I can say that the coffee, ham and cheese toast are excellent, but the pastries are not good.

Best way to start a Saturday. We try to eat lite fair but always leave full. I wish I could tell you to go for the pastries over the empanadas(turnovers) but I can't walk out without both. Small but mighty. This is the real Argentinian food in the DMV. Sure you can find the occasional steakhouse but this is the kind of delicious everyday food most Argentines can get walking down the street to the nearest bakery or shop. In the DMV any kind of Argentinian food is a rarity and the quality and selection has now made this my #1 Argentinian store here. For the uninitiated, you have to try the empanadas. A milanesa sandwich is a good lunch alternative, and for dessert get one or two of the facturas (those will be the first thing you see displayed). Even the coffee gives any commercial chain a run for its money. We walked in and stood at the counter for a while before someone came up to take our order, to our surprise the person sitting at the table near the register watching us wait the whole time was the employee. Such a hidden gem. This place is fantastic if your someone that cares about food and not appearance of a restaurant. There is not a lot of seating but if you get a chance, GO. I had a delicious coffee, pasqualina (spinach and egg pie), Ham and cheese empanada, 2 alfajores (dulce de leche cookie), and a Milanesa Napolitana sandwich (breaded steak cutlet sandwich with cheese, tomato sauce, lettuce, tomato and mayo). Please note I split all this food with someone else and we left VERY full. The Milanesa sandwich was huge and could easily feed two people. Completely unreliable and terrible customer service: THEY STOOD ME UP!! I placed an order 10 days before a party to be delivered the day of the event. After receiving an email confirming the order, I called to discuss delivery details, and the person on the phone assured me that the food was going to be at my doorstep the day of the event "with the empanadas warm and ready to serve" she said. They didn't show up! Then they gave me lame excuses: they denied having any record of my phone call and argued that they didn't know the time of the event (which is irrelevant, as they could have delivered the food at any time that day). They also said that they had tried to contact me many times, which is not true as I haven't received any emails or texts, only one phone message left at 7:24 PM the night of the party (after I had tried to contact them several times). To make matters worse, the manager was very rude on the phone and accept no responsibility. He said he was going to give me a full refund but didn't process it, nor answer my emails enquiring about it. I ended up disputing the charge with my credit card! The only way to describe Tango Pastry is "a diamond in the rough." Sharing a ground floor space next to a Days Inn, you'd never know it's there - but I'm certainly glad I found it. The Argentine-born owner, Sandra, is super friendly. She guided me through the entire menu and after much deliberation I ordered a plain milanesa sandwich, served on French bread, which is baked in-house. It reminded me of the sandwiches I used to enjoy when I lived in Buenos Aires. I ordered some empanadas to take home, which were equally amazing re-heated the following day. Even though I'm not a big sweets/dessert fan, Sandra insisted on packing up a few complementary pastries for me. Tango Pastry also makes pizza and pasta dishes, which looked delicious. Washingtonian Magazine includes this Latin/European bakery's facturas (basically glazed and slightly crispy croissants) as one of 40 must-eats for 2013. Sadly, on the day I visited (Friday night), their facturas did not rise enough and I was advised to return on Saturday or Sunday morning to get better quality ones. I will need to do that. Instead of buying facturas, I purchased their two kinds of alfajores (shortbread cookies sandwiching dulce de leche). One was rolled in coconut flakes, while the other was coated with powdered sugar. They were dry and overly sweet. I would not recommend these to anyone. Your best bets are their famed facturas *on a good day* and empanadas. Despite other Yelpers' mention of bad service, Sandra, the owner, was very helpful to me. She gladly explained what each item was. For that, I give this place 3 stars and hope subsequent visits will make me want to raise the rating. read more

Kind of odd that the place shares space with a motel. Hopefully they pass the cost savings on to the consumer... Trusted the high rated reviews and took the low rated reviews for what they all generically seem to be saying which is... the bakery runs out of popular stuff... especially on the weekends. Duh... Never seen a bakery like that before! I don't have a lot of experience with South American pastries, but they seem very European pastry like (not as sweet as US pastries). We did an assortment - got a giant box for less than $20 and everything was outstanding. As good as any european style stuff I've had in DMV area. We just recently moved down the road to the Huntington area. Naturally, I went exploring for sweet things in the area. Tango is located on the bottom floor of a Days Inn, it's not the nicest location in the world, but there is seating inside the restaurant and a few small tables outside. Having previously lived in Los Angeles, just up the street from an Argentinian bakery and the ever excellent Empanada Place, I was excited to see an Argentinian place in the area. Yay alfajores! Also, lucky for me, Tango buys their chicken and beef from a supplier that provides halal meat, and as the area has some Muslim clientele (the previous owners I believe ran a halal pizza place), they decided to continue on with serving halal. So minus the pork products I can eat most everything here! I can't speak to the other reviewers' experiences but Sandra was an absolute angel to us. Maybe it was just my enthusiasm but she explained every dish and pastry I had questions about, gave us recommendations and even threw in some complimentary sweets she thought I might like. We did go in at the very end of a business day and got things we were completely unfamiliar with. So in terms of food taste I knew my extremely picky husband wouldn't care for everything. We greatly enjoyed the ravioli and beef sauce and I liked the beef empanada. My husband like the conch shell pastry filled with dulce de leche, I liked the facturas with vanilla custard. I liked the profiterole but neither of us cared for the other petit fours. We were not a fans of the matambre either unfortunately. But so many things were delicious, I am a definite fan and I will be back very, very soon. read more

I adore their empanadas (I tend to order chicken, beef and spinach - extras can be frozen and reheated easily) both delicious and cost efficient. I also like their Easter pie (tarta pascualina) tho it is a lot like their spinach empanada. I probably have tried every pastry they have and always try the new ones. Tango Pastry is definitely a gem hidden in Alexandria. You may be put off by its location but after talking to the owner Sandra I got to understand why. The prices are BEYOND reasonable especially for the quality and care that goes into the food. Everything is made fresh daily from the pastries to the desserts. She chose this area to keep the food affordable and I'm telling you the food is AMAZING. The desserts with dulce de leche are delicious, the cake is soft and sweet but not to sweet. You'd never think there could be a fantastic bakery/cafe in the lobby of a somewhat-decrepit Days Inn, but there you go. What they save in rent they more than make up for with top-notch ingredients! I lived in Buenos Aires for some time 10 years ago. When I was there, my daily staple was a cafe con leche with 2 medialunas de azucar (sweet, moon-shaped croissants). Since I came back to the States, there was only one place I could find medialunas that tasted liked the ones in Buenos Aires: a little coffee shop in Miami, FL. Alas, since I don't live in Miami, I could only get my medialuna fix on occasional trips there . . . until now. The medialunas at Tango Pastry taste exactly like the ones I remember dipping into my cafe con leche at cafes in Buenos Aires. All their other facturas (pastries) also looked freshly baked and delicious. I will be coming back to try them. We also ordered ham and cheese empanadas. Those were not as good as I was hoped they would be after tasting the medialunas: the dough was wonderful, but the ham was in cubes that were too large and the resulting combination with the cheese was too salty. I'll have to come back and try some other varieties, perhaps those will be better. If you're looking for this place, it's located on the first floor of a Days' Inn. Not exactly the most conspicuous location, but I imagine that the cheap rent is what allows them to maintain their prices dirt cheap (6 medialunas, 2 empanadas, 2 coffees and 2 pieces of cake to go = $14 -- unbeatable!) Right now, this is more of a take-out rather than a sit-down place. They have 3-4 tables but it's not quite set up as a cafe yet. Almost, I wanted to note how friendly the service was. The two women who were serving the customers (one appeared to be the owner) were completely overwhelmed by a big influx or customers + the phone ringing off the hook after the Washingtonian article came out. However, they were incredibly friendly and helpful and apologized many times for making us wait. In addition, I saw the owner give a guy 4 dozens of empanadas for free because she made some mistake (I believe they weren't ready in time for pick up). I am one happy chica to have Tango Pastry so close to me! After discovering this place by reading the WashPost list I just had to go and see how real this place is. My father is from Argentina and I have been there a few times. I know a lot about fractures, dulce de leche, empanadas, milanesa, etc........ The empanadas were excellent! Baked, as they should be, and stuffed with filling. Spinach was fresh and cheesey....the beef was perfect, seasoned well, olives not overpowering and just enough flavor from the hard boiled egg. Both were great. For those of you who swear by Julia's or the DC Empananda truck you really don't know what empanadas are suppose to taste like........ Fractures......bought a few to try. EXCELLENTE! Didn't worry the rest will all be gone by this evening! Got medialunas (regular and sweet) and one with dulce de leche. Made me wish I had a jar of dulce de leche to spread on my medialuna!! Doesn't look like much from the outside (in an unassuming storefront in a Days Inn parking lot on Route 1), but a total diamond in the rough! The owner is a very sweet and friendly lady from Argentina who, upon hearing it was my fiancee and my first time visiting, walked us through the menu and patiently answered questions and made suggestions. She even gave us a free pastry ("fractura") to try! We ended up buying a whole box of pastries for just around $10! They were absolutely fantastic - not too sweet and perfectly flakey - and the price was amazing. We will definitely be going back to try out their lunchtime offerings :) read more

So I gave this place another try mainly because 1. I want to support local 2. I had wanted to really like this place and 3. I wanted to try the "weekend" pastries I missed out on last time. Am I glad I did. The pastries were stocked including the croissants. I ended up getting a few varieties, all were very delicious and tasted freshly made. It wasn't overtly sweet which I prefer like castella cake. I would say the main difference between theirs and European doughs is that the pastries have a slightly more eggy taste, best I can describe it. Nonetheless, no complaints other than I wish I had picked up a dozen or two for a reception I attended. I did however tell a number of folks about this wonderful bakery, and the nice owner who was behind the counter and took my order. She greeted me warmly and even offered me a sample. After living in Paraguay and traveling in Argentina, I adore medialunas, empanadas, milanesa, anything with dulce de leche... I'm so happy to have Tango Pastry close to home. I'm grateful the Washingtonian mentioned them, I had no idea it was even there. The location is hard to find unless you're really looking for it -- but I couldn't care less that its under a run-down motel, that has nothing to do with the food. There isn't much seating, but there are a few tables. Nothing fancy of course, but I think most people do take out. In fact, the woman before us in line carried out boxes and boxes of fracturas and pastry and sandwiches and empanadas. The alfajores were better than any I've had in years - instead of being the usual dry, hard to swallow pastry, they were perfect, soft and creamy. The dulce de leche fantastic. The milanesa sandwich amazing - the bread they use really makes the difference too. We tried three kinds of empanadas: chicken, corn and cheese, and ham and cheese. I didn't love the chicken because I don't like olives in my empanadas, but the corn and cheese made me feel like I was back in South America. I cannot wait to go back and try the gnocchi - I saw a woman order it and it looked fantastic. I will definitely go back for milanesa again and again and also I plan to try the cream filled pastry, though I'm pretty devoted to the dulce de leche treats. I was greeted fondly. I ordered 3 empanadas (chicken, beef, and cheese). All were decent. If I was to return, I would definitely get only the chicken empanada.. I also ordered several different pastries. Unfortunately I never tasted them. While I was waiting on the empanadas I watched a cockroach crawling around in the pastry display. Yep so the dilemma comes to play, do I say something, not, tell them I don't want my pastries, etc. With the glowing reviews, I wished I never saw that, I wanted to taste those damn pastries. What can I say - I love Argentine bakery food. I bought a whole bunch of pastries over the christmas holiday and in february too. My husband is Argentine and this is the ONLY Argentine bakery around. I love the Saltena empanadas - chicken, ham & cheese, spinach - yummy! I bought a bunch of facturas - media lunas with dulce de leche, vanilla custard, chocolate fillings. I got a chocolate cake with strawberry filling. I also a big alfajore with dulce de leche filling. The ladies are nice, speak Spanish, and I love the food. I will always come back. read more
