No frills bar with great servers. It can become a bit loud since it's a small place, but if you can live with that it's not bad. The food options are pretty good, but I did not like their "special" prime rib (I know, trying that in a bar was on me). This place is located on the bottom floor of the Hotel Del Monte (aboard NSA Monterey!). I arrived at night, and the hotel wasn't clearly marked. Once I found the lobby, the Trident Room also wasn't clearly marked. Maybe they want that speakeasy vibe? Once we got to the bar, all of the staff were friendly. They have about ten beers on tap, and a full cocktail list. The food was above average, though the menu was a little limited. I assumed they'd have a ton of Navy memorabilia on the walls, but they didn't. They did have free popcorn though. :) read more

Very BASIC bar food in a historical location. Service was decent, you could tell they were understaffed. Table was sticky, tap water tasted horrible, food was subpar, music was too loud. If this is your only food option it won't be your worst meal you've eaten. I'd still recommend stopping in, if you have military base access. read more

My first trip to this phenomenal bar was back in 1991 after returning home from the first Gulf War. I had TAD orders to NPS back then as I bestowed my real-life war experiences with the NPS students at the time. Many times over the years, I have made it a point to come back to appreciate all the enchanted memories I have of all the incredible military brethern I have hoisted a beer with inside this very space. While on campus for my program, my group decided to give the trident room a try. $25 prime rib on Tuesday night who could give that up. The service was decent due to the simple fact that the trident room was too capacity however the service was quick. I ordered some wings and within 15 minutes they were out. Within my group, they ordered a variety of items and everyone's food came out within a reasonable time and not one complaint of what was ordered. They were out of the mugs placed on the ceiling, so we were a little sad about that, but learned that later in the week a shipment would come in. Attended a function last night here at the Trident Room with a great group of 35 highly motivated, thirsty and hungry fellow classmates! Trident Room did not disappoint with a nice selection of local draft beers, a decent menu of bar eats ranging from burgers to specials like last night's prime rib, and most importantly, a phenomenal atmosphere for casual conversations and networking! This is the go to bar in the Naval Post Graduate School (NPS) located in the basement of the Navy Gateway Inn- walking these historical spaces which were formerly the halls of the Del Monte Hotel transport you back in time to those days when railroads were king and Monterey was the place to be for high society! I highly recommend that you make the Trident Bar one of your must see stops when you find yourself in Monterey! Check out the photos and you'll see that this place is ultra-cool with NPS Beer Steins hanging above you on the ceiling! I was in Monterey with my family for a few days and went to the Trident Room twice for dinner. For the price the food was good. I would say it was a better than average burger. Salmon was good. This is a bar, not a restaurant, so if you want a $60 salmon dinner you should probably go to cannery row or fisherman's wharf. I love the atmosphere, and the hotel itself is amazing. This is a bar in the bottom of Hotel Del Monte locates on Naval Postgraduate School. To have entry to this bar, you have to have base privileges (like active duty or a mil retiree) or be able to convince your military neighbor to take you! The setting is beautiful, tons of dark wood and the original stain glass windows. There is a plaque outside the bar that explains the history (during prohibition it was labeled "child's playroom'!!). Out the back doors is an elegant rose garden where you can smoke (rumor is there is an unofficial cigar club that meets on Thursday afternoons). From the ceilings hang mugs available for purchase at the bar. Military memorable line the walls. The bar is fully stocked and carries 10 local beers on tap. They also carry a selection of local wines from the Carmel valley. The food is typical bar-fare. They do have vegan and gluten-free options. Tonight I order a burger and fries. Amazingggggggg!!!!!! $10 for burger and fries. The bun was soft and seemed like it was baked in-house!! And come on, cheapest burger in Montery Peninsula. Holy crap that was good! read more

The trident room is an awesome bar! I've had several trips to the Naval Postgraduate school over the last 10 years and I still remember the first time I laid eyes on this place! I was amazed that such an awesome little bar was accessible from my "hotel" room without even having to walk outside! The bar has a great atmosphere and is anything but "divey" despite its classification. I purchased a mug on my first visit that entitles me to refills at a lower cost compared to buying pints. I just pack the mug with me whenever I fly out to Monterrey. The staff has always been attentive and friendly through the years. This bar is usually my very first stop after I drop my bags off in my room (unless I get in at 10am of course :). If you have the opportunity to visit don't miss the chance! read more

Dan is a solid bartender with a world of knowledge and experience and Raul is an undercover cocktail master, his old fashioneds are as good as I get back home (for a much lighter price). $6 dollar drafts, a few bottles, and solid pub fare. I was also able to buy a mug and get a spot on the ceiling, so my mug is safe for the 18 months I'll be in session. read more

This place is great for a drink and to just enjoy a good conversation. This is one of those places that you go to for the history. Imagine all the people and stories that have been through these doors! On Fridays, they serve free appies and the beer is cheap. If you plan to go to the Trident room more than once, you have to get a mug that you can store on the ceiling and then drink from your own private mug each time you go back. I love the history of the place and I think about all the people that started as ensigns and ended up as admirals, that have passed through these doors. Plus, where else can you see Crazy George from the Farmer's Market on a Friday night!?! If you are able to get on base, you have to check out this old school Sailor bar. The old-school charm is enough to check out and pass through the amazing ball room upstairs, before you leave. Not to mention the lovely garden outside of the bar. It is all beautiful! read more

This place is full of old-school awesomeness. My husband's a civilian staff member at NPS so I get to reap the benefits of gaining entrance on campus and into this gem of a bar. Appropriately, the decor is a dark wooden nautical theme with pictures of old Navy ships and captains on the walls above the booths. But the most impressive decor/functional storage method is the dozens of official NPS beer mugs that hang from the ceiling, each in their own spot with the owner's nickname and number underneath indicating their place. They are available for $20 and then every time you fill up the well-over 16 ounces it's $4. Good deal if you're a regular, and almost everyone there is. I prefer a dirty martini 'cause it just seems like the most appropriate drink to order...the bartender even came over to the table to shake and pour it for me on the spot. Classy! The food here is decent but the outstanding value makes up for any lack of flavor, since you can use that extra savings for another beer or two. Last time I came I ordered the seafood linguine special which was surprisingly good with fresh mussels, clams and shrimp, came with an intensely anchovy-flavored Caesar salad with store-bought croutons and a glass of Chardonnay for around $16. Huge portions too. Also, for happy hour they sometimes have free snacks (veggies, meatballs, etc.) and ALWAYS served fresh popped popcorn from a old-school machine with giant bowls. The only thing they need to do now is show old war movies and have movie and drinks night on Saturdays. PS - dinner only here, if you want lunch you have to order in the cafeteria but you can eat in the space. read more

Trident Room feels like home, particularly when i'm shacked up at NPS. Obviously you need to be militarily affiliated to get on post/here, but barring that, you're good. I remember them doing a Friday spread (not sure if that's still a thing), but aside from that...you'll get good beers, a pool table, and popcorn- all at decent prices (thank you, Uncle Sam). If you are able to come here and want to kill some time, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better spot in which to do so. read more

I really don't understand how the Trident Room can be labeled less than four stars and classified as a dive bar. It is absolutely insane what people seem to expect from an on base bar/restaurant. All you need to know is that this is probably one of the best on base clubs/lounges/wardrooms I've ever been a part of period (.) Now quit being upset that you aren't a naval aviator. Loved this place, but in order to get 5 stars from me they need to ban children. We had 4 kids running past our table constantly going outside and back inside screaming. When they were inside they were running around with pool sticks. The kids parents just sitting there drinking and saying nothing.
