We love Sly McFly's. It's our go to spot. Love the Music and the vibe. But tonight it was an epic fail. I am a systems thinker. So I am not going to slam the server. I am confident she was working her tail off. But the system that allows her to be awesome did not exist. We had no menus, absolutely no attention, one beer and a shot for an entire hour. Went here for a quick lunch and had a good experience overall. The atmosphere was great, the service was friendly and the food was good. The only item I wasn't a fan of was the nachos, it tasted sour. The server said it's the beer cheese, wasn't for me. If you've never had their beer cheese before, I'd suggest trying a sample first before ordering the full plate. Other than that, everything else was delicious. Hmm we had high hopes for lunch! Celebrating my sister's birthday! Well, for starters we got sat down and one of the chairs at the high top was broken. I ordered an appetizer, so told our waitress we weren't in a hurry I wanted to enjoy appetizers and then food along with drinks. Well we ordered drinks and everyone got theirs and then the appetizer came and I was still waiting for my FLAT Coors light ‍. The calamari wasn't crispy it was soggy and not cooked all the way. Then she took our order and I asked for another beer and so did my sister. She got her beer first before mine. ( my sister made a comment can I ge my beer before my meal so they rushed hers) As we were waiting finally out food came and unfortunately the fish was cold and soggy for both plates. We had no silverware or extra plates so I tried several times to flag down service and ask. I finally went up to the bar and asked to speak with a manager after waiting a while. He said sorry and he's take care of it. He did say they were short on staff, however our waitress maybe was distracted by her own kids sitting for her. I felt bad for her but it wasn't appropriate to have them sitting so close to the bar and having her attend them. He did give a discount. The waitress came by asking me if I wanted my free beer. Stopped in for a quick snack and drink after our visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was a good choice. We were afraid it may be too touristy, but it had a nice neighborhood pub vibe. Our waitress was great, and the food.... We just got apps and drinks. My girls got raspberry lemon drops, which they really enjoyed. I just got a well scotch on the rocks. It hit the spot. Back to the food. We just ordered apps, and they were all delicious. The garlic parm fries were extremely good. I got a photo of those, but the rest was gone too fast. The fries were crunchy with soft centers. They were perfectly seasoned and the garlic aioli dipping sauce was a great compliment. We also ordered fried calamari and pretzel bites. The calamari was crisp, tender and nicely seasoned. It had a nice lemon back flavor since they were fried with lemon slices. Great Service, But the Flavor Has Faded We've been to this spot several times in the past, but unfortunately, our most recent visit left us pretty disappointed. It felt like the high standards we were used to have slipped, with both the food and drinks feeling like they were lacking that usual spark. The Food We both went for seafood options this time around, and the consensus was the same: The Fish Sandwich: While the portion size was fine, it tasted like it had no seasoning whatsoever. It was surprisingly bland for a place we usually enjoy. The Fish Tacos: My wife felt exactly the same way about her tacos. The freshness seemed okay, but the flavor profile was just non-existent. The Service The one saving grace of the experience was the team working the floor. The staff was very attentive throughout our meal--making sure our water was filled and checking in on us regularly. I definitely don't blame them for the experience; they did their jobs perfectly. The Verdict It's tough when a reliable go-to spot misses the mark. Between the unseasoned main courses and the lackluster drinks, I'm not sure I would be back anytime soon. Sly Mcflys is a fun restaurant and bar! The bartenders are so personable and accommodating, shout out Martin, Nick & Anthony! During my time here, I was welcomed by a gorgeous and sweet host- Jennifer! I enjoyed a lovely drink called the white linen which was well balanced, not too sweet and very refreshing. My server McKayla was very attentive and helpful when informing me of the different entrees available such as the fresh caught halibut n chips. Food came out timely and hot. Staff was attentive and provided sufficient service this past Wednesday when we came by for lunch. Got the raspberry lemon drop, salty crew blonde ale, mac'n cheese bites, buffalo chicken wings with ranch, and cannery row fish sandwich. The lemon drop was yummy, a nice tangy flavor and the perfect sweetness. The fish sandwich and fries were decent too. The mac'n cheese bites were okay, a light batter but a sort of cheap taste to it. The wings were terrible, overcooked and dry with just a tiny bit of buffalo sauce glazed on top. Luckily, I was too hungry to not eat them, but wow they were the worst chicken wings I've ever had anywhere. I'd return for the drinks and the spacious environment with ample seating and live entertainment (they even had live music scheduled on New Year's Eve). We had this meal around 3 years ago and I still check yelp these days to make sure that others are having a consistently terrible experience. I seriously thought about going to therapy after this restaurant. From now on my family and I are scared and now check yelp reviews every single time we go to dinner. Solid spot but my one complaint is transparency on the menu pricing lol. My husband and I both got the lobster roll, which obviously lobster is not cheap by any means. On the menu pictured, it says typical market price is $27-$36 per roll, which is totally valid and matches what we've paid for in Boston and other places in CA for lobster rolls. When the bill comes, imagine our surprise when it's $96 lol. Subtracting the sales tax, that's about $44 per lobster roll, which is $8 more than the maximum price listed on the menu. If they had listed an updated pricing range instead of just leaving it as a "surprise" for the end of the meal, it would have been fine. But this is a popular restaurant in a busy part of Cannery Row, update the menus with a more accurate range maybe? The lobster roll was great, my husband and I both enjoyed them, but it would be nice to know what to expect price wise. read more

It was mid day so it was pretty quiet, but the food was good and the service quick and helpful. The only negative I would give this one is that one the fish n chips there was a bit too much cumin seasoning used. As a party of four we were looking for lunch on a busy Sunday afternoon. This place had lots of people inside and the menu appeared to have many good options so we thought we would give it a shot. We were all quite hungry at the time so we ordered our food right away. We put in an order for an appetizer to share hoping it would come out quickly but it came out around 30 minutes late with the rest of our food. Our first frustration was my wife ordered her burger without cheese as she has a dairy allergy, the waiter confirmed her request and the burger arrived with cheese. A different staff member was happy to remake it but we had to wait another 15 minutes for the new burger to come out. Next, they didn't ever come by to fill our waters even though they came by and we requested it. We asked for napkins which also never came. All of our food when we got to eating was a typical touristy American food. The fish and chips were oily and heavily breaded but the fish was fresh and tasty. The 2 ladies who ordered burgers said they were average and the bacon barely cooked so they did not eat it. Overall I can't recommend this place as there are many other options around. read more

Came here for dinner on a Saturday evening around 6:30pm, after the aquarium since it's a really close walk. We got the lobster roll (the brown butter one) ($46 market price) and the clam chowder cup in a bread bowl ($17). Pros: - really convenient great location in the heart of Monterey near cannery row, super convenient if you're going to the aquarium or other attractions in the area. - has a solid seafood menu with lots of options, like fish tacos, fish and chips, etc - decent amount of lobster on the lobster roll, which I was initially impressed at until I got the bill - has live music - good people watching spot if you sit near a door - not crowded on a Saturday evening, which I now realize there may be reasons for. Cons: - ugh, so many. - lobster roll price was market price, but I did not actually think it could be $46, that's when I felt like it was actually way too pricey. Would not order this again even though the food itself was a 4/5 if I didn't consider the price. The other prices seem reasonable so would do that if I came again. - really bad service but not the fault of the actual staff - seems to be the system in place of the restaurant itself. The waitress also was super apologetic and said they were very understaffed. We walked in without anyone greeting/hosting, we ended up asking a staff and they said we could sit anywhere. The only table for 2 available was still a little dirty so we sat down. Everything took really long - from getting our table cleaned, to getting menus, to getting the check. Felt bad for the workers to be honest. - really smelly bathroom, that ran out of toilet paper so it was a struggle - while the amount of lobster on the roll was decent - the rest of the roll was so mid. Bread was huge and bland, veggies on the roll were also bland (but hot sauce was so helpful) - due to how busy the limited staff were, guests had to go grab their own hot sauce and ketchup from other tables (even though it wasn't even that full) Overall, pretty disappointing but I feel like it's my fault for not clarifying the market price of the lobster roll. For the price I expected it to be delicious, and it was quite mediocre. But the thing that bumped it down to a 2 was really the staffing level and service of the whole place. I want to emphasize I would not blame the workers, but the bad systems in place (not enough staff, nothing to indicate on tables when people are newly seated to be helped in a timely manner). Nice atmosphere. I had the fish tacos. As good as any I've ever had. The batter the cod was fried in was light and crispy. My wife had the burger which was good even if it was just a tad underdone. I came with my parents they were really excited to try and we were met with our server Cielo or Ceelo is his name I believe. He kept rushing us to order which was odd because we came in around 7pm. My husband and I went to Monterey for my birthday weekend and we love hanging out way after hrs. We went into Sly's for a few drinks on Sat night and there was a band and dancing. The drinks were strong, and staff was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and we stayed almost until close. We decided to give Sly McFly a try after many visits to the area, even though the reviews (and our lyft driver) warned us not to. We arrived right before the late dinner crowd rush so the service was very prompt and attentive. We ordered drinks and a fried calamari appetizer, garlic fries and a lobster roll. The calamari lacked seasoning, I liked how they used some fried lemons and green beans as garnish. The lobster roll at $41 (market price) was OVER seasoned and over dressed with sauce and the lobster meat was over cooked. I was disappointed that my garlic fries only had a hint of garlic flavor; they were not hot and tasted old. At around 830, things started to go downhill The servers were no where to be found. I had to flag down the staff to close out my tab three times. I literally could have walked out and not have been noticed. The band started performing at around 925pm They drew a very diverse crowd of people out to the dance floor. Stopped in here for a little drink on our anniversary weekend. The bartender was extremely nice. The drinks were good highly recommend great vibe and atmosphere. Came back later that night, and they had an AMAZING band. They played 80s rock which was so fun and it was cool seeing younger generations in the Bar also singing and dancing to the 80s music which we were pleasantly surprised the drinks are great. Then we came back on our way out of town to have a bloody Mary, which was delicious And the food here is super great highly highly highly recommend this place so all the staff is nice.
