the Tendon. read more

Tempura Hannosuke - Two Ten-Dons with the miso soup in the back - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

This used to be a nice tempura restaurant the first couple of years. They fried all in sesame oil and had two vegetarian options: Veggie Tendon and Veggie Tempura with soba noodles. Then they stop using sesame oil, they reduced the variety of vegetables, they took off the Veggie Tendon from the menu, then the Veggie Tempura with Soba noodles. The quality of food has also declined, whilst the price has gone slightly up. It has now come to the extent that if you ask them just not to put the fish or meat in the Tendon or Tempura, they simply refuse to do that and ask you to throw out what you don't want. They are lazy, just want your money and not do a little extra effort to make their customers happy. In world where thousands of people starve to death every day, asking you to throw out food is, in my opinion, a crime. You should boycott this restaurant! read more

The tempura was light and delicious- whitefish and shrimp were amazing. The sauce is great and I've never had fried seaweed before. I love visiting the stores in Mitsuwa! read more

I've eaten here twice, one of a Saturday afternoon, around 6:30ish and once on a Sunday night around 7:30ish. Their cold soba noodles are delicious and their tempura is light and satisfying. I particularly like their tempura veggies. The slices are the thick, the batter is light and evenly coated. Portions sizes are good. Lines can be long, but service is quick and prices are very reasonable. read more

Hannosuke is a no brainer top option at Mitsuwa. I would deem it my second favorite Mitsuwa stall, only behind the ramen restaurant (but I have no patience to wait for the ramen so Hannosuke wins!). The frying is perfection, especially what they do with the egg and seaweed. I'm disappointed there is no zaru soba during fall/winter as that is my absolute favorite accompaniment with tempura - but it just makes the experience so much more special in those months when you can get it! read more

A bit greasy, but definitely very tasty. All of their tempura bowls look very nice and come with a nice sized portion of fried seafood and veggies. The breading is crispy and salted perfectly, and everything is nice and fresh. We did wait a bit longer than expected for our order though, so have some patience. read more

You saw tempura and had one of two reactions: YESSSS or YAAAASSSSSSSSS. There's no other way to go about it. If you don't like tempura.... well.... I don't know what to tell you. To get things out of the way, yes, I did put 3 stars--but that's just a rough estimate. If you want tempura, look no further. I think people go overboard with these ratings--the average should be 3 stars, but people go around handing out 5s and 1s all willy nilly. Here's my definition: 5=Amazing 4=Good 3=Average/To be Expected 2=Bad 1=Please Avoid. If I had my way with ratings, Hannosuke would be a solid (7/10) 10=AMAZING 9=Great 8=Very Good 7=Good 6=Alright 5=Average/Meh 4=Borderline 3 2 & 1=No go NOW for the actual review... I tend to withhold my opinion on a restaurant or business if I haven't visited at least twice. This is to help ensure that my experience isn't just a fluke. I've visited Hannosuke over the past few years, and I must say that while everything remains delicious, things have changed. My last visit involved my favorite dish, the Shrimp Tempura Don with a couple added shrimp for extra indulgence. After hovering nearby eagerly awaiting my fried goodness, it arrives. Scrumptious, succulent, small? The shrimp--had shrunk. Huh. Its been noted by a couple other reviewers recently, but the shrimp have indeed gotten smaller. Don't get me wrong, everything still tastes great. The tempura poached egg still bursts with umami when you open it, the fried seaweed is just as crispy, and the rice in the don is still packed with all the juicy goodness it absorbs from everything above. Even with all of this taken into account however, I do have to drop the score from the 7.5 I would have given it previously. While the change seems relatively insignificant, there are some reasons for the large shift in score. All of these restaurants in Mitsuwa are just store fronts. The eating areas are centralized, so while other factors such as ambiance, waitstaff competence, and price go into other ratings, Hannosuke must purely rely on the quality of its food as pricing is relatively standardized. With that in mind, any small change or decrease in quality or standard of the food will have a rippling effect on my review of this restaurant. read more

I really wanted some shrimp tempura with udon but had to settle for just shrimp tempura with rice (#1 on the menu). The shrimp tempura didn't seem like it was freshly fried, and the batter to shrimp ratio was not ideal (batter was way too trick for such a small shrimp). The rice was nicely sauced though. It was just way too much fried stuff, needed something to cut it and the bowl of miso soup that comes with the meal wasnt cutting it. Might try the anago next time, but that would be the last chance to win my loyalty amongst other great stalls inside mitsuwa read more

Tempura Hannosuke - #1, shrimp tempura(4x), 1 fried poached egg, 1 zucchini, 1 fish cake, 1 fried seaweed + soy sauced rice+ bowl of miso soup - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

Eating here was bittersweet since it took the place of my beloved croquette go to spot, Katsuhama, in the Mitsuwa food court. This place serves a specialized bowl of fried items on top of a bed of rice with a signature savory sauce. It claims that in Japan, there are lines daily at their restaurant to eat. This place was decent and better than I expected. There was a nice variety of shrimp, vegetables, and other items (including deep fried seaweed) and the sauce married everything together well. While I'm not convinced that getting rid of the katsu place was worth it for this, it's not a bad option if you're craving deep fried food Japanese style. read more

They may have brought the recipes over from Japan, but not the chefs. The tempura were all so soggy! And it wasn't just me either. We had two orders of Tendon, one Edomae and one Original, but not a single tempura came with crispy breading. All the seafood and veggies inside were fresh though, and I REALLY loved the massive anago that came with the Edomae. The tempura fried poached egg was also so good, yet another brilliant way of eating egg that I'll have to try myself sometime. Second reason for disappointment - it was impossible to eat the rice. There was delicious sauce on the tempura themselves, but not the rice, what?! I was already skeptic that tempura could go well with rice, and this certainly did not help. There are much better stalls to fork over your money to in Mitsuwa, so I'd say skip this one. read more

Tempura Hannosuke - Tempura Plate - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

The old chick katsu place is gone. It is replaced with this new tendon place which claimed to have come directly from Japan. I thought it should be really good, but sadly its not. The line is long and you have to wait approximately 15 mins to get your food. Let me tell you, its not worth the wait. We order the tendon with anago (salt-water eel). The first couple of bites are decent but then it becomes really oily. It reminds me of super oily American food that you need chug down a ton of tea to rid off the taste. Anyway, lesson learned, next time move onto something better. read more

It took forever to order the food. However after ordering the food, it seems like it took longer waiting to get the food. The wait was worth it!! It was one of the best tempura I've ever had. The dish came with a soft egg which is fried on the outside but yolky in the inside. read more

Tempura Hannosuke - Original tendon - Japanese Near Me - Edgewater, New Jersey

I am a fan of this place until I found how they prepare the food. They cook the food inside and if you are tall enough, you are able to see through inside of kitchen. As a food does look great on the table but hey have a major issues with sanitation. floor is really dirty as hell since their specialty is fry food. Moreover, they prepare the food with bare hands. They touch and handle all the fries with bare hands. Only one person using the cooking glove. Also, they keep their apron in the kitchen and go out side to smoke and to bathroom. I was a big fan of this place, but after I saw that, I became a advocate of cleaners. Becareful. You are what you eat. read more

Pros: miso soup included, decent price (around $10-13), relatively short line Cons: fried (not the healthiest), a little soggy Tried this place a few times before and decided to finally give it a review. Arrived at mitsuwa around 11:30am on a Sunday and, as always, the cafeteria was packed. I went right to Hannosuke and placed my order for the chicken tendon. I had the original tendon before with the fish, but decided to switch it up. Got my order, found a seat, and ate my meal. The meal came with an egg, nori, green pea, mushroom, 2 shrimp, and a piece of chicken all tempura fried over white rice in a bowl. On the side was a bowl of miso soup and some ginger. The tempura was good, cooked perfectly and went well with the rice. I wish the pieces were crispier, as they were on the soggy side. However, this wasn't a deal breaker for me and I still enjoyed the meal. Would recommend this place and will be back for more. read more

This place is amazing! Very different from the tempura at your standard Japanese restaurant. I had the #3 which included anago (eel) tempura. It's only been one day since I've been here and I cant stop thinking about how good this tempura was. I got the #5, it was shrimp tempura, pumpkin, seaweed, egg and rice on the bottom. The rice was the perfect sushi rice. I also got a miso soup on the side which was a nice touch. Service is very friendly and helpful, it was my first time here so I did not know what I wanted. It kinda takes a while but thats okay because it means it will taste fresh. This is one of the many gems of Mitsuwa. read more

All about the shrimp tempura..get the biggest bowl (the one with the large shrimp) and skip the plates with noodles.

I have been vomiting and diarrhea after eating their sushi on rice last night. I will not go back ever again.

Their tempura is soo goood!! I've eaten tempura from higher end restaurants and Hannosuke still wins.
