Not to much good to say here. Rockfish grill is located on fisherman's wharf in Monterey. We originally chose this place because it was the only place on fisherman's wharf that didn't have a host of someone yelling outside abt how great they were trying to get people to come in. Well maybe we would have been better off at one of those other places. We started with drinks my Sauvignon Blanc was good nothing exceptional, it was a very classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. My partners drink on the other hand was their house old-fashioned which was way overly sweet. Next onto to food I got the steamed garlic clams, which was basically just steamed clams in a water, tomato broth. Not good I couldn't even eat more than two just very bland. my partner got the Caesar salad the clam chowder and fries. Caesar salad, he said was was average starring at a five out of 10 the clam chowder he starred at a 6.5 saying that it did feel very fresh but was nothing special. He rushed us, and I witnessed him at the tables around us and he was pleasant and not rushing them. He rushed us tried taking plate I was still eating from. Before I write this review, just know, I NEVER use Yelp to write reviews. I only use Yelp to see how favorable restaurants are when I want to try a new place. With that being said, the food was average. Nothing over the top. I ordered the Fisherman's Platter, a Bowl of Clam Chowder, and a cherry Pepsi. My fries for the platter were cold/luke warm at best, despite waiting 25 minutes for my food, I never got a refill until o asked a separate waiter who was walking by, nor did anyone from my party. Last, our server, CRISPIN, was absolutely horrible with his customer service. He gave my fiance attitude when we asked to split the checks amongst our group of 8, then proceeded to tell her in a patronizing way, "You should have told me this before I ever took your order, just give me some credit cards and I'll charge them evenly." (I was upset he said credit cards because I was paying cash, and his tones insinuated that I couldn't afford my meals). Then they added 20% gratuity, (I'm assuming because we were a party of 8), which I don't mind at all, EXCEPT THE SERVICE WAS TRASH. No refills, no check ups, and then attitude / rudeness with my fiancé when she made a simple request. We were all polite (we all worked customer service before so we ensure we are polite and empathetic to our servers), and there was absolutely no need for any of his tones, comments, or lack of follow ups. To conclude, after everything was paid, not even a thank you, or anything. Simply picked up our checks and walked away without anything else. DO NOT COME HERE. Haven't been to the wharf in a few years and when we did we always had a good dining experience, albeit a bit pricey. On this trip we decided to try Rockfish. This was our first time. It was just about noon but the the restaurant was nearly empty, except for one table of four. We seated at a nice table with a view of the bay and harbor. Lots of boats and seals to watch. The waiter came by in short order and took our drink and food order. I ordered the sourdough crab sandwich and my wife had the fish tacos. Two things. One, the entire restaurant empty they chose to seat a large noisy party right next to us. Two, they chose to clean the windows during service? I actually had to move out of the way while eating while the guy wiped the windows during service next to me. Now the food. We both started with the clam chowder which was very good but they don't give any sourdough, you have pay for it? We opted for crackers instead. My sandwich was grilled nicely but the crab did not taste fresh to my mind. It tasted more like canned crab. I love Dungeness crab and grew up in the Bay Area where it was readily available. I asked the waiter and he assured me it was made fresh daily from fresh crab. My wife's tacos were portioned generously and she said the fish tasted good but they over did the aioli sauce. A very quiet February night on the old pier in Monterey, we took an Uber over from the Seven Gables, about $20. The pier was empty, a couple here and there certainly not like the day in mid summer. Weather was and has been spectacular and the stars were showing off tonight! We walked to the end of the pier, I've been here several times over the years. As we were seated there were only four tables with dinner guests, that's how slow it was. We knew M was going to "sample" the chowder and she did. A new rule was instated a while back...no fish n' chips unless there are fried shrimp too. wouldn't you know the Fisherman's Platter had it all, calamari too. So we got our cup of chowder and we shared the platter. The chowder was too perfect and I'd question whether this was made on the premises or just stirred up in the back. The Platter well...Let's say it was a decent meal for one but we made it work for us. Slightly over cooked didn't help justify the price they were charging. From the iced tea not being refilled to reminding the server with "some ranch dressing please", I got the feeling that the chef and manager overseeing the operation tonight wasn't happening. Pretty good! It's hard to know where to go on the boardwalk because there are so many restaurants that seemingly look the same and feature similar menus. I had the rockfish tacos that were really good. Firecracker shrimp was also delicious and side of fries was very hardy and could feed the table. Views were great! My meal was delicious. I ordered the stuffed salmon with crab meat, mozzarella, spinach and mashed potatoes and veggies. Had bread pudding for dessert (yummy). My husband had the spicy fried chicken sandwich that was cooked to perfection. Everything was so good. The service was constant. Meaning it was good to have someone checking on you but like 2-3 people almost every 5 minutes like they were rushing you became a little irritating but after you let them know I'm good, just give me a few minutes then they leave you alone for awhile. That way you can have a full conversation without being interrupted. Ambiance was nice. We had a few sea lions swimming near us. However, the dish was heavily topped with an excessive amount of grated Parmesan cheese, which significantly altered the flavor and detracted from the overall taste. Given the $40 price point, the dish fell short of expectations and did not meet the standard I would reasonably serve to my own pet. Upon bringing this issue to the waiter's attention, he acknowledged the concern and agreed to inform the manager. While I understand that cheese is commonly used in Italian cuisine, its application on a seafood dish felt particularly out of place. Despite the three dollar signs denoting price range, it really wasn't that expensive, especially for the area. Now, the tree dollar sign rating for The Sardine Factory is characteristic of a pricey menu. I would give this place two dollar signs, and my husband and I are quite frugal. The food was really good. The food was good for the most part, we just ordered shared plates... Artichoke was good but had a thorn on one of the leaves and i got stung. The food was EXCELLENT and reasonably priced. I was most excited to try the crab and artichoke gratin, and I was delighted with it. It was a decently-sized portion and delicious. We decided to go with lighter entrees - my partner ordered the grilled crab sourdough sandwich and I had the blackened rockfish sandwich. Both were flavorful, perfectly cooked, and just wonderful. This was my first time visiting. I enjoyed my dinner here during the week with my wife and son. Upon entering we had to leave our stroller at the door, which was fine, they offered us a high chair. We got to enjoy our dinner with a table on the window over looking the water. We started with the basket of garlic cheese bread. It was good, but honestly nothing special. I did have parts of bread where my cheese wasn't even melted, but not a deal breaker. I enjoyed the fisherman platter, everything was cooked perfectly. My wife enjoyed her pasta. We both ordered strawberry lemonades, which were just pink lemonade with strawberries in syrup added. We were asked if we would like them refilled, which we agreed. It wasn't until the bill came that I realized that they charged us for refills. Most restaurants have free refills, especially when the bill was over 100 dollars. Bummer. Did they taste great? Yes but so small. The calamari was good - I appreciated the lack of rings. Clam chowder was the worst one on the Wharf, according to my boyfriend. I didn't really care for the drinks (pricey for a lot of ice though it's perhaps typical for cocktails) - I did love the sand dabs dish though, fish was fresh, good amount, vegetables were tender, rice was great. Rockfish Harbor Grill is a restaurant located at the end of fisherman's wharf in Monterey. The view overlooks the harbor. The service was fast and my server was friendly. I wanted a salad for lunch, so I ordered the Shrimp Louie Salad. The price was steep ($29.95), but I was in the mood for a seafood salad since I was in Monterey. The overall quality of the salad was good. The amount of bay shrimp you get was not worth the $37.72 (including tax & tip). As you can see from my pic of the salad, it's not a huge salad. The bay shrimp is definitely frozen. I've had frozen bay shrimp that wasn't as soft as the bay shrimp in this salad. The amount of 1000 island dressing was small too. The iceberg lettuce wash fresh and crisp. I loved the candied bacon! Overall, the view was nice, and the shrimp louie salad was good. I didn't order anything else, so I can't say if the portions and quality of other food selections are good or bad. In my opinion, this shrimp louie salad is not worth the price listed. Note: the price of Shrimp Louie Salad is probably reflected by the location of restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf. It appears that when observing prices at other restaurants on the wharf, the prices are in the $30 range for shrimp louie salad. I would recommend ordering something else that is reflective of that price range. (ie: rockcod and chips for under $30). read more
