I got the Tancho Grand Omakase takeout box. It came with the roll, tuna sashimi, sunomono salad, and nigiri pieces. I loved the nigiri pieces, all were very fresh and tender. Good pieces of fish! I also enjoyed the topping on each of them adding a nice twist to every bite. While it's not the most unique or blow your socks off quality, it is a good nigiri mix. The roll was also nice with a nice garlic crunch element layered in with the salmon and sushi rice. I like that the sushi rice is subtly sweet and tangy! The sunomono salad was pretty nice, but the sauce it came with was wonderful, especially paired with the nigiri and sushi roll. Since the sushi roll is basic, the sauce adds a nice sweet soy flavor. They also provided ponzu sauce which was more on the salty side. Overall, I enjoyed the takeout omakase box, but I don't think it's something I'd come back for until I have tried the other sushi spots in Austin. read more

This is our second time to Tancho at the Lantana location and we brought our friends. We got the grand omasake and it was so good! I was a bit disappointed that the Sunomono Salad and Tuna Sashimi was unbalanced compared to the first time we had it. The salad was super acidic and the tuna sashimi was really heavy on the soy/salt levels. The first time we had both dishes it was refreshing and balanced. This time it seems far different dishes of the same dish. The highlight of the meal was ending it with the passion fruit pudding. That pudding was phenomenal and the best! They rotate their desserts and some of the items on their menu . I wish I could get that passion fruit in a tub . It was that good! I wasn't sure about the sprinkles but it added texture and was great. Our friends loved the meal and said they really enjoyed it. We went on a Saturday for lunch with reservations. No wait for a weekday lunch and the interior is so clean, airy and beautiful. I think the sunlight filtered through the trees through the linen curtains made for a beautiful daytime meal. I got the signature omakase for $36 and it's a perfect size lunch. My favorites were the toro open hand roll and the yellowtail. I think it is a super accessible omakase with more traditional flavors and focus on the freshness. I prefer Uchi and Soto for more interesting sushi flavors. The service could've been better. We came back to tancho for a redo, and everything was done to perfection. Depending on how hungry you are, you can choose between the light, regular, and grand omakase. Tancho was alright. The sushi was not the freshest or tastiest. It was pretty dry, but they did include several sauces which helped. I wasn't wowed by any of the pieces, but the box was pretty affordable for omakase. It included a roll, several pieces of nigiri, a salad, and sauces. It also had a paper that showed which sauces paired with which fish. I liked the concept of it, but I wish the fish was higher quality. Overall, 6.5/10. WOW! If you've ever been to SUGARFISH, you'll have to try Tancho. This is an awesome Omakase-style sushi spot just 15-20 min outside of downtown Austin. There's lots of free parking outside in the open lot, although it is shared with all the businesses in the square. Nevertheless, my friend and I quickly found spots and headed inside. We didn't have a reservation but were immediately seated. The ambiance inside is really nice - gorgeous seating and lighting with tons of big windows. My friend and I quickly settled on the Grand Omakase. To be honest, I didn't even look at what it came with. I just trusted the process! Every single dish was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Tancho had been on my list since it opened. I have always loved hand roll sushi places since frequenting DOMODOMO back when I used to live in NYC. Doing a hand roll omakase was affordable and a fun way to have a variety of different items. Tancho is very similar in that regard, though it also has a more extensive menu and other omakase. I live in South Austin but Tancho is located further west and out of the way for me in a strip mall off the busy Southwest Parkway. That mental hurdle stopped me from visiting for a long time but I finally have been twice for lunch in the past few months. After making the drive there, it really was not as far as I thought - mostly because that stretch of the freeway and road west of the Loop aren't busy, and you can drive fast. Parking is ample, and it's not too busy. The space itself is really nice. Light wood accents, comfortable seating, and tons of natural light. I came alone and sat at the bar, which faces the open kitchen. I like coming for the $31 Roll Omakase, which comes with 5 hand rolls and a salad. All the fish was very fresh and all were seasoned more on the sweet and tart side, compared to Uchi which accentuates the savory notes more with salt crystals. My favorite of the omakase was. the Salmon one. Also really good a la carte rolls that I also ordered were the Scallop and Unagi rolls. Both times, all the staff have been very friendly and diligent in their service - picking up plates quickly, refilling water, checking on me. If you feel the prices are high, you can get a great deal because Tancho is on inKind, an app which you can use to pay your bill. InKind allows you to add funds to your app wallet and get bonus cash. I believe it's 20% bonus but there's a current offer to get 45%, but you have to spend more - lowest offer was pay $297 to get $430. Otherwise what I do is buy inKind $100 e-gift cards from Costco.com, which they price at $75, and $70 if on sale. With your inKind cash, you can also use it with special offers they give you like $25 off a $50+ bill. After calculating my bill and savings, I saved about 50% - spending $35 for a $70 bill. The menu seemed..."basic," from my self-proclaimed sushi snobbery, but it is new to the Austin food scene and offered reasonable Omakase prices, so I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did because I had such a good experience! Let's start with the ambiance. My friend and I went late on a Tuesday night, around 7:30PM. There was no wait and the restaurant was about half full. The decor looked very modern and minimalist. The lighting was dim, which gave it a romantic vibe. The menu has 4 options: Omakase, Grand Omakase, Light Omakase, or Roll Omakase. Although, you can also order items a la carte. My friend and I opted for the Grand Omakase ($59) because we thought we should treat ourselves for Galentine's. And it did not disappoint! Looking at the menu, it served all your basic tunas and salmons, but the flavors did not disappoint! My favorites were the Tuna Flight and Lobster Open Hand Roll. We also ordered the Scallop Nigiri a la carte ($9), which came with 2 pcs and was very fresh. The sushi to rice ratio was perfect and of course we had to get a bottle of wine. At the end of our meal, we spent about $200 with tax and tip, so not too bad for an omakase experience. My only suggestion for an upgrade from Good to Great would be to include a rotating course in the Omakase menu. Maybe a seasonal chef special. This way the menu would be everchanging, enticing me to go back, and maybe venture beyond salmon and tuna. read more

Parking lot available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here on a Saturday night to grab the affordable omakase. There were different tiers that included normal omakase ($39), the grand omakase ($59), light omakase ($29) and roll omakase ($36). We went for the grand omakase. I liked how it was a variety of things from sashimi, to hand rolls alongside the nigiri pieces. However I think I enjoy more of the pure nigiri experience. Fish pieces were good, a bit on the smaller end. My favorite bites were on the tuna flight that included the akami, chutoro and tuna gunkan (had truffle in it!) Toncho is a new relatively upper scale sushi restaurant out in Oak Hill . The restaurant is located in a popular and new retail center right off of Southwest Parkway and has a good amount of free retail parking available to patrons. I'll start by saying that I'm really glad Toncho opened up as it serves what I believe is a "missing middle" Sushi option for Austin. As a non-coastal city, we have a surprisingly large list of options to choose from regarding high-end sushi (e.g., Sushi Bar, Sushi by Scratch, Uchi, Craft Omakase, Otoko, Tsuke Edomae, etc...) where one can easily drop $125 - 200+ on an omakase. We also have your run-of-the mill casual evening sushi spots where you can find a $12 - 18 sushi rolls where the flavor is more mayonnaise than fish. Unfortunately, it feels difficult to find something in the $45 - 70 range that can scratch some of the quality seafood itch... until now! Toncho's branding is focused on "Omakase for everyone" and I think they do a pretty good job of fulfilling that promise. At $39 for their base Omakase, this includes a starter sunomono salad and tuna sashimi (a little overdoused in Ponzu but I love ponzu so that's okay) seven solid cuts of fish, and two hand rolls. The cuts generally ranged from a 4 - 4.5 out of 5 - still a quality difference between the aforementioned omakase and high-end sushi spots, but definitely still good enough to scratch the itch. The Omakase is on the lighter side and I'd expect someone with a dinner-level appetite to order another 2 - 4 pieces (roughly $5 a piece) to leave feeling satiated. All-in, you'll be out close to $60 (pre-tax and pre-tip) which is still just under half of comparable high-end spots. I'd recommend the Scallops as a delicious add-on to the base omakase. Service was decent - but also reflective of the more accessible price point. Servers felt a little rushed and focused on speed and efficiency rather than the experience. Part of this I believe is tied to the smaller size of the restaurant and the need to turnover tables once someone is done eating. Note that a 17% auto-gratuity is added to each check. I will be back to try the Roll Omakase soon. read more

Came on a Thursday after my wedding dress fitting since I took some time off, this place is pretty far down south but in a cute plaza off near the galleria. I got there around 1 pm on a Thursday for a late lunch. The restaurant wasn't crowded and I was seated promptly at their "sushi bar", which is a long communal table on the right of the hostess stand. The decor and ambiance of the space somewhat reminds me of a modern minimalistic kitchen with cedar tables and chairs. Once I was sat the server explained the menu briefly and brought water to the table. There are 3 omakase options light, regular, and grand you can add on additional items al La carte. I ordered the regular omakase which came with a sumono salad, tuna sashimi, 2 yellowtail, 2 salmon, a tuna hand roll, 1 albacore, 1 tuna, and a salmon hand roll. I have pretty conflicting thoughts about Tancho. I do think it's a gorgeous restaurant with beautiful interior finishings. It's just as beautiful in the daytime as it is at night, and it's a perfect spot for a date. Service is also pretty good--they are really attentive. When we arrived, it was around 8:30PM on a Saturday and they were out of almost everything so we had to get the handroll omakase, which I was pretty disappointed by given I wanted to give my friend the ultimate experience. Our waiter also thought we were sharing one handroll omakase, and I wish he had clarified because two people sharing 5-6 handrolls is not nearly enough food. They brought out rolls at different times at first, but they did time the kitchen to bring them simultaneously out eventually. Fish quality is definitely pretty good, but I'd say overall that every handroll was about a 6-7/10. They were pretty underwhelming or unforgettable. I don't think they use very good nori because the texture isn't thick enough nor crispy enough. They also use rice paper for some rolls, and that doesn't add anything to the actual roll. It just felt really soggy and light. The actual handrolls either needed more sauce or acidity, and they could've been just regular sushi pieces. For handrolls, they need to be executed well or you're literally just eating a deconstructed piece of sushi. They also ran out of mochi. I feel like to run out of so many things on a Saturday night when there will always be people coming up until closing time is...pretty iffy. It'd be different if we were coming in on a weeknight, but they almost did not have any nigiri pieces left. Not to mention, they don't do a very good job of cutting the fish. My chutoro nigiri was oddly slimy, and I could see knife cuts on the fish that weren't cut all the way through. read more

My first omakase experience and it was lovely despite a few hiccups. I stopped by with a small group (5) for dinner. This restaurant has a simple yet cozy decor. Our server promptly greeted us and quickly took our orders. I went with the roll omakase, and it was insanely delicious. The reason I did not give a 5-star rating was due to one staff member, who was helping the server bring out our dishes. She kept placing them (3 different instances) in the wrong order and served to the wrong person (and consumed). Needless to say, our server apologized for the mishap and replaced the missing dishes for the respective individuals. For $39 (dinner price), there was a delightful variety and number of pieces of sushi and sashimi. The restaurant is in a fairly new business center on Southwest Parkway. The interior is modern, with high ceilings and lots of windows. The service was attentive and efficient. When one dish was completed, the empty serving platter was whisked away and replaced with a new delicious offering. We went early on a Thursday night and there was no wait. It was more crowded when we left, but still no wait. I would guess there are larger crowds on the weekends (and a wait). Tancho is welcomed addition to the Lantana plaza and is now in my shortlist of go-to places. Their menu is focused on their omakase sets which are all reasonably priced. For this visit I decided to go with the Grand Omakase which differs from the regular and light sets with the addition of a tuna flight and a yellowtail handroll. From the first bite I was impressed with the quality of the fish. Every piece was firm, tender and tasted very clean. Also you'll get 2 pieces of nigiri for certain fish like the yellowtail, salmon and albacore. Again an amazing value when most places just give you one piece. By the end of meal I was full and didn't feel the need to buy more nigiri or rolls. Lastly I really like their simple and straightforward pricing and payment system. Gratuity is an automatic 16%. If this was Chipotle I'd be upset about this but the staff here were great! They're attentive in refilling drinks and promptly removing dishes but not hovering in any way. Understandable for the given circumstances but it's my only point of reference. Inside the restaurant seemed pretty cool and was very nicely decorated, but I cannot see how big the seating area was. Standing by the host stand. It didn't seem very large, but I'm sure if you get a reservation it's fine. We brought the Omakase home and loved the packaging design.
