We came across Tancho for a spontaneous Friday date night after seeing Joey Diaz at the Paramount... and WOW, what a find! We rolled in about an hour before closing, and I won't lie, I instantly thought, "oh you fancy huh?!" I was in a white tee and boyfriend jeans, slightly underdressed.. but hey, at least I looked cute! We had high expectations, and let me tell you... Tancho did NOT disappoint. We went all in with the Grand Omakase ($59) since we were starving and curious to try everything. I also ordered edamame, which I low-key regret... it was just okay. That's when I realized: this isn't an app spot. You come here for the mains and the full sushi experience. Holy sushi. I've had good sushi before, like really good, but this was next-level excellent. The flavors, the freshness, the creativity... it was unreal. My absolute faves were the tuna sashimi, sea bream, the lobster open hand roll, and the tuna flight, especially the chutoro and the one with truffle!! That bite was unforgettable... a perfect burst of flavor that faded so gracefully it left me speechless. Truffle can go wrong fast, but here? Chef's kiss. We did add a separate roll each (rookie move) and got so full halfway through... but I powered through like a champ and savored every bite to the very end. Big love to the chef, the staff, and the whole team... you gave us a beautiful, memorable experience. I just wish we lived closer because we'd be here all the time. I hate that this place is the opposite side of town for me because it's SO GOOD! I would truly go here once a week if I could. I've only tried the open handroll omakase but I was really impressed. I couldn't seem to find a reservation system online so I walked in with no problem. The place is very stylish and trendy without overdoing it, but no need to not dress casually. Service was awesome throughout and I already knew exactly what I was going to get. The opener was a sunomono salad. When I first saw it, I thought it was a bit small. Only after I tried it did I have positive split opinions. On one hand, it was so good and delightfully tangy and not as soggy as other places so I just wanted MORE! But on the other hand, I thought the entire meal was a great size where you're happy when you leave and you don't leave too full. For a price like that, I can't complain. For all the handrolls, they were all GREAT! The seaweed might not be as crisp as some dedicated hand roll places have them, but it's so close that it doesn't really matter because it's priced way more fairly. I actually don't know how they even make money here with how well this place is priced. A dark horse for me on the menu was the spicy tuna hand roll. I normally don't enjoy a minced tuna mix but this one was actually good. The spicy mayo didn't feel too heavy and I normally always avoid using any kind of sauce on any sushi. Somehow this surprised me. I'd say the one I'd skip would be the lobster if you're ordering à la carte. It's good, but the raw choices are better. I also love that they don't overcrowd the tables. Some places focus on shoving as many customers in, but it's nice to see this place out comfort first. Overall, a GREAT place that I would go back often to if I could. read more

So much potential for Tancho. The fish quality for the price is excellent. However, they really need to figure out their service process. Servers seem to be doing every job all the time, making the quality of each sub-par. It is clear the staff to customer ratio is off. If they hired 2-3 more staff members, this place would easily be a 4.5 star experience. As of now, unfortunately it needs to be 3.5. However, the L.A. restaurants serve high quality, extremely fresh fish at a decent price. Something that Tancho doesn't do. Edamame were ice cold. Flavor was off on the fish. After so many viral videos, we decided to have at-home grand omakase experience from Tancho. This box is $54.00 and for the price totally worth it. It is such a fun concept and we loved the Akagisan Sake. The fish quality is good for the price but with that being said for us a 6-7/10. 3.5 stars -- I have a few notes about the service/menu: 1. We ordered the Grand Omakase, and the server did not ask if we had any dietary restrictions. I get that the items are already listed on the menu, but I feel like for omakase especially they should be asking us just in case. 2. The sole dessert option is listed as just "mochi." We ordered one per person and it turned out to be a basic mochi ice cream. What if we couldn't eat dairy? Seems misleading to just say mochi with no other description on the menu. 3. Since we didn't know it would be a mochi ice cream, we didn't ask what flavor it would be. Turned out we got coffee because they had run out of their usual ube. I hate coffee...and again the server did not specify the flavor when we ordered the dessert, though I think he should have. Me and my fiancee dinned in on a Wedn night, and the restaurant was already pretty full so we were sat pretty close to two other tables. The overall ambiance and vibe was pretty nice otherwise. We both ordered the grand omakase and immediately were being served. I do appreciate promptness but at one point i had 3 plates in front of me as they continued to bring out each course very quickly without giving us time to finish our current course. Even with being served that fast and prioritizing eating the hand rolls, they were still a bit soggy and the seaweed was not as crunchy as we like. The fish did not taste super fresh either, and the rice kept falling apart. There is also only bottled beer and sake, no draft or cocktail options unfortunately. Overall mid, with the main appeal being the affordable cost of an omakase. We will most likely not be returning. read more

Stopped by for a late lunch on a whim and was blown away. Shared the Grand Omakase with my hubby and enjoyed every bite. Fish was super fresh, melt in your mouth buttery, and garnished in ways to compliment elegantly rather than overpower. The pacing of each dish was comfortable, too. We left perfectly satiated and so happy to have found it. It topped a lot of our recent date night meals for what worked out to be $30/person. Didn't try any of the a la carte rolls, but there's lots of simple options - both hand rolled and cut, if you prefer not to do the set menus and stick with prices that are similar at most places for rolls. Not normally a huge sake fan, but they had wonderful explanations of taste profiles, and we would love to return and do a pairing or flight to compliment a meal. Simple, modern surroundings with lovely floor to ceiling windows. Super friendly service. Reasonable wine by the glass, too! It's a small plate experience so don't go with the expectation of quantity, rather quality. It also opens you to selections you wouldn't normally try. It's really a gem of a place considering it's location, quality, and price for this kind of culinary concept. It's in line with several of the other restaurant options in the center - downtown Austin options without the hassle of $40 parking or waiting 3 months for reservations. Delicious fish, good flavors, and very well priced. That said, I feel like there's just a couple things they need to fix to get it to 5 stars. First, it was really cold inside. Turn up the heater! Second the nori could have been more crisp. Third, improve the sushi rice. Some bites, the rice was a bit chewy/hard. Definitely took away from the fish. This place is excellent. I wanted to try something from each category so I got yellowtail nigiri, salmon open hand roll, and lobster and shrimp tempura cut roll. All the fish was fresh and good quality. The tempura was perfectly crispy. Rice well cooked and seasoned. The salmon hand roll was the star of the show- the miso sauce on it was flavorful and tasty but minimal enough to let the salmon flavor come through. The service was superb. My waiter was very timely without being overbearing, and I probably saw four other people that showed up between delivering and bussing my food so they're all helping each other. An empty plate never sat on my table for longer than 30 seconds, and the restaurant was full. They're clearly well trained and take their jobs seriously. This is a non-tipping restaurant- they add 17% of your subtotal to the bill. For the service and food I received I would have tipped more, so this is a savings for me but also guaranteed pay for the servers so it's a win-win. I can't really say enough good things about this place! I hope it sticks around. read more

This place recently opened and we were curious what Omakase is. For those who don't know, it is a price-fixed meal of dishes chosen by the chef which are presented from lightest to heaviest. This was the freshest sushi I have ever tasted, and the flavors of the dishes were light and bright. The atmosphere was contemporary and casual, food presentation was flawless and service was great. So, I can highly recommend! Just be sure to note that they include a 17% "fee" to the bill in lieu of tipping. After seeing so many videos of their take-out omakase boxes, I decided that I wanted to try dining in first to get the full experience. They currently do not take reservations and are walk-in only. I gave them a visit the Saturday after Valentine's Day and only had about a 20 minute wait which was way better than expected with the restaurant appearing quite full. The inside is modern and warm with semi-intimate vibes which contributed to my positive experience. The menu consists of several omakase options with some a la carte items on the backside. They also have a small selection of sake, beer, and wine. I decided on the Grand Omakase since it appeared to have the most value for its cost, and I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the selection of fish as well as the integration of nigiri, handrolls, and cold dishes. The staff were all super friendly and checked in on us everytime a new dish came out. Seems like they have a very seamless operation on how they run service each night. A new dish would come out just shortly after finishing the prior. So far, this is my most highly rated sushi restaurant in Austin, and I would love to come back again or even try their omakase take out boxes at home. read more

Just flew into Austin and I just wanted something light for dinner. Tancho was just across the parking lot from the AC hotel and it looked perfect. I was dining solo. I was seated immediately. The wait staff was extremely attentive. My drinks came immediately and during my meal, my emptied plates were quickly cleared off the table. I selected the signature omakase. The fish was incredibly fresh. The tuna was buttery soft and without any gristle. Sooo smooth. What made this sushi outstanding was the lightly vinegared warm rice together with the cool slices of the freshest fish. I just got back from Japan and I must say the dish quality was on par with what we had in Tokyo. I couldn't believe I was in Texas! I highly recommend tancho and their omakase. I also ordered a unagi open hand roll (my dessert). Everything was excellent. read more

We both got the omakase for lunch. All in all, if it sounds too good to be true, it's because it is! Gonna keep this fast: 1. I'm 99% sure that all their nigiri is made by placing a slice of precut fish onto a piece of rice taken out of a mold (see pics). This makes the whole nigiri super flimsy. I am pretty certain that these are not handmade and that there is not a sushi chef in the kitchen. 2. Fish is fresh but it is not very high quality. 3. Really pretty restaurant, nice ambiance. 4. Their sushi rice is really bad. Like, really bad. Extremely overseasoned, sweet and vinegary and makes it hard to taste the fish. 5. The cucumber salad is so vinegary and sour it's essentially a plate of pickles! I love pickles but I had to try to drain the dressing off the food to make it more edible. 6. Salmon hand roll has miso sauce on top that is very sweet and it honestly just wasn't good. 7. For everyone saying the prices are great-- there are amazing sushi places with great lunch specials FOR LESS. High quality fish, sushi chef, delicious meals. See Tatsumi or Yumi for examples. This place might be good for people that are accustomed to eating rolls only or people that have never had any good quality sushi which I think is why their rating is so high. We've gone here in person and had a so so experience as far as "AmBiANcE" goes. We were the only table at the moment but it was also 4pm on a Sunday. I actually don't care about ambiance or service for the most part as long as it's not offensively bad and the food is good. The restaurant is clean but I can already tell that if it's full then it will be unbearably loud. We also ordered some Omakase boxes for Christmas Eve and they are made quickly and packaged BEAUTIFULLY. The fish is very fresh and the rice is appropriate. My problem with this place is the laughably tiny portion and the lack of skill in putting together the nigiri. Everything will fall apart when you pick it up. When you see the prices you will think "wow, that's an incredible price point" given the quality of the fish but that's because the nigiri is annoyingly and comically small. When I want sushi I think of the 3 options: $10 grocery store, $20 restaurant sushi, or $200 fine dining. I now need to add a 4th option: Tancho. You cannot compare this to $20 sushi you're used to and you can't compare it to $200 Nobu; it's just its own thing. I was used to going into a restaurant and trying to eat 8 bites of roughly the same thing bc I picked the "signature Texas roll" or something like that. With Tancho you get an entirely new dish with every bite (similar to tapas style food where each dish comes out on its own plate and is its own experience - the entire meal is called omakase). Tancho is better than any sushi restaurant I've ever eaten at on either of the coasts! I was so busy eating the food that I only got 1 picture of this delicious shrimp handheld roll. A good quality sushi restaurant outside downtown Austin! I especially love the focus on quality nigiri sushi. The nigiri is much better than the handrolls or cut rolls IMO. Don't neglect the a la carte nigiri options if you don't like the Handrolls in the Omakase courses. The rice is lightly vinegared (I enjoy it), the nigiri is pre-seasoned. Decor is really classy, with beautiful windows, and the service is excellent. Feedback for the restaurant: - While I love the focus on sushi because I'm a sushi-fanatic, the lack of cooked options makes it difficult to come with friends and family because many people don't like 100% raw seafood for the whole meal. Have you considered cooked options that would fit the theme of your menu, such as nigiri with seared fish or A5 beef, Unagi bowls, and appetizers like karaage? - Nitpick: The fish and the rice in the nigiri are assembled a bit too loosely. The slice of fish easily falls off the rice, and the rice sometimes falls apart. (Not a big deal, I realize this isn't Tokyo, but it is an area of improvement if you're so focused on nigiri.)
