This restaurant is a must-visit every time I'm in the Carmel-by-the-Sea area. It's just a few minutes away from the crowded area, which makes it a perfect spot if you're looking for a more relaxed and peaceful dining experience. I've brought both friends and family here, and everyone has loved it. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and you can also choose to sit in a beautiful glass-enclosed sunroom, which is especially nice during brunch and dinner. The food is consistently good, and they have great cocktails along with a well-selected list of local draft beers. The service is excellent as well. Austin always gives thoughtful recommendations. After seeing the reviews and being told about this restaurant while checking into our Carmel hotel, I was super excited to try it. Unfortunately the appetite I built from Los Angeles all the way here was ruined when I was served a very obviously rancid filet mignon. I tried so many times to reason in my head why my steak smelled the way it did "maybe it smells strong because it's cooked a little under" "maybe I'm overthinking it" but the smell the meat left on our finger tips when touching it was like old fish that lingered so badly my husband had to immediately get up and was his hands ... I can't even explain it. I embarrassingly had to send back the most expensive item on the menu and couldn't even stomach ordering something else after the few bites I took so I just drank my coke. With all that being said, my family and I enjoyed the sautéed garlic butter shrimp appetizer. My daughter enjoyed her kids cheese burger. My husband enjoyed his French dip sandwich (until I gave him a piece of my steak to smell then he lost his appetite as well). There was no wait to be seated when we walked in on a Monday evening. Waiter was good, not as attentive as we liked. I hope this doesn't seem too harsh, I really looked forward to dining here, the menu was intriguing and the location is stunning. 10 stars if I could honestly! This place is not only so good, but all the staff are extremely friendly. We found ourselves here on the way home from a 12 hour drive from Santa Barbra with our doggies in the pouring rain. I had called ahead of time to confirm they are a dog friendly restaurant and although the rain was coming down so hard and they closed the outside patio, they let our 2 furry friends in with no problem! I let them know they were on trazodone so would not be a problem at all and they behaved very well, but this is the first time I have ever had a restaurant allow the doggos inside the establishment! We ordered a couple things, their corn/bacon bread as an appetizer, the appetizer shrimp and we opted for the cajun flavor, my fiancé got the scallop risotto, and I ordered the seafood linguine pesto pasta. After having everything, we felt the cajun shrimp would not be something we would order again. However, everything else?! Amazing! Worth every penny. It was so funny, my fiancé liked my pesto dish more and I liked his scallop dish more, we should have switched honestly. The scallop dish came with lobster sauce and it was just so worth it! Highly recommend coming here, it was very enjoyable and we absolutely see us coming back. I also ordered their Guavamelon cocktail and it was to die for! I'm a little behind on my review, but check this place out! We had dinner our first night here when we visited Carmel a few months ago. I really enjoyed a lot of the unique options they had here. We started out with delicious cocktails as well as some cheese bread. The cheese bread had corn on top which was a unique touch but it was all delicious. For my entree I had the Sur Tikka Masala which was a very unique take by using sea bass instead of chicken. I had to try that since it was a specialty item and since when do you see sea bass and tikka? I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it was still good. I added on the jumbo shrimp which was really good. For dessert, although Steven preferred another option, he allowed me to go with the bon bons. I was like a little kid and had to get them due to the show that comes with it and the uniqueness, again, with the item. Little did I expect these bon bons to be SO massive as well as a complete show by our server Austin! Austin was the star of the night. He was truly amazing. He checked on us frequently, everything went smooth and he had me laughing. Once he performed the bon bon horror show, I knew it was a visit that I would never forget. Request him if you are able to. Visited Sur during car week. Glad I made a reservation in advance as this is a very popular restaurant. We had a delicious salad with poached pears, candied pecans, orange slices and shredded carrots with arugula. Our main course was Sand dabs with Brussels Sprouts, sliced carrots and cauliflower florets, ( no Bok Choy this time). Both very tasty. We were dining with friends celebrating an anniversary, so we celebrated with champagne. Too full for dessert. Service was great during this busy night. They didn't have tables immediately available, but offered a seat at the bar and can move us to a table when one opens up. Host was really nice! We ended up choosing to stay in our own little corner of the bar even when a table became available on the patio within ~15mins. Ambience was a little dim and moody. What we ordered: - Passionfruit lemonade: didn't quite taste like passionfruit, but it was still good! Everything we tried was good. I had a Peachy Keen to sip on and the hubby had a beer. The Peachy keen was just that, wonderful. The bacon cheese bread is a must. Crab cakes are better with other the caramelized onion and I love onion so.... Hubby had the dish and chips, he said they are different since it's chilean Seabass but it's good. My friends and I ordered the seafood linguini, scallop risotto, chicken masala, and a steak -- everything came out perfectly cooked and full of flavor. One of our favorite dishes was actually the appetizer: the wonton chips with poke -- super fresh and delicious. Our server, Grant, was amazing. He gave great drink recommendations that paired really well with our food, and even surprised me with a complimentary ice cream dessert for my birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch. But unfortunately I either ordered the wrong things or came on an off night, because I didn't enjoy the food and drink I ordered. Service was good, and we had our choice of seating when we arrived for our dinner reservation. I ordered the Seared Scallop Risotto. I usually love scallops, but these tasted off somehow in terms of texture and flavor and I struggled to finish them. The risotto also wasn't cooked well, and the sauce was bland. My partner got the lobster ravioli, which turned out to be a very heavy meal but was fine. Our dog absolutely loved the chicken breast & shredded carrots from the dog menu, which was a very generous portion for our little guy! My 95-year-old father, two sisters and I went to dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was quiet. There were probably only three or four other tables with customers. The restaurant space is clean and very inviting. They have outdoor tables as well, which have heat lamps. We sat indoors in a corner table and could look out at all the lights. Our server was Alpha. He was very friendly and helpful. He schmoozed our father which made the process more enjoyable for him. He seemed honest and answering our Food questions, not like he was trying to push one thing over another. We started with the Panko artichoke hearts, and a wedge salad. The salad was great. The spicy Panko seem to mask the taste of the artichokes. Except for a few of the larger pieces, the sauces were the primary flavor. I had the scallop risotto in a tomato lobster sauce. Sadly, there were only 4 quarter sized scallops in the whole dish. There was risotto was nice and cheesy and the lobster sauce was the best I've ever had. My sister and father had the fried chicken. They both enjoyed the chicken and ate about half of the serving. My other sister had the miso salmon. She really enjoyed it. We tried to order dessert, but it was so slow coming out we canceled. My experience took place last month and maybe my expectations were a little too high. Our group of 6 made reservations a few hours before arrival. We were quickly seated. However, it took a few moments before our waiter took our order. Totally understand that it's a Saturday night, and possibly short staffed. We ordered lots of dishes and everything tasted mediocre at best. For example, the Beets Salad had few beets and the risotto was undercooked. Luckily, our group was good at self entertaining and didn't mind too much about delays in the food. Later on, we surprised a couple of our friends by ordering a dessert with smoke and sizzle, that request took quite some time. Lastly, we couldn't find our waiter to pay so we flagged someone else. After everything was said and done, this dinner took almost 3 hours. Our waiter was super nice and friendly (think his name is Alex), thanks for trying your best. Everything from the food to the excellent service was beyond our expectations! Everything we ordered, from the appetizers, the pasta, to the multiple desserts, was excellent. The fun way they served the dessert was such a surprise, that i don't want to spoil it for anyone, but if you're celebrating a special occasion, it's such a nice touch! Loved the open air style restaurant in this quaint shopping area. We had the oriental chicken salad was awesome and came had a tender grilled chicken breast with romaine, cabbage, red bell pepper, tomato, orange slices, crispy wontons and almonds with sesame ginger dressing. The filet mignon sliders were cooked to perfection. We also had the Sur House Salad with mixed greens, oranges chunks, candied pecans, cherry tomatoes, manchego cheese, parmesan croutons and a honey mustard vinaigrette. The last 2 times my husband and I have eaten here, the food has been mediocre. My husband's steak tough and my rice bowl was ok but the orange chicken wasn't the best. The bathrooms were dirty and it was a slow time in the restaurant, so someone should have been attending to it more. Just a bit disappointing because we love the place. We got seated quickly and our server was nice but it was a bit of over promising and under delivering. Don't talk about "anything you need Im here just let me know!" but you can't refill our water or get us salt and pepper when its empty in the restaurant. For the food, bland. We got the French dip, fish & chips, and calamari. The calamari was good which is why this place got a second star from me. The French dip however was soo bland, hardly any meat. The best thing on that plate was probably the french fries. The fish & chips was decent but soggy in the middle as if it was sitting. Terrible value given the French dip was $30. Super overpriced establishment. If you're curious how this place has such great reviews, notice how many accounts on here give this 5 stars yet this is their only review. We had lunch today at Sur. This was a quaint, quiet place at the late lunch hour during the time that we were there. Alpha was our server. He was fun and engaging. We ordered sparkling wine to drink, Chandon Brut (5/5), a Thursday at 1:30? Why not! Alpha brought us a couple of splits and we were off... Food: We started with the calamari strips(5/5) appetizer. The strips were crispy, tendered, and fresh. A perfect start to lunch. My wife and I split two entrees: the Sur Burger (4/5) and Fish & Chips (5/5). The burger was good, but needed a fresh and texture component like iceberg lettuce. It was cooked to the proper temperature and had a nice chargrilled flavor. We added some grilled jalapeños to spice it up a little. The fish and chips were outstanding. Light and crispy fresh fish, it was right up there in my top fish and chips of all times. I haven't mentioned the seasoned fries that came with both lunch entrees. These fries were super crispy, seasoned well, and filled the plate with an ample serving. No stinginess here at Sur with those tasty fries! So why not 5 stars??? This is super solid restaurant. I would come back in a heartbeat. Our reservation of 16 got unfortunately cancelled at ANOTHER restaurant due to a power outage shutting down the WHOLE block. If you really wanted to know it was Esteban restaurant, they got live music and tapas. Anyways - we hit up this restaurant on a Xmas weekend and they were able to take us upon call that same day! So super kudos to their team to take us super last minute! Walking into this place was a very Xmas vibe as well. Everything is all lit up and festive. The brick all over the place along with the wooden board frames throughout the architecture provide that beachside civilized vibe. I ordered the Kona steak and oh my lanta was it awesome opossum. It had everything island vibe I was looking for in the dead of winter in Monterey. The meat was juicy and seared in Kona coffee served with elote, rice, and pineapple. Just an explosion of flavors to dance with, and then to cleanse it down with some ginger on the side or wash it down with a Mai Tai IPA was fantastic. For dessert, the group ordered the bonbons. Its like this giant ice cream cone that is like a Haagen Daas, and it comes with a "show". It comes in a 2-tier chalice looking thing where there is a lower level that has the dry ice to have an ongoing foggy show to it. Its a nice thing to do if you're out celebrating or got kids. Once the dry ice was done, we were pretending its like the Holy Water stoup and we were blessing ourselves like how you would do when you walk into a church hahaha. The peppermint martini is also A MUST if you are a drinker. You don't even taste the alcohol because the peppermint does a great job at masking it because it overall just tastes like peppermint sugary joy. I was going to give it 4-stars but the fact that they took 16 of us in, accommodated a table of that nature, along with providing that level of quality and care, I had to give it another bump. The price is also fairly reasonable with what you get as well. Because it is a nice restaurant to go to and the quality within the food is there, I would consider this on the "cheaper" side if that makes sense? But its not cheap... its reasonable. A lot of other options too! And we didn't realize this was a dog friendly spot too! I would go here again if and when we vacation down here again! Makes for easy access with ample parking located in Carmel by US1 and Carmel Valley Road. Just head towards the back in the plaza up the steps for a cozy spot on the 2nd floor. I sat outside to enjoy the weather for a relaxing al fresco late lunch. The patio was quiet for a Sunday but picked up with a few more diners arriving. The menu is good without too much fuss. I started with a nice Mai Tai IPA and the highlight of the meal, Tuna Sashimi Wontons. The fresh tuna over fried wonton skins with a drizzle of teriyaki Dijon wasabi, poke sauce was the star. Yum! I should have stopped there since the Sun Dab fish plate was just okay. The fish came with beurre blanc. Overall the fish missed some flavor and rice was missing somewhat. Service was good to start but the bartender forgot about me when it got busier inside. It's good but not great. But easy to try. YMMV. Enjoy. read more

Everything about this place was amazing! We had reservations and were seated immediately. They accommodated our pup and placed us outside with heat lamps for a nice evening :) Our server was Mark! He was absolutely wonderful. He checked in often to make sure we were all good and was very kind throughout our meal. Even his neighbor server, Alpha, was awesome too! He periodically checked in and even said congrats to being newlyweds. I've been in the service industry for 10+ years, so it was great to see smooth teamwork amongst the servers. We ended up closing the house down and even then, Mark never made us feel rushed. We'd told him we just got married and he took care of our B&B for us! Super sweet. Food was delicious. It's so nice to have chefs cook the meat just right. Usually when I order a rare steak, it comes out cooked to medium, but this was perfect! We loved everything and we were very happy to have our special minimoon dinner over there :) we'd been researching where to go for weeks, so we're glad we made the right choice to dine here.
