Arrived for our 12:30 brunch and were seated right away with our reservation. (Highly recommend making a reservation.) The staff was very friendly, from the hostess and waiter to the bus staff. A manager even stopped by at the end to check in and thank us for coming. The oysters and shrimp cocktail were some of the freshest we've had. The Caesar salad was excellent, and the anchovies on top were a nice touch. Top-notch food, and we'll definitely be returning for dinner soon. The outdoor seating is beautiful as well.
Everything was Great! We try and sit on the Deck for lunch... I sat inside and it's just as nice... The Service is first Class with Honest Warmth... Never have we been Disappointed with our food Choices either! From Fish Tacos to Soups, Salads, Burgers and Specials... We Can Relax and just Enjoy... Like a Mini Vacation in Heaven...
Came here on a Saturday night for a date because we wanted a nice seafood dinner with an ocean view. We made a reservation the day before and got a table outside on the pier right by the water during sunset. We started with the half dozen oysters and the coastal clam chowder bread bowl. The oysters were some of the freshest I've had and tasted really clean. The clam chowder was New England style without bacon, which I liked, and it was buttery with plenty of clams. The bread bowl had a nice crunch and paired really well with the soup. I got the grilled chicken piccata for my main. The chicken was too dry, but the piccata sauce was really good. It came with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and both were flavorful and cooked well. I also got the China Cove Mai Tai. It was nice and strong. For dessert we got a chocolate cake with ice cream. The cake itself tasted good, but the ice cream was flat, not very flavorful, and too crumbly. The view from the pier during sunset was hard to beat, and the staff was really kind, took pictures for us, and let us stay well past closing without making us feel rushed.
This was my second time coming here, and it definitely reminded me why I wanted to come back. We made a reservation for 10:30am and were seated immediately, which was a great start to the morning. The waterfront views are absolutely beautiful and make for such a relaxing breakfast. I did expect it to be a little breezy being right by the water, but it actually got pretty warm while we were sitting outside. Thankfully, the staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of throughout our meal. We ordered both The Plaza Omelet and the Monterey Seafood Omelet, and I would happily order either one again. The Plaza Omelet was packed It was full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and really brought everything together. The Monterey Seafood Omelet was just as good it was rich without being too heavy, and the seafood tasted fresh. Both omelets came with crispy breakfast potatoes that paired perfectly with the meal. Between the delicious food, quick service, and spectacular waterfront views, this is easily one of my favorite breakfast spots in Monterey, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!
This place has gorgeous views and is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink on a beautiful day! The cocktails took quite a while to come out, but they were tasty once they arrived. The bread we got was also very good. We didn't have a meal since we were just stopping in for cocktails before dinner, so I can't comment on the food. The only major downside was the scent inside the hotel. It was extremely strong and overly floral, and unfortunately it gave me a headache. If you're sensitive to fragrances, it's something to be aware of.
Came down to Monterey on a weekend with the family and saw that Schooner's had pretty good reviews for lunch, so we made a reservation for an earlier lunch. I didn't know that Schooner's was in the Monterey Plaza Hotel, so I did have to ask some directions as to how to get downstairs to the restaurant. Arriving a bit early, we did have to wait until our reservation time to order lunch instead of breakfast, but the hotel was quite nice, and we were able to sit on a bench overlooking Monterey Bay. When we were seated, we opted outside to get a nice view, and they do have heating lamps (that were even a little bit too warm) so don't worry about the breeze. I ended up getting the fish and chips, my wife got cioppino, and the little one got some buttered pasta off the kids menu. The fish and chips was amazing...so fluffy and flaky but also had a nice crisp on the outside - probably some of the best fish n chips that I've had! Our little one also enjoyed the pasta, which was basically spaghetti noodles with butter, and we were appreciative that she was given some crayons to entertain herself. Service was excellent as well. Overall, it was a rather fancy, but very nice lunch for the three of us, and I enjoyed being a little bit away from the busy wharf/Cannery Row to enjoy ourselves before the crowded aquarium. Highly recommend!
Schooners Monterey was a wonderful experience for us! We came here last month to celebrate and decided to try the restaurant in the hotel we were staying at. First off, service was amazing here. We felt VERY well- taken care of. Staff was polite and very attentive. Ambiance was beautiful. We got the lucky seat at the back. A seagull joined us lol. We could see the ocean and the beautiful site as you can see in the photos. We ordered a bunch of food. The veggie omelette, breakfast burrito and pancake was delicious. The food quality was high from what I remember. We do plan on returning since the experience here was that memorable!
We made a reservation for this restaurant for my boyfriend's birthday lunch. This is located inside of the Monterey hotel and plaza. Service was great. We asked for an ocean view table and were happy that they had one available. We ordered raw oysters, focaccia, ceviche, and Monterey cioppino pot. I wish the menu stated that there was cheese on the focaccia since I don't eat cheese. Oysters were fresh. Our favorite was definitely the Monterey cioppino pot. It was incredibly flavorful and a good amount of seafood. Our least favorite was the ceviche. The sauce/juice just didn't match our tastebuds. The chips that came with it were delicious though! Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I would come back!
Service was great, breakfast came out quickly, and had a view of sea lions messing around in the bay. Waiter had great recommendations for the breakfasts and omelette options, crab Benedict and seafood omelette were the way to go. Would love to come for a lunch or dinner sometime.
Delightful experience, table literally right on the Bay and fab food! There is also outdoor seating with heat lamps. We were chilly and the hostess brought a warm blanket for my wife . The fresh anchovy appetizer on focaccia with tapenade and some jalapeños was great. Her gnocchi with a large side of chicken breast was terrific .My fish and chips right up there with the best ever, embellished with a house made Remoulade sauce. Our server Oscar was great, very nice bar as well. A bit noisy at the beginning, in an upscale family hotel with little kids, but on the whole great experience. No room for dessert, we brought half the entrees back to the room.
The Monterey Seafood Omelette was beautifully executed and came generously packed with sweet, fresh crab and shrimp, while the Two-Egg Breakfast was exactly the kind of comforting staple you look for in the morning, right down to the incredibly fresh sourdough toast. Snagged a table right by the water on the outdoor patio which offered an unmatched, scenic ambiance that instantly elevates the meal. The hospitality was excellent, highly attentive and perfectly paced, especially given that we had the outdoor deck entirely to ourselves. This spot is perfect for travelers or locals looking for a premium coastal breakfast with a view, and we will absolutely be back.
Went there today while waiting for my room to be ready. Had a tasty spicy margarita and an amazing panzanella salad with peaches, plums, cucumbers and tomatoes. Sat on the patio with a beautiful ocean view. Service was excellent too.
Schooners never disappoints!, we came here again after having an incredible experience our last time. We got a bit early before our reservation, and we sat at the bar for a couple drinks before dinner. There was plenty of room and bartenders were super attentive. After relaxing for a bit, we joined the dining room for our reservation. We got a beautiful spot right on the water. Our waiter Hannah promptly came to check on us and get a drink order started. My partner continued to have some very cold coors light like which he appreciated. I switched it up from Prosecco to having a Hugo spritz, which felt very refreshing. We started with truffle fries and a Caesar salad. My partner rated the Caesar salad and the fries assault eight out of 10 on both both very flavorful dressing was fantastic on the salad lettuce was very cold. Good sign of freshness. Moving onto our entrées he had the seafood pasta and I had the cioppino pot. Both very hearty in their portions. I was shown in Photos that cioppino pot I had was overflowing with different proteins from rock fresh to shrimp, clams, mussels, and crab. It was extremely flavorful, definitely one of the best cioppino I've had. My partner thought his seafood pasta was cooked perfectly also had plenty of protein to satisfy him. Only room for improvement was that it seemed our server got pretty busy with some other tables getting all set at once. Along with the fact that they had forgotten to bring me a spoon for my soup and it took a minute to wave someone down. And an honorable mention was us being able to see in otter finishing his own dinner while we were having ours very cute super fun evening for us.
Cocktails and seafood at the bar...YES PLEASE!!! Schooners is inside the Portola Hotel and I'd say the location, atmosphere and service are definitely what made this a 4-star visit for me. We sat at the bar, had a couple drinks and ordered a few things to snack on. Service was great--friendly, attentive and we never had to hunt anyone down for another drink, which is always a plus! We ordered the Schooners Seafood Tower, although "tower" is being a little generous lol. It's more of a seafood platter served over ice with oysters, shrimp, crab, mussels and tuna poke. Everything was fresh and the presentation was nice. Is it some huge over-the-top seafood tower??? Nooooo lol, but this also isn't that kind of restaurant and I wasn't expecting it to be. The tuna poke was probably my least favorite. It wasn't BAD, it just didn't do much for me and I've definitely had better. Now the Big Little Lies cocktail...that was another story!!! Delicious and I would absolutely order that again. We only stopped in for appetizers and a few drinks, so I can't really judge the entire menu without coming back for an actual dinner. Location, atmosphere and service get the 4 stars from me. The food? Jury is still out...looks like I'll have to go back and eat some more. Tough job, but somebody has to do it! ;) read more

Perfect lunch on Cannery Row after our day at the aquarium. Everything was delicious. We ordered oysters, salmon, and the Dungeness crab BLT. Soooo good! But the best part was the service. Oscar went above and beyond. He has a special energy about him that brightened our day. We will come back here any time we visit Monterey! read more

SEA FOOD - with a view! If you're looking for extremely fresh seafood with a beautiful view of the ocean, I highly recommend making a reservation at Schooners! This spot is tucked at the end of Cannery Row in a hotel, making it easy to access from Monterey Bay Aquarium and not too busy. We opted to sit on the outside patio, which is well covered and very clean, protecting the tables from sunlight and sea birds. We ordered the seafood tower, which comes with fresh oysters, snow crab claws, jumbo prawns, and ceviche and chips, and was a very good price for the value and quantity of the seafood. We also ordered the clam chowder bread bowl and seafood cioppino, which was my favorite and generously loaded with shrimp, fish, mussels, clams, scallops, octopus, Dungeness crab meat, and delicious garlic bread. read more
I love Schooners for lunch/dinner, but got a chance to try out their breakfast. The view and breeze were spectacular as always, a great way to wake up! I ordered an iced vanilla latte (comes from Tidal coffee), breakfast burrito, and a pancake. The breakfast burrito was the star - slightly smoky, balanced, creamy, and the stacking of the components was perfection - and I don't even like burritos. The pancake was good due to the berry compote served on the side. The pancake itself was a little flat and tough. The latte was decent, the vanilla syrup was a little odd and artificial tasting. But overall, a lovely spot for breakfast/brunch! read more

They have an amazing breakfast burrito here! The blackened sea bass tacos, wagyu beef burger, and focaccia with olive oil were all delicious. What ruined the experience a bit was the rude hostess. We had a reservation and wanted to be seated under some of the umbrellas since it was super hot, but she kept saying other people reserved those tables and was generally dismissive. Everyone else was very kind and service was otherwise great. read more

Amazing food, incredible service, and an unbeatable ocean view! It was truly an unforgettable experience for us. The burger was perfectly juicy, and the fish and chips were absolutely to die for. Everything tasted fresh and delicious, and the beautiful view made the experience even better. I highly recommend Schooners and would definitely come back! read more
I'd rate this as 3.5-4 stars. I was a guest at the hotel for a conference and had dinner here on two occasions. The view from the patio dining here is exceptional! But... The night I checked in was a little disappointing since there wasn't anyone at the host stand to assist. A couple servers passed by, made eye contact, and didn't greet me or indicate that someone would be out. I went ahead and opened the main door and still wasn't greeted as 3 servers spoke to each other on my right. Typically I'd walk out, but it was convenient so I headed to the bar. The bar staff was much more welcoming and friendly, and I ordered their poke bowl. I wish I took a photo since I really enjoyed this! A couple nights later I had dinner in the restaurant area, and service was much better. Staff seemed really attentive and helpful! I ordered a cup of clam chowder and the tostada with poke per my servers suggestion. The clam chowder was delicious - creamy and filled with whole clams! The tostada wasn't that great, and I don't have much to say about it. I also had the cheesecake for dessert, which I also didn't care for. read more

Decent breakfast spot with great waitstaff! We dined here to use up our hotel credit and it covered basically two breakfasts each for the two of us. I requested the crab benedict the first day and the avocado toast the second. The benedict was a little disappointing and tasted liked canned crab instead of fresh. It was a hefty portion though and I liked the cornbread muffin in lieu of an english muffin. The avocado toast was much more flavorful and I added on the poached eggs (2 for $6). The pickled onions packed a punch and the tiny bottles of tabasco added the right amount of heat. I was interested in the juices but was told that it was not freshly squeezed, so decided against it. On a nice day, the patio outdoor seating is lovely! I saw sea otters in the waters as well. read more
This is what you expect when you come to the coast. A restaurant overlooking the ocean with waves and sea breeze. The wait staff were very attentive and 4 people checked on us. We came for breakfast. The Dungeness crab egg Benedict had soft runny eggs, a generous amount of crab meet, over a delicious corn bread. Very well done. My kid's seafood omelet were very good too. I will come back to dinner one day. read more
First of all, Schooners is located inside the Monterey Plaza Hotel (I didn't know so I struggled to find it lol). We were able to find street parking easily but there is also a public parking lot nearby. As for the restaurant, the ambiance is amazing; it's right next to the water so the view is great! Try to sit outside if you can, but the inside is not bad either if you're by the window! Service was great, everyone was nice! For food we ordered the Schooners Tower, Dungeness Crab Pasta, Monterey Cioppino Pot, and the kids chicken tenders and fries. Honestly the food wasn't amazing/just okay, but this is the type of place you come for the atmosphere and views to take photos lol. Overall I would return again just for the vibes. read more
Good food, good service. Came on a weekend that had great weather but was unable to get a seat on the patio without waiting. We opted for the bar. Interior is fairly small in comparison to how much seating is offered outside with the bar having about 6 seats. Service was quick. Ordered the plaza lifestyle to drink. It was fine but the non alcoholic selection looked a lot better. To eat I got the clam chowder bread bowl, my friend got the dungeness crab pasta and we shared the garlic fries. The fries were hot and delicious. As for the clam chowder it was alright, little under seasoned. And the staff seemed really confused when I asked for butter for my bread bowl. The pasta was a little oily and had some additional ingredients we were unsure of that weren't listed on the menu. Overall it was good, great view and open dining room with fast service. read more

Food review for just clam chowder, it was great, seasoned well, lots of clams, good texture, not too thin or thick. Although I've never had bell peppers in my chowder, I didn't taste it. One of the best clam chowders I've had. Seafood tostadas was bigger than expected, tostada was crispy, I have a salty palette so it was a little bland for me. read more

We went to Schooners for a Saturday brunch. Getting a reservation for 4 was easy - I requested a table with a view and this place did not disappoint! We got a table with a stunning ocean view. Our server was very friendly and attentive and service was fast. We had the coffee cake, schooners omelet, Dungeness crab Benedict, tidal croissant egg sandwich and the Monterey seafood omelet. All dishes were tasty and we ended up ordering the coffee cake 2 more times There was a small problem with one of our dishes, and when we informed the staff they were very gracious and comped a coffee cake and garlic fries for us. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and we look forward to visiting again. read more
The ambiance here was wonderful! We sat outdoors to enjoy the beautiful coastal views. Our food arrived quickly, and the service was excellent. Every staff member was incredibly friendly; Maryanne the manager even stopped by our table for a warm chat she was so nice! The menu offers so many great options! My kids loved the spaghetti and meatballs--the pasta was fresh and perfectly al dente! My little one ordered the clam chowder, which was rich and deliciously creamy. I highly recommend the tostada tuna poke for its fresh seafood and tasty wasabi sauce. For salads, my stone fruit salad with salmon was amazing (the dressing and fresh fruit paired perfectly), and my husband loved his classic Caesar salad topped with anchovies and falafel.We will definitely return the next time we visit Monterey! This spot is absolutely worth it for the food, service, and unforgettable views. Highly recommended for lunch or brunch! read more
It's amazing the power of local public television shows. Having planed a trip to the area a few months in advance, I happened to catch an episode featuring restaurant in this area and saw a familiar face. After watching it and seeing a familiar face, I knew a visit here would happen. Having a wonderful dinner the night before, I made reservations earlier to have lunch on a Saturday here with friends who joined me for the rest of my trip. We were greeted by Jesse who also greeted me at Coastal Kitchen the previous evening next door. We were seated in the outdoor patio area with a full view of the bay on an overcast early afternoon. When we sat down to study the menu, one guest mentioned wanting to order the everything but we exercised restraint. A few minutes later, the food came, all shared : 1. Schooner seafood tower (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=PbaEpTWN1sRBphz5E9rojg) came to our table, Sea west coast oysters, poached shrimp, chilled crab claws, mussels, local ceviche; this was visually and tastefully impressive with its variety of fresh seafood. The ceviche was especially addictively good and the mignonette for the oysters were spot on. 2. Classic Caesar salad (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=XspeJgks2HJr3nonxDfrIQ), romaine , caesar dressing, parmesan anchovies, garlic crouton; the lettuce was crisp and nicely dressed, topped with generous anchovy slices. A couple of my companions complimented the quality of the anchovies (fresh and flavorful). 3. A nice side to offset all the other guilty foods we shared. 4. Dungeness crab pasta (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=uB4ImtgOMJ44wxrlR317CA), fettucine, spinach, lemon basil pesto. I didn't have much of this as I was already full when I finally tried this. 5. Monterey cioppino pot (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=QW-mMx8CW5Z396FssiiGgw), Shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari, seasonal fish, saffron, dungeness crab broth, baguette. This was the star of the show (besides the seafood tower). The freshness of all of the seafood and the intensity of the broth flavors made this perfect for dipping with the provided bread. Yes, there were actual crab meat pieces in the broth so don't be fooled in thinking that you were only getting the essence. 6. Dungeness crab BLT (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=YHGJndPXykdcU1gqUNv3VA), toasted brioche, tomato aioli, nueske's bacon, butter lettuce, seasoned fries. Like the pasta, I ate a small portion and enjoyed this. The crab is presented in a salad like mixture with celery and, I believe, pimentos that meshed well with the pickled onions and tomato slice. 7. BBQ pulled pork sandwich (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=lPMfzHX4uEjPe4VU5ZenQw), slow roasted heritage pork shoulder, bbq chips, slaw, sweet tangy bbq sauce, seasoned fries; I was stuffed so I only munched on the fries. 8. Strawberry yuzu sorbet (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=lv6gYmTqSWLR-y7dov5YHA); being homemade, this was the perfect ending, refreshing and light, after a heavy meal. Thinking it might be better inside, I was very happy to dine outside as the heat lamps were sufficient to make it comfortable. With the view and the ability to watch as the weather changed while we ate was an experience. Big thanks to all of the staff, from our greeter Jesse to the bus staff and Masha G. And, of course, bit thanks to Chef Michael for providing us a wonderful meet with an unexpected treat to start. Even with no reservations on a busy weekend I had to wait around 15 minutes before I was seated. It would have definitely been worth the wait if it took longer for the next available table. The service and the staff are extremely hospitable. They held on to my bags and made sure I had an outdoors seat. The food was better than what I heard/expected. Definitely a top 5 fav, cant wait to go back and try more on the menu. read more

Located at the Monterey plaza hotel. Large menu to try. We were really excited and over ordered. We ordered : Crab dip - 10/10 came with garlic bread. Really good with large chunks of crab. Clam chowder - 10/10. Really tasty, and creamy. Cioppino - 9/10. Packed with seafood and a large garlic bread Seafood salad - 9/10. My husband enjoyed this Chicken strips and fries - for my toddler. He liked the fries a lot. They have high chairs for children and also coloring paper and pencils. The food was amazing and portions were generous. Food and the views! Just wow! We got there around 9am on a Friday morning, no wait. We chose to sit outside on the patio closest to the end so we could have some nice views of the bay. It was such a beautiful day too, no clouds in the sky. I had a sweet tooth that morning so I ordered the Belgian waffle with a side of eggs and bacon. You get 4 big slices of bacon and I honestly wanted to eat them all. Great quality bacon! The waffle paired well with the strawberries and cream. I'm a big coffee connoisseur and the coffee served there is also rich and so satisfying I had to ask what they were brewing. Our server was pretty busy but checked on us when he could. Before anything else is said, it must be noted: get the Warm Dungeness crab dip. Among all of the great dishes my partner and I sampled this was the standout -- warm, cheesy, garlic-y, and chockfull of a respectable amount of crab meat scooped onto soft, buttery bread -- I would come back to Schooners for this dish alone. Schooners is a cute, waterside restaurant partially hidden inside of a Cannery Row hotel that comes adjourned with heated patio seating and crashing Ocean waves. Nothing we tried was disappointing, whether you're looking for pasta, pork ribs, or ceviche, there is a dish, and a strong drink, for anyone in your party. We had mentioned in our reservation that we were celebrating a 7 year anniversary and the staff was very hospitable, friendly, and even brought out a little brownie dessert on the house. I treated myself to dinner here to carb load before the Big Sur marathon and omg, it was everything and more. Service was amazing. I was seated quickly indoors with an ocean view. Waiter came by promptly with a menu and water. I got a drink to treat myself and ordered the gnocchi and burrata. Then treated myself to their cheesecake with coffee and it was just superb. I would absolutely recommend this place for a fancy fine dining experience. read more
