My family and I came to visit Monterey Bay for Mother's Day weekend and it was a nice and relaxing dinner. We booked Stokes Adobe for table of 8 (including two small toddlers) They brought out little coloring paper & crayons which was super nice of them. We were seated in a private area which was nice since our two small toddlers like to walk around and it's less distraction. We did family style and ordered a bit of everything! Crispy potatoes: Love the carbs! The potatoes were crispy and delicious. The lemon truffle crema sauce was so yummy! Oysters: Definitely order half shell oysters! They were delicious! Hamachi: This was okay, nothing special to be honest sinc Mussels: This one was also delicious as well. It was made with white wine and tomato broth with butter, shallot, garlic. Beets salad: You can't go wrong with ordering a beet salad! The honey vinaigrette was delicious! Santa Cruz King Salmon: This dish was simple but tasty. The Meyer lemon sauce went well with the salmon. 12oz Pork chop: The meat was soft and easy to bite into. The cauliflower puree was delicious! Snake River American Wagyu: I thought the steak was okay. It was a bit too rare for me personally but my husband liked it! Brussels sprouts: Yummmm! Love the crispy Brussels sprouts. Overall service was great and the food was good. The only downside of the night was not getting the duck liver mousse toast. Not sure why the order went through when we mentioned in the beginning but hope to try it next time we're in town. read more

Well, I guess the first sign something was awry was the restaurant being empty on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. But 1) this place came highly recommended from a few forum threads from about a year ago (argh) and 2) they charge a $25 cancellation fee for reservations. I'll start with the ok -- the pasta wasn't bad. But $35 for each is a bit ridiculous. Michelin guide spots in LA and SF don't charge that much. Not bad though, which is pretty much the only win for the night. The wine pours are truly embarrassing and the restaurant should be ashamed of them. I haven't seen such a small, IKEA sized glass since I was in college. The worst part is that patrons ordering a bottle of wine had the normal wine glasses you expect. So they have those glasses, they just choose to nickel and dime those paying by glass. That alone is just such bad form. The service of course was the atrocious cherry on top. Our server wasn't egregiously awful so I won't name him... but he forgot multiple parts of our order, brought a drink out after we'd finished our meals (because it took so long), and gave us the wrong receipt at the end. Mind you, there were only 2 other tables in our section. Yikes. I'm guessing this place was a gem and a hot spot a while ago, but since then, people moved on. In the meantime, I have a feeling they're struggling because of how much they nickel and dime their few existing patrons. It's a sinking ship and I hope management rights it... Visited this restaurant for Mother's day. Ironically, even though I have lived in the area for decades somehow I missed this one. Saw some reviews and photos on Yelp and decided to give it a try. As my reviews tend to be lengthy let me summarize up front and add the details for those more interested. Service was 5 star, Ambience 4.5 star, and for Food I want to go higher but for reasons I will go into I must stay with 4 star. And because I think the food is the most relevant measurement I chose 4 star. The experience overall was great. We reserved indoor as Monterey can get a bit chilly but once on ground and with outdoor fireplaces and heaters it was the better option. And with a 3.5 yo in tow the outdoor really was the better option. It gave her freedom of movement and the ability to be more of a noisy child than the indoor would permit. Our waitress was attentive and great, the seating by the fire was a bit hard but she brought out blankets that could add warmth or in our case cushion to make them less noticeable. We ordered basic pasta for our child and let me just say the portion would have fed two adult men. Nothing amazing but it was palatable and she enjoyed it. We ordered drinks to include one of their specialties and it was enjoyed. And we started off with an order of the oysters. They were fresh, well presented and offered multiple options to flavor the oysters. For main courses I selected the Hen House homemade pasta with mushrooms and saw you could add scallops for $17.00 and it sounded brilliant. The dish was flavorful, creamy and only surprising in that they delivered one stunning scallop on a side dish. Slightly confused I remarked, "ummm is this the $17 scallop". Which in retrospect I would note I really wanted to see the menu again because I sincerely believe they likely advertised it as a singular "Scallop" which leaves only myself to blame. In all honesty the scallop is probably the second best scallop I have had in my life (Libertine Social in Vegas is hands tied the absolutely best to date). But I digress... I enjoyed the dish, mourned the single scallop and cleaned my plate. We also ordered the Focaccia Bread and butter starter. Let me just say that I love bread, probably more than I should and fresh baked focaccia is at the top of my list. I am accustomed to the outside being a bit crispy but the inside being pure pillowy heaven. They appear to cut them in slices and then bake them or toast them slightly before service. Definitely not a fan of toast, or crunchy bread it was not a high point but again well presented and despite my preference I did eat it with my pasta. Lastly my partner had the Wagyu beef, the description sounded great and the presentation was there but I think there are moments that when you read a menu you envision the finished product and let's just say it felt diminished in my minds eye. Flavors aside it was well cooked and the sides tasted fine. I just felt like I heard that grating voice from the 80s or 90's..."where's the beef". Now I say all of that to provide my view on the overall experience but I would say they are definitely worth the experience but go in knowing it will be a bit pricey. And to be fair if it's beef you are looking for I recall seeing a massive 32ounce porterhouse on the menu. But the price matched its size. In the end it was a strong 4 star experience and "scallop" aside if 4.5 was an option I would probably give it. Just not a 5. Brought my partner here for his birthday and we had a wonderful celebratory meal here. The restaurant is literally a converted house so the interior feels very cozy and homey. We were seated upstairs and had a view overlooking the bar and downstairs entry area. Our server was fantastic, chatting with us and frequently checking in on how we were doing. We got the Duck Liver Mousse Toast as an appetizer, which was delicious, and the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina as our main, which was the perfect balance of well-cooked meat with flavorful side dishes of broccolini and potatoes. First time here, loved the historical building with all its uniqueness! The service from the front desk to the waitstaff (Jane I believe) was excellent. Had a wonderful and balanced Cremant sparkling wine from FR. We ordered a César salad focaccia bread, two pastas and a mussels dish. All were tasty, the Hen of the wood pasta and mussels were my favorite. The focaccia bread came out room temperature and dry or stale, our least favorite of the night. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner last night. What a romantic experience. The ambiance is gorgeous; it's been a minute since I've seen real candles lit at a table. There are different rooms, and we were seated in one that had a lovely bookshelf beside us. Parking is not too difficult; there's plenty of street parking! Our server was so sweet without being intrusive, it can feel a bit awkward at times going to a restaurant when the servers are required to ask how we're doing every .5 seconds. That was not the case here. We ordered the Caviar Service, Crispy Potatoes with Lemon Truffle Crema, and a Duck Liver Mousse Toast for starters. As for our shared entree, we picked the Big Sur Chanterelle Tagliolini. Our server made sure that the pacing that the food would be coming out at would be to our preference, and communicated it nicely. Which, by the way, all came out in a timely manner. The Caviar Service was beautiful. I appreciated how they plated it all. It comes with 30g of white sturgeon caviar resting on ice, chives, creme fraiche, potato chips, and blinis. Tasted great, nothing to complain about, we had fun with it. The Crispy Potatoes with Lemon Truffle Crema were delicious! Crisped up to perfection. It was definitely a bit filling for a starter, but great nonetheless. The Duck Liver Mousse Toast? I'd write home about that. I loved how the vinaigrette sweetened and brightened up those flavors, and the parsley went beautifully with it all. The thinly sliced shallots were gorgeous. Our Big Sur Chanterelle Tagliolini had housemade pasta, and you could really taste a difference! I'm a big texture girl, so it made the experience so enjoyable. Chanterelles are my favorite mushrooms, so I was so happy with how they melted in my mouth. 10/10! For dessert, I decided to go with the very popular Yelp review: The Chocolate Budini! I agree, it is probably one of the best desserts that I've ever had. The textures of a delicate, crispy wafer with the little chocolate balls and soft mousse come together for a great mouthfeel. It's balanced, not too sweet or bitter. I decided to try the pistachio gelato since I love anything pistachio flavored, and it did not disappoint. Overall, amazing experience. Based on the menu and the ambiance we narrowed down our options to this place. Service was great. The only complaint was that several of the drinks and menu options were different than what was reflected online. Appetizers- we had the shrimp tostada and the octopus. Both were great and we would order them again. Mains- I was looking forward to having the halibut and Luli Pinot noir but these options were not available. Instead I had the salmon and it was amazing! I don't know if it was deep fried but it was crispy on all sides. I will be dreaming about this salmon. My husband had the cavatelli and he really enjoyed that. Dessert- I forget the name of our drink but it was like an espresso martini on the rocks with a vanilla foam and orange zest on top. My partner and I stumbled on Stokes Adobe on a must try restaurant so we decided to eat here while in town. We were expecting small portions but was pleasantly surprised by the generous portions. We ordered the best salad, chicken Milanese, and pappardelle bolognese. Our favorite was the beat salad! The chicken Milanese was well cooked- it was juicy and was a good size. Our server, Grace, was professional and proficient. Hubby tried the duck mousse over toast. The toast wasn't crunchy toasted as he expected. It was more a slice of bread. The mousse was sweet but good. I ordered a Caesar salad. Sadly, the lettuce was more soggy than crisp and the dressing had too lemon, making it tart tasting. OMG OMG OMG HOW HAVE I NOT BEEN HERE!! I reserve the integrity of my 5 star reviews and this absolutely deserves it. The definition of California cuisine. Everything is fresh with the rotating seasonal menu. The pate mouse toast was the star the saltiness was so good with the caramelized onions to add some sweetness. The pasta was a unique flavor and had a bite to it. Steak was perfectly tender, seasoned well, and loved the veggies with it. Octopus was a tad tough, but flavor was great and the sauce had this rich flavor to it. Exceptional cocktails and wine offerings. Service was top notch we ate here on a weeknight with our 1-year old and they picked up and replaced our utensils when my daughter threw them on the floor (whoops). Also a decently thick layer of the liver mousse was included which we appreciate. - Patagonian Shrimp Tostada (5/5): This dish was amazing! A little spicy, sour, refreshing and even slightly creamy from the avocado sauce included made this dish so well balanced and creative. The shrimp was also so sweet and fresh that we just have to call it out. The tostada was well done too and very crunchy. Overall (5/5): Stokes Adobe is a pretty classy location, with friendly and welcoming service perfect for date vibes. Since we came early we were pretty much the only ones there so it was pretty quiet and private. There's parking available too. While even the happy hour menu items aren't the cheapest we did find them more filling than expected and they were of very high quality. Randomly stopped in for dinner after a long drive up from Orange County. We chose to sit outside with our dogs, and the setup did not disappoint: fire pits, heat lamps, and that cozy beach city ambiance that makes you want to stay a little longer. As soon as we were seated, Jane tended to us. She was truly the highlight of our experience at Stokes. Knowledgeable, warm, attentive. The food? I genuinely cannot overstate how good it was. I had to ask about the fried potatoes, which were impossibly crispy--like, duck-fat-labored-over-for-hours crispy. But it turns out they're just regular potatoes fried in regular oil at an extremely high temp. No tricks, just potato magic. Either that or they lied, which I totally understand because I'd gatekeep these potatoes too. The portion of the duck terrine was easily triple what I've seen anywhere else. And the octopus--my god. Seafood by the sea. Who would've thought? So tender and succulent, underscored by the punchy Romesco. Pretty sure I ascended to a different dimension. We ate here twice when it was still "Restaurant 1833" and I've always wanted to come back, we had friends visiting who wanted to take their kids to Monterey Bay Aquarium and this was the perfect spot for a kid-friendly and interesting dinner location with high quality food to treat our guests. It's a 2 story historical Adobe and you can dine in different rooms each time you visit, it is also supposedly haunted and we told the kids ghosts would be helping make the food taste good. The interior is well-done with some of the old-charm retained but some nice additions with more modern furniture, light decor, and some paintings on the wall. Duck Rillete: Mashed duck meat with duck fat and chives. Served with house cooked vinegar chips, great appetizer the whole table enjoyed. They brought more chips out when we finished a lot of the chips but still had some Rillete left. Citrus Salad: Oranges, grapefruit, pomegranate, mint, and toasted pecans tossed in a light vinaigrette. Light and refreshing but no greens with it. Seared Octopus: Octopus topped with olive tapenade and sitting on a 'Nduja, spicy italian sausage, aioli. The olives and aioli were quite strong when paired with the more delicate Octopus. The aioli also started separating and had an odd appearance but it tasted fine. Bone-in Pork Chop: The pork was very nicely cooked, one of the most tender and soft porks I've ever had. The apple and apple butter were sweet and I know apple and pork are a normal pairing but would have preferred it without it. American Wagyu Steak: Very good, the kids ate a lot of this and we should have ordered 2 of these and less of the kid menu items. tldr; Incredible food, attentive service and tons of seating, although parking might be an issue. I was looking for a place with decent food in Monterey after a long drive on a Friday evening, and was not disappointed. Stokes Adobe is a very large restaurant - I believe it occupies what is essentially an entire landed property / house. There is a large outdoor area that, when I arrived, had plenty of guests mingling for an event. I initially thought that meant I might not get seating (restaurant closed for event) but I was wrong. I was greeted and promptly seated in one of the many areas in the restaurant. I was quickly attended to by a very friendly waitress, and put in my order for a Halibut Bourride. After that I asked about dessert recommendations, and was recommended the Beignets or the Chocolate Budino. I chose the former as I wanted a lighter option. Halibut Bourride - 5.5/5 - This was an incredible dish. The Halibut was perfectly cooked, and th soup it was in (I assume the saffron soubise) was a prefect pairing with the fish, with deliciously roasted scallops and shrimp. Savory and slightly tangy, it was an absolute delight! Dulce De Leche Beignets - 5/5 - This was another nice surprise. Since it's a ball of dough, I thought it might be a little heavy, but these were delightfully fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness. I consumed these with gusto! Enjoyed Stokes' HH/happy hour with some girlfriends, but found the experience just so so. We had reservations, since we knew Stokes has a historic and likely popular vibe with the locals. But we were happy to see that their outdoor patio (with heaters and firepits) was not packed! We all enjoyed some cocktails, and we chowed on some complimentary potato chips, while waiting on our HH salad and pizzas (margherita and potato fingerling 'za). The cocktail menu was quite avant-garde. I had a Oaxacan rum cherry drink, it was alright. My friend had the "NY sour" which was red wine and bourbon. The tequila ranchwater was a classic and had less confusing flavors going on. In all, the aesthetic really is what you're there for--very elevated and bougie. But the experience itself was just alright. Def a place to come if you want to enjoy the fancier vibe without breaking the bank. Good for groups, and parking we found in their small lot. Had a refreshing, amazing dinner at Stokes Adobe! We decided to make a reservation here to end our night after taking a day trip to Carmel. I had seen good things about the restaurant online, and was eager to check it out -- it was also one of the only spots with reservations open on 1-day notice. At the restaurant, the space had a great ambiance and was extremely spacious. We did end up waiting almost half the meal before the drinks came out, which was a little unusual since those usually make it out first. For food, we chose the cavatelli, salanova salad, Scottish salmon, and ended it with the affogato. It just so happened that all of our picks came out to be green, light, and enjoyable without being too heavy. We weren't too hungry, but the crisp and citrusy flavors made everything so easy to eat and enjoy. The crispy skin on the salmon was a standout, and the only "fault" was that there were so many peas in the dish, it was all that was left at the end. We split 1 cocktail and 1 mocktail, and both were light and really balanced as well. All in all, we had a great dinner and I would come back to try other seasonal items! Dinner here was impeccable! I was in town visiting and my friend insisted on coming here for my birthday dinner. We started with the Seared Octopus, which was uniquely tasty in the best way. For my entree, I ordered the Tagliatelle Bolognese and one word... WOW. It was rich, bold and absolutely delicious. I dream about this dish all the way from Florida. Highly recommend! My bff took me here for my birthday dinner and it was okay. Service was good until it was busy and it took 10 minutes to either get the dessert menu / the check. We came at around 5pm so the restaurant was empty. The restaurant is a big house and the vibe was cool. We were seated in the back of the house. The menu is fairly small, which isn't always a bad thing. We ordered: Corn bisque Squash Pasta Pork chop The corn bisque and the squash were good. The pasta has really good texture but I did not like the sauce at all, it has a taste I can't describe but I did not enjoy it. The pork chop was cooked well and it was juicy, but the layer of black sesame on top was confusing and unnecessary. Overall, it was fine, but I don't think I'd return. The scallop aguachile was amazing. The chili and acid gave it an almost fizzy quality. I could have eaten three of these. The 32 oz porterhouse was mostly good. Unfortunately they overcooked it. We ordered medium rare. Surprising because they serve it sliced. I mentioned it to our server but they said it was how they cook it for medium rare. I can accept that there's a range for medium rare but I don't think that should ever involve brown in the center in several pieces (majority of the steak). In any case, it was tender enough on the filet side and we didn't want to wait another 20-30 min. Overall, parts of the steak were well seasoned and tender, and other parts were not. Disappointing for a $155 dish, but it was close to being really good. Came here for a fancy birthday dinner and it did NOT disappoint. Loved the layout and walking thru the rooms to get your beautiful table. The ambiance was lovely. We started with the octopus- which was good- well cooked and very interesting presentation. We also got the potatoes on the server's recommendation and THEY WERE AMAZING! I ordered the seared Alaskan halibut as my main and it was cooked PERFECTLY! The crispy potatoes were a nice accompaniment. My boyfriend got the wagyu and while a steak is never the first thing I'd order on the menu, I will say, I tried and it was also cooked perfectly. I probably could've eaten the whole dish! And we ended the night with the dulce de leche beignets. I've had real beignets in New Orleans and while I wouldn't call these beignets- I will say that these cinnamon sugar *donuts* were little pockets of light airy heaven! I really enjoyed dinner here! I feel like there aren't too many great spots to eat around here, but this feels like a gem. I had a great time with their delicious food and staff. Another fantastic dinner at Stokes Adobe! When we are in the Monterey/Carmel area, we will always eat at least once there but this time we ate twice! The service is always excellent and the food is wonderful! I started with cram corn soup which hit the spot on a chilly evening. Then I had my favorite, homemade pasta with bouillabaisse sauce! Then finished with the. Chocolate Budino and paired it with the Rusty Cup, a fantastic drink made with Johnnie Walker Black Label, Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey and Drambuie. They have several places you can sit and have dinner depending on your preferences and occasion. You will just need to pick the ambience you prefer. If you sit outside, they do have blankets. Came here for dinner at 5 on a Tuesday night and was seated right away. The space is beautiful and upscale but still relaxing, comforting, and welcoming to children and families. The food was wonderful. Got the tagliatelle with a side of squash and corn and potatoes off the kids meal, which was a hit with the kids and the adults. Also got the sea bass tostada, panzanella, and the halibut, and everything was fresh and flavorful. So far it's been the best meal of the trip. Highly recommend. read more

Maybe the best restaurant in Monterey, everything is top notch, and the fact they don't have Michelin stars is mind blowing. The attention to detail, the ingredients, the location, the service and the fun fire pits under the Monterey sky night... so highly impressive. 10/10 will return. read more

Found this place on the Michelin Guide. One word: Exceptional. From the friendly staff, to the cute atmosphere (formerly a residence), to the craft cocktails, to the lightest focaccia bread you have EVER had, to the mixed greens salad with dressing that can't be described, to the homemade pasta, to the seafood. Unreal. Even the dessert (affogato) was on point! Stokes Adobe just cracked our top 25 in the state. And we eat out A LOT. Enjoy!! read more

All restaurants start with the building in which they reside and Stokes Adobe found the most amazing building to plant roots in. Just walking up to the building you already know that you're going to have an amazing dinner. The food was perfect, yellowfin was the start to an amazing meal and it was capped off with the tagliatelle. Cooked to perfection....a true joy to eat!!! Service.... It's great, just not perfect. A few minor flaws kept it from getting the perfect 5 out of 5. The food is there, the ambiance is there ... the service just needs a very small adjustment and this restaurant is getting its Michelin star. Perfect spot for happy hour! Had a blast with my date ordering cocktails, appetizers, and mains -- all were great for sharing and all the staff were really friendly too. Even the complimentary chips were delicious! Duck liver mousse and pasta hit the spot; the four cheese pizza was a bit too funky for me but I really enjoyed the crust. I think the pizza could've also benefitted from a fresh element, especially since one of the cheeses was so strong (either fresh basil, or even a drizzle of basil or chili olive oil). Ambiance is lovely and perfect for a date night, plus there's free street parking. read more
