Except for the absolutely tacky Tarpy's sign going into the patio! I sent pictures of the lovely setting to several friends and they were enthralled, but each said "That sign is so ugly ". We were in town for a hike and wanted to check out a quick little happy hour spot and we found Tarpy's restaurant and bar. The happy hour selection was a great deal and they have great cocktails and small bites available at the bar. We were helped by the bartender Napolean and he was amazing , attentive and very great guy. We had a great time there and whenever we come back in Monterey, we will definitely have to stop by again here . read more

Such a beautiful place to enjoy some good food. Eating in the courtyard was definitely the best experience and people had their dogs! The food was decent. I got the French dip and the meat didn't have a lot of flavor, but the Bavarian pretzel for the appetizer was actually quite good. I hosted a group event and was very disappointed in the overall experience. The menu offerings for the value were limited and poor quality. For $125 value-a SMALL plain Cesar salad, the Chili-crusted chicken or Salmon were offered. There was no red meat option at this price point. Apparently bread was also not allowed at that price point. One soft drink or iced tea was included pp but not proactively asked by waitstaff. The dessert offered was a TINY slice of mediocre chocolate cake. On top of the terrible meal, the room was tired, run-down, the blinds were broken, the paint chipping, the projector was set up but nobody checked in with me and I was charged for the usage. Overall this is not the Tarpy's of the past- it's gone down hill! I have hosted many professional and personal events in the past, including a baby shower of my own and this was not my experience. The quality of their food, service and overall pride Tarpy's once had is no longer. I would NOT recommend Tarpy's for any type of personal or professional event. read more

Rude unhelpful hostess. Management also rude and unhelpful. Slow service. Waiters forget that you're there. Food is good. For the high prices I would think the service would be more friendly and accommodating. Annoying 80s/90s music playing throughout the restaurant, when I asked if they could turn it down they said no. I wanted to sit in another area the hostess said it was closed and shortly after started sitting people there. Very unpleasant. They tried to act like they were giving me options but really not and blaming me. I have sound sensitivity so try to sit in a quieter area if I can. read more

We picked this restaurant during a quick visit to Monterey knowing that they not only could accommodate our dog joining us, but they welcomed him! We had a reservation and sat outside on a Saturday night in July. We loved everything we ate and drank. The parking was a little tricky to navigate (once we found the lot, we were fine! We tried this place based on a recommendation from the owner of the house we rented. It was a little difficult to see the driveway from the very busy highway and the parking lot was partially under repair. We were going to sit outside with other patrons on the patio on a nice sunny day but that became untenable when the work crew started making a racket and the smell of the asphalt was bad. Everyone was graciously reseated inside. Our seats were near the door in a cave like area; we weren't made aware of the other seating areas which weren't apparent (only saw them on the way to the restroom)... Our meals were very good but they did take a long time to arrive. We split 2 dishes: the petrale sole and the heirloom beet salad. It was a delicious combination. I would try this restaurant again and hope the circumstances were better. This is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. read more

The service was so good and friendly. The food was great, we wished it would have been hot. I ordered the ribs, with a side of Mac & Cheese, and asparagus. The ribs were hot and delicious but the sides seemed to be waiting for the ribs to get cooked, so they were cold. The upside was the leftovers at home were yummy! While spending a weekend in Monterey we started our weekend by having dinner at Tarpy's. Our server Ashley was super pleasant and cheery. Started with a Barrel Aged Boulevardier. Very nice. We tried several of the appetizers - the giant pretzel as delicious and fried calamari was also good. I was a bit disappointed with the spot prawn dish- photo attached. The 3 prawns were small and came with 4 stalks of asparagus- for $49! Also there was one young server who was a bit confused with who ordered which entrees, which is ok as we all helped out, but he seemed very frustrated and kept verbalizing exasperations and tossed the plates onto the table roughly. Amazing amazing food and drinks. I had the steak and mash cooked to perfection and the Gorgonzola spinach amazing, my daughter had a mixture of apps that the kitchen brought at the same time (as asked). It was busy when I went and a lot happening but staff were so nice - the manager Kendal came over to check everything was okay and stayed on top of it. I've waned a few restaurants. I had been here a few years ago and everything was ok. I don't normally do reviews, but I feel this one was necessary. On this past Friday 4/24/26, later in the afternoon sitting with a few friends out in the patio area, getting ready to finish up we saw several rats. They come out of the bushes/planters and they were wandering around like nothing, as if they were used to this place. I seen no reaction by the servers either, I was in shock and we just finished our drinks, paid our tab and left, but I still can't believe that place, such a nice place has that infestation. I don't doubt they are able to go into the restaurant itself since the doors are also open. read more

I had lunch at Tarpy's this week and it was a wonderful experience. I had the French Dip and the quality of the beef was excellent. The bbq rosemary aioli dipping sauce is amazing. I also had the wedge salad and it was delicious. The service was excellent. The server was very nice and friendly. The ambiance is upscale but comfortable. I've been here twice now, the first time I had a provider dinner in a private room and last night I went with my GMA and we ate outside, on the patio. The patio is super cute, but it was really loud! I thought the food was better the first time I went there, but still good last night. Both times I got their Chili-Crusted Chicken, which I really loved! I got all veges this time. We also had their Fuji Apple salad, and for dessert we got their apple crumble-but it had a really weird flavor, they had already taken the dessert menu away, but I think it had lavender in it, which I did not care for. We had a 6 pm reservation through Open Table. Parking was easy, pretty close to the entrance. The initial view was an impressive out door courtyard of a Mediterranean villa. The house , now restaurant, was built of stone in the 1920's as the Ryan Ranch family homestead, so, pretty impressive. We were immediately greeted and seated, with our choice of table in a dining area adjacent to the bar called "The Stone Room". It was one of many dining areas in the facility. There is an extensive , locked wine cellar off the bar. The Calamari appetizer was excellent as was were the entrees, Shrimp Pasta, Salmon. Service was professional and timely. A manager was on duty and available. The pricing is reasonable with no hidden fees. One of the most interesting restaurants I've eaten at. I recommend going if in the area. read more

It's been a couple years since our last visit to Tarpy's. Their happy hour has a nice selection of food and drinks. We ordered the calamari, ribs, beet salad, spicy tuna tacos, and bruschetta. Most of the items were delicious. I'd pass on the calamari & tuna tacos the next time. The ribs were flavorful and cooked to perfection, falling off the bone with each bite. The beet salad was a refreshing and vibrant addition, with just the right balance of sweetness and acidity. Lastly, the bruschetta was fresh and delicious, with a great mix of toppings and goat cheese layer. Overall, the happy hour is a fantastic deal with great food and service. I made a reservation to eat here with my husband. I had eaten there a lot about 20 years ago and for a few years back in the early 2000s. It was a lovely venue with fun art and always the best servers and staff. And back then....dependable, reliable and innovative flavorful food. It still has the best art, fabulous vibe, incredible location and wonderful servers and staff. BUT the food... at least the things we ordered....not so much. The meat loaf was legendary back in the day. Now it was this strangely concocted thing that had a strange rusty pipe flavor with zero attention to flavor and nuance. It looked good. Sort of. No real distinguishable ingredients other than maybe a redslime beef with zero spice and oddly concocted recipe of nothingness. Kind of like eating an AI generated version of meatloaf. Zero tastiness. My husband's French Dip. For one horrible thing....the jus was gravy. WHO makes French Dip jus gravy? I have had canned jus. Even watered down jus. But gravy? A light, but not tasty...gravy. I wrote this knowing that as a chef I would want to know. Use bottled water...not the rusty pipe water from the tap for your "jus" and your sauces. Sorry. The water tastes bad from the pipes in that area. Hopefully, the next time I will be surprised. AND we will order the same things. read more

We just ate here on Valentine's Day. While my husband's burger and fries were good, my soup, salad, scalloped potatoes and fried artichoke hearts were literally no better than eating at a Dennys. The Caesar salad was super bland, no grated parm cheese and the dressing had no taste. The asparagus soup sounded like it would be amazing but it was watery green liquid with little taste. We were a party of 20+, for a wedding rehearsal dinner on a Saturday night. Had a semi-private area, definitely need reservations. The place was packed at 5pm. Parking- there were handicap parking right at the entrance. Service- excellent food service, accommodating ever different preferences. And for such a large group, everything came on time with right heat temperatures. Dishes: -Pork chops- had it medium done. Cooked exactly that temperature. It was flavorful. The sides that came with it was okay, Brussels sprouts were a little too mushy. - Crusted Chicken- the hostess recommended it and it did not disappoint. It was juicy on the inside. Came with creamy scallop potatoes and nice fresh green beans. The "cactus" shaped corn bread was too dry. - Rib-eye steak- it was tender and flavorful. Came with heirloom potatoes and broccoli, both cooked perfectly -Filet mignon- also tender and delicious. Desserts: -crème brûlée: very good, ate it all up -peanut butter cheese cake: a little too peanut butter and thick taste (like licking a spoon of peanut butter -coconut sorbet- refreshing -bread pudding: it was mid, not moist -Heirloom apple crackle: one of the best dessert read more
