We came here for dinner during our trip to Monterey. Yelpers rave about the fish and chips, so we decided to try. I ordered the fish and chips and was not disappointed. It was very good as well as the fries which I asked for crispy. Compared to Shakespeare in San Diego, I would rate this slightly higher. My wife ordered the crab and shrimp sandwich which was okay. My son ordered a steak sandwich which he seemed to like but didn't finish. My wife also ordered the clam chowder and that turned out to be the highlight of the meal. All of us agreed that was the best clam chowder, better than two others we had on this trip, better than the ones we had in Seattle. We came here when in town for the aquarium (of course!) and found a quaint, authentic-feeling restaurant on the nondescript basement level of a building you would probably just walk by. Yet the ambiance, service, and food are very good! I love the various aspects of the decor, as well. Other than parking challenges on a busy night in the downtown, we were lucky to get a table for 5 relatively quickly, as this place isn't that large, with some additional bar seating, and it seems very popular. 5:30 was a great time, as we watched the waiting line grow longer after we were seated. Our server, Michael J., did a great job of greeting us, providing menus, and taking initial drink orders while we decided what to try. We decided to try BBQ honey wings, fried artichoke hearts, and onion rings for appetizers. The main courses were two orders of kids' cheese pizza and tater tots, a small dinner salad, a cup of New England-style clam chowder, and a NY Steak sandwich. The food came in a reasonable time, with appetizers and salad first, then the rest. The apps were good, but the onion rings were a bit greasy. The honey wings were well-liked, as well as the artichoke hearts, which, strangely, were not oily like the onion rings. Yummy! The cheese pizzas paired with tater tots were certainly different, but the pizza was more like a reheated frozen pizza. The tots were okay. The NY Steak sandwich was good as well, with a side of steak fries - obviously! Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would definitely consider dining here in the future when in town. read more

Went here cause the reviews were good, and it happened to be just across the street from my hotel, 20 second walk. I ordered my food to go and hung inside at the bar until it was ready. Ambiance and vibe were really good. The food however was very very bad. I got the Plymouth platter (fried fish, shrimp, scallops, and squid). They forgot the scallops. The fry on the other items was so dark, causing it all to taste bitter (likely dirty oil). The Cornish pastie pastry and accompanying gravy were good. The insides of it though.... So dry and flavorless. All you ended up tasting was the gravy. Food was a 1/5. Ambiance a 4/5. Rounded up to a 3/5 average as it is a bar first. read more

A solid pub and great food stop. First off a huge shoutout to the staff. This place was packed (and for good reason) but they really tried to accommodate everyone that came in. Our waitress was really into of it and got us seated, ordered, fed, and drinks out in an incredibly efficient time frame. I ordered the chowder and my partner order a BLT. The server Jacari was both professional and had a great sense of humor. Finding a kitchen open after 9 pm is a bit of a challenge especially on a Monday night. What a wonderful place for dinner after the Laguna Seca hill climb event. This place was very accommodating with allergies.. I have a severe allergy to shellfish so fish and chips was not an option or eating anything fried as they fry everything in the same oil they cook the shrimp in. So I had an amazing French dip and a salad with balsamic and ranch dressing and it was amazing. My husband and father in law had the fish and chips which they LOVED. Our waitress Jacque was very welcoming when we walked in, always made sure our drinks were full, had great conversations with us and always had a happy look on her face when she helped us. After dinner brought a tray of desserts to the table and asked us if we wanted dessert and of course we couldn't say no because it looks as delicious as everything else on their menu. If you are ever in Monterey and looking for a great place with great service I highly recommend this place. This place is a hidden gem. read more

Had a recent weekend in Monterey and as a British ex-pat I love a good British pub and this was across the street so we just had to check it out! To start off we each ordered a cup of clam chowder. I wasn't expecting much but it was actually some of the best clam chowder I've ever had! Lots of big chunks of clam and really well flavored. For my main meal I had the Cornish pastie, it's listed as an appetizer but I figured it would be filling enough along with the chowder and I was right! I walked away stuffed, couldn't even finish it! Love that they put gravy on the side, as it would even be served in England, although the gravy was very rich so I couldn't use a ton. I don't recall what my husband had but I do remember that he was very happy with his meal also. Even though we were stuffed, when the server mentioned sticky toffee pudding we had to try it as it's one of our favorite desserts. Really good too! Great spot with great food and great service. My boyfriend and I randomly came here for dinner last night. He found this spot on Yelp, and I was down for some fish & chips. We found parking at the garage nearby which payment is not required after 6pm. We waited about 15 minutes for a table, which a server needed to wipe it down first before she could seat us. The place was decked out in holiday decor. So festive! My bf got the Bloody Mary and George Iii Steak & Mushroom Pie. I got the Caramel Apple Martini and Fish & Chips. A cool place with friendly staffs and British theme decorations. Kids and pets friendly and they have outdoor seating with covers. We had their lamb shank and mushroom pie and some beers. Lamb shank was tasty but it was lukewarm when it arrived at the table; would have been better if it's hot, which would make each bite more tender. Food was reasonably priced though. Went out for lunch with my dive buddy to celebrate passing our open water certification (yay!!!!) and landed on Crown and Anchor. The British themed pub idea was very cool and we chose a spot in the back patio as the weather was beautiful that day. The fish and chips were so good! The crisp, the flavor of the batter, the texture, all so perfect. The New York steak sandwich was also very good. We ordered a spicy meatloaf to share because I had to try it. Now, the word "spicy" didn't mean hot, but more full of different spices. The steak itself really needed more seasoning, especially salt, as it tasted fairly flat. The garlic roll didn't complement the sandwich very well and felt like an odd pairing for the steak. On top of that, the sandwich had an excessive amount of onions and sauce, which ended up overpowering the steak rather than enhancing it. Overall, it just lacked balance and flavor throughout. The small side salad was actually one of the better parts of the meal, it was fresh and light, though that's not saying a whole lot compared to the rest of the dishes. Decided to stop by because a friend visiting from out of state hadn't tried California clam chowder and this place had outdoor dining available. Warning for those who may be sensitive to cigarette smoke like I am: they split the small patio into smoking and non-smoking areas, but you can still get a whiff of smoke depending on the wind. We initially were seated right by the smokers, and I was starting to get a headache/nausea. Luckily, another table opened up in the "non-smoking" section, so we moved ourselves there. Service was pretty bad, not gonna lie. We initially sat around for a solid 5 minutes at least and no one acknowledged us or gave us menus. Once we finally got some service, our main guy was a bit sassy. Not sure if that's just how his personality was or if he was irritated with us. I feel like our requests were pretty reasonable and not demanding: we asked to move because of my sensitivity to smoke, menus so we could decide what to order, and water because that's pretty standard practice? Idk. It also seemed predominantly white, so.... I did feel a little weird and this isn't something that I regularly experience. It seemed like everyone else was getting serviced and one of the staff members was too busy chatting away at the table immediately next to us (seemed like they were friends with the patrons). Food was whatever. We got a couple orders of chowder ($8), some beers ($9), and split some curried potato wedges ($13). We asked to get them spicy because of the yelp reviews I read, but their version of staff spicy is not spicy at all. It's more like mild at best. The batter was light and airy, the sauce complimented it well. The drinks are strong! Very reasonably priced in this day and age ($14) I couldn't leave without having the plymouths platter because I am definitely all about the fried foods and seafood! Best combo to satisfy all my cravings. Our server was extremely nice and knowledgeable about the drinks and daily specials. My friend, Andree, took me here and I LOVED the experience! We got there around 5pm and there were a lot of seats but it started to fill up pretty fast.
