She got us to our table quickly. Service was also prompt and on point. The restaurant is clean and beautiful, not too loud, nice date night ambience. Finally, the food!!! Wow, just wow! My husband and I shared a salad, a couple pastas and clam chowder. The chowder was the best I'd had in Monterey on our trip-the most tender clams, inspiring even. My entree was wonderful, but 2 others in our group of 6 described their entree's as "okay". My wife had the seabass special. The fish was perfect but the gnocchi was "just okay". Another person had the short rib which was presented perfectly. The meat was tender but he said it was extremely salty. Everyone else really enjoyed their food. It was crowded but they found a table for us outside. We were in the sidewalk dealing with foot traffic and cars but it was fine. Our server was extremely attentive and very helpful. I'm back!! I love this place and always make a point to come here every time I'm in Pacific Grove. I just love the vibe. Make sure to make reservations because there's always a line. I feel like the menu has changed and the food got even better. Jordan was our server. He was wonderful. He was polite and always checked on us. There was a hiccup with my cocktail and he followed up on it with me. He was dismayed that the person who served our cocktails didn't inform me that they ran out of one of the key ingredients. So I ordered a different cocktail. This time, it took a long time to arrive but Jordan stayed on top of it and apologized. The food here is excellent! The salads are really good. Not your regular bagged salad. The pastas are AMAZING! So full of flavor. I was wowed! There was a mixup with my salad, but Jordan took care of it immediately. We ordered: * Viola - Delicate, light but strong! * Fried Artichoke - So yummy! Not greasy. Love the 3 sauces. * Orange & Beet Salad - lightly dressed. Tangy and sweet. Great meal and great service from Avery at the bar! We came for dinner without a reservation the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend. Even though reservations were plentiful during the day, by the time we arrived for an early dinner, the only availability was at the bar. While this might not seem like the best spot in the house, it ended up being great because we had a view of the pasta making station, which was active for the entirety of our visit. The menu was huge and just about everything sounded good, so of course picking what I wanted was not easy. I ended up going with the Lamb parpardelle, which was a nice large portion and quite delicious. Loved the handmade pasta. My mom got the braised short ribs and was very happy with her meal. They had a great wine selection and cocktail menu with specialty drinks, classics, and spritzes. I ended up with a glass of wine that would pair well with my dinner, though it was so good that it was hard to make it last all the way until the meal came out. We chose this place on the recommendation of a former resident. We weren't disappointed! It starts off with the very friendly service. We were given good advice to spend our money on another pasta dish than on an appetizer, given we were a family of four hungry people. The homemade pasta made such a difference! Each of us had our favorite, though we liked everything. I enjoyed the carbonara, the consistency of the noodles was something I'd never really had, it was marvelous. My younger son selected the cacio e pepe, enjoying the tasty mushroom and sausage dish. The older boy selected the orecchiette, besides a good pasta the chicken had a grilled flavor that stood out. My wife favored the rigatoni, which featured a really good rago sauce. Keeping in mind it's all homemade fare, the price is justified. When you enter, you may see them making fresh pasta or gnocchi in the front. All pasta is handmade here. Service was great; we sat in a private little nook area. We had a digestif flight(for hubby), AGNOLOTTI ALLA NONNA pasta, and a Caesar salad. Food was absolutely amazing. Salad was fresh with in house Caesar dressing (made traditionally with anchovies). I can see why this restaurant is voted Best Italian in Monterey Bay... their handmade pasta was phenomenal. You can absolutely tell that this bread is baked fresh in house daily and was delicious the burrata appetizer mouthwatering ,fresh & crisp just wonderful. The balsamic made me crave for more. It just was really that good. But now for the absolute star of the show the vodka pasta. Life-changing. I've been thinking about it for the last two weeks and I need to go back. I made a date with my mom next weekend to take her. I already know what I'll be having. I know I know we should all try something new but let me tell you it was that phenomenal. Great Italian spot in Pacific Grove, very close to Monterey. We came in with a same day reservation on a Friday evening during Mother's Day weekend. It was quite busy, but we were seated right away. Very cute restaurant, intimate. To the right of the host, you can watch them make their fresh pasta. We started with the beet salad. Delicious. The citrus dressing really brightened up the greens. For entrees, we both ordered pastas. The portions are huge! We took home half, which was perfect for lunch the next day. We ordered the cacio e pepe and the carbonara. Both were delicious. In town visiting friends and they took me to this Italian spot. I already knew it was going to be great as there was a line of people waiting to be seated. As you walk inside, there are guys making fresh pasta. Very rustic and quaint atmosphere had me feeling that I was in the home of family. Service was outstanding and they were very attentive. We ordered the Italian ceaser salad and Crab Arancini for starters. I loved that the ceaser salad was romaine heads and the crab arancini was amazing especially the sauce! We were looking for restaurants in Monterey where we could feed our 1-year-old well and still have a great meal ourselves, and il vecchio surely delivered! They didn't have the focaccia that day, but the bread with balsamic olive oil with peppers was amazing. My favorite was the vegetarian pappardelle, as both the pasta and the tomatoes/vegetables tasted so fresh and light. We ordered the grilled chicken thigh for the baby to eat along with our food; it was healthy yet tasty. Ragu was just okay though. We were so full by the time the sorbet came out. With cute decoration paying homage to most likely the owners heritage. il vecchio gave off where you go to get authentic Italian pasta! And when I saw authentic you can literally watch them make pasta from scratch at their pasta making station! The server was polite and kind to our large party of 10. We added a chicken thigh which came on the side and is the same no matter what dish you order (parents split a different dish and their chicken was identical) but perfectly cooked, not dry at all and really is seasoned well to serve as a basic addition to any entree which i appreciate. The bread was nicely toasted, the tomatoes were sweet and the jelly things on top added a nice addition of flavor. All the flavors mixed really well. Artichoke: they were nicely fried and not too oily. It came with three delicious sauces. The lemon aioli was our favorite but they were all good. The pesto tastes really fresh. Pesto gnocchi: this was OK. The sausage it came with seemed out of place, not the greatest. Chicken Marsala: the chicken was so tender and juicy. The flavors were delicious! The mash potatoes were simple but good. It comes in a hot cast iron which is a great touch. Vanilla gelato: delicious! It comes with chunks of biscotti which were a nice addition. And caramel sauce which was not too sweet but great flavor. The Italian soda wasn't great, not much flavor or carbonation. It is close to cannery row and other attractions. We were lucky enough to attend a wedding rehearsal dinner at Il Vecchio in Pacific Grove, and what a treat it was! This charming, lively Italian restaurant served a family-style tasting menu featuring many of their signature dishes, and every course was delicious. My favorite appetizer was the Caprese Burrata. The creamy burrata with roasted tomatoes, balsamic pearls, and fresh basil was absolutely wonderful. We also enjoyed the beet and goat cheese salad and the fried artichoke hearts. The Orecchiette Boscaiola was one of the standouts of the evening. The fresh house-made pasta with smoked Molinari sausage, peas, and a garlic cream sauce was rich without being too heavy. The Heirloom Spaghetti Pesto was equally delicious, and the Cheesy Garlic Bread was the perfect complement to both pasta dishes. The Grilled Prawns & Scallops were cooked perfectly--tender, flavorful, and not overdone. Dessert was a light, creamy Tiramisu Cake, which was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. One of the most enjoyable parts of the evening was watching fresh pasta being made in the front window. It was fascinating to see shells, rigatoni, pappardelle, and ravioli being handcrafted. Knowing that all of their pasta is made in-house makes the meal even more special. Chef and co-owner Stefen Shatto and his mother, Kelly, were gracious hosts, and the waitstaff and bar team handled our large group with friendly, attentive service and impressive efficiency. Our dinner cost $230.00, including tip, and unfortunately, the service fell short. The server took my credit card without a word, and as we left (the manager/hostess) saw us depart, she didn't say anything. Grabbed a last minute reservation here showed up half an hour early and they still sat us! So major props to the staff for that. We got the bread service which was a great way to start the meal. The olives were beautifully brined, sour and salty, and the oil they were in was great with the bread too! All the ingredients just tasted high quality, especially the olive oil. I got the spicy squid ink scampi which was such a treat. The sauce was creamy and flavorful and the noodles were firm and salty. ***Probably*** the best traditional Italian food around, I'll let you know when we find a better place! In our experience they are pretty family-friendly, especially if you make a reservation! The live music is always fun too. I just can't give 5 stars because every time we order the Lasagna Romana, it comes out slightly different. The first time it had a lot of meat and sauce, and the second time it had some vegetables that were not present in the dish the first time! The third and fourth time it was weirdly creamy and the sauce was lighter in color. I'm not sure if they're experimenting, or if the recipe is dependent upon who's in the kitchen, but either way they need to sort that out. Unfortunately I don't have pictures because I never in my life imagined I would have to document the consistency of a lasagna. On a separate note, we used to order the Caesar salad, but since they stopped chopping the lettuce and started leaving it whole, we've stopped getting it. Finally, the desserts are really good, but I would advise you share them with your favorite person, the portions are large and you might not finish one on your own! read more

I had read online that this was one of the more popular spots in Carmel, but had gone downhill in recent years. Whenever I've read stuff like that, in my experience, the place is usually still very good. We found il vecchio to just be "ok", though. The service was great, and the drinks were pretty good, but the food we found to be pretty average. Starting with the bread service, the whole table agreed the oil/balsamic mixture had way too much balsamic and not enough oil. Then the pastas, out of 6 of us we ended up with several of the carbonara and rigatoni (as pictured). We found them to be pretty average. The carbonara seemed to have mostly crispy prosciutto and minimal guanciale, if any, which was a huge disappointment. It almost felt like bacon in the dish rather than thick, distinctly flavored/textured guanciale. The poached egg we found unnecessary in an already egg-based sauce. For the rigatoni, it was fine but nothing out of this world. It also didn't help that our food got cold quickly because we were sitting near the kitchen, and they kept opening the back door probably because it's hot in the kitchen, but it made our table and food cold quite quickly. Anyway, we had a good time and our server was great. Just disappointing in comparison to other Italian in the north east where we're from, and minimal seafood options which was surprising for Carmel. The first things we noticed was the ambiance and beautiful decor in the restaurant. There were many pastas to choose from and I was having difficulties deciding, but the waiter made some excellent suggestions. We ordered the caesar salad and foccocia bread for starters. The dressing on the salad tasted homemade and had the right amount of savory and creaminess. The fococcia was soft and springy which paired well with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For main course we ordered the pomodoro gnocchi and rigatoni ragu. The textures of the pastas were phenomenal with just the right amount of bite. The ragu was slightly heavier than the gnocchi but was still delicious. Both pastas had the right amount of sauce and didn't overshadow the pasta itself. I had the mushroom and sausage Orecchiette and it was sublime, smooth and enormously satisfying. The surprise of the night was the Botticelli cocktail and the burrata appetizer with micro basil, grilled tomatoes and balsamic pearls. There was confusion among the wait staff when our original waiter said he was released due to it being slow. It suddenly got busy. But we were assigned a new waiter. Overall, great Italian food and lovely ambiance. We had a reservation and they were busy even on a weekday night, so make a reservation if you can. We enjoyed all our dishes including the lamb pappardelle, the orange and beet salad, the caprese burrata, and the osso buco gnocchi. Everything tasted great and was a decent portion size for the price. They even offered more bread for the burrata when they noticed we had finished the pieces but still had most of the dish left. The cocktails were pretty good as well, though we had some confusion with the server about one of the drinks (supposedly the menu changed recently so they were confused) that required back and forth three times. Once we finally got the right drink, it was a lovely cocktail. Now, we ordered a gelato creation as a dessert to share for the table, and that was the biggest disappointment of the meal. This "creation" is pre-made and stored in the fridge. The gelato was hard (almost frozen) and flavors that were written on the description were misleading and not at all what we expected. We expected pistachio gelato and instead got vanilla gelato with pistachios (which is fine if this was clearly described). Especially for $12, we were expecting fresh scoops of gelato and not a frozen sundae. Definitely a bummer to end our meal. All in all, food and beverages were great, would definitely come back for those. I'd skip the dessert options though. Parking can be tricky but we nabbed a spot on the street right in front. From the outside it seems like a small and cozy restaurant. However once you are indoors it is much larger. When we visited it was very busy so I would definitely recommend getting a reservation. I loved the decor and seating. The staff was so pleasant and had good recommendations. We started with some wine I had a delicious moscato and my hubby had a Cabernet. For an appetizer we had the fried asparagus and it was so fresh and full of flavor. The breading was not overly powerful or too much. They had 3 dipping sauces. I really liked the basil one, hubby thought it was too powerful. The lemon aioli was also very good but I absolutely loved the basil one. The red one was just okay to me but hubby liked that one the most. For our entrees I had the Saffron Seafood Pasta and hubby had the Carbonara Pasta dish. For mine it tasted like the seafood was just delivered right out of the ocean. The shrimp was huge, the scallops were plentiful and there was a lot of squid. The papardelle pasta was out of this world. Briney and creamy in the best way. Hubby enjoyed his dish but one bite of mine and he had food envy. We both agreed that tomatoes in my dish weren't needed. But it didn't take away my enjoyment of the dish. For dessert hubby had the tiramisu and I had the San Pietro sundae, minus whip cream, a vanilla gelato with pistachios, caramel coated almonds and salted caramel. This place was great!!! It's cute and has a nice cozy ambiance. We came here on a whim on Mother's Day for lunch. For apps we ordered the crab arancini (delish) and the Italian Caesar salad to share. Grandma got the lamb pappardelle, which she loved (I don't like lamb but still thought it was good) and mom got the truffle risotto, which she loved too! I got off the dinner menu their salmon with balsamic glaze, it was delish!! I will definitely be coming back for the salmon and to try their poached pear salad! We didn't have any room for dessert, since dinner the portions were big and I brought mom and grandma choc covered strawberries. But next time we will try and save room for dessert! The chef came out to the table and said hello, which was nice! And the waitress was good. But the parking you need to be careful about, there is street parking, but it's hard to come by. I found a parking lot next to the restaurant, but it was for another restaurant and there were signs warning me not to park there. But it was Sunday and Mother's Day, so I figured I would be fine. But I was wrong, I had a $50 ticket waiting for me from the city-which was my fault. Yum. 10 stars for the food. I got the caprese baratta salad, oh my it was very good. The pesto gnocci with sausage was great too and the the dessert, a tall glass of chocolate, cherries, ice cream, whip cream. I was stuffed when I left. They have live jazz at 6pm too. I came here with a party of 7 for dinner on a Sunday night. It was really busy. Thankfully we made a reservation ahead of time. Our table was ready for us upon arrival. Our waitress was very busy but not very attentive to our table. There were several moments we tried to get her attention and she wouldn't look our direction or come see if we needed anything. At one point, a member of my party had to get up and find someone to help us. Perhaps they need more servers working? We ordered bread for the table and it took a very long time for this to arrive. Our meals ended up taking an hour. The menu had several great options. I opted for the gnocchi osso bucco and it was so good. The gnocchi were fresh and I devoured every bite!
