Tea Maru is my favorite boba shop and I'm glad they have one in LA as I was most bummed to lose it when I moved out of Orange County. The shop is located in a little food hall but in a rather sketchy part of town, so just be careful. The parking is a bit confusing on the street as well. They're metered and it says you can pay on the app but none of the spots register in the area so it makes no sense. I was in and out in 5 minutes so it didn't really affect me but I would just be cautious. My favorite is their classic maru milk tea substituted with oat milk. The boba is so tender which is a sign of freshness and honestly... this is a drink I cannot replicate at home. The only reason why I docked them is because the location is so bad I wouldn't really see myself coming back. But I love Tea Maru and if you're in the area you should definitely check it out. Got hooked on Tea Maru recently, and by chance: via add-on to a Door Dash order. Figured why not give this boba a try...and was surprisingly impressed. I've now ordered from here twice and the drinks/boba have been fresh, delicious...even tonight's late night (15min before closing) order. My favorites are the Hokkaido and Okinawa Milk Tea with Boba. I also added on a Salted Caramel cookie and something about it NAILS exactly what I crave in a cookie: salty, caramel-y, crispy-chewy goodness. These are by "Sweet Sweet/nonGMO-Manifesto" brand and pre-packed but so good...the fact that they are packaged actually has made me load up on multiples in my 2nd order (including their Toffee Crunch Blondie and Chocolate Chunk Movie). Overall: 3.9/5 (Ubereats Delivery) We decided to try this place since they had a BOGO deal on Ubereats. The projected delivery time was 10-25 minutes but we got an Uber biker so it took 30-35 minutes. The drinks were intact but there was a bit of milk tea droplets inside the bag so I'm not sure where they came from. We kept the drinks in our fridge for a few days and they were still good so I'm pretty impressed. The non-milk drinks taste better though so I would not keep a milk base drink for more than a day. Another great thing is that even though I got no or less ice, the liquid level was still near equivalent to a regular ice drink. After trying all their drinks, I would say Tea Maru is way better at fruit teas than milk teas. Wintermelon Lemon, No Ice, 75% Sweetness ($5.99): True it's name, you can taste both wintermelon and lemon. If you leave the drink in the fridge longer, you start to get more of the bitterness from the lemon and it will taste more like lemonade. Taro Storm, 100% Sweetness With Housemade Boba ($7.84): This was the worst drink of the batch. The blended milk was like borderline bad and gave my brother a stomachache. The drink and boba had no taste at all so we threw away a nearly full cup. Grapefruit Fantasy, Less Ice, 75% Sweetness ($6.75): The grapefruit is subtle and drink was sweeter than the other drinks so I don't know what's up with their sugar level measurements. However the 75% sweetness level works for this drink. Maru Milk With Boba, Less Ice, Lactose Free Milk ($6.75): This is their brown sugar milk drink which was okay. They claim this is a house made drink and well it sure taste like it. There is nothing mega or mango about it. From the photo you can tell it looks like majority water and maybe some sugar for flavor and food coloring. I don't taste any mango at all. The lychee jelly taste bad. I always get lychee jelly from all boba spots and this was the worst tasting. Now for the parking, I wouldn't even considering coming to this location at all now that I know the drinks are horrible but also since the parking is crazy, I almost skipped out but found a parking spot a block away as I was leaving. Came here on a Sat night around 9pm and it wasn't busy at all. Should've been the first sign for us to turnaway. Either way, we ordered the mango green tea cheese crema w/ boba 25% sweet, lite ice. We kept it sealed until after the Uber ride home (about 20 min) When I had a chance to sip on the drink, there was NO mango flavor whatsoever. I honestly don't even think they put cheese crema in it either because no crema was stuck to the lid and edge of the cup like there normally is. They were closed by that time (10pm-ish) and no one picked up when I called so I left a voicemail. Called back the next morning and it's obvious that no one checks the voicemails since the person that picked up the phone wasn't aware. I left a message with the girl on duty then because the previous night wasn't her shift. I was expecting to get a call back but since I didn't hear from anyone, I ended up calling them again. The barrista Kenya (sp?) who was the one that made my drink the previous night admitted to making my drink with LESS mango and less glucose (her words) because I asked for less sweet. 25% sweet means less simple syrup NOT less mango!!! Due to the lack of mango jam, my drink just tasted like a green tea latte. And don't get me started about the lack of boba given. I asked for the drink remake or refund and she straight up told me they "can't do that" but will offer 15% off my next drink, which I obviously declined. Downtown doesn't have many boba stores so it's a great thing that Tea Maru has opened in the heart of the city. It's located inside a food hall called Corporation and Tea Mary is pretty much the last one at the end of the food hall. The inside is super urban and it just feels like yes you are in a city. Overall the place has tables and chairs for groups of people to share. Inside and also outside. So if your feeling like you want some boba plus some type of food but you aren't sure what you want, this is a pretty good option to try. When checking into Yelp it actually gave me a 10 percent discount!! Not sure how long this will last but any discount is good to use. My favorite between the matcha and the taro is the taro hands down!! The ice slushy mixture with boba and taro makes it taste super good. It isn't overly sweet and has a light flavor. I enjoyed this one the most. Plenty of different drinks to choose from if you aren't a taro fan I would say you might just like their original which is the first menu item "Maru Milk". It taste pretty milky with some hint of Japanese style blended in there. I don't know what's in it's a fans favorite and who can go wrong with ordering off the first item of menus? Tip- Didn't know it but they actually make their boba in house and fresh daily!! They just started their soft opening this weekend! This is actually my go-to and favorite boba store. So excited to have this boba shop in dtla since I don't feel like there are many good boba spots here. Their quality is consistently delicious compared to their original San Gabriel location. Their boba is what sets them apart. The quality of their bobas is the perfect consistency of chewy and sweet from all the homemade flavors they make. Since it is only soft opening, they do not have all the flavors available. However, everything they have is delicious so you can't go wrong with whatever you end up choosing. My favorite drink is their taro iced milk drink. They use real taro so you can taste taro chunks inside with each sip. The drink typically goes well with their sweet potato boba, but because they didn't have that available, their strawberry boba was a great alternative. They're located in Corporation Food Hall. It's convenient to get a drink here if you're exploring dtla or even just getting food. I would recommend street parking. read more

I would like to promptly update my review from 3 stars (original rating) to 4 (current) for the just as prompt customer service response I've received online from the manager of Tea Maru. Within hours after my initial posting, I was given a thorough and reasonable explanation to why my drink was not prepared to the way I wanted it. I have attached a screen shot (message from my Yelp Inbox) to help elucidate the situation. I would also like to post a few highlights here: "...since lock down...we were only able to serve 2 types of boba per day. Generally, we will have brown sugar boba and a fruit flavor boba (strawberry, mango, or sweet potato..." "...As for our fruit boba flavors, the flavors are subtle especially when mixed with drinks. The reason is that our boba are made with fresh fruits and tapioca starch; hence, flavor will be minimal as there are no artificial flavoring..." The fact that this establishment cares enough to respond to a middle tier review (not 1 star, not 2 stars, but 3 stars) at record speed is enough to move me to give them more credits. In comparison, there are shops that royally effed up orders who would not even botther to address the problem after days, weeks, or ever, really. I would also make it VERY CLEAR that my decision to amend my review and support this business is purely driven by a genuine display of good customer service--I HAVE NOT received any compensation in any form from Tea Maru, and I am quite adamant about this since COVID has hit small businesses hard already, and their thoughtful communcation is more than enough to appease my brief dissatisfaction. Finally, to clarify, though the flavor of my mango boba pearls was subtle, I did not hate it. It's actually kinda good. I appreciate that it's made without artificial flavoring. If this wasn't apparent in my original writing, please take note that Tea Maru crafts great in-house boba. And as already mentioned, the beverage itself was also decently enjoyable. The most infuriating thing about this mistake is that by ordering off an app (Post Mates), details are sent via data or text (I'd assume), and therefore should eliminate a lot of communication errors. In the end, I instead received yellow boba, I am assuming mango, which did not go well, or as well as, with my original intention. Compounded by the fact that I was originally intrigued by the strawberry boba *specifically* that I once saw my coworker enjoying, which was why I decided to give this place a go today, it was somewhat extra disappointing. The silver lining is, the beverage itself tasted good! The in-house crafted boba was chewy and fun, and if judged on its own, quite delectable. I am kinda loving it, actually, if I am being completely honest. The mango flavor of the boba was faint, but if I really command my taste buds to "concentrate", I could discern the sweetness of mango, indeed--though it definitely took a bit of an effort. I give points for Tea Maru's unique boba creations. Nonetheless, since a blunder was made, I am not even confident how much the drink I held in my hand deviated from the original recipe. I am now wondering if they took out more ingredients than they should? Or whatnot? (Probably not? I am just not quite sure.) Or alternatively... Did the shop just happened to run out of strawberry boba at the moment? Is that what they meant by "No Strawberry"? I guess I won't find out until customer service follows up on this issue. Housemade Boba is legit. If you like boba, hands down, the best. Boba stays soft even in slush. Usually the cold hardens it, but it stayed soft throughout, like fresh made honey gummy bears.
