    Short Ribs were amazing!
    Janice M.

Understaffed. I've been here a few times and both of those times, Darcey was the hostess, bartender and server. All things considered, she is an amazing employee, but the place could be so much better if she had some help. The first visit, we were not on a schedule so the wait was not a concern. This last visit was the night of the tree lighting on the green. We showed up at 4:00 to a couple seated for dinner and a half full bar. It took 30 minutes to get a 6 piece order of wings and probably 20 minutes later our meals arrived. I had the salmon with grilled veggies and mashed potatoes. My son and husband ordered the burger and my mother-in-law had the turkey club. Mine was the best meal, my son was fine with his, my husband said the bread was stale, my MIL said that it was difficult to eat but it was ok. There's so much potential in this place. A hostess that greeted and cleared the tables would speed things up and allow others to handle the bar and waiting on the tables.

    Lovely fireside view inside

We came looking for a fireside meal and got so much more! To start, the service was excellent! Our server who's name unfortunately slips my memory was knowledgeable, funny, and personable! He went above and beyond to make our experience a good one! Additionally, the menu is unique and radiates the authenticity of a true New England dining experience! Don't miss the fresh seafood options! Finally, the cozy ambiance of bookshelves and fireside Knick-knacks can't be beat-- this was our first visit but it certainly won't be our last!

I stopped for a beer at the TAA an it has a really nice bar. The bartender and staff were really outgoing and very friendly. I felt really welcomed. The draft beer selection was great. I'll be back to try the food and beer next time. The Tavern is connected to the hotel so it makes it very convenient.

Taste of Middlesex County week - pumpkin and crab bisque
    Valerie R.

Living in Middletown, we have a choice of many fine restaurants. Unfortunately, that means that I have never made time for this little restaurant inside the Inn at Middletown. Taste of Middlesex Country rolled around and we were planning to visit a different restaurant, but found they were closed on Mondays. We decided to try Tavern at the Armory and we were pleasantly surprised. I had previously looked at the menu and thought the prices were a little high. So going during Taste of Middlesex County week gave us the chance to try it out for a little less money. They were busy when we arrived, with a few larger parties waiting for tables, but we got right in as a party of two. I thought the dining room was lovely, dim lighting, fireplace going, perfect for a nice dinner on a cold winter's night. It was so inviting. Our waitress kept apologizing, as she said they were short staffed, but she did such a wonderful job. She was really nice and our dinner had a nice leisurely pace. Sometimes during restaurant weeks you get rushed through dinner, but not here. We had a bottle of wine and relaxed and enjoyed the meal. The food was wonderful as well. I started with the pumpkin and crab bisque and my husband had the pork shank drumettes. I'm a huge soup fan, but actually like his better. The sauce was just so good! A little spicy, a little sweet. For dinner, we both had the filet with mashed potatoes and vegetables. It was perfectly cooked, but did need a little bit of salt. The veggies were good, a good mix of quality vegetables that were cooked perfectly. We were so full by dessert, but ordered it anyway since it came with the Taste of Middlesex county menu. I got the apple tart with caramel sauce and cinnamon whipped cream. It was amazing! I love a good warm apple dessert, and this hit the spot. I only wish I was able to eat more, I was just too stuffed. My husband got cheesecake, which was fine, nothing special. Overall, we had such a nice experience at Tavern at the Armory. Now that we know the quality of the food, we will definitely be back. Their regular menu prices now seem a lot more reasonable. And I could definitely use a few more nights in front of that fireplace before the winter is over!

    Thanksgiving dinner and leftovers!

We were seated quickly at a nice table with a white tablecloth, which gave it a more polished feel right away. There were TVs around showing the NFL Draft and UFL, which was nice to have to keep up to date on sports. The person I was with did wonder why the Knicks playoff game wasn't on, though. I ordered the Oven Roasted Norwegian salmon, and it was excellent. Really crisp on the outside while staying moist inside, it was exactly I like it. It was served over a bed of fresh vegetables with a salsa verde sauce that tied everything together really well. For dessert, I got the cheesecake. It looked small at first, but it was very filling. It came with a strawberry and a side of fresh whipped cream. The flavor was a little unique, not as sweet as I expected, but it worked really well. The service was good throughout the night, too. Our waiter was very friendly and kept us updated throughout the meal on when our food would be coming, which I appreciated. Altogether, this was a really solid experience and I would go back.

First off, the ambience of the place is fairly nice though you would not know it from how many of the other patrons choose to attire themselves. If you're looking for a upscale, dining experience, other patrons would suggest this is not the place for you. They started off by attending to put us at the wrong table per our reservation. The table was apparently filled, and they moved us to a different table, which was perfectly fine as it was a nice booth with a window right next to the table. They then gave us several menus from which to choose, which was confusing as there were so many different menus with similar food options, including brunch, menu, a burger, menu, a dinner menu, a Mother's Day, special menu, and the regular menu. There were also two separate drink menus. We started by ordering some drinks and an appetizer of the meat and cheeseboard for the table. We put in our full order at just before 12:59 PM and the meat and cheeseboard came out fairly quick. Overall, it was the best part of our time at the restaurant. With regards to our main meal, we had ordered an eggs, Benedict, a children's pancake and bacon, special, and a steak and eggs meal. That was apparently a mistake as it took them over one hour six minutes before the food hit the table and when it did, it was a mess. The medium rare steak was cooked to a well done with the eggs being extremely messy and not very runny for over easy. The potatoes were dark and charred in places, but we're not crispy by any stretch of the imagination. The Canadian bacon had not been rendered well on the eggs Benedict and one of the two poached eggs clearly had not been poached appropriately. Also, my daughter indicated that the syrup was way too sweet, which was especially surprising as she is someone with a sweet tooth. The pancakes themselves were extremely dense and unfair and served on a plastic tray missing one of the size that was supposed to come with the order. It is clear that the kitchen does not know what they are doing as I was the second person in a row to have issues with the cook temperature on my steak, a problem that appears to carry over to other aspects of the meal as well. At the one hour mark, I've been so frustrated. I had requested to speak with a manager and he was actually the one who brought out the food to our table. There was a good four minute gap between two of the meals being brought out and the third meal, which is what my wife had ordered for her Mother's Day brunch. By the time the eggs Benedict came out, I showed the manager my stake and eggs, and he agreed that it was cooked to a well done rather than the medium rare I had ordered. I had overheard the exact same issue on the next table over where the older woman had not gotten her meal until nearly all seven others at the table had completed their food. At that point, I sent back my steak and indicated I did not want it to be remade as I was done with the place. Shirley, thereafter, I was clear the rest of the family was of the same mind as the meals were a mess and cooked improperly. The manager eventually came over and indicated that he is going to take care of the entire CHUCK which makes sense sense more than 75% of the food ordered had been uneaten or inedible. The service was no better as waiters and waitresses would walk by and failed to refill empty water glasses, even though they would look right at the empty water glass and would have pictures of water in their hand at times. One waitress went to five separate tables around us, including table she was not serving and failed to fill our water, but filled water at other tables. Our waiter was also missing an action for a good portion of the meal. Despite having the meal taken care of, I did leave a small tip for the waiter, though nowhere near what I would have had the service been even somewhat competent. This is a major disappointment as the last experience I had at this restaurant for dinner had been so positive it convinced me to book the place for Mother's Day brunch. I'm not sure if this was a one off situation but I would never recommend a return to this place based on the experience I had this day. What's worse, our reservation appeared to fall between two rushes as we were the second table in the rush that showed up about 10 to 15 minutes after our arrival at the place. As such, our food should've been fairly quick and coming out but others who ordered their food more than 20 minutes after our table received it with no problem. I have to say that the Taco Bell we had as result of this poor food service was Myles and Myles better than the food experience at the restaurant itself.

My friend and I were out shopping and wanted to grab lunch. She was craving a sandwich so we headed to Cotton Hollow. We were pleasantly greeted at the door and seated in the bar area at a high top. We couldn't decide between inside and outside so when we were seated at a window table over looking the patio, we had the best of both worlds. Both the dining room and bar are lovely. There are tons of GF options, but I always go for the choices I normally can't have elsewhere. They have a dedicated GF fryer so I opted for the fried fish and sweet potato fries. The fries were crispy and lightly salted. The fish was tasty and crisp, but a little dry on the thinner piece. The coleslaw was an Asian style slaw, which was not my thing. It was a bit odd for me. My friend opted for a chicken wrap and it was insanely large and she said it was delicious. The photo is only 1/2 of the sandwich which she took home. I had the red sangria. It was drinkable but had a bit of a sour taste and no fruit. My friend had the Hugo Spritz, which was perfect and refreshing. I have been here a few times and they are consistent and have a wide menu. It's on my list of regulars. Hint, if you go to Sayulita and can't get in, this place is right across the street and a good choice.
