Happy birthday to meeee!!! Came to Tanner Smiths on a whim looking for a great bottomless brunch for my birthday and I am so happy we stumbled on this spot it will now be on rotation!! Brona was an amazing attentive server who kept the drinks flowing to keep my buzz and belly happy! I was a little skeptical about trying the Reali-tea Check cocktail but she gave her scouts honor that I would enjoy it and let me tell you it ended up being my favorite drink!!! (Also served in a cute little teacup helps a lot) For our entrees I couldn't decide between the Huevos Rancheros or the Crispy Potato, bacon & cheddar skillet and Brona suggested the crispy potato skillet as it would keep me fuller for longer and man was she right again!! The potato skins were a bit too crispy for my liking but it was delicious nonetheless. My bestie ended up getting the Brussel Sprouts Hash but it was very lackluster. It was basically just shredded Brussel sprouts with a fried egg on top. Delicious cuz we love Brussel sprouts but nothing more to it. We also decided to share the Pancakes as that was one of their top sellers and boy oh boy I can see why. That was the star of the show for this meal!! The pancakes were so fluffy but had this crisp edge so it was a textural delight!!! And the soft whipped butter and delicious topping was just chefs kiss! I'll keep it short and sweet. Basically Tanner Smith was a gangster back in the old days and ended up getting arrested for one of his crimes. While doing time he decided he wanted to leave his life of crime and switch his life around. When he got out of prison he opened up his own orphanage and tried to stay low. On one fateful night he was enjoying a cocktail at a speakeasy and was shot in the back by an unknown assailant which we could only assume was old gang rivals getting their revenge. Great experience here. I ordered the dry aged burger and husband got the smoked cheese burger. Both were good, his was better. Deviled eggs were amazing. The star of the night though were the drinks. Honestly, I couldn't put my finger on the vibe, but I liked it. Bartenders were dressed pretty spiffy and quick to take orders. I would say that despite the teapot being something different, I didn't really fancy the cocktail so much. Nothing really special- not strong/special effects or flavors. So I felt like I could drink it all by myself but they have the oversized ice cube that takes up 90% of the teacup. You'll really have a tea party because you have to constantly pour your pot. But, those are first world problems. Flatbread was pretty good, but I'll recommend to go early. My friend came around 6:30pm and couldn't get her fries order before our museum date. We sat at the bar on a Sunday as we popped in for Lunch. Service was just okay-we werent told we could put our names on a list when that was an option -eventually we squeezed in at the bar. I ordered a cucumber cocktail which I didn't enjoy bc the lime flavor was overwhelming. The Mezze were hummus with fried chickpeas in it , delicious, along with babaganoush and a beet dip that I liked slightly less. Love the vibe and decor of this place... evoking a 1920s Prohibition era speakeasy, with ornate designs and vintage light fixtures, interesting antiques on walls, bartenders in suspenders... The cocktails, food and service are excellent. Ordered brunch- nice menu selection and well executed. Fine touches for example, with certain drinks served in teapots and teacups, wood fired over a drink to enhance its smoky flavor, they make a special Demarara dark sugar syrup for the cocktails made with dark liquors (bourbons, ryes, whiskeys, etc), the glassware is fancy and catered to the cocktail. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Located near the Times Square Theater District, the crowd is a nice mix of locals and tourists. I was like, the cost of these drinks would've been two meals in the Bay. Now, 9ish years later, I was pleased to see how affordable this spot was! My tastes have also changed. Its no longer the best old fashioned I've ever had. That title belongs to the Cote Fashioned now. That said, this was my first espresso Boulevardier and it hit the spot like no other. Well I have mixed feelings and I would really like to give a five star rating , but just can't. First the positives. The interior is very warm, inviting and attractive. Low lights and cozy feeling. I had probably the best vegiburger I have ever had. They make it " in house" and I really enjoyed it! The vegiburger was $20 and it would have been nice to have like a little salad or fries come with it. Next the negative: we were having lunch before a 2 pm play and so we needed the food to be delivered in timely manner. Three of the meals came in reasonable time and so, since we had a play to make and figured the fourth dish would arrive soon, we began to eat. We all finished our meal and still NO fourth meal. We asked repeatedly for the meal and what was happening? Staff was very pleasant, and said repeatedly, that it will come as soon as ready. We never really got an explanation as to the delay. Keep in mind that the restaurant was relatively empty at this time, really not busy. Finally our 4 th person, said, just cancel the order and give me a roll to eat, so we can leave. They finally brought the salad, 40 minutes after ordering. The manager came over, did apologize and took it off the bill, which was reasonable. But this whole thing definitely ruined our dining experience. Waiting and having to keep asking for the meal to be delivered. So, due to the slow service, which we were never given an explanation, I don't think I would return. ( although I have to say, I really LOVED that vegiburger!). They make a really good southside here! That's the first thing i need to include in this review. There's the main floor then a downstairs bar, by where the bathrooms are. The downstairs one closes before upstairs. I didnt get to check out downstairs, just poked around while i was waiting for the bathroom. Upstairs is very loud and it was crowded around midnight. I initially sat at the bar but was absolutely yelling into the ear of the friend i went with. As people left we went to a table at the back and it was much quieter. Our waiter was Danny. He was awesomeness as well, very accommodating and attentive to our table. On another note, the only downfall of this place would be the bartender, Courtney. By far the most unprofessional and rude Bartender I have came across in New York. We were ignored, and when she seen the puzzle look on my face, she asked if we wanted anything to drink after being there for 15 minutes. That will be the downfall of this establishment. Others may not complain, but her interactions were noted. She was not just rude to me. We sat at the bar where they were doing happy hour ,$35 for 3 hours of all you can drink of various types of drinks. I opted for old reliable, an old fashioned, and i wasn't disappointed at all. We had a great time at Tanner Smiths and it might be my favorite brunch spot in NYC. To drink, I ordered a frozen cocktail called Dragons In Miami and it was strong, a little tart but in a good way. I really enjoyed it. My boyfriend got the Winona which was a smoky old fashioned. It was a cool presentation and he said it tasted good (he ordered two). The food was AMAZING. I ordered the Fried Sammie with truffle fries, my boyfriend ordered the hot chicken and waffles, and to share we ordered the Buttermilk Soufflé pancakes. Everything tasted so good! The fried Sammie was a bacon egg sandwich which was cheesy and had a tasty aioli. The truffle fries were addicting. The chicken and waffles were good, the waffle had good flavor and the chicken had the perfect heat and was moist. My favorite item though was the soufflé pancakes. They melted in your mouth and were soo delicious. The bartender who served us, Katie, was so awesome. She made delicious drinks, made great small talk and made us feel really welcomed. It's crowded for a reason. They were completely booked for brunch but we were lucky to snag some seats at a bar shelf. It wasn't at the bar itself so we had to walk over to order everything which was a little annoying, but honestly worth it. Also be prepared to wait a little. The food took about 30 mins to come out. We got the ponche navideño and the not your baby. The ponche was giving hot toddie but way better. I loved the glass mug it came in and it was the percent temp. I hate when it's scalding hot so you have to wait an eternity to even sip it. The two drinks we ordered were the complete opposite. The not your baby was bright and refreshing and equally good. The presentation was so cute. Okay let me get the noms. We split the buttermilk soufflé pancakes and the 28 day dry aged prime burger. The pancakes come in 2 or 4 stack. Don't eat with your eyes like us. Get the 2. The 4 was way too much food despite how great they were. The pancakes were fluffy but with a crispy edge but also kinda eggy like a soufflé. Covered in peach butter and syrup. The burger was cooked perfectly and the marrow butter gave it the nice meaty umami flavor and the pickles gave it the nice vinegary balance . I can't believe I haven't reviewed one of my favorite brunch hotspots in NYC! We just Loooooove Tanner Smiths! We've been coming here since before the pandemic, having lucked upon it with a quick yelp search. The Gatsby era speakeasy vibe is perfectly done. It's wonderful fun. Come when they have live music for even more ambience. I've had brunch as well as evening drinks and it's a different experience at night. Today, we came for Sunday brunch again. It never disappoints! The cocktails are finely crafted, some with a cool spin on presentation. The brunch items are served up with great care in plating and substance. WOE factor abounds and the crowd is eclectic and friendly. All the deco and architecture add to the mystique. Even the gaslight style restrooms downstairs are cool (& clean).
